Decided to pick up an LG G3 on Thursday... So far, I am mostly pleased. Here's a review/comparison...in random order:
The display is nice and large, but doesn't feel like a bulky 5.5" in my hand. Easier to hold than my Galaxy S5, believe it or not...I definitely don't think about it as much, probably because of the thinner bezel and body.
While it is high quality, I wouldn't say the display is most amazing screen on the planet - considering the impressive specs on paper. You'll just have to see it. On several occasions, I've noticed that text looks fuzzy/washed out on white backgrounds. But I think now that it's actually an issue with certain apps not being able to produce high enough resolution - not the display's fault.
It does very well in bright sunlight, and seems to have the most reactive light sensor compared to the Galaxy S5 or the Moto X.
Removable battery and wireless charging back (coming soon) are handy conveniences. It also has an IR blaster, which I really missed from the Galaxy S5. Believe it or not, I actually use it very regularly.
I picked up a 32gb MicroSD... The phone can handle up to a 128gb...'nuff said
Photo quality is definitely above average. Night and day compared to the Moto X - even with the most recent Moto X firmware updates. I'd say the G3 is on par with older iPhones; which has always been the one to beat. Stunning? No, but closer than most any Android phone I've owned. Better than the Galaxy S5... The laser focus feature is somewhat noticeable, though I'd say it helps the camera act more like my expectations than being a substantial bonus.
LG has made quite a few tweaks to 4.4.2. Most all are complimentary, and freshen up the interface in a better way than most. Like many though, I was very surprised to find the stock launcher a bit slow and stuttering - especially considering that the phone is quad core with 3gb of ram. I suspect they'll update things in a revision soon... Overall, the phone is snappy. And other than the stock launcher itself, everything else performs very well/fast. I really don't perceive anything negatively as "bloat".
I dearly miss the breathing Moto X notifications. LG does make up for it to some degree by offering the knock-to-power-on convenience. If you aren't familiar, you can simply double tap the screen to turn it on...no buttons to fumble for and press. So this helps to check things very quickly. The notification light on the front also compliments...
The stock keyboard is zippy and performs as well as the Google one. I like that you can change the color scheme and some of the button format, as well as the fact that it has a number bar at the top all the time.
I've been able to root the phone, which has helped to satisfy some of my hacking nature. I quickly got a bit burned out with custom roms on the Moto X - partly because things tend to glitch more than I wanted, and surprisingly because the Moto X actually has a very limited development community...even for my Developer Edition model.
I'm slightly concerned that LG has not announced any support for Android L yet.
Battery life is on par with the Moto X and Galaxy S5...probably because it's powering such a large screen.
Physical build quality is great. And I have quickly embraced LG's genius of placing all the buttons on the rear of the phone. They're very convenient, and you can even program long-press actions (with a hack) to quickly launch the camera or an app from screen off. And again, the knock-to-power-on is by far my favorite. While the Galaxy S5 uses higher quality materials, I definitely find the G3 more attractive and convenient.
I also like that the headphone jack is on the bottom of the phone.
The Moto X speaker blows away the G3. The G3 is on par with the Galaxy S5...somewhat quiet and boring. This affects music and the speakerphone negatively. Call quality on the G3 is disappointing with the earpiece as well (non-speakerphone call)...tinny and dull. Too often I find that I have a noticeably harder time hearing people than on the S5 or Moto X.
Overall, I am pleased. Tradeoffs outweigh disadvantages, and I love that I didn't have to install a ton of add-on apps to improve functionality and remove bloat. If I could unlock the bootloader, increase battery life about 3 hours, and improve the speaker/earpiece quality, it would just about be a perfect phone...
I have a moto x and am really struggling on whether or no to get the g3 or wait for the moto x+1. The g3 is only 100 now but I'm sure that price will be offered again with the iPhone coming soon.
I really like the moto x; size, features, battery life.
I guess my main concern is the size. I remember when the note 3 came out I said I'd never get a phone that big and the g3 is pretty much the same size haha

I agree the LG UI is laggy/stuttering. Some people say they don't see it..must be magic phones.
I am confused as to why you said you missed the IR blaster on the S5? Maybe it was a mis-type, but it has an IR blaster. I agree with a lot of what you said, but I find the G3 to have worse battery life than the S5, also less polish. I miss little things (lock screen text preview vs "New Message", Native flashlight, call reject, facebook calendar sync, etc) I sold mine, but I'm actively trying to work out a deal to trade my G3 for another S5.
The headset 'loudness" on the g3 is on par with the G2 IMO, which is pretty lack luster. The M8 was the best (obviously).
For me the G3 is amazing. The only time I get any lag is when I first unlock the phone. It takes a little bit of time for the on screen buttons to come up and if I try to swipe down the notifications it stutters. But after that it is like butter. I have grown tired of Samsung. I had the S4, it was a good phone, but I am over Samsung, I needed a change and this is a change in the right direction.

