My Vario II justification to the misses was that we'd be able to listen to music in the car with it (our CD player is dead).
Has anyone come across an FM transmitter that you can power from the car cigar lighter and plug directly into the mini usb socket on the TyTN?

I bought a SONY MEX5000 BT stereo that uses Bluetooth streaming. It is so cool! much better quality(sound) then the radio ones. I dont carry CDs anymore just everything over BT with MP3s.

Try Nokia HS-12W. Google to see how it looks like.
It is a bluetooth Stereo Headset which you can listen to MP3 played from Tytn.
It is also a standalone FM Radio by itself without the Tytn at all.

What I meant about the bluetooth reciever is if there is one that tha pda streams music and is recieved by a device that can be plugged into the home stereo, same principle as a headset only differance is that it'll go to speakers.....hop I made it clearer this time... or maybe it's that I am not gettin it jaja
You are refering to Home Stereo Hi-Fi Amplifier/Receiver to speakers. Well it is something I was thinking about some years ago when I first read the white paper on Bluetooth v2.0 A2DP Profile.
But Hi-Fi industry in term of following latest trend is normally a little slower than the computer & mobile industry. So far, not that I know of that there is a build in Bluetooth Hi-Fi system including speakers. Maybe it is time to do a google on this topic, it would be good if there is such solution to get rid of the messy wire connections.
I do know that there is such thing as Bluetooth Donger, which is a bluetooth device with a headphone jack and you can plug the headphone jack into the Hi-Fi headphone jack and bingo you have wireless music with you wireless headphone, but bluetooth is quite subject to surrounding interfence, so you may have broken music in your ears.
The is also some not so good old technology using Infra-Red. The better ones are the wireless headphone sets using RF frequency which you can listen to music even you and your hi-fi are in different room.

check out the I-Tech S35 clip. A2DP receiver with a 5mm headset jack. You can cable this to your car with an adaptor cable. The I-Tech doesn't skip either!

I've not used it myself for this purpose. I've no doubt that it will work though. What I am interested in is the usable range. The applicaton I have in mind will require 4-5 meter range from the I-Tech device to my TyTN.

Ok, you are talking about car hi-fi system, the speaker looks good.
For Home hi-fi system, maybe there isn't bluetooth audiophile speaker yet.
For the car hi-fi system, there are some with the audio output (the Left - Right or White - Red cable build-in type audio output cable). Buy another cable adaptor (Left - Right/White - Red to stereo headphone cable) and the Bluetooth Donger, connect them up and you will have the audio on you bluetooth speaker. Hope this works!

The reason for modifying the headphones would be to retain the antenna function of the headphone lead, which would be strategically placed in the car to hopfully pick up a decent signal.

I've been thinking about doing this too. I've got a small (Lobby size) 2.5 mm jack to normal (iPod size) 3.5 jack stereo convertor from e-Bay. I use this all the time as I don't like talking 2 sets of ear phones around with me.

Presumably you can get a wire (normal jack female to normal jack male) instead of detroying your headsets!
I wasn't sure whether an alternative cable would work as an antenna for the DAB radio channels like the original head-set does.
I have two headsets, so doesn't really matter if I butcher one of them.
Can you confirm that when using a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter and alternative headphones, the DAB radio stations still work?

From what I've read, just like most other electrical goods, some are good, and some are not.

For the best result you are better off soldering rather than plug in, wherever you can.
I am going to put two phono sockets on mine, to plug into Hi Fi so that I have DAB reception on stereo.

Yeah, thats the plan, remove the ear-pieces from the headphones and solder a 3.5 mm stereo socket on the end so I can plug in the FM transmitter.

I've tried 2 types of headphones with this but the radio and tv function won't work - not enough signal.
So I guess it's back to the original plan of butchering the headphones.
Sorry didn't realise that FM trannie had a male plug on it. thought it would have a female.
Mind you, being a trannie, how can you be sure.

I've just got around to giving it a go.
I bought my FM transmitter (Power Trip FM) from HMV, and it comes with both 3.5mm and iPod connections.
I used the stereo 2.5mm male to 3.5mm female converter I bought off eBay.
Plugged it all together and hey presto, TV with the sound coming through the car speakers.
I'm in a good DAB area, so the signal is fine - even better with playing DAB radio.
No chopping or soldering required!!!
ringp3ace, are you saying that you're successfully tuning into a DAB signal using only a 3 pole 2.5mm jack? From Aleemz’s experiments with this earlier in this thread I thought the conclusion was that this wouldn't work. You must be in an area of ridiculously good DAB signal!

