USB OTG Access - Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 / S7 Plus Questions & Answer

Hello All,
I want to use an external SD card using the OTG. The card is mounted and accessibble in the My Files app.
BUT no other app (gallery, etc.) can access the files on USB OTG. Why is that, can I somehow fix that?

Go to Settings and search for Permission manager, then scroll down to storage and you will see a list of apps that have permission to write to storage. Make sure you add the apps that need access, by finding them in the list at the bottom of the storage page and granting them permission.

Storage permission is granted: internal and external storage can be accessed, only OTG is unavailable.

If you go into Settings<Battery and Device care< Storage<hit three dots at top right and Advanced, I assume that you see the USB drive? Then in My Files, can you explore the USB device and open files? I just tried w a picture that Gallery opened just fine, an mp3 that my music programs like MX Player could open, etc. I have an S7

From My Files app I can acces the OTG, but e.g. the Gallery app I cannot acces the photos on it.

I'm stumped. Have you tried a third-party file explorer such as FX, by chance? You would have to grant it access, but I have no problem accessing USB files through it.
You might also try rebooting with the USB stick inserted

I would like to browse the photos in the built in gallery not in a 3rd party app.
Reboot with USB does not fix the access.

Some Files Not Showing When Connected To PC

I am having an issue with files not showing up on my PC, that are in root explorer. I search the directory on my PC and and it doesn't come up.
By default, GS2 connects in MTP mode which only shows/transfers media files (videos and pictures). You will need to connect as Mass Storage mode in order to show everything. Go to Settings->Wireless and networking->USB->Enabled USB Mass Storage before you connect the USB. Then you connec the USB and hit the button screen to enable the storage. This way, the phone storage will show up as a external drive.

Thanks I was able to view the files on the PC, I just can't see all the files. I am trying to access the directory. data/data/com.com.2us.HB3D to replace a comlib.dat file. I see this directory in root explorer, but on the PC I can only see /data/datacom.com.2us.HB3D and not any other files.

maybe I'm wrong but I didnt think you can see all your files on sdcard due to security reasons. Only files that are in the "sdcard" folder, or whatever its named now

Figured it out just now, a while ago when clicking SD card in root explorer, it would come up with "SD card not mounted". So what fox told me earlier did work! I transferred the file I needed to "USB Storage", then went to "SD Card" in root explorer and pasted the file over.
i guess i was wrong. glad to see you got it working, though.

[Q] how to fix hidden files via MTP?

i want to view all files/folders when viewing folders via USB. now mass storage is an option on my phone but only for mSD, not for internal and old apps don't work anymore on 4.3.
any way around this or am i forced to move files around on my phone 1st?
If you're on Windows and use Total Commander, there's a freeware ADB plugin for accessing both internal and external storage. You'll need to tick Show hidden files option in TC settings to see all the files. Access the phone thru Network panel, like a network share.
cool. will deffo try that! annoying having to work around this
do you have to isntall total commanded on the phone too?
i'm getting no response fromthe ADB server error.

Unmount USB Flash OTG Storage

Is there a faster way to unmount a usb flash drive than going through Settings>Storage>Unmount? Tried to find a way to add a shortcut but doesn't seem option is available. I tried StickMount but when I unmount through that, it says the drive has been unmounted but it has not. It still shows up in the file explorer. And going to Settings>Storage shows it's still mounted. I would prefer if there was something in the notification panel (like what StickMount adds) or a Quick Settings tile I could just tap to unmount completely. Anyone know of an Xposed mod or something that can add this? Or a custom ROM that has this built in?

Uhm just unplug it. If the app that was using it has been terminated then the drive is not being read or written too any longer and data would not be corrupted. Android is not like a PC in the fact it constantly monitors a USB drive changes. So just unplug it. I do it all the time and have never had an issue.

Mi Box TV 2016 intl. Edition - External Memory Expansion issue

I am on a XIAOMI MI BOX TV, US 2016 EDITION.
I manage to format the USB pendrive as "internal storage". I had to try several times as it was failing, but eventually I made it.
I can now move some apps manually to it (i need to browse each app one by one from the internal storage, then select the external drive. This is not available for all apps though, i dont know why).
But whn I try STORAGE> USB DRIVE> MIGRATE > MOVE NOW , i get a "Unfortunately, settings has stopped working.", and nothing happens.
Not a huge problem as I can still move manually most apps, but I still experience these issues:
I need to storage a large collection of emulator ROMs on the USB DRIVE, but in the current status I am not able to select the USB Drive in ES EXPLORER
Not all apps are movable to USB DRIVE, slowly filling the internal memory as the number of apps increases
I need to move manually the apps one by one
Any idea on how to solve the MOVE issue, or any workaround for the points below?
I am using a Lexar JumpDrive S45 usb 3.0 64 GB .
Previously I also used an old SanDisk 8GB. It formatted at first try, but gave the same MOVE issue.
USB debugging is OFF.
cheers!
I got the same error, any clue?

[Help] OTG access by music players not working

Vzw phone so no root access. Note my phone is a Play version.
Solid Explorer, the new one, works and shows path of : /mnt/media_rw/0EB0-0FF1. It also asks for permissions and you can successfully grant them. Yet you cannot see this folder/drive while exploring /mnt. It creates it's own shortcut and browsing is fine that way..
Neutron sees the drive and tries the get permissions but you never get to grant them.
Google Player (stock), Player Dreams, Jetaudio, Hiby and Kamerton do not see the drive at all.
Has anyone had success with any player accessing OTG drives?
I'm having the same problem, I couldn't access my NTFS formatted stick with neither using stickmount nor the Paragon app.
After reformatting my stick to FAT32 it's mounted by the system but only accessible and usable by the integrated android file manager.
I now tried total commander and the Paragon plugin and this way you can access files and play them in your standard player and it's even able to load subtitles to a movie but this way it's not even mounted as separate device anymore and therefore not visible to anything.
I'm using the TurboZ kernel and already wrote the creator about the NTFS problem.

I take it you are still on MM.
I found some better filers but still no players.
MM is a tricky one for Dev's to get OTG right. I read many stackoverflow comments, hence the shortage of apps. I think N might be worse.
See here and other recent post of mine.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3533577
Yes I'm still on MM
It's not the file managers fault but more that there's no reliable/functioning way to actually mount an NTFS or even FAT32 OTG stick in a manner that it's easily visible for apps and such under marshmallow.
I tried a few of your suggested apps but only x-plore and "file manager by scavengers" offered an access to the USB stick prompt but didn't actually display it then (probably because of NTFS) or offer a real mount option so they are not helping with my problem but thanks anyway for the help/suggestion.
Actual mounting isn't supported under marshmallow anymore (as far as I found out) so USB OTG is pretty useless now because I don't want to use a file manager to access the files and hope it's able to combine the video with the subtitle file.

Right no hard mounts anymore.
But I use xfat and all app suggestions do work. FX is best but it does not let you use all the app on your phone. But these are Dev growing pains.
I actually just managed to mount it like it used to with stickmount but with an app called "USB OTG helper" by "Ray of light"
I tried it before and it gave me the error that it couldn't create the folder where it wanted to mount the stick so it didn't work but now after installing it again it worked flawlessly.
I suspect it's because I used the "external SD card full access" option from the xposed module "installeropt" because now it didn't write any error messages and worked as expected even with an NTFS USB stick.