Best phone I have had imo, granted it is not head and shoulders. I loved my g flex for entertainment purposes, but in the end was to big for my new job.
Parents are rocking that and now I am on this, it's a beautiful phone!
Also it's smaller than the Note series. I had a n2 and n3 for a short while and this I can use one handed. The other two, no way!

This lag issue I think is very hard to gauge from user to user. What someone thinks is a perfectly fast phone could be considered a laggy phone for someone else.
I have my G3 almost completely Debloated. .I use Nova Launcher and have Animation scales at .5 and the only perceivable lag I see is sometimes going into Settings or Recents. It's definitely not anything major to me and could probably just be me nit-pickin lol
Hard to say though across the board for everyone since people have their phones set up so differently. Just my two cents my friend....

Some people just notice every little bit of everything. I am glad I am not one of those people as it would be hard to be content with anything.
It's ok guys. It started with me mentioning the lag that myself and several others experience. Then the fanboys follow me from thread to thread to remind me that they have "no lag". I'm ok with people not having the same experience , most people would just rather lie and argue about it than admit their beloved device isn't perfect.
I'm having a hard time deciding between my galaxy S5 and my LG G3. My experience is a little different from most because i'm coming from the other flagship:
S5:
-In my opinion the screen is MUCH better. colors, contrast, viewing angles and most importantly brightness. In sunlight the S5 is so much easier on the eyes than the G3
-daytime photography: overall nicer photos and more detail from shots with great lighting
-Slightly better battery life
-slightly better 4G connection
-Smoother UI
G3:
-noticeably bigger screen
-really good standby (screen off) battery life
-preferring the back buttons over side buttons as well as knock code
-night and low light photos: major improvement over S5
-video recording audio: clear vs distorted audio from S5

OP is saying that the IR blaster was used a lot when the S5 was owned. After moving on to the Moto X, the IR blaster from the S5 was really missed. BUT! YAY! G3 has an IR blaster!!! Back to being "that person" that changes the channels on the TVs at the bars again!

After much inquiry, I've become undecided about this phone. I have been looking for a 4.7-5in phone with a good and snappy camera, battery, USA bands, and micro sd support, and the z5 compact seems to fit the bill. However, I keep reading problems about this device mainly concerning its software and camera. I really like the device given all it has to offer but I'm just not inclined to dish out $500+ on a device that has a problematic camera i.e. blurred edges caused by software or hardware, no warranty (here in the USA), over-heating, sony ui, etc. I currently have an LG G4 which absolutely meets my needs but like I said, I'm looking for a smaller phone for traveling and one hand handling.
So my question for those who own the Z5c, is it really THAT bad and will the firmware update fix the purported problems of this device? I'm concerned about the blurry edges being a hardware issue and perhaps Sony is just covering their tracks by saying that an "update" will fix that problem. If you have updated your device, could you post a sample of the fixed camera or at least let us know here?

Coming from the z1 compact and z3 compact, although I loved those phones I did find the camera sub par, and the external speaker volume too low and muffled, the front and back screens were finger print magnets and easily scratched.
But I love the compact series and put my hope and money back into the z5-compact.
Had mine for 2 weeks now (Arctic white) and I love the new design, the no finger print frosted rear glass and the front screen also just doesn't seem to attract finger prints either!, improved and much louder external speakers, the camera has improved dramatically. I have none of the reported issues of blurred edges, slow camera opening etc it's all good. Oh and the fingerprint scanner is awesome!
I love this phone to death it's perfect in my eyes. It will be hard to part with this when it comes time to upgrade to the z6 compact ☺

I am one of those who would say that the lags are gone after the update. And whatever that guy said, I agree wholeheartedly. This phone is a beast. I also come from a Z3 Compact and I am loving the Z5c. Especially the camera
It was a little stuttery straight out of the box but I downloaded Sony PC companion (just googled it) and then downloaded the latest firmware 32.0.A.6.152 (it took a couple of hours, which by all reports is normal) then updated my phone.
Happy to report it is buttery smooth with no stutters or lags all super fast.
Interesting to see that the pre installed photo analyzer app (Sony) which was reportedly causing some lag, had disappeared in the latest firmware.
I hope this has helped you with your decision.

99% sure it's good. You be the judge. Just a quick picture, tried to place items on every edge/corner.

