Hi,
I'm new to the forums and I'm trying to figure something out about freeing up memory for my low memory smartphone .
Things I'm familiar with are:
app 2 SD, using titanium backup to move apps to sd, using root explorer to delete stock apps, clear dalvik cache. I also noticed that each time u place an app to the SD, there is still a part that is placed on the internal memory.
I like having lots of apps so I'm looking for all possible ways to free up memory. Right now I have about 24MB free space. At 18-19MB it starts giving the low memory warning.
Since the custom rom I'm using, uses quite some space and because I ran out of options to get more space I tried something new:
removing files from the system folder
I used root explorer to delete:
ringtones I'm not using, startup & shutdown sound, T9 languages I'm never gonna use, log files (crash dump)
Root explorer shows I got 41 MB free memory (so I deleted about 17 MB of system files I'm not using anyway)
But when I looked at how much free internal space inside the settings menu, I noticed the value didn't change (24MB)! .
So if I install about 5 MB of apps it's gonna give me the low memory warning again.
I tried rebooting: doesnt change a thing.
I tried clearing dalvik cache: it seemed to work for a moment. The menu showed I have 36 MB of free space. But then as soon as I changed a file it popped back to 24MB
It's like the phone doesnt know there is free space he can use
Does anyone got a solution for this weird problem?
ps: my specs

Check where most of the space is used at, try clearing cache+dalvik in recovery and see if it improves. What is your phone's max Storage amount[avail for apps]

I got DiskUsage and it pretty much tells me the same as root explorer.
When I go into /system it shows I got 41,6 MB free space (& 10,6 MB System data),
but strangely enough when I go into /data it shows I got 23,9 MB free space & (38,7 MB system data).
I wrote down what Diskusage shows with the most important subfolders:
App storage (3 dirs):
Data (192,4MiB)

> 23.9 MiB Free space

I'll try clearing dalvick once more but this time I'll clear cache too to see if that works, as you said.
by the way, Ace42 , thanks for the quick reply.
But I tried what you said and it didn't change much. I'm thinking there's a cap/maximum for the amount of storage that can be used for apps.
Or maybe there is a mimimum amount of space that is reserved for system files or system resources.
I don't know..

Most of the phone's ROM space is for /system , from what I see the /data partition is pretty much 200MB. Dalvik/cache gets recreated, and there's a folder for all installed apps[sytem/user] in the dalvik folder[data/dalvik-cache] . You have to lower the amount of apps you use, delete system apps that aren't needed and remove their folder from /data/data & data/dalvik-cache. Or use a ROM that's much smaller, and you'll see more space. The installed apps are using a minor amount of space, so that's not an issue really.
oh forgot to mention that
/system dir = 209 Mib.
I edited it in the post.
How come it's larger than /data or app storage (192,4MiB) :s ?
Can I move the free space to the other folder (or is the correct term partition here)?

Because it contains important system files, and they require a lot of space.
It needs to have the most space compared to anything, and /cache is is normally big too since it also can be used to hold OTA's, when given out.

