Often on the marketplace, I see comments such as "drains battery" or "saves battery" for many apps, such as task killers. Now, aside from the "oh look my battery seems to last longer" or "oh look my battery seems to suck now" subjective point-of-views after installing apps in question (there are various different reasons as to why battery performance can differ from day to day), how do people evaluate the effect of an app on battery? AFAIK if an app is not listed under "Battery use", then it has little to no effect on eating the battery (I don't know about helping battery usage).
Any input?
I use a fairly simple strategy to maximize my battery life. Two key applications help me wring the best life I can out of what I have going (Juice Defender and Spare Parts). Juice Defender presents a limited window of opportunity for background apps to sync themselves when the phone is asleep which helps with partial wake usage. Spare Parts allows me to examine relatively detailed statistics of what uses the battery when. And again partial wake usage seems to be the critical area one can take control of.
You can get some more detailed info about battery use with Spare Parts of course but probably the most important area to try to glean info from is "Partial Wake Usage". In order for many apps (news, rss, social networking services etc..) to function they have to periodically update themselves and most will do this from a partial wake state if the phone is off and in your holster or pocket. How efficiently these types of apps wake up get what they need and let the phone go back to sleep can have a huge impact on your battery life. How often these types of applications update themselves also plays a critical role in battery life as well.
I have generally excellent battery life, especially given all the apps I have that frequently update their data (Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Daily Briefing, NewsRob, Engadget, Fmylife) and the fairly frequent texts and calls I get.

I agree. And I don't see how automated task killers can benefit our android phones.

Hi all, I recently switched from stock roms on my fascinate to a couple different voodoo based ones (evil, community rom) and since then I've had a huge decline in battery. When I check usage stats the display is causing 80-85% of it. I have it set on the lowest brightness and it doesn't make a difference. Could this be related to voodoo being enabled?
Unlikely, sounds like you might have an app keeping it active. Voodoo changes the file system, should no cause an issue with the display.

It depends if he is using any of the voodoo kernel, which would impact color, sound and so on.
It is said to have impact on battery life while on voodoo.
voodoo or non voodoo display will always be the highest use of the battery. I've not noticed any difference in battery I get on average 30hrs of battery life no matter what

Thanks guys. I'm pretty certain there's no stray app causing the drain, I've tried closing out all processes for a day and barely using phone or data and it still says display causes 85% of battery drain. Is there any other possible explanation?
Honestly, compared to other things, your display drains alot more power than anything. I have had my phone in standby all night and it will still show display as using the most power, I run mine at 0% brghtness most of the day(because I am mostly inside) and no matter what mine always shows 80% or higher in Battery Stats.
I may be completely wrong on this but based off other discussions on this same topic. The answer seems to be the same. That the diplay compared to the phone process and so forth, will always be a bigger drain on battery life.
Hope this helps.
Its normal for the screen to be the highest. If you are getting decreased battery life then first thing to try is resettimg the battery stats and recalibrating. If that doesn't work then you'll need to take a closer look at cpu usage.
i was looking for a long time to increase my touchpad battery life on android and i found that option that did it like magic so i wanted to share it with u
settings > developer options > don't keep activities
is this in the stock rom or it is cm option and is there any app makes the same function
the only disadvantage of this it is mess with multitasking but it isn't annoying .. i prefer the battery life
thanks for the tip
im gonna try this today and see how much better the battery life is.
thanks for the info

It screws up shutdown widgets because they close as soon as they're activated. The only way to shutdown or reboot the tablet is with the power button- for me at least. I deactivated it.
dude
Dont post things like this in DEV SECTION.
I dont know if some moderator is gonna close it. Idnc
But just for the info. It goes more in general section
How does this safe battery life? As far as I know this option will prevent background processes from running, so if you have something wasting CPU cycles in the background it could improve battery life. But any decent app should sit idle in the RAM using a marginal amount of power.

Seems to me that this question is irrelevent. It is so simple the try that who cares how it works? Either it extends your battery life without hurting your "user experience" or it doesn't.

