I bought a Moto G Play 2021 unlocked from best buy yesterday. I can't enable "OEM unlocking" in Developer Settings. It is grayed out.
I factory reset a few times.
The phone CID is listed as a phone that can be unlocked on the Motorola site. I got the unlocking key from the Motorola site through a process that sends an email out with the key. Then I run <fastboot oem unlock "key">, but I get
(bootloader) Check 'OEM unlocking' in Android Settings > Developer
(bootloader) Options
FAILED (remote: '')
fastboot: error: Command failed
I don't think any fastboot command will work as long as the "OEM unlocking" is grayed out and disabled in settings.
Called Motorola. They offer no help.
I'm new to custom ROMs and having a hard time. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

I almost bought thru best buy and found out that Verizon/sprint was the service provider. So, I went and bought unlocked at amazon. Hopefully, not what happened to you... There was something about greyed out oem unlocking on this phone somewhere here in XDA. Do a search.

Not that unusual.
Sometimes there's a time delay, and required connection to WiFi or LTE.
Also sometimes a factory reset will ungray the OEM unlock toggle.
I suggest a factory reset, then connect to wifi if it's still grayed out, it may take a few days to change.
Also you can check the CID code list in my Bootloader unlock thread.

Tried factory reset. Tried with and without Wifi after factory reset. I don't have a sim for it yet. So can't get LTE.
Can't find a "CID code" list in your post. Do you mean a list with CID's that lets you know if your phone can be unlocked? I found my CID is allowed for unlocking on Motorola's site.
Do you know why a delay might work? You think there is a timer or something for unlocking?
Thanks

There's a link in my Bootloader unlock thread, to the official cid list, you likely have seen already.
I don't know if wifi/lte is needed just going by what has been reported in the forums for last few years.
You can wait or return the device, there isn't any other options that I know of.

How many days should I wait before returning the phone? Is there any way to know before buying which ones are bootloader unlocked?

I've seen anywhere from mins to a couple of days reported, No pattern that I can see.
Factory reset, and connecting to the internet seem to help.
You could try Flash rescue with LMSA, but I haven't seen replies that helps.
If the CID is good, and you can get the unlock code from moto site, I don't know what else could be the issue.

So after three days, I did another factory reset. Nothing changed. I then used the KingRoot app. I clicked on Root, it didn't give me a confirmation. But when I went to the Developer Settings I could enable "OEM unlocking"!!! I then used <fastboot oem unlock "key"> on the bootloader and the device is unlocked now. Can't find twrp or any ROMs for this device though
I can confirm a three day time gate on the Moto G Play 2021 I got through T-Mobile Monday. The OEM Unlock has been greyed out since I first booted. Today, Thursday, after the 72 hour window, the toggle became accessable.

Weirdly (or absurdly), yesterday I found a Lenovo forum post that says it might take up to a week to get OEM Unlock. I posted on it (here) to see if anybody else has had the same experience that I'm still in the middle of -- THREE days, on WiFi, still no unlock.
Strange(r) thing is the "advice" from Moto/Lenovo in the link relates to a 3-year-old phone. I bought a Moto G6 (carrier-unlocked & BL-unlockable -6) in mint condition, updated to latest Pie (April 2020 security patch).
But maybe the G6/plus/play is just extra-odd? I've owned and rooted or unlocked 6-8 Moto phones (see my sig, not a complete list) and I've never in the past waited more than a few minutes to get OEM Unlock enabled. And all it took with my lady's Moto G Stylus '21 was making a WiFi connection, as has been super-typical for me.
I guess I'm just babbling out of frustration. Seems this mystery only gets weirder.
Edit to add, your last comment addresses one niddly little question I put forth in my post linked above . . . my CID (0x032) says the phone is unlockable, and I already got the unlock code from Moto. Is there ANY other detail, in getvar or anywhere, that might reveal that a phone is NOT unlockable?

The CID is the only thing to look at, that I know of.
Usually, OEM unlock is available within 3 days, but some have reported a couple of weeks.
Factory Reset seems to help if it's been over 3 days, but you will need to reconnect to the internet.

Thanks man. I haven't tried FDR yet, afraid of starting the countdown all over again. But if I don't get unlock in the next day or two I'll give it a shot.
Edit-- I was wondering as much as anything if maybe this phone could be an unlockable Amazon variant that had been blasted with stock firmware to hide the fact. But I don't even know how that could be done.