I've had the Z5C for a week now and I can't comment too much on certain details because this is my very first Android phone - I am coming straight from a Nokia 808. The phone is compact, slick-looking, seems incredibly fast to me and I am liking the Android experience as a whole, although a few things Symbian had were simpler and more elegant (changing phone profiles, searching for contacts under phone, for instance).
The one issue I have, and that is a big one and it is so big of an issue that I registered today on XDA to ask for help, is the extremely poor photo/camera quality. I cannot understand what is going on here. This is a $600 2015 brand new release phone. Something must be wrong either with the software or hardware on my phone, which sucks since I purchased it for US operation (no warranty). I do not know how to express in words how disappointed I am with the camera. Let's just say that my 2012 Nokia 808 takes photos comparable to my SLR system. I was expecting at least equivalent photo quality from a modern/newer phone.

What are your thoughts on the quick photo I posted? All standard settings in quite average light? Do you see any of the issues you are experiencing on your phone?

For the resolution posted, I dont see any issues. What I see on my photos is some sort of sharpening which causes details to be lost when zooming in. And believe me, I am not even remotely pixel-peeking, just basic cropping for creative purposes.
I'll try to post some sample photos to illustrate what I am facing here.

If you haven't already, you might want to check the main Xperia Z5 subforum about this issue, specifically this thread where they talk about the camera, and the best settings for particular lighting. It could be you have a defective camera though, and if so, I feel for ya since I also imported my device.

Same problem for me. It's a very expansive phone and you have to read pages of forums to understand how to make the most of it.
But still, the camera to me is a complete disaster. The app is cheap, very laggy, menus are terrible and the most improtant part, it takes poor photos.
Oversharpened and zooming in a tiny bit on a 23Mp pictures is just horrible.
The photo shared a few post back in the park is just awful too, sorry bro no offense, but it's not a defective camera it's just what is sold.
When you come from other brands, you are automatically disapointed.
P.S. videos are quite amazing though, especially in 60fps and the management of the edit app of videos is very good too.
I just switched to the nexus 5X, and there are no comparaison. Much much simpler, you don't need to test every little setting to take a good pic and zooming in is incredible, the best.
Yet I really loved the compact shape and overall build quality of the z5 device.
Comments non related to the camera is : the system is quite good as it is very similar to stock android but a little disappointed too by the performance.
I don't speak about lags and everything as it is quite fluid, but it just takes time to open or reload apps compared to my other devices.
I am still keeping the device to see if there will be improvement (there should be a major camera app update this month) but i don't believe in miracles, i don't think that will solve the pictures quality.
If you know how to use it (8mp at SA for darker scenarios, 23mp manual for bright daylight) it's been reviewed in a number of places as the best camera currently on the market. It's interesting to me how polarizing the camera is for people though. People either think it's the second coming, or the antichrist. I imagine that the improvements to the software promised with the Marshmallow update will go a long way to getting a lot of naysayers to give it a second look.

That is a very interesting perspective on the topic; so basically it boils down to misuse by users! And I suspect this is from someone that has never even tried the phone!
Let me propose the exact opposite, and I suspect a portion (if not majority) of people complaining about the imaging performance on these Z5 phones are actually far from amateur photographers and do understand what is achievable and should be expected in terms o quality. There is no way to slice this or put a twist on it, and I don't care about DXO ratings.

No, it's certainly been by those who've tried the phone. By the looks of it you didn't get too far into that thread I previously recommended, but Timaustin2000 and a few others in that thread really turned the tone around with their investigations on the ability of the camera, and comparison shots. They've even had an influential effect on reviewers. So for instance, it wasn't till TimAustin pointed out to the reviewers at Android Authority that they were crippling the phone by using the 23mp in low light scenarios that they took into consideration the supersampling of the 8mp default settings. From there a number of other reviewers, bloggers, vloggers, and the like took a second look at the camera in the phone and tested appropriately with often very very positive results (many of these reviews and videos are also mentioned in that thread).

From the recent reviews that I've been reading and watching, that doesn't appear to be the case, but of course, you're free to come to your own conclusions.
Haven't had much experience with the Z5C camera yet, only had it for a week.
But one thing, it takes so long to open. This is my 1St Android phone, been an ios user for around 4.5 years & the iPhones were just easier to access their camera. Slide up, click camera & it opened. On the Z5C, you press & hold the camera button, feel it vibrate, let it go... & wait.
After a second or so, the screen goes black, then the camera opens, then the screen starts to set itself up.
Just tried then & it was around 4 seconds.
I love the phone so far, but it seems to really struggle with normal usage.
By normal usage, for me, I mean it lags. Playing YouTube videos, it lags, I'm in Oz & we have an online streaming movie/TV service called Stan.... It doesn't work on the Z5.
Switching between tasks can give the phone a heart attack. For example, I was playing Clash Of Clans & some one tried to call me, the box popped down, I clicked answer & nothing happened.
I clicked answer two or three more times, before clicking back to the home screen, the phone call went to message bank while my phone locked up, went black & I had to wait around 30 seconds for it to sort itself out.
Even typing this it lags every now & then.
8 Ball Pool is laggy... If messages pop while playing, it gets even worse.
I do love the phone, I am enjoying Android (I miss a few ios advantages), but I just wish that the phone didn't feel like it was made with enough Ram to run the OS & one app at a time.
Oh... The audio is quiet, it doesn't go as loud as my iPhone 4 did, with my Bose head set & it lacks the same bass, but does sound alright.
The included Sony ear plugs are uncomfortable, have no sound advantages, have annoying different length ear cords & no volume control.
No supplied quick charger.
The back of the phone tends to get quite hot.

