HUWAWEI phone in US - Huawei Developers

Will HUAWEI phone works in the US?

Yes, but since they're not marketed towards the US, radio bands are probably missing, so you will have reduced coverage compared to devices made for the US market.

Good to know ...

thanks

If I remember correctly, I had a Huawei phone when I worked in the US and it worked just fine.

It's a a good news.

I have the Mate 20 Pro and have had no problems in the Eastern US.

Great news, the P40 that I am soon to win will not be worthless in the US

ZTE has stopped selling the Axon 7 on ebay!

http://www.ebay.com/sch/zteusainc/m...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562
They still sell it on the regular website and Best Buy and New Egg are still selling them on ebay. But this is very interesting that they have stopped selling it on ebay.
If they don't have any stock, how would they be running anything on eBay? I don't think ebay lets you run pre-orders and such. I'd bet it will come back up when stock arrive shortly.
It's no about stock actually.
They don't want non-US users to get the chance to buy the US model outside of the US. Which you were able to using eBay.
I was told by BHPhoto that they are restricted by ZTE to sell the device to non-US customers.
The US version is the better one compared to the international model.
Lucky me I have a buddy in NY area who got the newegg pre-order of the grey version and will forward it to me. I'm in Europe and have tested the A2017G. Sent it back as I'm waiting for the A2017U (US Model).
how is that the U model is better then G?

Could you please detail why G version would be worse than U. It is same hardware and only modem is different but modem behaves better in G as read comments anywhere? What do you expect from U? If you have software issues I am sure that if any is fixed in one of two it will be sorted out on other one too.

Actually only a few points that tipped it over for me in favor for the U version.
A: Better Software support from ZTE USA.
B: The U version has VoLTE which is supported in ROM/Baseband. The G version does not and never will. (Not supported in the modem firmware).
C: U version allows you to enter EDL mode (Qualcomms Emergency Download Mode). I need this as I'm a dev. The G version can only enter DFU mode.
D: All the band's that are required in my Euro country and in the US are supported. I travel to friends in the US and don't want to have to switch phones.
E: With the newegg pre-order you were given free headphones for around 200$. After customs it will be the same price as the G version in euros but with additional free high quality headphones.
F: My buddy tested the phone for "bad signal reception" and other faults/defects I mentioned to look out for. For over a week before sending the device over. Else I would have told him to send it back.
He is using an OP3 and even compared them as a daily driver. He said it's on par with the OP3. He even said the Axon7 is like "stuck on 4G" while his OP3 loses 4G occasionally and gets 3G only.
He is an experienced IT tech. I trust his judgement.
He is even thinking about selling his OP3 and to grab an Axon7 as soon as CM is done.

The G model has a lower volume cap, possibly due to EU regulations, while the U model has a much higher cap. The G model also seems to have more issues with bootloader unlocking, while the U model is pretty straight forward.

Thanks for the details. You see it from developer point of view mainly as I see.
A) I don't know. May be but as I see much less G related problem was reported than U.
B) May be but Volte is not as wide spreaded in EU as in US. as far as I know. Otherwise It looks that workaroud (if not the final solution) for signal issue of US model is turning Volte off, so you can get in same boat easily.
C) I don't know how important it is for avaradge users. Orherwise it is also software fearure if I understand it well.
D) You are lucky. Not eveeybody can say that US bands cover of his/her country exactly.
E) Just because of this fact US version is not better. It is only cheaper.
F) It is strange because mostly US users complain for signal reception. I haven't had any issue with. G. It works perfectly and expectedly in big city as well as low signal country area. As I mentioned earlier it looks that workaroud (if not the final solution) for signal issue of US model is turning Volte off.
Also I read that overwriting field APN manually can solve few cell issues. I did it due to orher reason and I don't have any issue.
So after all you didn't mentioned anything why U would be better for users except Volte. It is just your taste and chance to get it cheaper.

