improved recent app switching - Xiaomi Poco F1 Questions & Answers

Following the MIUI 12 release, I decided to unlock, root and install Lineage 17.1 (also with TWRP and Magisk). I think that Lineage is very nice, the one exception for me being task switching which I think follows the stock Android 9/10 behaviour of horizontal rather than vertical recent apps. MIUI recent app switching was via a 2x2 vertical scrollable list.
On the road looking for improvements I found https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/module-quickswitch-universal-quickstep-t3884797 but I was unable to get anything working with Lineage 17.1. I also found https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-oneplus-launcher-4-6-4-t4140631 which I now have installed and the OnePlus launcher does appear to slightly improve horizontal task switching by including a scrollable icon below the horizontal app panels.
Does anyone know of any solid ROMs or launchers that improve on horizontal task switching?
Many thanks

[Question] Vertical App drawer?

Hi everyone
I like everything about s9 and s10 except horizontal app drawer.I would much prefer vertical and not paginated (or paginized) app drawer, so that i can just scroll through apps like in most other phones.
Can this be achieved with a custom ROM or add on? if so - which one?
Thanks for your advice!
The best way to achieve this without rooting is to install a new launcher. The most popular one is Nova Launcher . It lets you choose between horizontal and vertical scrolling and is very customizable in other ways as well. Since you would no longer be using OneUi, IMHO, you lose some functionality of the features samsung puts in the phone doing this however some would see this as a good thing.
Hello,
Thanks for suggestion. Yes I am aware about custom launchers - and i am considering this solution. I was wondering if it is possible to change One UI to vertical drawer before going down that road.
thanks

Custom Notification Bar Icons Help

It might sound silly but I actually one of those guys who pay attention to small details in making my experience using this budget phone feels like extraordinary. Some icons on the notification bar are just dull like the battery icon. The looks is just not for me especially after looking the one in iPhone 11. My main goal for now is just to change that alone, but if there's an app that offers more customization for other icons, I will gladly take them. I tried googling it and found about Xposed framework. I tried downloading the apk and installed it. It says that it needs framework or something like that. I uninstalled it and go to Magisk and try to download it from there from the Modules tab. I found it and tried to install it. It gave me an error. Tried it three times. Apparently it's not going to work on Android other than from 5.0 to 8. Now I don't know where else to look since that one was the only one looking promising.
There used to be beautiful themes for POCO when it was on MIUI 10. For example I used to use one called PixPie Dark. It gave me new battery icon, lock screen animations, new navigation bar etc.
Now that we are on MIUI 11 the old themes are not compatible. And newer ones have not been made (yet) which have all the customizations.
I absolutely hate the MIUI 11 default icons. They look outdated.
Anyway here's my desktop setup.

Nice....
Does the wallpaper change as per time?
What theme is it? And what's the battery please?
Sent from my POCO F1 using Tapatalk
No, I'm sorry the wallpaper doesn't change according to time. It's just a wallpaper I selected from the MIUI gallery.
Theme is stock Poco theme with Nova Launcher Prime (Paid) and icon pack is Thin Icon Pack (Paid).

I've rooted my phone and installed custom ROM (Pixel Exp). I don't have access to MIUI theme (not that I even want to because it will not allow you to use third party theme. I wonder if there's a third party app that will allow me to change the notification bar especially the battery icon. I tried Xposed framework but it didn't work because it is not compatible with Android 8.0 above.

Problems with notification bar on OnePlus X

Hello people.
I use a OnePlus X with the stock ROM (Android 6.0.1). I never made any ROM changes. From last week to now, out of the blue, the notification bar is not working properly (video here > gofile.io/d/KvLznW)
I'm using the Rootless Launcher (Pixel Launcher). The bar only works on the home screen, either vertically or horizontally. If I open an app, the bar doesn't work vertically. And if I use the original launcher, the bar does not open at all.
Is it more likely to be a hardware or software problem?
What I've tried (and it didn't work):
- Restart the device
- Enable the guest option in the user menu
- Reset the device to factory settings
In view of this, I even thought about changing the ROM, but I did not feel confident because of the diversity of information about certain ROMs and versions, considering that I want the most stable and "official" version possible.
I would prefer NOT to have to change ROMs. Unless it's the only solution (and don't come up with other problems). Can anyone help me?