But one thing, it takes so long to open. This is my 1St Android phone, been an ios user for around 4.5 years & the iPhones were just easier to access their camera. Slide up, click camera & it opened. On the Z5C, you press & hold the camera button, feel it vibrate, let it go... & wait.
After a second or so, the screen goes black, then the camera opens, then the screen starts to set itself up.
Just tried then & it was around 4 seconds.
I love the phone so far, but it seems to really struggle with normal usage.
By normal usage, for me, I mean it lags. Playing YouTube videos, it lags, I'm in Oz & we have an online streaming movie/TV service called Stan.... It doesn't work on the Z5.
Switching between tasks can give the phone a heart attack. For example, I was playing Clash Of Clans & some one tried to call me, the box popped down, I clicked answer & nothing happened.
I clicked answer two or three more times, before clicking back to the home screen, the phone call went to message bank while my phone locked up, went black & I had to wait around 30 seconds for it to sort itself out.
Even typing this it lags every now & then.
8 Ball Pool is laggy... If messages pop while playing, it gets even worse.
I do love the phone, I am enjoying Android (I miss a few ios advantages), but I just wish that the phone didn't feel like it was made with enough Ram to run the OS & one app at a time.
Oh... The audio is quiet, it doesn't go as loud as my iPhone 4 did, with my Bose head set & it lacks the same bass, but does sound alright.
The included Sony ear plugs are uncomfortable, have no sound advantages, have annoying different length ear cords & no volume control.
No supplied quick charger.
The back of the phone tends to get quite hot.

Previous iPhone only user here too. Have you updated to the latest firmware? My camera takes about 2 seconds to come up pressing the side button since the update. Further improvements are expected with the Marshmallow update.
Also, I have no lag since the latest firmware, but I'm also using the Nova Launcher which you can get for free in the Play Store (not sure if that makes any difference or not).
I also have a problem with the volume, especially from the front speakers. Thought having two speakers instead of one, as I did on my iPhone 2G, 3G, 4S. and 6S would make it louder, but it's not. Still, honestly, I don't find it much quieter than those devices either. the 6S was maybe a tick louder, but not by much. I still want more punch from the front speakers, and I'm hoping that's something I can fix by doing some sort of ROM tweak. If not, I suppose I can live with it, but its the biggest disappointment about the device for me, not because its so much quieter than my iPhone devices, but because it doesn't stand head and shoulders above them.
I don't know about you, but my Sony ear plugs are way way wayyyyy more comfortable than my iPhone headphones. In fact, they're the most comfortable in-ear headphones I've ever worn. The different length on the cords I don't really have much issue with, since I usually drape the longest cord behind my head to my right ear (which is how I'm assuming they're meant to be worn). I will admit that they seem slightly cheap-ish, and I was hoping that where the volume button was (which I DO have on my pair) also had a mic so I could answer in-coming calls, but overall, I think they're pretty okay. Again, they're much more comfortable than the headphones that came with my iPhones. As far as loudness in the headphones is concerned, they're loud enough, but I definitely wouldn't mind if they were louder. I'll probably end up getting some sort of thin amp/dac like the dragonfly or the Aqua to boost the volume. Shame I have to do that, but oh well.
Again, its interesting to me how varied people's reactions are to this device. I'm FAR more happier with this device than I am my previous iPhones. Its not perfect, but it hits so many of the checkboxes for me that its hard to complain.
Edit: Oh, also, I got a quick charger with my device, but I bought the Taiwan version, so maybe that accounts for the difference in headphones and charger.
Lastly, after the initial setup, and especially after the update, my phone doesn't get very hot. Maybe I'm not using the same intensive programs that you are, though. The phone gets a little warm with Candy Crush and Asphalt 8, but my iPhone 6S also got pretty hot just using the camera (which is something my mother noticed when I handed her the phone to see some pictures).
... the price! Those phones can't possibly be twice as good as the Axon 7 to justify such a price. I for one can't wait to see what the Axon 8 will look like. My wish list:
A screen a little bit bigger.
(Having used a 6.4" Z Ultra for a long time, I find the AX7's display rather limiting. And the trend is towards bigger displays anyway, as the S8 and S8+ demonstrate.)
Illuminated hardware keys.
(For ****'s sake how hard can that be?)
A camera a little bit better.
(A flash on the front camera and a dedicated camera button - like on Sony's phones - would not be bad ideas either).