So is there no way to release the +15MiB I deleted from the system directory? And give it to /data?
Thanks for the info by the way
I got a message saying I was getting low on space. I bought a program call SD Maid which tells me I've used 1.4 GB out of 1.97 GB. It has an option called "CORPSE FINDER" which comes up with some files like:
com.motorola.batterymonitor
com.motorola.blur.contacts.deferred
com.motorola.android.wmdrm.webpush
com.motorola.android.simmanager
com.mot.readout
com.motorola.dock.provider
these files are located in /data/data/
and /data/data/.com.mot.readout/lib
and /data/data/com.motorola.dock.DesktopDock/shared_prefs/com.motorola.dock
Is is OK to delete these files?
Are there other obvious files I can delete off the phone?
Another app called FREE SPACE tells me I have used 93% of system space or 298MB out of 319MB available. Is there a way to increase the available space?
Thanks for any suggestions
What? Move apps to internal memory if you need space.
How can you fill up 10GB?
Agreed, move apps to internal storage. And you can use DiskUsage to see exactly what is taking up how much space and delete it.
no effect
Moving apps to external SD or uninstalling apps has NO EFFECT on the SYSTEM space, according to FreeSpace (ROOT). After uninstalling apps the space used by the SYSTEM remains unchanged at 93%:
size: 319.5 MB
used: 298.5 MB
free: 20.9 MB
Uninstalling apps or widgets decreases the space used by DATA which currently is:
size: 2015.8 MB
used: 1371.8 MB
free: 643.9 MB
So the issue is how to decrease space used by the (android) SYSTEM.
thanks
nothing user created is being stored on the /system partition. that partition is only for the ROM itself, all your customizations go to /data partition (except if you modify your /system partition with root access and adb/terminal/root explorer) you shouldnt be bothered about the free space in the /system partition. the /system partition is supposed to stay as it is throughout your usage - except if you flash another rom or mod this one. thats it
free space
Thanks for your info. I am rooted, and installed root explorer, but thats it. I have recently gotten the laptop dock. The only reason this came up was because of a message about low space in my drop down menu. I have a lot of apps installed but have ample space in all partitions except the system partition. I didn't write the message down, but if it comes up again I will in order to get an idea of where its coming from.
WAIT. THAT's IT.....the laptop dock. That message must have come from using the dock !!
I will confirm next time it happens......
thanks guys.
The message is about the Ram consumption, which the webdock consumes rather fast with several programs open (firefox with many tabs, open office and so on)
My phone is NOT rooted.
Few days ago, it started saying not enough storage space, uninstall some programs, 200 mb left free.
First of all, i moved what can be moved from phone to SD, and actually i was already doing that since i bought the phone (2 months ago), and still it didn't help.
So i uninstalled programs which can't be moved from phone, cleared all cache and some data, and had 240 mb free.
Now it's back again to 188 mb free! And i calculated the sum of the downloaded programs and they don't get past 100 mb! I don't understand? Why a 2 GB memory get used up like that?
Further more, one of the programs i had was 7 mb, and when i uninstalled it, it freed only 1 mb!
Do these programs gather some data in a way that can't be deleted?
first of all, moving apps 2 sd does not really make sense. then, your 2gb data partition, that is meant for apps stays empty, while you waste space on your sdcard, which could be used for files of all sorts, like music, pictures and video.
since obviously, in your case, something went wrong, you should format the /data/ partition. without root privileges, it is not that easy to do though. apparently, you are not very attached to your apps' data, since you said you deleted most of that. if you have backed up everything else, like contacts, calendar and so on to your google account, make a backup of your sms and then the sdcard to your pc through usb and perform a full factory reset, then when you set up your phone, your apps will be downloaded again and should not waste as much space anymore.
My USB storage is 12 GB, and SD card is 32: i am not worried about that. Actually i prefer nothing to be on the 2 GB of system storage, even apps! I just don't understand: what eats up the root partition like that? I don't want it to happen again. I will do what you said, but i need to prevent this from happening again. You know what could have done this?

Perusing your past posts, it appears you have an I9100G.
This may be of some interest to you. You will need root in order to even see if this is your problem, though; not to mention in order to implement the workaround presented in that thread.
why in the world would you want the 2gb data partition to be empty. it is on the same physical internal sdcard as the 12gb partition?

No no! I am not partitioning anything! The phone's settings are this way!? The internal memory is: 2 GB system memory: which has the system files, which are full and i can't access these 2 GB because they are system storage and i am not rooted, and 14 GB called "USB" Storage. I didn't do this partition. And i want to keep these 2 GB free for system only, not even apps or anything.
Edit: sorry i thought the thread was irrelevant, but it is relevant. But i don't understand: that dump file, what does it do? I am not following what thy are saying? Also i have another problem: I don't know how to back up my phone while Kies and my PC both utterly refuse to recognize my phone. I gave up on them. It's useless.

The issues are related. The dump file being generated is saved to the /data partition, which is part of the 2gb system storage. This is what is eating up your space in the 2gb. The 2gb is for system apps, installed apps, etc. The dump file is more or less an error log dump. It is supposed to stay relatively small, but on some versions of GB for the i9100G, this for some strange reason (that I don't know, since I don't have an i9100G) grows erroneously large.
The workaround detailed in the thread I linked above is to remove execute permissions from the dumpstate file. This has the effect of the system being unable to create the wifi dump file, thus no longer eating up the space on that 2gb partition.

So if you see the file, I can only assume you are rooted? Then delete the file.
Follow directions in the linked thread to prevent further dump files from being created.

It really says "Bad mode"?
I take it you read post 10 of the thread I linked above?
If you are having issues with adb, then use option c from that post. You need to mount /system as R/W before you will be allowed to change permissions on the dumpstate file though.
EDIT: wait a sec. You actually DELETED the /system/bin/dumpstate file? Well, I wouldn't have done that, but that should also solve your problem, since now the file just doesn't exist, so no more dump files will get generated. It also would probably be the reason you can't change permissions on that file. Since you deleted it, it doesn't exist anymore, so you can no longer change permissions on it. ( )
The file(s) I was telling you to delete was whatever wifi dump files were in /data. NOT the /system/bin/dumpstate file. I was saying you just needed to remove execute permission from that file so it would be unable to generate any more dump files.

