Chromebook external storage? - Chromebooks

Is there any way to install the Linux beta to an external device such as usb? If not, how can I run linux off of the usb without taking storage space on my chromebook? Any info regarding this topic would be helpful.

Even I was looking to do the same in my HP Chromebook 11a and I asked at several places only to know that you need to sacrifice some space for it.

Using the Atrix as a boot device

just wondering if any smart devs have any thoughts on this:
When the Atrix (or i suppose any android device) is in usb storage mode it runs as a simple mass storage device.
So is it possible to boot a PC from the atrix like you would boot a portable OS (Ubuntu, WinPE, ect) from a USB flash drive?
The SD card or the Internal storage has the room for it, but i don't know how you'd go about making either a bootable device.
It'd be a good diagnostic tool when fixing PCs, and along with webtop would make it a awesome tool to use as a tech.

I was thinking about this actually.
I think we have to first partion the SD card and install the portable OS on one of those partions.
I don't have an atrix yet but I'm going to try something with my older phone I think I can make this work just give me sometime.
Any luck with this?
I plan on trying GParted (free GUI disk partition editor)... http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
It offers quite an array of filesystem options including, but not limited to:
ext2 / ext3 / ext4
fat16 / fat32
linux-swap
ntfs
ufs
xfs
I'm not sure if my rooted AT&T Atrix will reject my attempts to create an ntfs partition, or if GParted will even recognize it. But it's still worth a try

[Q] external hdd write problem

Hi,
I recently bought a Archos Gen9 ICS.
Using the host cable I can copy from internal memory to USB (fat32) without a problem. This also works when connecting the USB using the 3G input.
However when I connect an external HDD (ntfs) using the 3G input it's recognized, but I can't copy files to it. In the default file manager I don't even have the "paste" button when I select the drive. Astro said something about the drive being read-only.
(btw...copying files to the usb-stick didn't even work with astro...it always complained about not being able to create a new directory. Anyway if the default file manager works, that's fine by me)
What could be the problem here? Is it file system related or...?
Hope someone knows the answer.
Thanks in advance!

Write support on ntfs file system isnt given.
You could reformat your hard drive as fat 32 but i wouldnt do so.
You would lose support for big files over 4 gb, you would lose all your data, etc.
it is kernel related, perhaps it might be possible to trick your archos if you feed it with ntfs-3g, but i dont know if it is possible. It would be tricky, you would have to find arm binery therefore. There is a thread here on xda in same subsection gen9 android developement.

You could try that and report if you successed.
Greatings.
Thx for your quick reply.
I didn't know that ntfs write wasn't possible at the moment...
I'll probably convert my hdd back to fat32, or buy a "bigger" usb stick

[Q] Creating a bootable SD card from within Android

Is it possible to do this within Android?
At the moment I've this rooted phone running ICS, an SD card, an SD to USB reader and a netbook that once ran windows 7 until an hour ago. Oh and no working computer access for a few days.
I've installed a couple of versions of linux on PC's in the past, mainly as quick fixes between windows installations as I've proved myself too much of a novice to use it full time, so I know it can be done from an SD card easily enough should you be able to make one bootable with linux installed.
As I've only got this phone for a few days, would it be possible to do the above directly from this device?
I've searched google for every term and question I can think of but nothing is findable given the number of people lokig to do it the other way by installing things to their phones!
Is it even possible?
this will be a no then lol.
looks like I'll need to wait

Xiaomi Mi Box 3 (MDZ-16-AB), external storage questions

These are the cheap AndroidTV 6 boxes you can find on eBay, Amazon, Walmart, et al. I'm not concerned with rooting the device, from what I've read that's not possible (at least not if you don't want it permanently tethered to a PC). I am interested in using an external hard drive as external (_NOT_ internal) storage without having to format it FAT32, is that possible?
My issue is, I have a Seagate external hard drive that I would like to use both as a general backup device, and as portable storage for my movie and music collection. My desktop PC runs Ubuntu Linux and I do have files I would like to backup that require (or at least would benefit from) a filesystem that is case-sensitive and preserves Linux permissions. I've tried formatting the drive as ext2, 3 and 4 on my desktop PC and AndroidTV recognizes it, but will not mount it, I only have the options to prepare the drive as "Internal" or "External" storage. If I prepare it as internal storage, I find that it's formatted as FAT32 with a similar directory structure as the SD card in my Android phone. If I prepare it as external storage, I find that there is a single partition that my desktop sees as "unknown" (I'm assuming it's an encrypted ext2, 3 or 4 fs). Partitioning doesn't help, I've tried splitting the drive evenly between FAT32 and ext4 partitions and my AndroidTV box can see and mount the FAT32 partition but cannot safely unmount it (I'm assuming because of the second partition that it can't do anything with).
Is there anything I can do, without rooting the device, to get it to recognize ext2, 3 or 4 (or literally _any_ other Linux compatible, case-sensitive filesystem) as external storage?
I suggest use plex server on Ubuntu and let the hdd always connected to Ubuntu. Access media content from plex app on mi box

I suggest to check out Emby
It is an open source media server which worth a try.
Mi Box different models. consfused please help!!
The Mi Box reviews are available all over the internet.
But it is becoming very difficult for a noob like me to understand what features are there in each model.
I have been looking at MDZ-16AB, 3C, 3S etc. it is very confusing to understand which is predecessor of whom.
One comparison that i see here but is has completely different naming convention to understand

Then there is one Mi Box which is avialable with SD card option, OTG option, which version is this?

Can someone please tell which version is the best? I plan to use it overseas and buy it in US.
Any other box that I should consider (I wish to have Google Cast functionality in that box)
Please help.

What's the device expected by make_f2fs.exe on Windows

Hi guys.
I'm trying to format an USB flash disk for using it as additional internal storage on an Android TV.
Doing this using the TVs interface seems to take forever and the TV needs to stay on continuously. Last time I turned the TV off after around 3 days of waiting for nothing...
In the same folder with the platform tools (adb.exe), there are these 2 other utilities who seem to be related to what I want, make_f2fs.exe and mke2fs.exe.
Their help suggests that they expect a device parameter, which on Linux is the /dev/... file.
Anybody knows what's the equivalent in Windows?
Thank you!
PS: if you think I asked the question in the wrong forum, please be so kind and redirect me to the better one..
In the end, I solved my initial problem (adding more internal storage to my TV) by installing a Linux VM and formatting my flash disk with F2FS.
The operation on the TV was pretty straight forward, the flash disk appeared as a new drive on the TVs interface, I just needed to select it and format it as internal storage which took only a few minutes for a 32 GB device.
However, if at some point someone has an idea about how make_f2fs.exe can be used on Windows, please share
Thank you.