That's about it! The rest of the AX7 is pretty close to perfection.

I don't like the S8, I personally think it's pointless.

Negligible differences over the S7.

I probably wouldn't consider touching the new Samsung devices with a ten foot pole.
As for the Axon 8, I agree with you about needing illuminated hardware keys, a (much) better set of cameras with their own dedicated flashes, the same or better audio quality, and waterproofing (because why not). I would also like an updated SOC, a screen with better viewing angles, and less proprietary crap going on. It kills me that this phone is handicapped on custom ROMs because ZTE wanted to use their own stuff rather than going with standard APIs (e.g. camera software).
Oh, don't get me wrong, the S8 looks like a nice (and gorgeous) device. Samsung always seems to do hardware right. Bixby might be good, but I generally assume most people I'll replace it with Google's offerings.
For $750? Fat chance. No way is a phone worth that. Hell, a person could spend just a bit more than the price on the Plus' tag to get any number of great computer components, the greatest laptop of the year, or something else actually worth close to one grand. I don't understand how these expensive phones continue to sell.
I also couldn't willingly choose a phone without official support for an unlocked bootloader.
Here's to hoping the next best thing comes along and actually fulfills the requirements of that title.

I turned it all the way down and it's still way too powerful. And it makes a high-pitched sound like the phone is not well constructed.

You don't know what you're talking about. The camera software can be used on LineageOS, first phone I have that can do that (LG G2 and Galaxy Note 4 couldn't)
Better viewing angles? It has the same display as the Galaxy S7, an amazing AMOLED screen, which have the best viewing angles possible. And this is not even a TV anyway so it's not a crucial thing.
I've never felt like the viewing angle needs improvement. But a few times while using the phone outside in broad sunshine I found myself wishing for more brightness.