Ooooh dang. I mangled this convo. Clarification, the Moto G Stylus (not Play) is my lady's phone. The phone I'm currently struggling with is a G6 (unlocked version XT1925-6). That one is Ali. Her Stylus is codename Minsk. I unlocked and rooted her Stylus (via Magisk patch) months ago, no problems there. Serious apologies for channeling down the wrong road in this thread.

I just bought my vs987 less than a week ago, and when I install my T-Mobile sim card, I'm able to place calls but I'm unable to use the cellular data. I thought these were supposed to be unlocked? My data works fine when I use the Verizon sim card.
Also, when I first started it up I noticed that my "Software status" said "modified." Does that mean that this phone was previously owned/tampered with? I updated to 7.0 Nougat via Uppercut and LGUP, and now it says "Official." So, I'm a bit alarmed by what was there previously...
Can someone address both of these concerns?
Also, in "About Phone" in the settings menu there is no "Update Center" option. I looked in this video and it appears there.
https://youtu.be/gXeKZ6Dk4Fg
Is that normal, too?
I would appreciate the feedback because I'm a bit anxious due to the fact that Best Buy apparently charges $35 for returns or exchanges on phones. -_-
Do you know if the bootloader is unlocked? Because on some phones when the bootloader is unlocked if causes some problems especially on stock firmwares!

How can I go about verifying whether it's unlocked or not? I swear if something is wrong they better not charge me $35. I will dispute them via my CC company if they do.
Well a simple way is when it boots up it says “bootloader unlocked and visit this link” or something in that nature and a nother way of checking is going into settings - about phone - software info - click build number 8 times - back to settings - developer options... And if enable OEM Unlock is checked... Your bootloader is unlocked

I checked and there isn't an option for OEM Unlock in the dev options.
Edit: I think this is because the vs987 isn't rootable.
Hmm well I honestly don't know what could be causing this problem I would suggest finding another official KDZ (don't downgrade) from here http://downloads.codefi.re/autoprime/LG/LG_G5/VS987/VS98711A and if possible factory reset before and after

Hello XDA, I've been wanting to root my S6 for a while now, and i think you can do it with adb. So when trying this i noticed i needed an unlocked bootloader, and i thought i had it because i had CRom service on my S6, but never opened it. When i did, it just crashed. Now, i'm not sure if I can just use
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
or i need something else. I'm on Mac so i am very, very limited. I at least can get adb to work. If i can use adb and or fastboot to unlock my device's bootloader (without messing DM Verity) then please tell me right away.

What variant s6 do you have?
Go to Settings - About Device - Build number. Tap on that repeatedly until you see that Developer Options has been enabled.
Go back to Settings. You will now see a new entry called Developer options. Tap on that.
Under Developer options you will see OEM Unlock. Switch that to On.
And you are done! Just that easy!

What version android are you on, btw the user previous is correct, once you use OEM unlock all you need to do is flash cf-autoroot, OEM unlock make sure that after rooting the phone does not trip frp and just lock you out of your device.

FRP is factory reset protection, if you don't allow OEM unlock when after you have carried out root and try to log into phone again you won't be able to do so, it's a security feature, frp is very tricky and it's important you make sure you have OEM unlock enabled before trying to do anything. You can use a software called heimdall which is similar to Odin and can be downloaded for mac. Yeah samsung always rolls out updates for international before anything else, just how they work. Before doing anything I highly advise you to visit the g920t forums, you will get more info there than you will here on the international forum. I hope you manage to get things done

Thanks for pointing that out. I don't know why I expect people to be grateful on XDA, just because someone tries to help them.
Using a Mac, you flash files using Heimdall: http://glassechidna.com.au/heimdall/
Ok so I think I'm good to go:
I attached some screenshots checking if everything is correct. Also, is http://glassechidna.com.au/heimdall/ the correct and official site to get Heimdall? And my device's build is G920TUES5DQD1 which was released a few days ago, and I'm not sure if the CF auto root file was based on an earlier update. Will I still be able to use it?
is g920v bootloader unlockable?
is it possible to downgrade thanks to this oem unlock?

As far as I know, and what has been the fact since the release of the 920V, there's has been no known case where the bootloader has been unlocked. Due to Verizon's restrictions, the S6 is hardlocked. The only way that it might ever be unlocked is if someone reverse engineers the bootloader software, creating an unlocked version that can be flashed, and that will still pass the phone's security checks. I wouldn't hold your breath for it though, because it's been 3 years and no solution yet.
i had same issues

Most Samsung phones are unlocked, Only a small percentage of Samsung phones has locked bootloaders. Just pop a different carrier SIM and make sure it works, If different sims work then your device has an unlocked bootloader.

