I just got the device yesterday and installed amazon prime video app to find out the best option available is 0.46 GB/hr and if I'm guessing correctly that's 480p. I come from xiaomi poco f1 and the best option available there was 1.82 GB/hr. From online reviews and DRM info, I can see that LG G8X has widevine L1 license certification. So does this device not support HD streaming in prime video or am I missing something?
Thanks in advance.

Is it the same on Youtube and Netflix?
This is true sadly. I believe a software update can resolve this. Netflix plays full hd and hdr videos work as they should on YouTube.
I'm seeing the same max of 0.46 GB/hr. Strange.

Vudu recently updated its app to HD and HDX playback on Tablets running Lollipop or higher..
My google plus movies will download in HD I think...I get no error when downloading movies with settings set at HD or better.. but Vudu states my tablet is not compatible and reverts to SD. even though I have lollipop 5.1.1 ..
Does this tablet truly support HD playback whether it be google or Vudu?
My google plus movie files average 1.2 to 1.5 Gig each, so I assume they are HD quality...Just curious...might be a Vudu issue

Old youtube apps also had problems with Full HD playback on TabZ. But the issue was fixes some time (probable year) ago.
Now youtube supports all resolutions on TabZ. So, i think, it is Vudu software issue.
Thanks..Good to know..
Seems Vudu is having some issues with different devices..
Seems my Google plus movies will download in HD since the lollipop update but Vudu is still only downloading in SD even with the new App update..
The Tablet Z is not supported at the moment it seems...
Oh well at least my Tablet with Google plus is supported and my purchased movies look amazing ....

Hello,
Love my Tab S3.
Amazon don´t support HD streaming with Amazon Prime Video App on this tablet. (only SD streaming)
With my old Note 2014 Tablet HD streaming was possible.
With Iphone 7 Amazon Prime App shows HD content. (in the same Network - 50 Mbits)
One Solution is to watch Prime Videos with Chrome Browser in Desktopmode.
But the video does not always run smoothly.
I have asked at Amazon Support - but have no great hopes for competent help.
Maybe someone can help?
is this the Amazon video app from the Samsung app store?

Ah, was not even aware it was available through Samsung's app store - I've been side-loading it from a link on Amazon's site

I read that Amazon PRime Video was supporting HDR and didnt see it on the PlayStore so I went to Samsung App store and it was there. Shame I cant find Kindle for Samsung to get a free book every month.
GLad to have helped!
So. The Amazon prime video from the play store won't do hdr. Only from galaxy apps will?

that is correct
How do I know when hdr kicks in it if it's even working. At bottom it just shows 1080p (for man in high castle)
Does only amazon video support her in this tablet right now (Netflix?) . Is the tab s3 hdr 10 compliant or is it its own proprietary format ? So if I load a hdr 10 video on to it will it play in hdr on Samsung's stock video player (and how do I know, for example my Samsung TV always says "an hdr video is playing and brightens the screen when I do
What actually does real HDR on Tab S3 or S8+? I have both devices, and have not seen any HDR content actually availible yet. Would be nice to see in real life, even if just a sample clip or something.
ya and how to know if its active
I have Galaxy Tab S3 as well and was wandering how can I make use of HDR feature. I have called Netflix support, the answer is simple: Android Netflix app do not support HDR streaming. Only TVs and Xbox app but not Android app. I also checked Amazon Prime help section. It says on Android devices following is support it: SD and HD. The UHD and HDR on TVs only. Even if I choose HDR title on Prime while playback it only shows 1080p, not HDR.
So there you have it, even both Netflix and Amazon Prime have HDR content, Android apps do not stream/playback HDR. Hope this will change with future updates.
Any more progress on this? I'm finding it a little frustrating that the guys over at the S8 threads are able to play local HDR videos over the native Video Player while we can't seem to be able to.
would love to know myself. kind of frustrating.