By no means am I saying the device is a bad phone or anything. In fact, this honestly is probably my favorite device ever.
Still, I would greatly appreciate DNG support, which the device would have if ZTE had used Google's camera API 2. Unfortunately --as far as I know-- raw photos are only supported through the ZTE's own camera in manual mode. That bugs me. I don't like being forced to use things I wouldn't otherwise in order to get the experience I want.
If you use Lineage you know the camera is not the sole or even the most apparent place in which ZTE's awkward implementation of software and drivers has caused trouble for development. I only chose it as my example because it affects me the most, but issues such as the one any non-stock based ROM has with audio distortion are only present because ZTE either didn't stick to standards or chose to complicate their drivers and stuff.
Customizability is Android's core selling point for me, so being unable to use whatever I want exactly as I want it detracts from a device's appeal. I should be able to use whichever camera app I want with DNG support. I should be able to listen to good quality music in a non-stock ROM. ZTE made it harder for developers to give users those options than they should have.
As for the SOC and the screen, I'm just adding stuff to a wish list for an updated phone. Again, by no means are either the screen or the chip poor. Quite the contrary, they were perfect last year. However, there's no point in the 8 having anything other than the best of this year's silicon if it is to be marketed as another flagship killer. There are people who would choose not to buy the phone just because the number 835 looks greater than 820. The Axon 8 deserves just as much consideration as every phone that comes out, and not choosing to upgrade the SOC would unfortunately place it at a disadvantage (despite the fact that the 820 is a magnificent beast in it's own right).
The viewing angle thing is literally the world's slightest grievance. I spend a lot of time reading on my phone because I haven't got a dedicated e-reader anymore. If I'm lying on my stomach with the display pointed a bit away from my face there is a very slight blue tinge. It is extremely minor and no worse than what I've seen on any phone (much better than many). Just, moving forward I'd rather see the screen further refined rather than changed to something bigger or with a higher resolution or something else unnecessarily showy just for the hell of it (as will likely have to be the case for marketing purposes).
Sure a phone isn't a TV, but they're being used increasingly for media consumption and the like (hence the push for fancier aspect ratios and all that this year). There's no reason to leave a display that will be used for media consumption with an inaccuracy due to narrow viewing angles that will widen a bit by simply using a more recently manufactured screen.
On another note, I wish the 2.5D glass were just flattened so that tempered glass screen protectors could be properly compatible. I tried to get my nephew to upgrade to an Axon 7 rather than an iPhone and the only thing that kept him back was his bad luck breaking devices and the tendency to slap on a tempered glass protector that emerged from the same. That basically completes the list of what would make this phone perfect for me, if not necessarily for other people.
None of that is to say the device is bad. With some very slight refinement, the Axon 8 should once again be a serious contender for the best phone of the year.
So for context, my first smartphone was the LG optimus g pro. And my next phone was the lg g3 followed by the OP3 2 years later. I used LG phones for 4 years before a brief oneplus 3 interlude. I now use the LG G6 as my daily driver and my op3 as my work phone/backup phone and I constantly use custom roms on there.
I decided to get the korean version of this phone largely just because I wanted the quad dac and the 64gb of storage. I am a bit of an audiophile and am willing to live without wireless charging if I got the dac. Here are some of my thoughts on the LG G6 after having used it for a few days now. I will be comparing it to the G3 and the OP3 in this post to give some perspective if any of you are familiar with those devices. I will just talk about the aspects of the device that I actually use or encounter the most. As I've realized what I care about in a phone is its utility. I don't mind a weaker processor if the phone is generally more useful or accessible for whatever reason.
Quick note about performance and the camera- benchmarks aside it runs like an SD821 phone. as you would expect very well. I am still taking test photos for the camera no opinion yet.
Ergonomics and General Use Features
-This is the first thing I want to talk about is just how this thing feels in the hand. The thing feels really comfortable it's just the right width and is somewhat usable with one hand. It does feel really premium as well. Compared to the OP3, the G6 is less wide and it feels comparably better than the OP3. Honestly I never really had complaints about how the OP3 felt in the hand but it is thinner and wider than the G6 but I actually prefer the slightly fatter and less wide profile of the g6. The OP3 can feel a bit like it's digging into your hand when you grip it.
-Related to that is the placement of the fingerprint sensor, which I have some gripes about. I much prefer fingerprint sensors on the front of phones. If I want to unlock my G6 when it is sitting on the desk, I have to lift it up or use my pin/pattern lock like a chump. Not my favorite. The fingerprint sensor is also slower than the OP3, but the G6's scanner is by no means slow. It's just not as fast.
-The other issue is the placement of the headphone jack. Why in god's name would they put that **** at the top? I mean I know that isn't as wacky as the fingerprint sensor placement on the s8 but still not great. The problem is that when I put the phone in my pocket, I have to put it camera side up in there. When I go to take the phone out of my pocket I inevitable have to be careful about not touching the camera, which is annoying. With the OP3 I would just be able to grab the thing out of my pocket really quickly. I am really trying to take good care of the camera lens because it is only gorilla glass 3 like my old G3.
The Screen and Quick Battery Notes
-I have a lot of opinions about this one. Everyone on youtube and other places gives LG so much **** for having phones with IPS LCD displays but I honestly don't know why. All those samsung fanboys go on at length about how the AMOLED is so much better despite not having seen the G6's screen in person. Compared to the OP3, which is AMOLED mind you, the G6's screen is essentially as good. I mean sure it's not as colorful as the OP3's screen, but the second I picked up the G6 it was barely noticeable. Also you have to remember with IPS LCD you get much better color accuracy, which is kind of a plus in its own way. Either way, it's really a non issue. Compared to the IPS LCD of the G3, the G6 is in a whole league of its own.
-The aspect ratio is interesting. The android ecosystem doesn't fully support it yet, but they will given samsung and LG's move to 18:9. It does make certain movies with the right aspect ratio quite enjoyable to watch on the screen. It's a very cinematic view on screen, which is nice. You guys are probably aware of the way that some of LG's apps play with the ratio a bit and they are largely successful with it.
-The always on display. GREAT. It's as good as the ambient display on the OP3 with a bit more utility. I like that it stays on and that it will flash the icon of an incoming notification. The battery drain is pretty minimal so that's nice.
-As for the screen on time and the battery life, they are good on the G6. I get 4.5 hours of screen on time with my normal use, which is more than I get on the OP3 which is usually 3.5 hours at most unless I get fancy with the custom kernels and stuff. The battery definitely lasts the whole day and the audio doesn't drain it too much.
The DAC
So the DAC. It's everything I hoped it would be and more. Honestly I get very dubious about audio enhancements and stuff like that. I had an HP laptop once that had "beats audio" on it and it was frankly terrible. With this though, when I turn the DAC on, I honestly do feel like it's contributing real quality to the sound I'm listening to. It's not just some cheap bass equalizer setting. And it speaks for itself when it successfully drives high impedance headphones without breaking a sweat. They also give you precise volume controls, which is the best feature ever. I don't know why I ever lived without it. Overall, the DAC is really great and makes the audio coming out of a pair of headphones truly incredible. Hats off to LG. They knocked the media experience out of the park. And the best part, having the DAC on doesn't even drain your battery by much, I leave it on throughout the day. The OP3 is only okay and the G3 audio is horrid compared to what you get from the G6.
Network Connectivity (WIFI and LTE)
-I have the Korean version (G600S), which is GSM only to my knowledge. I have successfully gotten LTE with my ATT and T-mobile sim cards, so it will work in the US no problem. It might say 3G at first with ATT, just let it sit, after the carrier database updates you will eventually get LTE, just be patient. With T-mobile I got LTE from the get go as soon as the sim was in. I will put a screen shot of my ATT lte screen shot below.
-The wifi connectivity is good. Better than the OP3, which has terrible wifi performance sometimes, and WAY WAY WAY better than the G3 thank god. The G3 having poor wifi connectivity was the bane of my existence for 2 years and I am so glad that is over.
Final Thoughts
LG has come a long way, and they've delivered something so good that I don't actually really care about what else is out there. The G3, while cutting edge for the time, suffered hardware issues and strange software choices that left me wanting more. The OP3 while very cool at a great price lacks the DAC and the dual cameras, which really is what sets the G6 apart.