That is incorrect, what you are referring to is carrier locked. and is done to most phones sold in the US. Most can be unlocked once fully paid for and after 90 days of service.
Bootloader lock has nothing to do with sim cards at ALL!! It does have everything to do with being able to install other roms and firmware via non official sources.

EDIT: Problem solved. I just had to wait a few days to get the switch available. It seems it's a "security feature"...
Hello, guys.
I recently bought a Moto One, already with the bootloader unlocking in mind. I live in Brazil, and here phones are required to be unlockable. But here's the thing: this one has the "OEM unlock" option grayed out. I already did a Factory Reset multiple times, following different ways to do it, and nothing worked.
It says I need to connect to internet (which I obviously already did) or contact my mobile operator. But it's a retail device, so they have nothing to do with it.
Does someone have the same problem or am I the only lucky one?

I've seen another Brazilian guy over in our telegram group having the same problem. I don't know more about it tho.
Boot to fastboot and do:
Code:
fastboot getvar cid
Here you'll see which cid's can be unlocked or not. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/MOTOROLA-Android-Developer/Bootloader-Unlock-Problems/td-p/3222809
If your cid returns a value that is supposed to be unlockable then you should report the bug in that motorola community.

Thank you for your answer. My cid is eligible for unlocking. I even got the Unique Key to unlock it already. I suppose I'll have to report the bug to Motorola.
I've read somewhere that this is supposed to be a new security thing (not sure if it's from manufacturer or from the OS): in order to activate the Unlock switch, user is supposed to wait a minimum time period: something close to 7 days of uptime.
It's funny, though, Motorola's site doesn't mention this restrain at all.

That is interesting... and it's true. After 4 days the switch is finally available. Thanks for the info!

Hi guys, how y'all doing?
I've been trying to unlock the bootloader of my phone a couple of months now and every single attempt is a failure. I've done all the steps right but, in the Motorola website I receive a message that my phone don't apply for unlocking the bootloader.
Anyone knows anything about this, if it can be bypassed somehow or if has anyway to contact Motorola to get any information about this issue.
Thanks in advance.

Well, I can think of a few reasons why you can't unlock your bootloader.
1. The most obvious one: you haven't enabled OEM unlocking under developer settings.
2. You're not using a retail device. Only retail devices can unlock BL AFAIK. Non-retail devices are those sold by carriers (AT&T, Verizon, whatever else).
3. Your bootloader is not unlockable, even if its retail.
The 1st problem is easy to solve and I won't discuss it.
The other two are stored as variables on your bootloader and can be checked with the "fastboot getvar [x]" command, where [x] is the variable name.
The variables of interest here are:
1. "ro.build.version.full" - this tells if device is retail or not. It should return something like "retail.en.US" or "retail.xx.XX", depends on region.
2. "cid" - I have no idea cid stands for, but I think it's related to bootloader type.
3. Be aware that I don't know if the 1st variable has the same name on all motorola devices. In case of doubt, use "fastboot getvar all" to list all variables, then you can check manually.
Nowadays, it's not common for Motorola devices to have locked cids. In Lollipop/Marshmallow days, some devices had that issue where it was retail but impossible to unlock due to cid. The un-unlockable cids should be the same for all devices but you'll have to research, I don't remember which is which anymore.
SUMMARY:
1. check the developer setting "Allow OEM unlocking". It's a switch. If it's off, turn it on and you'll be able to unlock the BL
2. If that doesn't work, check if your phone is a retail model. If not, you're out of luck.
3. If it is retail and you can't unlock it, you are either providing the wrong unlock code to fastboot, or you have an unlockable cid, in which case you're also out of luck.
[edit]
Forgot to mention this, if your device has a mediatek CPU/SoC, forget about it, they're impossible to unlock too.

