Update - LG V30 Questions & Answers

Please, is it better to keep Android 8 or update to Android 9, in terms of speedy performance and longer battery life?

I'm still on rooted stock Oreo myself, using the very last rock stable KDZ.

I have the Korean version. Can I install the version you have? If yes, can you give me the link?

I've been running Android 9 on my VS996 for a year and the performance and battery life are excellent. HTH

I have a rooted H932 on which I'm running Havoc 3.11 because it's still being updated with security patches. It's super stable. Unfortunately the H932 variant will no longer be allowed on Cricket after this time next year due to their system upgrades. There's a version of the V30+ that will be accepted. I'm thinking of getting one, but wondering if it will still get updated security patches if running on the latest stock ROM (Pie I believe?).

No stock firmware are getting any updates. I'm still on last rooted US998 Oreo 20h as the US998 stock Pie was wonky for many people. I don't run custom ROMs on this phone, although I did on all my other phones.
You could run Havoc 3.11 on a Cricket (AT&T owned) compatible V30+. I'm assuming you are thinking about getting an AT&T H931 and keeping it stock? Or unlocking bootloader, then flashing back to H921 Oreo TWRP-flashable zip?

@ChazzMatt Yes I was thinking about H931 on either Havoc 3.11 (because I've had great experience with it) or stock 9 or 10. I'd prefer Havoc but not sure it will be compatible with Cricket's upgrades as I believe they're moving to VOLTE? That's the deciding factor.

Yes, they will be moving to VoLTE only when AT&T drops HSPA in February 2022. You can run Havoc or any LOS-based ROM until then. Then revert back to stock rooted firmware.

Not true. H939DS Oreo is posted down in Development. Been released for awhile.
If you're talking about a specific regional flavor, please clarify and don't make a blanket statement?
"The Oreo KDZ for MY H930DS has not been released yet."
But you can flash the KDZ for the H930DS posted -- and before that was released, we found H930DS could even flash H930 KDZ.
However, VoLTE for India carriers doesn't work with those H930DS/H930 KDZ, which is problematic for Jio in particular. But others have flashed the H930DS and H930 Oreo KDZ and are quite happy for now until their regional Oreo is released. Depends on your situation.

yes if you are from India/hongkong or have a H930 phone you can flash the OREO KDZ for H930. pretty much everyone got it running. I actullay looked a lot before flashing, So you can try with a positive hope

T-Mobile US998 Users.

What roms are you running? I've been running BoomBox with no issues but I'd like to run a rom that has WiFi calling. What roms are you running for your TMobile service? How stable?
EDIT: ah, I see you clarified the question in the title.

You're talking about T-Mobile users on US998 (either converted or original) or T-Mobile users on T-Mobile H932?
Because there's a vast difference what ROMs can be run, depending on the model you have. T-mobile users on newly rooted T-mobile H932 can't run ANY custom ROMs right now.
But there are lots of T-mobile users on US998 (either converted or original). Depending on what they converted from, they can run custom ROMs. However, former H933 and H931 converted to US998 cannot run AOSP custom ROMs -- but can run stock-based custom ROMs. Original US998 or converted from Sprint LS998, regional carrier AS998, Verizon VS996 have no such restrictions.

That's just stock US998 20D. @westwood24 made it into a TWRP flashable zip file, so you can flash it like a ROM.
It's great for updating like from 20A or 20B, after bootloader unlock, installing TWRP.
You can get the same firmware by flashing 20D KDZ... But it's harder than just flashing that with TWRP.

Interested in seeing it when it's finished
US998 seems to be working with T-Mobile wifi calling well. I tried to enable it on At&t and it told me that I have not configured my T-Mobile SIM right. It's obvious that that this is designed for T-Mobile wifi calling.
Anyway to get this enabled for 9 GSI?

Update an H930DS (V30+) AME region (Middle East) to HK/TW Pie?

Hey, I bought a LG H930DS from a reseller who was probably importing stuff from abroad, so while I'm mostly based in EU, I've the AME region in my phone (all stock).
And so far, no OTA or LG Bridge update for me and still sticking to V20f-AME-XX... There has been some slight delay even on Oreo, but wasn't so long IIRC.
However, at this point, since I don't care about sticking to this region, would be safe to update it to HK (or maybe the recently arrived TW) images, preferably without loosing data, and (for sure) dual-sim?
I've seen the changing region topic has already been covered in the past, and so in theory should be, fine but I wonder if the fact that would also imply a switch to a mayor release anything.
And if all is good, can I just use LGUP?
same here , i also own the h930ds with v20f-ame version . there's no 9.0 pie ota update nor kdz for it till now