That's why I said it's only a few points for _me_ and not for _all_ users.
And as I have a chance to get all those pros for the same price in the end it is a no brainer.
Also I do not believe that the antenna is so much different to the G model. It is more likely that a few batches had a bad antenna build-in and when ZTE realized that, due to complains, new batches after the affected one's were sent off, were all build with a better antenna in place.
The Chinese and US Models were on the first batches. The international ones were produced later. Look into Chinese forums complaining about reception problems.
Unfortunate it is how the greedy corporate industry world works today. Sell those affected phones until enough users complain. If they complain, offer an exchange. If they don't they made profit.
Just look at the Samsung Note 7 disaster. Same **** is happening there.
Not to mention Samsungs Panel Lottery for their TV which has been going on for a decade.
I worked for Huawei Europe HQ and could write a book about how corporations do their quality check behind the doors. Just saying I'm never gone touch a Huawei phone because of what I know.
(Don't ask I signed an nondisclosure agreement.)
In the end it's on you to decide if you want to keep the phone or not. Or if you want to pay 399$ with more pros or 449euro for more cons.
Isn't the chinese A2017 model better than the rest? I mean... like, you know... 6gb RAM vs 4gb... 128gb internal vs 64... and you can use all the U unlocks/tools w/ no issue?
Seems that many of you forget that having US version in Europe you are out of warranty.
To many customers warranty is very important to them.
Also EU has 3 years warranty policy while US 2 years.
I'm having a month now both gold and gray G version and no reception /WiFi issue at all.
Compared to my S7 Edge the call reception is the same level and WiFi is better.
Also G version will have in coming weeks official root and boot loader unlocked from ZTE without loosing the warranty.
Even that US version is getting first the official software updates it's just matter of time(less than 1 month) until G version also received the software update for the specific region(Europe)

You could be right. That's how the world works. You also are not enemy of your money as well as no one else.
Regarding the price I would say that EU price contains the average 21% EU VAT. So it means that price of EU version would be between $410 or 415 in US. So it is not a big deal. Also I think that EU citizens should pay duty if they import from US but it is already off topic.

Oddly enough, amazon has also stopped selling the phone. I guess it could just be sold out though.
Hm, still "in stock" at amazon.com:
https://www.amazon.com/ZTE-Axon-unl...TF8&qid=1476347129&sr=8-3&keywords=zte+axon+7
Amazon.com has gold for $399.98, but the grey (which is what I want...) is $479.00. What gives???

Anyone using this in the USA?

Hey all,
Really interested in getting one of these to replace my Mediapad X2. Can anyone tell me how it performs on U.S.A. GSM networks like T-Mo and ATT? Are you getting consistent 4G LTE? Will this handle the upcoming 5G bands? Can the phone portion be operated with and without the speaker enabled? Much obliged!!
Steve
right now got answer by US Huawei chat guy: "might be launched in a couple of months in the USA market".
M3 owner here. Even if it's an incremental update from the M3, it's going to be an awesome unit. That said I just wanted to offer a quick word of caution.
The M3's wifi is 5ghz capable but is disabled by default with a setting you can't change unless you root the device. The reasoning was some really iffy corporate double-talk about FCC conflicts. That said, after rooting this M3 is a dream. I don't know if the M5 will have this same issue in the US, but if the FCC line has not changed you might need to root. And if you need to, strap yourself in- because Huawei root support is sparse at best.
Rooting the M3 was not difficult per se, but a good number of people (including myself) hit snags because there's conflicting data/results as to the best way to get there. Once you get to the proper image and learn how Huawei's partitions work, it's not too bad. Just be ready for a learning curve. It's a far cry from rooting OnePlus...
So if it turns out that the 5ghz comes locked in the US, either be ready to run 2.4 for a while or wait until someone develops root. Good luck!
Thanks for the info, seven. I'm concerned about the wifi issue you discuss, but I'd be more excited to get an LTE phone in the US. Don't know how much longer AT&T will provide the connectivity I need to keep my X2 working.
The thing with the M5 is how long it's taking to get these out there. The phone was released well over a month ago and I can not find a single seller either on Amazon or E Bay. I'm starting to feel as if it was all a joke.
It should work with US LTE. Towards the bottom of this page shows what bands the M5 has and what bands each network uses.