Hi.
I was wondering, should I use Greenify on N version or no?
I'm using Greenify on Android N Preview. It works very well except minor bugs.
Yeah U can use but that's available for nexus devices only.. and greenify android N build works fine except few bugs because that's in testing stage
sorry to bring back but my question is: is it beneficial having greenify when android nougat already pretty much does its function ( as far as i know) correct me if im wrong plz

I use it, it really doesn't disturb
If you not sure, just use it as "screen off" button
I got better battery life without Greenify installed.

Through monitoring many battery cycles. I've had Greenify since the beginning and is still running it on my Droid MAXX. The best way to increase battery life on Nougat is to disable your notifications manually on apps. FB for example is a battery hog but you can mitigate a lot of that by turning off functions from within the app. If not, it will keep draining even with Greenify enabled. My idle drain is improved without Greenify, it goes into doze much better. Aggressive doze never worked properly for me.

OK, thanks. I will give it a try!
I retract my statement implying that Greenify is no longer relevant with Nougat. I reinstalled Greenify today so I can freeze my LG TV app because it wants to be a battery hog. Seems to be working. I'm running Greenify in non-root mode since I also enjoy the convenience of Android Pay and Google has decided to take the fun out of having an unlocked bootloader.

I feel battery drain in much much faster in idle mode when greenify is set. My Moto X play has 3630 mah battery, and was not even lasting a full day with greenify. From 3 days i uninstalled it and testing my phone without any battery saving apps. It is much better and the drain in idle mode is improved!!!

Hard to assess such claims without supporting data. Not saying you're wrong but root cause can not be determined w/o evidence.

These are the observations on my specific rooted device. Looks like N is managing good enough the battery. Also, with Greenify running and most of the apps set to greenify, everytime 3-4% of battery is drained when i do a couple of quick reboots.
But without greenify or any other xxx-ify apps, its just 1% everytime, it is tested for multiple times.
Possibilities are plenty that others may have experienced it differently.

Thanks for the additional detail. Agreed Nougat does an admirable job on its own - a point I have emphasized in various forums. Same with Marshmallow with exception to quieting motion detection which allows the device to enter and remain in doze in real world conditions. It's amazing how many knobs and dials folks want to turn convinced that Android must be managed. Those fool's at Google clearly have no idea what they are doing (cough). Also applies to most (albeit not all) stock ROMs and kernels. If native works use it with no augmentation.
As for Greenify, simply having it installed with default settings should impose no burden. However, it does offer the ability to detect and quiet 'rogue' apps that may illude native doze. In many cases I will use Greenify to identify bad actors and then take other actions to curb unwanted behavior (eg: disable broadcast receivers). I typically have a small handful (~2-4) in Greenify's list that I can hibernate on demand via shortcut or notification.
I suspect your observations were biased by having a large suite of Greenified apps - especially if not operating in 'Boost' mode. That indeed will impose a penality as Greenify must deal with each app individually - especially on non-rooted devices.
Not advocating for Greenify - just trying to bring clarity to your observations.
Even with the exact standard settings of greenify, i am observing a rapid drain in my battery percentage!!! Now I can say that greenify consuming more battery in idle mode compared to not having greenify at all. I completely uninstalled it, and now my battery lasts for full day and at 10pm everyday i am still left with 30% of my battery. Hurray....

Likely some unique conflict with your device or its configuration. If all is well without Greenify then there is no reason to look back or continue tinkering. Enjoy.

While Greenify's utility is diminished on Android 7.x based ROMs it can still be beneficial without triggering excess drain. Depends how the app is configured and what objectives you are trying to acheive.

As previously stated depends on configuration which may extend to your specific device and/or ROM. Sorry for your unfavorable experience; does not universally apply.
Has any one tried using Greenify or Forcedoze on the S9?
Does it make any difference?
I did briefly on the S8+ but found it made no difference and if anything made it slightly worse. Modern versions of Android do all this stuff pretty good (though not as good as iOS, got some catching up to do on that) and additional apps, to me, is just placebo.
Just my experience, of course.

They actually conflict with the Doze and other optimizations of the latest Android OS. So these apps are kind of redundant I would say.
Just put all your apps to auto sleep mode via the device maintenance setting under the power option. Will really help with battery life and device overall speed.
I do use package disabler. And im able to get 6 to u hour sot everytime without force doze or greenify. Package disable hasnt help much on battery itself. But i has help alot in smoothness and standbye which doesnt drain close to any battery when screen is off.
