Have you been able to root it since its been unlocked?
As long as you own the device outright (as in not financed either by Samsung or T-Mobile), then you can unlock it yourself. Just go to Settings -> Connections -> More connection settings -> Network Lock. On that page you can see the current status and request a permanent unlock. If you are paid off, the device should unlock within 24 hours.

Hello. I was going to pull the trigger and get an ATT S3 in the US, though I'm travelling to Egypt in month or so, staying there for a couple of months.
Is unlocking guaranteed? And for which model? Obviously I won't be using ATT's SIM, so am I still required to pay for the mobile plan? Will my phone get blocked or just the SIM?

You can get your AT&T phone unlocked by AT&T for paying some price and then you wont have to unlock it to run other SIMs other than AT&T. These companies are sometimes hesitant to provide the unlock but you can always buy a international GT-i9300 Galaxy S 3 that comes factory unlocked with no pay plan.
Hit Thanks Button if it helped.

Just Unlock it using Galaxy Sim Unlock(ava as free on XDa) or use this http://blog.gsmarena.com/in-phone-hack-can-unlock-samsung-galaxy-s-iii-and-note-2-phones-for-free/
Note that this method may not work for all Galaxy S III or Note II variants. Also keep in mind that this could void your warranty, so proceed at your own risk. Here are the steps you need to take:
1) Insert the desired SIM card you want to use unlocked into your device, and restart the phone.
2) Enter the code *#197328640# into the keypad and press send.
3) Go to Main Menu -> [1] UMTS -> [1] Debug Screen -> [8] Phone Control -> [6] Network Lock -> Options [3] Perso SHA256 OFF (after choosing this option, wait for at least 30 seconds)
4) Go back one step by pressing the Menu button, select back, which should bring you to [6] Network Lock, then choose [4] NW Lock NV Data INITIALLIZ.
If you followed the above steps correctly, your device should now work with the new SIM card!
Let us know if the above method worked for you, and on what device.

Eh, but the extra cash I pay is the actual unlocked phone price right? Can't really afford it right now and might just get a cheaper unlocked phone..

You mean just paying the first month+activation+phone price, and delay my monthly payments (my stay can extend up to a year)? Am I not getting an IMEI ban or something for that? And how will an IMEI ban affect my phone usage abroad?

IMHO, they can't or usually don't impose a IMEI ban. Just try any of methods. You can also change IMEI

Hey guys, pretty newbie question for ya'll, but how do I unlock it to work on AT&T? Is it as simple as following these steps?
3. once you receive the unlock code turn on your phone and from the dialer type 2945#*769#
4. the moment you press the last # you should be getting a hidden menu for unlocking the phone.
5. press on Network lock and keyin the NCK code provided
And I buy the code on like ebay for $2?
Just want to make sure I'm doing this correctly when I receive the phone.
Thank you so much.

Don't know how fast you need to unlock the phone, but my phone came unlocked out of the box from Tmobile. If you provide Tmo with the IMEI they will happy email you the code, they took 24 hours for me...only to discover the phone wasn't locked. best
Oh so I should just try the at&t sim first when the phone arrives and see if it works? If not, are those the steps above that will work once I have a code?

Is it easy for them to find out? If I was to potentially nlock the phone with an ebay code, and just plug in my AT&T chip, would anyone know?
These P769 phones are already unlocked, aren't they? I was pretty sure they were.

Tmobile p769 usa versions at least are not carrier unlocked.
Call T-Mobile. They WILL give you the code. Granted that's if the phone has been paid in full. (And you can save your $2)
Also, there is already legislation in place to remove the limitations of phone unlocking. It's moving along pretty quickly too. I'd say within the next year or two, it won't matter. However, if you are under contract, it's at the discretion of the provider.
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/make-unlocking-cell-phones-legal/1g9KhZG7
The White House agrees with the 114,000+ of you who believe that consumers should be able to unlock their cell phones without risking criminal or other penalties. In fact, we believe the same principle should also apply to tablets, which are increasingly similar to smart phones. And if you have paid for your mobile device, and aren't bound by a service agreement or other obligation, you should be able to use it on another network. It's common sense, crucial for protecting consumer choice, and important for ensuring we continue to have the vibrant, competitive wireless market that delivers innovative products and solid service to meet consumers' needs.

Does anyone have any confirmed success SIM unlocking the Xperia Ray st18i ?
I've found a couple of sites that claim to be able to do it using a mixture of connecting pins with tweezers and paying for unlock software, but don't really want to pay unless I know it is 100% genuine
Or if anyone knows of a free way to SIM Unlock the st18i, that would be appreciated
Cheers

Yea thanks, they gave an unlock code which didn't work, then eventually admitted they couldn't unlock it and refunded £20 credit as an apology
Unlock shops have been unable to unlock it too
Everything I have read says you need to connect 2 contacts near the battery before plugging in USB and using software to unlock it, which explains why the carriers code didn't work
Why can't u check bootloader unlock status because of it does allowed then you can flash custom kernel and Rom which then unlock SIM lock.
Here is the instruction to check
First, you should confirm that it is
possible to unlock the boot loader of
your device by checking the service
menu. In your device, open the dialler
and enter *#*#7378423#*#* to
access the service menu. If you have
a tablet, click here to learn how
access the service menu.
2. In your device, tap Service info >
Configuration > Rooting Status . If
Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes,
then you can continue with the next
step. If it says No , or if the status is
missing, your device cannot be
unlocked.