This is for the 10 inch, but it should be the same as the 8.
Thanks. Any idea where I can actually buy on of these?

Depending on the return policy, I may pick one up to check it out myself.

Yes bought mine from Amazon.de, took 3 days for delivery to the UK.
Quite often items are cheaper coming from Amazon Germany than the Amazon UK, plus the MediaPad is supplied and delivered by Amazon, not through a third party.

To be honest the 32GB isn't really a problem.
I've loaded all my apps and still have well over 15GB left.
All my photo and video live on the micro SD card.
Did some further investigating. The one currently available in Europe does but have the bands for LTE in the US. Maybe we can hope for an international version, but I doubt very much that this will ever see the light of day in the US. May be a legal issue or something. Otherwise, why wouldn't all manufactures just open up the US bands just for the heck of it. After all, the US is one of the top three consumer markets in the world.
Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's consumer business group, isn't giving up on the US yet... They really want to sell the P20 here. Hoping they bring the Mediapad M5, too.
https://www.engadget.com/2018/03/30/huawei-isnt-giving-up-on-the-us-just-yet/
This is a link to the Huawei promo info for the M5 on the US Huawei website. The only thing it doesn't have is a 'buy now' button. I'd say for sure, at this time! They are going to be available in the US soon. Really hoping to get one. asap.
https://consumer.huawei.com/us/tablets/mediapad-m5-8/
Nice that it's on the site. Wasn't there when I checked last week. Just hope the 8" gets a US release.
I saw a seller that ships to the US; but they only stock a wifi version of the tab. Hopefully, they will release an LTE version over here. Signs are looking good being that it's on the Huawei US site; but I never count my chickens until they are hatched. BTW, has anyone got answer about whether the tab has an ear speaker for calls or do you have to use a blue tooth?
For calls it is the loud speakers, or Bluetooth. No to the ear speaker.
I guess you could also go wired through the USB C adapter that is supplied not tried that yet.
It does work very well through the speakers if you don't mind being on 'loud speaker' to the world!

It happens with everything. I mean, in every day usage you won't notice it - but download a multi touch tester and you can see. I noticed it while playing a game, but in that application in the video I uploaded you can see it's just a normal app to check the multi-touch.

AT&T and Verizon (I believe) won't be selling Huawei phones
Considering Amazon is still selling Huawei devices, I'm hoping that the MediaPad M5 will be available there.
Mine arrived today.
So far, very impressed.
All my core essential phone apps are working fine that I have loaded, and I'm going to be using it as a mega phablet replacing my 4 year old Sony Xperia Ultra. So the M5 acting as a phone more than a tablet is good for me.
HD video on memory card, and YouTube is simply stunning with the audio to match. Yes Netflix is pants, hope this is sorted but not a deal breaker as I don't normally watch Netflix on a tablet.
Will be connecting my LG watch sport to the M5 for call handling.
Need to sort a suitable case now.

I'm assuming you got the 53010BDL model - if not, please tell us the model number. What LTE bands does it have enabled? Either product box, or documentation that came with it should say that. I'm trying to figure out if this model is equivalent to SHT-AL09, listed on Huawei US website as the one, having LTE+GSM radios.
---------- Post added at 12:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:32 AM ----------
For US folks, who are like me, wondering if European 8.4" LTE version with GSM radio supports US LTE bands for T-Mobile and AT&T: I don't know how accurate this information is (perhaps someone, who owns this 53010BDL version can confirm?), but this site lists the available LTE bands for this model: https://www.conrad.com/ce/en/produc...G-LTE4G-Grey-Octa-Core-Android-80-Oreo-2560-x
According to the above, only FDD-LTE band 5 (850Mhz), used by T-Mobile, is overlapping with US carriers. There are no LTE bands, supported by AT&T.
This one however, lists different bands: https://www.centralpoint.nl/tablets...d-m5-8-lte-4gb-32gb-art-53010bdl-num-8253117/ and according to this site, B5 is not supported.
Another one without any US bands https://www.quickstore.it/ReadyIceC...ean=6901443213603&langCode=it&productID=85281
We really need clarity from someone who owns it
My European model is SHT-AL09, and the documentation quick start guide states on page 8:
GSM 900
GSM 1800
WCDMA 900, 2100
LTE Bands 1, 3, 7, 8, 20, 34, 38, 40
Hope that helps!
Edit, don't think it covers any US frequency/bands?