Oh! I misunderstood you. No of course i tried this adb thing before deleting it. And it said bad mode. Then i deleted it. Isn't this a file to give the command of making these dump files about wifi error? To hell with it! What would i do with that anyway? Nothing wrong will happen. It's like ending the dumprep.exe process on windows xp. And by the way, even when i did the R/W thing, it still said that the file is Read only, and i can't access its permissions. That I9100G is a pain in the freaking a$$: it always needs a "special" kind of everything!
Thank you very much anyway for your help That was too the point and very professional It's sure that you will have my thanks.

the entire storage inside the phone is one 16GB sd card which is built into the phone. there are different partitions on there:
your system is on the 1GB partition /system/, your rom, your system apps and settings are stored there.
then there is a 2GB partition /data/, that is exclusively for user installed apps and their data, from the play store for instance.
there are some other minor partitions and then there is about 12GB of "usb storage", shown as /sdcard/.
if you don't use the /data/ partition for apps, it will remain entirely empty and unused. and in the last sentence of the first paragraph you state you want it for the system, but that does not work, the /system/ partition will always be 1GB and not use /data/.
Another reason I asked and informed you of the fact that it is the same card is, some people think, app2sd is faster, or slower or makes any difference whatsoever to the system, but it is the same card, same speed, only that app2sd wastes space.
i know, this still does not do anything about your problem, but is meant purely for your information, so in the future you can make an informed decision, where what data goes and that you should use the data partition.
i currently have 130 apps installed (some of which are games of >40MB), all internally and use 1GB of the /data/ partition, at the most i had 340 apps (most of them rather small though) and it still was not full.
Hello,
I hv rooted my device (Canvas HD). IT has 4GB Internal memory and out of it 1.77 GB is user usable space. And 1GB is ROM. So doe sthat mean the rest are used by The OS?
Anyway I wen to root and browsed to /system folder using the root explorer, it shows 624.67 MB used and 15.94 MB free. Is it normal?
Why the root explorer shows used and free space only for /system folder?
The /system/app folder shows only .apk and .odex version of some apks. So is this folder only a container of these apps. So can we delete these apps or move it to external SD to make more space inside the /system folder?
Am I going to loose any functionality in the device if I delete few apps inside this /system/app folder?
Please help me.

from my understanding on the subject, and I'm far from an expert, you can delete the apks in the app folder.
i'm in the process of creating a ROM. on my S4 in the app folder, there is SetupWizard.apk. I don't want this to be installed once I flash this. I delete this apk and it wont be on the phone.
now I have a question, hopefully someone can answer...once I delete the SetupWizard.apk are there any other associated files that I need to delete or modify?
To answer both your questions yes there are various apps in /system/app that can be deleted but many of them can cause unwanted issues. Be careful what you delete and always have a backup.
Moving apps from system to SD isn't always a great idea, actually chances are you don't need to create extra space there if your ROM is up and running, most of the time all additional apps should go to your data partition and yes some times its makes sense to put them on SD fat32 or ext partition.
Deleting the setup wizard won't cause any specific harm but the initial setup your phone business will be gone at first boot of a fresh flash.
Just Google search safe to remove system apps to find some hints on what is safe to delete, of course this varies on every phone what kinds of bloat etc is on there

I think its system partition, where all the files requires to run your phone are stored there.

oh see this post too.

misc files seems to be generated by the Camera app (I use OpenCamera, so that's probably why I don't have this "misc" data)
--------------------- other reasons -----------------
1. you are installing big APK files that don't use obb files (normally amazon app store uses these types, possibly other app stores), so all the big data gets written to the /data/data/ or /data/app dir taking up space.
2. system backups from twrp or similar can eat a lot of space. this could be why it's listed as system data
3. install sdmaid see if it finds anything abnormal.
4. (unlikely) you have a lot of apps installing to the "Internal Memory" - android thinks it's a sdcard - these apps are hidden under /mnt/sdcard0/.android_secure
(mounted with a fake mount point to prevent access, also a hidden folder) so you can't modify apps or view contents - try uninstalling apps to see if size changes.

Any idea or command that I can scan /data folder via adb command on pc?
I don't want to root currently.
Tried all but not able to find what is eating my all space...
Any why it's not deleted even after reset .
open the Camera app properties click force stop and clear data and clear cache, see if that does it, without root you will be unable to browse in /data/data

Click to collapse
Thanks for help...
But deleting camera app data or cache did not help.

Now I think I can't find that misc without root.
So I leaved it until I root.
Now I watched some youtube videos and added my nano sim with sd card.
And able to use both dual sim and sd.
Moved some internal data in sd...atleast made some more space with the help of sd. ??☺☺
Delete local back up
You must have enabled local storage backup. Delete it and you'll free up and lot of space.
Here's how you can delete it