Okay, I have an older car (2001 Dodge Stratus)
The stereo is not stock but it is still old and does not have a USB or 3.5mm connection. I used to use my ipod for music so I bought a --static.bhphoto.com/images/images345x345/424579.jpg--- for my car. (It plugs into the cigarette lighter and connects usb to ipod connection).
If I take the connector out I can run USB to Micro USB for my Galaxy s3 and it will charge. However if I go onto google music the sound will not come through my car speakers.
Can my device do this? Do I need a new device, that goes into my cigarette lighter? Do I just need a new stereo? I thought I would be able to still use the same FM transmitter via usb but it seems to not work. Are there 3.5mm cigarette lighter FM transmitters I could use instead? Any help would be awesome. Thanks so much ahead of time.
Connect the S3 with 3.5mm jack to the lighter FM transmitter. You need that cable which has the 3.5mm on both sides.
The one I currently have doesnt have one. It only has a usb connection? But a 3.5mm connection to a lighter fm transmitter should work then.. if I were to buy one?
I guess USB can't transfer the audio? I am just unsure how the ipod works and an android phone cant work on the same connection.

Because it's not the USB connection that is transferring the audio on the iPod either. There's no connection between the cigarette lighter and your stereo.
The music is being fed into the FM transmitter from the iPod (via the connection that also charges it) and is then transmitted into your FM radio wirelessly. It's creating a mini radio station for your car (and close nearby others )
Also, its hard to see from the image, but if your FM transmitter accepts a 3.5mm plug, you can simply get a male-male 3.5mm jack and insert it and the other end to your S3. As suggested by the earlier post

It does not have a 3.5mm plug. But If i were to get a 3.5mm adapter that goes into the cigarrette lighter than it should than be able to communicate wirelessly with the FM transmitter to get the audio through my speakers?

No, there must always be a physical connection between your S3 or iPod and your FM transmitter. The transmitter then converts the signal to an FM signal and it's picked up by your car stereo and speakers.
I haven't seen any FM transmitters that allow you to dock your S3 and charge/transmit the music to the FM transmitter. Possibly, you may find one if you search some. Otherwise there seems to be many FM transmitters that allow you to plug in a 3.5mm plug so that's easy enough. However, your phone won't be charged at the same time (dunno if that is an issue?)

I have a very old car radio and my cds stopped working. I was wondering if my phone can transmit fm to the car radio? If yes, which app? Of no, can i buy some transmitter that i could first connect to my phone and then transmit to car radio?
It would be even more awesome if i could transmit internet radio from phone.

In my opinion fm tx-ing is very crappy, it would be better for you to change your old car radio in a less old car radio with an AUX in jack.
Then you will be able to connect your phone via a coaxial stereo cable 3,5mm jack from your phone to the car radio jack.
Audio quality will be for sure better that way, even if a bit more expensive (with 50 euros or less you'll find some entry level car radio with aux in jack) then buying a Chinese FM transmitter.
You're probably right...still maybe someone tried something that works good and is cheap to get.
If i can' t find anything, i'll go for a radio exchange option.

I know there is already some posts relating issues like that, but most of them are dead and without a clear answer.
I actually have a Joying JY-UQ130 (RK3188 headunit) with probably a NXP6624 radio tuner chipset. This HU is installed on a Honda Civic 9G (European model). This car have an amplified antenna which worked very well with OEM radio.
Since I installed my HU, radio signal / reception is not really good. Everything is correctly plugged : blue wire is connected with ANT-CONT (12V) and radio connector is on HU.
Without connecting blue wire, radio signal / reception is clearly worst, so I think everything is OK !
So, I tried like my others to add this ANT-208 amplifier :

Search other threads in general section and elsewhere. There are several discussions on this topic. No single solution as caused may be related to.particular unit or car situation.
I solved issue by putting additional antenna and joing with existing in car by using Y adapter. That way I got more signal to noise ratio. Just adding amplifiers is not changing SNR.

I tried famous ANT-208, but signal is now worst. I have removed it today, and will see if something is wrong in the ANT-208's box.
Adding another antenna ? Why not Do you know an internal antenna model that works great ? I don't want to have wires and antenna on board, so if I can hide this it would be great.

Has your car got an OEM antenna booster ? If so you probably just need a power injector.