You're absolutely right - unfortunately, it does not. T-Mobile uses FDD LTE B2,B4,B5,B12 and AT&T uses B2,B4,B5,B17
It can be frustrating, a year ago I bought a LG Watch Sport while in New York from AT&T, at the time, information available suggested it would work back home in Europe. It didn't. North American bands only.
Fortunately managed to buy an import from South Korea, the 'international version', that did, and also managed to sell on my US version at the same time.
So you do have to be careful before buying!

does the M20P support hd voice and volte in calls ?

i had HD calls and volte in my Galaxy S9+ but i dont think it works on M20P
is it supported and if it is how do i enable it?
According to PDADB, the phone CAN do this...for both CN and Global versions 128/256:
http://phonedb.net/index.php?m=devi..._128gb_lya-lx9__lya-l29__lya-l0c__huawei_laya
I believe Huawei firmware HIDES the toggle of voLTE by default...but should work automatically when your device is connected over 4G LTE. My limited understanding is - by default it's already enabled, as its dependent on your location and carrier, too.
So, if you think it requires activating, which i don't think is the case, here's what P10 users did:
https://www.solvemix.com/index.php/android-smartphones/1778-huawei-p10-volte-making-calls-solved
If for whatever reason you think it's NOT activated or not working and want to visually SEE the toggle (and enable if disabled) then the following process requires ROOT access which you current'y don't have on your phone, unless you have a chinese ROM:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUfmiDBPczw&t=6s
There, you can use an app like ES File Explorer and add a line of code in the BUILD.PROP file...It worked perfectly fine on my P10+ and my "VoLTE Calls" setting now shows and was automatically switched to ON.
Google and YouTube are your friends dude.

VoLTE is activated by default on Mate 20 Pro, at least on the French ROM.
Can anyone on Optus in Australia confirm if VoLTE works via a non-Optus purchased Mate 20 Pro?

If this response was in relation to my Optus question, thank you, but I'm not sure how that topic that refers to T-Mobile US relates Optus AU.... I have actually been following that thread and in my opinion M20Pro VoLTE won't work in US due to the carriers not supporting Mate 20 Pro full stop.
VoLTE is still not a defined standard hence carriers must enable specific devices for VoLTE and a device often must have carrier specific firmware on the phone for it to work. I assume VoLTE does work with Optus since they are offering the phone but hoping for confirmation.
To be more specific, I'm looking to purchase a Mate 20 Pro soon. I'd rather buy from JB Hi-Fi for the (hopefully) speedier firmware updates direct from Huawei but if VoLTE is confirmed working with Optus, and the only way to get VoLTE working is via purchasing the phone from Optus, then I would do that.

Hi ero,
This is just in response to some of the general questions in this thread.
What is Optus anyway?
Oh ok it's an Australian phone retailer.
Yeah that would be awesome if you could do that. Good luck man!!
Unless the Dual SIM has T-Mobile VoLTE, I'm screwed if I want the Mate 20 Pro though! lol Just sux. Part of me wants to say F it and just get it anyway, but not having access to like Band 12 sux. My area (Chicagoland) is about to get Band 71 as well from T-Mobile, and of course these phones don't have that either. FML! lol

I'm in Chicago on T-Mobile (via MintSim) and Volte is not currently working on my Mate 20 Pro. But I also have a P20 Pro (which like the Mate 20 Pro isn't sold or supported in the USA) and Volte works fine on that phone with the same sim card. I had a similar issue with the Mix 2 (Volte) and Mix 2S (no Volte) but on Xiaomi phones there is a way to force enable Volte by entering a dial code. There doesn't appear to be anything similar with Huawei, unfortunately.