I thought about it because it has some nice new features, but also takeaways. But one thing that reviewers haven't touched on much is how much narrower it is in comparison to the v30. And when you compare them side by side, wow, it looks like an iphone X but slightly taller. I don't care much for the taller narrower phones these days. I think I'll hang on to my beloved v30 and wait for the Pixel 3.

My wife just upgraded from a G6 to the G7 and I have the V30. The size of the G6 and G7 are almost identical but the G7 looks far better with a completely black front instead of the silver bezels of the G6. The screen on the G7 is nice and the notch is interesting (not negative nor positive in my book, just different). The clock on the left will require retraining your eyes.
As for the aspect ratio, it is very noticeable to me in that it's taller and slimmer. I personally don't like that feeling buy my wife loves it. She always though the V30 was too wide to hold comfortably. The glass feeling on the phone is the same as the V30. One nice touch on the G7 is the IMEI is etched under the glass of the phone in a non-obtrusive way (T-Mobile version anyways). The external speaker on the G7 was noticeable louder and produced a warmer sound compared to the V30. As for the fingerprint reader, it is just as fast as the V30 but moving the power button to the side is annoying and a step backwards. We both immediately noticed that to turn the phone/screen off was now harder than before as you had to reach to the side or double tap on the screen instead of pressing the fingerprint reader.
Software wise, the G7 and V30 with the Oreo update are very similar in feel with only some minor variations. The G7 has new options for the native launcher like swiping to Google and more integration with the Assistant while the V30 has better HDR and VR support. Also has V30 has Wallpaper motion to give your home screen a parallax effect but is absent on the G7. If you use a 3rd party launcher, you will not see these features therefore not miss anything.
On the camera front, the wide angle of the camera is narrower for the G7 from the V30 and it's noticeable when putting the two next to each other. I personally don't like giving up the extra FOV. The UI and features are more comprehensive on the G7 with the addition of Portrait mode and the Google Assistant built directly in. The manual mode is similar however the V30 has far more shooting modes that the G7.
I would say for anybody who already has a V30 and likes it, don't bother with the G7. If you have a G6 or older device, I would definitely look and get the feel in your hand to see if it suits you needs. She is very happy with the upgrade and has no regrets.