That link you posted is from 2 years ago. Some of that information is not correct. At one point we thought flashing H930 over H930DS changed bands but it doesn't. Remains H930DS bands. We also thought flashing H930 over H930DS made the 2nd SIM not work, but it doesn't. Both SIMs still work. That's the danger of looking at very old threads. Back in Feb 2018 we didn't know all we do now.
And we can't go back and change every thread from two years ago...
You can flash any H930DS Pie or even EU H930 Pie KDZ and your phone will have Pie.
The only caveat is if any carriers have VoLTE/WiFi calling on AME firmware, by now having different firmware those options will probably not work. However, even that isn't always true... On latter EU Oreo H930 KDZ, the India Jio VoLTE started working when on earlier EU H930 it did not. At first the India carrier VoLTE was only reserved for India region KDZ.
I don't know about AME carriers.
Thank you, in fact I was quite sure this wasn't anymore the case as I read updates around later the post.
However, I don't need VoLTE calls, nor AME carriers, given I live in Europe.

I also live in the EU and have the H930DS AME version.
If you don't care about Volte (I don't know if it works as my carriers don't use it anyway), then you can safely update to any H930 or H930DS variant via LG-UP.
Personally I am using the EU H930 firmware as I found it was the one with more regular updates. The calls and data work perfectly fine in both my SIM cards.
The only change I noticed is that despite flashing the EU region firmware, in the phone settings it is shown as GLOBAL-COM, and I never received OTA firmware updates, I always had to update via LG-UP. But I don't think we are going to see more updates from now on, so this is not really an inconvenience.

Strange your WiFi isn't working. What happens when you manually turn it on and off?
Also try latest 31a EU H930.

Thank you for the replay
Wifi is on but it couldn't connect to router probably.
After 10 times turning on and off the wifi or manually select connect it will connect to router but about 5 seconds after that it will get disconnected again. Sometimes it would stay connected about 1 hour but that is rarely happened. It could not also connect to other phone's hotspot. Changing the adsl modem couldn't help that
. I tried liquid remix based on pie and found the same issue. I used to use the phone about 2 month like that but couldn't stand that way and rolled back to oreo
I guess pie roms wont work on the ame version yet

Wait. Are you talking about Wi-Fi on rooted stock firmware OR are you talking about Wi-Fi not working on LOS-17 based custom ROMs?
No one is complaining about Wi-Fi not working on stock Pie firmware. Even other AME users who installed EU H930 Pie.
People like this below would have noted if Wi-Fi wasn't working.

Strange. Because not many complain about Wi-Fi on stock firmware. Stock Wi-Fi is what people want back....
Having said that, I'm not a big fan of LG stock Pie. Which is why I never upgraded and an still on stock rooted Oreo.
In Pie, try flashing your Oreo AME modem in Dev Patched LGUP to get your Oreo modem back. See if that does any good for your Wi-Fi?
See here:

Well the pie modem obviously doesn't work for some devices, and the oroe modem is a fix, as mentioned here:

To do this, get the "DEV PATCHED LGUP"
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/development/h930-lg-v30-european-market-h930-t3779076
1) Go into download mode (power off completely, then hold volume up button while plugging in USB cable)
2) open patched LGUP and flash OREO KDZ to DL PARTITION mode.
Click "start"
In the pop up box select only "modem"
Restart, done.

Yes you can use LG-UP to flash any firmware from H930DS or H930 without wiping data. You will only lose your home screen configuration. Just make sure to select update and not refurbish on LG-UP. The AME version has never updated from V20f, so this would be your only option to get more recent updates.

LS998 or US998

I found this on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/LG-V30-US9...D4AAOSwqj9beX9a:sc:USPSFirstClass!95132!US!-1
I was wondering if this was an actual US998 or a flashed LS998 because some of the feedback claims that this is a LS998. I see 1,800 units were sold so I'm hoping there's atleast one person on this forum who also bought from this seller. Also, I am on T-mobile, so I was wondering how it would affect the functionality of the phone if it were a LS998.

Doesn't matter. I've had both native US998 V30+ and converted US998 V30+ (former LS998)
Once converted, its fully US998. For T-Mobile or AT&T it will work. However, for Verizon, you would need an already-activated SIM card or a very helpful rep willing to break the rules.
I've bought from that seller several times. My brother-in-law, sister, couple of friends are all using former LS998 converted to US998 from that specific seller.

Pie makes changes. People have found charging is slower, and many people complain Wi-Fi signal is weaker. Your mileage may vary. Yet you NEED stock LG Pie as a base to install/run the newer LOS-17 "Android 10" custom ROMs. For people who decide to go back to stock rooted firmware, perhaps with some Magisk mods -- instead of running full custom ROM -- they often make the decision to go back to last stable Oreo.
I have instructions in every Pie KDZ thread how to use Dev Patched LGUP to downgrade back to Oreo. The "Pie problem" you are referring to is many people then have to use permissive kernel for camera/flashlight to work when downgrading, since Pie made changes. Also some other sensors may not work.
If you are down converting back to Oreo because you don't like Pie the best way is to first downgrade to Nougat via Partition DL, then update back to Oreo. This seems to erase the stock Pie effect. Even better (for North American variants, EXCEPT for T-mobile H932!) first flash Canada H933 Nougat via Partition DL mode -- as it has different partition structure (like a sandblaster) -- then go back to US998 Nougat, then US998 Oreo.
For the H930 variants, you shouldn't cross flash to North American variants. Just Partition DL to Nougat H930 and then upgrade back to Oreo.