Man, how many subsidiaries does T-Mobile have now?? lol They just bought Metro PCS too (now it will be called T-Mobile "Metro").
Yeah I just verified in the T-Mobile forum that the L29 Dual SIM ALSO DOESN'T have VoLTE either on T-Mobile. F'ing sux!!
Yeah I had verified last week that the P20 Pro has it on T-Mobile, but at this point I'd prefer to have the newer model, or just wait until the P30 Pro comes out next spring. Hopefully THAT has VoLTE AND Band 71 too!!!
I'm so tired of having to always check on this for unlocked phones. It just ends up limiting my options, which I really DON'T appreciate, at all.
Really? Wow. I WISH Sony and Huawei had that force enable code for VoLTE too. That would be awesome! I've noticed (and confirmed) that all 2018 locked phones from T-Mobile still have VoLTE, but it's been removed from the settings and "baked" in, so you can't turn it off. Of course you can still make a call and verify you have it as the call of course stays in 4G LTE the entire time. But yeah.........that's the story with the S9+ which my cousin has, the OnePlus 6T which I just bought from them. I was about to complain to T-Mobile lol but then I saw something on their site that explained all that.
I just really resent that I have to choose between the #1 camera phone and if I want great reception or not on my phone. It shouldn't be that way. Not fair at all. And I know it's all b/c our government thinks they and ZTE are spying on us. But I simply haven't seen enough proof to verify any of that.
No VoLTE support from Telstra in Australia either. I had it enabled on on my Pixel XL (stock unbranded firmware), which is the same sim card that is now in my Mate 20 Pro, but yeah no dice! Telstra has a list of mobiles that they currently support but it's only phones that they currently sell.
Apple iPhone 6 onwards, Apple Watch 3 onwards
Samsung Galaxy devices, S7 onwards, Note 5 onwards, A5 onwards
Google Pixel devices
LG devices G5 onwards
Telstra Signature Premium & Enhanced devices
Sony devices Xperia Z5 onwards
So I really have my doubts whether they will ever support Huawei phones. Which is really annoying because I was just starting to really love RCS messaging on my Pixel.

TMobile doesn't own MintSim. MintSim is a budget MVNO that pays for use of the TMobile network. I don't really think TMobile is blocking access to Volte for the Mate 20 Pro for political reasons either or they would have done the same thing to the P20 Pro. The fake controversy involving our president and Huawei happened before the Mate 10 came out and there's no question that it was politically motivated nonsense or Canada, the United Kingdom and all of Europe wouldn't allow Huawei phones to be sold by any carrier in the country who wants to offer them.
OnePlus and Blue are the only Chinese phone brands that have ever been caught putting spyware on phones sold in the United States. One Plus has been caught multiple times. Do you see any action being taken against either brand by the White House?
Volte compatibility with TMobile could be fixed in a software update from Huawei but since they are no longer selling their phones here I wouldn't count on it.

Oh ok. Yeah I don't know what the real story is. Maybe Huawei got the P20 Pro certified but decided not to do it for the Mate 20 Pro cuz it lost confidence in it selling well in the U.S.?
No I haven't seen any action. Only Huawei & ZTE have been named. And then I read that ZTE paid Trump $500 million as an investment in some new hotel resort he's opening up IN CHINA and then suddenly after that he decided they were no longer a threat. lol F'ing politics!!
Yeah I don't think the Mate 20 Pro will EVER get that update. lol So for now I'll happily keep my T-Mo OnePlus 6T with modded GCam app (aka same software used on the Pixel phones) and see what Huawei (and Sony) do in 2019.
This comparison vid is interesting.
To me, it seems that the Pixel 3 is better for daytime shots and tends to be seemingly more color accurate as well, while the Mate 20 Pro wins out for night shots. But Pixel 3 has a ****ty battery and I'm not big on its looks, and the Mate 20 Pro.............no VoLTE no access to Band 12 during calls, and also no Band 71. Such BS!!