I just made this very difficult decision! (I'm upgrading from an older phone, ended up picking between these the G7 and the V30).
The only thing G7 offers over the V30 of significance imo is good FFC and pleasing speaker.
In balance, I found V30's unique features vs G7 more important.
Pushing me over the edge - V30's POLED display. So much better than the G7 for watching videos, etc. It's like the images are real or 3-D. A touch of hyperreality, sure but I love it.
The V7 is LED, so...more like normal. Nothing pumped up. Nothing immersive like the V30. So, yawn. Blacks are dark, but not ABSOLUTE BLACK like the V30, which makes things come alive. Same with the colors- normal, not slightly pumped up / amazing like on the V30. (I just got back from the TMobile store...a fresh experience for me).
My pro/con list consisted of:
Pros - Awesome:
V30:
- Screen - Live, amazing screen/colors etc for looking at video and photos. Love the oled. Slight hyper-reality & totally immersive! Whereas G7 =normal, not immersive, fine, but nothing special like the V30 is imo.
- Record audio from any concert - Can record 132 db concerts without distortion, even in the bass. (while recording video, or just the audio, of course. It uses the speaker as a mic.) Whereas G7 - may or may not have this. hard to tell. it has 'concert mode', but not clear if same as V30. Note: V20 had this feature, but IT DID NOT WORK, or at least not consistently. G7 implementation = unknown !
- Display size !!! - So much better, imo. The shape is .NORMAL and pleasing. whereas, the V7 has this elongated, thin-ish aspect. It actually hurts my neck to try to take in the full thing in landscape mode. Why neck, not eyes? Dunno. it's just a weird, harder to take in experience. No like. But the V30 is great. Plus, imo, Youtube videos get the edge in the V30's aspect ratio. (somemaydisagree...)
BUT:
G7 has:
- Better speaker It's actually pleasing, imo. You even hear a bit of the bass. It's nice. Supposedly you can put it on a box and it will amplify even more (some special V7 technology, fwiw). Also, V7 is louder, period, than the V30. Whereas the V30 - tinnier speaker. A bit harsh when maxing out the volume. However on 2nd listen it was ok. But nothing great. (in the store..). but: get an external speaker is one solution for the V30. Or headphones. Or, it's ok as is. But G7 is better.
- Great selfie-cam. 8 megapixel. Shots I saw online looked great. Whereas, V30 looked lower grade, imo, and not particularly pleasing. Maybe that can be cleaned up in post, or with better lighting? V30=5 megapixels.
Nice to haves:
V30:
- Zoom while shooting videos. -- Can tap on a portion of the screen, and the camera will smoothly zoom in to that portion of the screen. Awesome if you do your editing on the fly, instead of back at the computer. I.e., start wide, then zoom on your friend, or the guitarist on stage, etc. Very cool, imo. G7=doesn't have this. Seemingly, won't.
- Seamless full Zoom -- V30 can seamlessly zoom between the regular lense and the wide-angle one. From zoomed all the way in to the full wide (i.e. switches between the two lenses but you can't tell it's doing that). Handy, imo. Whereas: G7 can't. Pick a lense, zoom in and out within the confines of the lense you've chosen. On the smaller lense and want to go wider? stop shooting and switch lenses. So it goes. IMO, a nice touch if you want superior videography. So...nice to have,imo.
- Better video editing software. V30 has filters and whatnot for making videos look like various movie styles or something? Maybe more editing features than the G7, too? Am not totally sure. Probably a nice to have.
- That portrait mode on the V7 does look awfully nice... !
Maybes (items that may be true (unknown), and some that are true (which may matter a bit)):
V30:
- Screen burn in. In-store demo V30's have it. NOT noticeable on videos, etc. Just, like on the home screen, subtly and only once pointed out, from what I saw. But then yeah..it's definitely there. Not serious (for me..). Supposedly for consumers (that aren't running demos all day like in a store) , only after a year, and maybe only if you don't take protective measures (there are tutorials online on this). BUT...don't run Waze for hours and burn that logo in lol... IMO, since you have the V30...if it's getting burned in, obviously upgrade before it's too late and phone loses value. If it's fine...just look a tutorial and only trade in or up later...
- Screen brightness on videos. - V30's OLED made videos on youtube pop more, they seemed brighter as well. G7 was fine, V30 is better.
- V30 whiter whites. They looked whiter to me. Than the G7 (slightly gray). (whereas...V30's blacker blacks definitely mattered!).
- Make better videos (?) - Supposed to have better video recording than the V7. ? Better sensor? Cannot fully confirm.
- Better mics in general? - may be a rumor.
Doesn't Matter (imo, of course):
V30:
- Scenes - V30 has more, but most probably won't be used, imo.
- Battery life. G7's battery is smaller, but supposedly has a slightly more efficient OS or Skin or something. Supposedly comes out even.
G7:
- Oreo. G7 has it, V30 just got it, after a hiccup early in the month when the rollout was paused.
- Low light binning (combining pixels to take in more light when it's dark in the room). V30 now has that with the Oreo update. V7 always did.
- Screen brightness outside. 1000 nits on the G7. But the reviewer I saw on Youtube (in fact, the only reviewer who addressed this issue, IIRC), showed V30 is fine outside and G7 is brighter but it didn't matter to him.
- V7 has 16 megapixel wide angle lense vs: V30 wide lense: 13 megapixels.. Most people don't use this lense much for photography so....no biggie, imo.
- OS updates. PROBABLY doesn't matter, but who knows. G7 is the latest...perhaps it'll be supported sooner to OS P. and longer to further updates. LG has a bad track record with updates...but claim to be getting better at that. And V30 did just go Oreo.
- Hand feel. On first visit, without cases (in store), G7 was much more comfortable in hand. (it's thinner). I was really worried the V30 felt just too wide to be comfortable. really seemed the deal breaker. So, will you love the hand feel of the G7? Probably not, go. Because: I just tried an Otterbox Defender case on a friend's even larger phone. It rounded the edged of the bhack and....suddenly felt fine. The right case seems to fix this issue.

The G7 just doesn't have enough features to drop the V30. Now if they drop a G7 with stock android and bigger battery now I'm thinking.

Nova launcher has had this parrallax effect for YEARS. It's even reverse parrallax, so the effect is even stronger.
But I didn't know the V30 has it as I use Nova launcher.

Nova launcher = no knock on when on the desk face up.
I'll need to revisit that launcher; I've been on HTC's skin on my old phone up until now.

I should have explained it differently. The Motion effect uses the gyroscope of the phone to make the icons appear to float above the background image. As you tilt the phone side to side, you get a different view of the background. It's more a 3D effect than parallax.

I use Nova launcher on my v30 and always use knock on. You have to give Nova admin & access. security privilege. Works just fine.

With root it works EXACTLY like stock launcher.