Redmi Note 9s MIUI 12.0.2 (Android 11) update

I will advise everyone not to update to
MIUI 12.0.2, android 11 cause I wish I didn't. The Gallery app is a downgrade. Plus the Work mode icon that I don't think anyone needed. There are other things I don't like and I generally consider this update to be a downgrade .
I've just received the update notification and havent read much about this update apart from your post.
Could you expand any further on the things you've found wrong? Has it gotten any better or worse for you since you've updated?
Yesterday I updated from 12.0.6.0. So far, (to me) the most annoying thing introduced in 12.0.2.0 is navigation gestures don't work with 3rd party launchers anymore (even Poco Launcher). I found a trick to use at least the "back" gesture but you come back to default launcher if you try to use "home" (swipe up from bottom border to center). So, to use all Navigation Gestures you are obligued to use system launcher.
After updating to this version , I can't use any wifi access point. And gallery app works bad. And themes are few

Question Will there be ROMs for this device?

Just being curious ... will there be any ROMs for the Zenfone 9?
Lot's of small things really bother me and I would love to fix em by using a custom ROM. But I am not sure if I should keep the phone since my last one also had no chance of ROMs wich bothers me still.
The Zenfone 8 is supported by LineageOS, maybe the 9 will be too.
I sure hope so :/ I had zf8, now owned by my wife, and I hoped this would get similar support.
Chill out a little, its only been what? 2 months since the release. Porting a device takes time and effort and is done by volunteers. I expect there are going to be ROMs for this device, I think it is just a matter of time as IIRC Asus sends out devices to ROM maintainers for them to play around with and port out.
Chances are good as Asus shares Kernel sources and has a quite open policy. Also, software support by Asus is limited so chances are good someone jumpes in.
I agree, it takes some time before custom ROMs will come out. However I personally don't feel any special need for a custom ROM yet, the ASUS ROM is clean, fast, smooth, a bit customizable and with a good battery life
Which is true, but specially support of third party launchers is horrible on gesture navigation. When you go to your home screen, most of the time, the device thinks it needs to "stop" or "show" the launcher as an open app, which really bothers me. Never had this on any custom ROM so far.
Also, I would love to get more customizations. What we have is great and all, I really love the effort they put into it. But in some parts, I would love to see some custom juice here.
But that's just me being an UX designer, doing his thing
Well, with A13 not anymore. There is no more home gesture bug, it works smoothly on 3rd party launchers. I'm using Niagara and the experience is great finally!
Not sure what you mean on custom ROMs, as the bug was a A11 and A12 issue, not custom or OEM ROM issue. I had multiple ROMs on my previous OnePlus 7T Pro and the home gesture was the same on all ROMs on 3rd party launchers. It was due to how Android worked with the recent apps menu as it wasn't separate from the launcher, but was using the OEM launchers' recent apps, so if you had a 3rd party launcher, the original one was still running in the background, providing the recent apps menu. That is why the but was there. So no custom ROM could have fixed that.

This is awesome! My only main gripe with Zenfone 9 is that I can't make icons on home screen and app drawer bigger. Tried using Nova or Lawnchair but they were buggy. Now I can't wait for A13 beta to hit my device.

the interest of a custom ROM on a device like the zenfone 9 is obvious, it allows to increase the duration of the software support which Asus ends after only 2 years.

It requires some folks to volunteer to develop the custom ROMs, such as Lineage. It is unofficial if the person's efforts don't meet the long term requirements for Lineage and those who maintain the original.
I'm in the process of learning how to make an AOSP ROM myself, so if I succeed you'll see a thread from me about it!

How is the beta for you? Do you have any screenshots or links with the changes that have been made? Thanks.

Beta doesn't really feel like a beta, no major bugs discovered yet, nicely suitable as a daily driver. Here is the official changelog:

Upgraded system to Android 13