Thanks for all the info.
1. I liked that you mentioned the "OEM Unlocking" switch, but I'm not a total dummy, it's turned on lol.
2. I don't believe that my model is one of those sold by carriers, at least afaik.
3. I will try to get the variables and look it up, but I'm feeling that I'm out of luck already.
It's the Qualcomm version of the One Fusion+

If it's the qualcomm version and it doesn't unlock it must be bc it must be either bc it is not retail or cid. If you're using a retail phone and cid is unlockable then keep trying/check unlock code/try asking for it again, whatever, it should work.
Currently, RSA does not support XT2311-3 for unknown reason. However, I found a ROM for Tracfone, but the boot works with unlocked version.
Download: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=10620683726822053015
MD5 60f8e629cbe7e969923c07538d6c3c7c
Bootloader unlock required. However, VPN disappeared after bootloader unlocked. You have to set up user account if you need VPN
Note: your phone is wiped during bootloader unlock process. Since RSA does not work with this phone at this time, you may not be able to rescue if something goes wrong.
Note: Titanium Backup does not work with Android 13. You need Swift Backup (pay $2.5 a year to use your choice of cloud service)
You should do it before initial setup. Wi-Fi connection and/or data connection needed for Magisk. Transfer the boot.img downloaded to your phone and patch it with Magisk, and transfer the patched boot back to host computer.
Now reboot the phone to bootloader or fastbootd
Code:
adb reboot fastboot
Flash patched boot
Code:
fastboot flash boot
Press space once, drag-and-drop the patched_boot onto command window, and press enter.
Post process:
Install the following as modules and you should install Fox's Magisk Module Manager
ADB fastboot
shamiko (you can setup Deny List but you don't have to enable because shamiko takes care of it)
Universal SafetyNet Fix 2.4.0
Systemless host within Magisk
liboemcrypo disabler is not required as it plays Netflix fine after these modules added, and it appears L1 on mine (good)
You can complete setup after root is done. Make sure you add Play Store and Play Services into Deny List as well as any app can detect root
How do you unlock the bootloader on this phone? When I copy & paste my device ID into the Motorola bootloader unlock page and click on "Can my device be unlocked" button, I get a message saying, "Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking".

Did you purchase your phone through Motorola directly?
I originally ordered a Moto G Stylus 5g (2023) from Amazon and tried several times to get the Motorola site to issue an unlock code. When I tried factory resetting this phone, I got a ROM not found error so I am returning this phone to Amazon. I then ordered a Moto G Power 5G (2023) directly from Motorola. My first attempt at getting an unlock code failed but I kept trying and finally was able to get through the process and now have the unlock code (sent via email).
When I tried to use fastboot to unlock the bootloader, I received this message "Check 'Allow OEM Unlock' in Android Settings > Developer Options". I have factory reset the Moto G Power 5g (2023) and am hoping the OEM Unlock option will be enabled soon. (If anyone has any 'tricks' on getting this Developer option enabled, please chime in)
If it helps, I used instructions from here: https://www.hardreset.info/devices/.../bootloader-moto-unlock-lenovo-motorola-root/
(They have a download for MFASTBOOT, which I did use but I am thinking the old FASTBOOT would work as well)

I got mine from Best Buy
Now there's a workaround for missing VPN
Get App Ops from Play Store and add sui (zygisk) module on Magisk
Check the list on App Ops and allow VPN on app needed
Moreover, Netflix works after USNF @Displax mod added, added Play Store and Play Services in Deny List, and Shamiko module added.
Mine shows L1 and Netflix (and cable TV app) work

I bought mine at Best Buy, but that shouldn't make any difference. It's the unlocked version for use on any carrier, so it should be bootloader unlockable.
I enabled Developer Options, but I noticed that "OEM Unlocking" is grayed out. When trying to Google this and find out why, I came upon a Lenovo forum where people were asking the exact same thing, and Lenovo's response was that the phone needs an Internet or Wi-Fi connection for 7 days before the "OEM Unlocking" option will become available(?!).
Now, I'm wondering if that's what's going on here, and why I'm getting the message that my phone isn't eligible for bootloader unlocking. I guess I'll see in a few days, LOL!

I know this is weird.
Mine takes 7 days and it's on internet/SIM active
Back then my situation was more difficult because even RSA was not ready for the phone (it says not supported). I needed boot.img for rooting
I think I'm on day 2 of waiting... It's only on WiFi as I need the SIM for my old phone. Kind of frustrating that it's not a more immediate result/change.
Yesterday was 7 days from when I bought my Moto G Power 5G, and I checked it this morning - lo and behold, OEM Unlocking is available!
I don't understand the reasoning/desire behind Lenovo's wanting to impose this 7 day waiting period, but it is what it is. Time to {hopefully!} go unlock my bootloader.

What a pain in the a$$!! I had to keep trying over and over before it would work. It worked the first or second time (gave me the option to get an unlock code), but I forgot to put it in bootloader mode, so I got an error. Then, I had to try multiple times before it would give me another chance to get the unlock code (kept telling me my device wasn't eligible for unlock). Finally got it unlocked, and then rooted!
