The camera (software) of the Mi A2 is once again a disappointment, Xiaomi still isn't even close to the competition.
Here's a medium/low light composition (100% crop) taken with my old Redmi Note 3 Pro (Samsung Sensor) and the Mi A2.
I've taken more samples with the A2, hoping for better sharpness and contrast and selected the best ones - but only that single image on the Redmi Note 3 Pro.
The Redmi Note 3 (as well as the Note 4X and Mi A1 with Google HDR+ Camera) easily outperform the Mi A2 in a few hundred shots I've taken so far in all situations, except for:
- Daylight action shots (still close but in most situations the shorter aperture helps)
- Extremely low light (the Redmi Note 3 still has the edge on sharpness and focus accuracy, but the A2 wins with a bit less noise and better contrast / dynamic range)

That sounds like my experience as well. I'm currently comparing this phone (for my dad) against my Nexus 5X, and straight out of the box images even with HDR just can't be compared.
However, I specifically bought this device for the price point + androidOne combo. With the google camera port and camera2api enabled, this is just about on-par with the Nexus 5X. I'd almost consider getting this for myself!
I noticed in your Redmi sample, you had used a google cam port. Try a google cam port on the A2, it's quite the improvement. I'll have opportunity to post some samples in the next few days, since I just got the A2 yesterday

Particular characteristics noticed:
- autofocus isn't always on-point if you just shoot from the hip (aka double-tap power, then immediately single tap volume button); for best results you should wait like a second to lock focus
- some google camera ports allow you to tweak highlight and shadow saturation; explore around!
- colours aren't 100% accurate, but could just be a simple white-balance adjustment in snapseed, etc.

Maby you are on "low quality" mode.
Go to the camera settings and select the "high quality" option.
Both cameras have its own settings, so if you want to change the resolution of the frontal camera, you are gonna have to swipe to that camera and then acces to the settings.

No, it was on high quality. Changing it to 4:3 fixed it and made the photos produced to 12mp instead of 8mp.

Why is the potrait mode resolution on my mi a2 is 16mp and 20mp....i thought the camera resolution is 12mp on the primary camera
Why there is so much difference between mia1 portrait and mia2 portrait ? i like mi a1 blur co'z they look close to natural like dslr blur and a2 blur seems to artificial why?

Honest review: I agree with @Benjamin_L
My previous phone was Redmi 3S. With Google Camera it produced more sharper images than Mi A2 with Google Camera. It looks like there's some kind of pixel binning thing happening even with the primary sensor. Edges are not crisp/sharp. Dynamic range is good though with GCam ports in every phone it no longer matters.
Only place where it wins from other phones is its low light performance due to the aperture. Otherwise the camera is not really that great, as speculated in every blog. Sure, in stock camera comparisons with other phones, Mi A2 is the better one. However once we move to GCam, other phones are at par with Mi A2, in fact better, in Daylight.

i take photos from the night sky since serveral years (with smartphones too).
Unfortunately with the Samsung S9plus the stars are not pinpoint like as they are on the Samsung S7. They apear very distorted with a kind of a halo.
Ofcourse the smartphone was not moved during 10 seconds of exposure time.
I did layed it down and used the self timer mode to prevent shaking.
I tried it serveral days in comparison with the Samung S7.
The S7 is always much better and show pinpoint like stars.
The distortion of the stars is visible in the RAW files(DNG) too so no jpeg problem forced by the compression.
Could you reproduce the same problems?

The dual camera variants of Samsung phones tend to overexpose shots, especially during darker environment.
That's what I noticed, and I'm waiting for the update they sent to Note 9s.

Are you using the telephoto camera? It has OIS driven by digital gyroscopes. Those gyroscopes aren't effective at low frequencies so the OIS will slowly drift around a small amount. 1/5 second is usually the limit for sharp photos. Even when the gyroscopes are turned off, OIS lenses are VERY sensitive to motion because of the lens being on a soft suspension. Walking next to the tripod could wobble the lens.
You also can't expect clear images if you use F/1.5.
Try using the wide angle lens.

The camera was layed down on the ground so no shaking or vibration ppossible during the exposure time.
I found no setting that the OIS gyroscope is working in photo mode. OIS is probably only working in video modes.
Even if it works in photo mode, the camera was layed down, so no shaking could happen.
Who of you could make a photo from the stars with the following settings?
Pro Mode
Camera mounted or layed on the ground with direction to the night sky.
Self timer to prevent shaking
Iso 800
10sec shutter speed
F 1.4

Antwort unfortunately the tele lens only works in very good light conditions.
Even in a bright lighted room there is no way to activate the real Tele lens. The camera automatic switch to digital Zoom.
Also in pro mode its not possible to use the telephoto lens if the light condirions are not perfect.
This is very bad because if the cameras is standing still completely and the object doesn't move why not using the Tele camera lens in pro mode?

Timelapse was taken in pitch black conditions, so the quality is not that perfect.
Pro mode with 30 seconds exposure for each frame, 2 seconds interval. Took about 230 photos.
Hello. Can someone reveal the secrets of getting usable photos when shooting in harsh (bright sunny day on the beach) light conditions? I found that Xperia 1 III is handling it pretty bad regardless of my Manual settings in PhotoPro mode. Cameras are just going crazy in these conditions and photos come out underexposed, with weird colours or oversaturated. Other much cheaper phones are doing better job than Xperia in the same conditions.
The automatic mode might be better. Sony's 'pro' modes are silly toys for marketing.
The real pro solution is a reflector, a high power flash, wait for a cloud to soften the light, or only shoot at dusk or dawn.
Other phones with better camera apps will sometimes produce strange artifacts applying HDR on people. It even outs illumination by the white sun, the cyan sky, and all nearby objects reflecting light onto the person. The camera app can only guess how to fix that collage of colors.
With only a cellphone, close-ups with the onboard flash or a soft folding reflector are your best bet.

That silly toy pro mode made PRO photographers completely impressed. They said this is the phone that everyone should buy who's into photographing because it's a perfect replacement for your camera, if you don't have it with you, that fits in your pocket. Someone went out with just the Xperia 1 III to see if he can get those shots he used to get with his professional apparatus. And he could! You can shoot incredible photos if you know how to use it. I had no problems so far, I'm not a pro, never was into photographing, but I can make really good shots without any difficulties.

At best, you can digital-zoom in to adjust for the center of the image then zoom back out. Whatever you're trying to photograph is gone before you're done mashing your fingers against its clunky interface. The only worse app is Cinema Pro.
I own an a7R 3. There's absolutely no condition where the Xperia 1 III would be comparable.
Are you sure that you have the HDR on? In the manual mode you can select D-R OFF, DRO AUTO and HDR AUTO

I think Xperia 1 III can't beat even the very first RX100. It's unfair comparison anyway. Smartphone is not a dedicated camera.
Hello everyone!
I just bought S22 plus on Snapdragon.
I have a very strange problem with the camera. When I try to take a picture in the dark with a normal mode, after sliding down the exposure bar, picture gets a lots of noise and grain.
When I shoot the same shot in a PRO mode and lowering the exposure the same way, the picture remains clean.
I will attach 3 pictures: 2 pictures are taken with the normal mode, they have grain. 1 repeating picture but taken with PRO mode, that has no grain.
What could be a problem?