No I guess that's not right. Sim lock and bootloader lock has nothing in common, only if the carrier locks the bootloader and makes it impossible to unlock. So I guess unlocking the bootloader won't unlock your Sim lock, but I'm not sure
Btw is your bootloader even unlockable?

Im not sure yet, I'm doing this over email with my family, the phone is going to be my Nephews birthday present if we can SIM unlock it, he's locked into a contract with a different provider and stuck with a crappy phone, so the plan was to unlock this one for him to swap over to while keeping the contract SIM

I was able to Bootloader and Sim Unlock Xperia Ray ST18a(i) but it cost me $10 to do it. The Carrier could not do it. I used FastGSM. I don't know exactly HOW this process works but it does work. It involved connecting Test points which I believe temporarily open a way to insert a SIM Unlock certificate which may not be genuine due to the fact that when your carrier buys the phone from Sony or another manufacturer, they are factory locked in other words, the network lock is inserted into a secure partition. I believe the test points open up this secure partition for inserting another Certificate through the s1tool. FastGSM uses a program which when you log in, checks to see if you have credits, and once that stage passes, it downloads and inserts this certificate into the secure partition. It also unlocks the bootloader in this process allowing you to get Fastboot mode. This is what I believe, not sure if it is actually the case. However, I wasn't just merely satisfied that my Bootloader and SIM are both Unlocked. I prefer a technical explanation of what this process does and HOW it works. Ofcourse, the unlocking source are not going to tell me how they did it. But I believe they got their hands on the certificate that gets inserted once the EEPROM is temporarily unsecured using test points. I firmly believe SIM Unlocking should be free and should be available to anyone who wants to go at it. I believe the Warranty and other excuses they give such as warnings about security etc are redundant and pointless. If you look around, just the process of Rooting is daunting enough for most 95 percent of the population, so I don't think people would go around unlocking their phones even if the information was made available. Most people wouldn't even know about it.
Next time, purchase a phone that can be easily unlocked, Do some research. Although the $10 I spent unlocking is not a big deal, I personally do not ever want to pay a single dime to network unlock a device that I already own. Here we have to pay $50 to the carrier to unlock it. I would rather help people by giving them information on how to do it for free. Then they can go void their warranty if they wish. People who care about warranties are not going to bother with any of this, which begs the question, why are SIM Unlocks such a tightly guarded secret, and what can we as a community do to thwart the efforts of these Carriers to keep us locked in such a way that the device we own is deemed useless if its not on their Air.

Note for clarity: carrier level unlocking does NOT affect rooting the phone (other than making it a pita to update).

I used DC Unlocker to get NCK code to unlock when putting a Sim in. The instructions were a little confusing for me but all you need is the NCK code.
From slickdeals:
This phone can be unlocked for $5 via dc-unlocker. This is a true unlock as the software actually reads the unlock code from the phone itself (which is pretty impressive).
If anyone wants to try this go https://www.dc-unlocker.com/buy and make a account, deposit 4 euros = 4 credits. Download Hisuit on your pc which will download all the drivers. Plug in your phone, on your phone in the dialer type *#*#2846579#*#* and go into Background settings/USB port settings and switch it to Manufacture Mode.
Back on the computer, Download the DC-Unlocker and open it and set it to "Huawei Phones". Click auto detect and it will show your phone information. Login to your account and click "Read Unlock codes". It will display all the unlock codes for your device instantly(it reads them off your device). The NCK is the network unlock code you are looking for.
**Follow instructions here:
https://www.dc-unlocker.com/huawei-id-unlock
I will read through the threads here for rooting and roms. I would like to get rid of the AT&T bloatware.

i just got off the phone with my carrier and they told me i need to meet 3 requirements:
1. have my phone paid off
2. have 40 days of service
3. have current service
So i got this phone under a promotion where I only pay $100 but its over the course of 24months combined with my monthly service billing. I asked if i could just pay it off now but they have this complicated credit system where, well i won't get into it. point is i can't unlock it right now. But she did say I can call back in 3 months after 3 billing cycles and the credit issue should be fixed and 40 days would have passed and they can unlock it then.
I just activated the phone yesterday and I wanted to root it before personalizing it so i wont have to start over later. Also I need to install PDAnet to hide my tethering so i can use unlimited wifi on my PC. as far as im aware PDAnet doesnt require a root tho right?

They're most likely talking about network unlocking and not actually bootloader unlocking.
BL unlocking is not something a carrier can do freely, it's more of a Samsung decision rather than a carrier decision.