Thank you! My entire objective is to install Lineage along with Magisk to this phone. So when you say stock LG pie, do you mean any update/version of Pie that comes on the phone when I receive it? Or do I need to specifically have a certain version of Pie? Like if it's on an updated version pushed out OTA for this month vs last month for example. The phone I'm getting is a V30+ US998.

Right now, US998 has only had one Pie KDZ release.
When you get your US998 V30+ it will probably come with Nougat or Oreo and you will have to manually update it. Being totally honest, it will probably be an already-converted LS998 V30+ to US998 V30+. Nothing wrong with that, I've bought several -- my sister and two brothers-in-law use those... But on those, you will never get "OTA". You have to manually update, either via KDZ or TWRP-flashable zip.
If it already has Pie, you will still have to temporarily downgrade to early Oreo to unlock bootloader and root. Then you would update to more current firmware.
ROOT Your LG V30!
If you haven't read that Sticky Guide, please do.

Thank you. I was just making sure because I know when I used to root phones back then, security patches and such would sometimes render certain methods unusable. I read that thread but didn't see any mention (probably because it has no issues) of security patches messing with rooting? So that's all I'm making sure of.

All my Guides are current, if that's what you are asking. Especially the sticky " Root Your V39!" thread, the WTF INSTRUCTIONS, all my Oreo and Pie KDZ threads, and Frankenstein instructions thread.

Greets to both of you. I know the above quoted posts are several months old, but I'm kinda frustrated over finding reliable phone sellers on eBay and want to ask, can either of you tell me the name of the seller you were talking about here? I've had to return three phones because of various weirdnesses in phones received (ilke one in Danish and another in Chinese) and then it took way too long to get refunded. I could really use a good recommendation. I've got a list of several LG V30s for sale (and half of them are LS998) but hesitant to buy again because of the bad experiences. Message me if preferred, if you can help at all. TIA!

The name of the seller was yywireless. The phone was mostly fine except for a one scratch on the back, a few chips on the side, and the charging port looks like someone missed a lot. Yywireless seems to have raised the prices though.

Thanks! This seller has a loooong list of phones for sale and I don't know yet if he has what I want. If nothing else I'll catalog the name for future reference. The biggest thing is just knowing whether an eBay seller is reliable as to merchandise or not. As for prices, I would definitely pay more to a dependable/honest seller. Thanks again, especially for responding so quickly!

I bought several LS998 V30+ from him. Some were already converted to US998.

Need help... bit confused Android Pie Update At&t

Hi Folks,
I am new to community. Have been getting help from all of you but posting for the 1st time. I have At&t H931 V30. Stuck on android Oreo July 2018 security patch. Have gone through Frankenstein process post and ready to convert to US998 carrier just to enjoy the slice of pie.
Now Im confused it to the point that do I need to do WTF method as well to unlock bootloader for pie upgradation. I don't want to root the device. Just want to flash latest android pie on my V30. At&t has officially launched pie update in sept 2019 but I understand there is no kdz file and this is the only way.
Help would be much appreciated. LGUP dual mode also confused me. What if i only follow LGUP method and not go with the repatched version.
Thanks in advance

You don't need to use WTF INSTRUCTIONS just to Frankenstein to US998 and update to US998 Pie.
WTF instructions are ONLY for Bootloader Unlock, installing TWRP and Root.
This is what you want. See post #1:
AT&T H931/Sprint LS998 conversion to US998 to be able to get updates
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/how-to/ls998-h931-how-to-update-t3927155
It will explain and take you to Frankenstein instructions...
After TEMPORARILY downgrading to US998 Nougat, then Master Reset (all explained in the Frankenstein instructions). But instead of upgrading to Oreo, you would flash US998 Pie from the Pie KDZ thread.
See post #2 for Pie KDZ:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/development/us998-lg-v30-us998-us99830a000704-kdz-t3952256
EDIT:
However, some people have not been able to update to the US998 Pie. If that happens, you can always use the Canada H933 Nougat then Pie KDZ conversion.
Since you don't care about root, that would work well for you, if you can't update to US998 Pie (it's a wonky KDZ).
H933 has more LTE bands than US998, actually...
Thanks will do that
Just one more thing I also checked my phones imei is not of original at&t LG V30 infact it is showing of some other phone. Its working till now. Would pie update change the imei or if not can it cause some issue later on? I hope imei would remain the same

No, IMEI is not touched by anything we do in this V30 forum. At least nothing in any of my instructions. Your IMEI will remain the same.