Pixel phones have terrible build quality and lots of problems you mostly don't find out about unless you go to the official Google Pixel Support Site. They cost twice what they should at launch. I would steer clear of Pixel Phones or at least go to the official Google site and read owner comments. Owners are frequently shocked by the poor quality and many serious issues since they read nothing but fantastic things in places like XDA and Android Authority.
I learned this the hard way personally after having been a huge Nexus fan but the Pixel Phones feel much less premium than the Nexus phones in terms of build quality and design and list for twice as much.
The Pixel XL ran so hot Google support strongly suggested using it without a case and the phones suffered in very large numbers from permanent hardware failure dubbed the black screen of death which was comparable to the bootloop of death on the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.
XDA, Android Authority and Android Police have never written a single word about those problems.
The Pixel 2 had a problem from launch where taking pictures would crash the phone, requiring a reboot. XDA, Android Authority and Android Police didn't write about the problem until 8 months after launch--when Google officially acknowledged the issue and released a software fix.
The oleophobic screen coating on the Pixel 2XL display (which is what prevents oil smudges and difficult to clean fingerprints on smartphone displays) started to wear off after less than 6 months of use. I have never owned any phone where that ever happened and the Pixel 2XL is supposedly a $1000 premium phone.
Those are only a few examples.

Yeah I won't buy Pixel ever I think. I have a friend who bought the 3 XL and returned it b/c he said battery life was awful. GSM Arena confirmed this on at least the 3 (69 hours, ouch!).
I've heard some bad things about the Pixels, but WOW! You have really opened my eyes here jhs! Thank you for sharing this information.
I will just continue to use my new T-Mo 6T with GCam mod. I'm very happy with the phone overall! Next year I will very likely (though not def) upgrade to either the Huawei P30 Pro, or else any of the following are possible: Sony Xperia XZ4 Premium, Samsung S10+, maybe iPhone too, or else OnePlus 7. We shall see. Right now I'm siding towards the P30 Pro.
I WOULD'VE prob bought the Mate 20 Pro if it had T-Mo VoLTE (it doesn't, unlike older P20 Pro) and preferably also Band 71, which T-Mobile is about to deploy all over Chicagoland (where I live) by year's end.

when is the honor 8x coming to the usa

I've been waiting for the honor 8x to be available in the USA for months.

If you want, you can use a "workaround" (see here, where I bought mine from AliExpress: https://www.kimovil.com/en/where-to-buy-huawei-8x )
Inviato dal mio Honor 8x utilizzando Tapatalk

I live in Toronto, Canada. I got my Honor 8x yesterday. Works perfectly with Bell. I placed an order two weeks ago on ebay. A seller is in Florida.
This phone was confirmed for the USA back on September 27. It's now more than 3 months later and NOTHING. I was going to buy this phone if it was released in the USA a few months ago but by the time it gets here it will be old technology. Add in the fact that the US government hates Huawei/Honor I doubt we will ever see it. And if we do, it certainly won't see any updates.

Huawei's Honor brand has always been budget priced and so it was always "old technology" one way or another. If you want new technology, you gotta buy a Galaxy Note or similar. Having said that, I think what used to be newest technology around 2015 is basically what most people still really need to get by today.
I was certainly really interested in seeing the release of Honor 8x in the USA because that's my go-to budget brand, but if it does not arrive here, we could still have some other choices. For example, Lenovo's Moto G7. Based on speculations it should arrive some time in March.
JSN-L23
There is a version of this phone that you can purchase (I got mine on ebay, but also available on Amazon) that will work with certain U.S. carriers. At the least, is compatible with T-Mobile bands. I'm not sure about other carriers as I use Ting (which operates on T-Mobile network, and maybe AT&T but I'm not sure so don't quote me). Just make sure the model number is JSN-L23. And also double check your carriers frequency bands it uses and make sure they and the phones' are compatible. As I said, I use Ting which uses T-Mobiles network and I get full 4G LTE signal with 50+mb/s down consistently. The only downsides are, as of right now, it is only available in 4GB/64GB format and is only available in black & blue (no red which sucks cause is the best looking imo). And for some odd reason this model does NOT have dual band Wi-Fi so keep that in mind