hi. do you mind explaining how it is you know the Amazon app is indeed running in HDR? is there some visual cues?
I've noticed today in the UK anyway, that the Amazon Prime Video App now offers HDR and Ultra HD for a limited number of series, seems to work really well, Netflix is expected to make UHD/HDR available on Android later in the year.
Like has been said though it needs to be installed via Galaxy Apps, not the Play Store.
Yes, i contacted amazon prime video, the only device listed adide ftom tvs apis galaxy s7, and ask her to update and include our tab s3
How can I play Amazon video in hd? I have contacted the support but they can't help me.
I was about to unlock the bootloader for my H840 but note that the LG site says the DRM will be lost, which could lead to issues with streaming video services. Based on my experience of using custom rom on my old Galaxy S4 and what I've read on these forums, I'm comfortable that Netflix and Amazon Prime will work. However, services such as Google Play Movies, Vudu, Fandango Now, CinemaNow and Flixster Video would not play video at all or would only play in SD with a custom rom.
Can anyone confirm if these streaming video services play in HD with a bootloader-unlocked LG G5? Thanks.

Well in the current market if you want the ability to stream from premium services keeping the bootloader locked is best case. Not sure on how many of those others will behave but just recently Netflix switched to Widevine level 1 drm which in current state blocks install on unlocked bootloaders/rooted devices (http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/0...rootedunlocked-devices-app-still-working-now/).
While it works on sideload currently i wouldn't count on it staying that way forever. So yea in this current market if you want premium streaming working/ in hd you got to keep system pure and unmodified.
I just got the Oreo update on my Mi Box 3 today, so I decided to try get Amazon Prime Video working again. It was a success. Prime videos pay in 1080p with sound. I don't have the Mi Box connected to my 4K TV, so I am not able to test it for 4K. Using Amazon Prime Video for Android TV version 4.7.9.
The Amazon Prime Video for Android TV in the Google Play store still does not list as compatible. But the sideloaded app installed without any issues.
Search Google for "4.7.9-googleplay-armv7a" and the APK is easily found.
If the link makes the post. I located the APK here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/8qtsaa/prime_video_android_tv_479googleplayarmv7a_apk/
FYI Amazon prime video was already working running on version 4.5.17 last month running the marshmallow rom. . version 4.5.17 had some random video freeze issue.
few days before the Oreo update I was able to run v4.7.9 with no issues. Random freeeze issue was fixed.
Good to know. I had given up on ever getting it to run on Android TV version 6.
Hi! I also have android 8.0 on my mibox. I sideloaded the prime video 4.7.9 version for android tv, installed it without any issue, but when I start playing any video I get an error message which says "the video can not be played at this time"
Should I do anything else to get it running?
Thanks!
Solved it with factory reset. 4.7.9 is working.
Only 1080p

Can i have help

You will need to update manually to at least MM 1901 or Oreo 2405. Try first on MM as there is no reverting backward once you are on Oreo.
Hi guys,
After I updated to MIUI 13 I noticed that now my phone supports Dolby Vision.
But today when I went to play Netflix, Widevine support vanished.
I've tried reinstalling Netflix and factory resetting my phone.
The app DRM Info detects Widevine L1 but Netflix insists that's Widevine L3.
I've also called Netflix support and they told me there's nothing they can do.
Does anybody know how can I fix this ?
My phone is still running stock, non rooted and locked bootloader.
Thanks for any help
Yes, you're right, but netflix hdr movies were almost unwatchable before. But the question is, if now is only L3, does this mean the streams are not really in Dolby Vision format? Or only the resolution is lower? I suppose Netflix correctly expose the type of stream they are sending to the device (and now indeed they specify Dolby Vision) unlike HBO max for example.
I guess it's still L1 because of DRM Info.
But if I stream something on Netflix it'll look like crap because of the low resolution (SD).
Netflix is playing using L3.
Using Netflix on this phone is hell. If not black crush in crappy looking HDR content, then resolution issues... Just why? Same issue on MIUI 13 stable beta.
Also Dark Mode for individual apps disappeared.
