Hey guys,
I'll be traveling next month and need a robust and good camera to click great pictures. It should be stable and should click good pictures with all sorts of focus and everything.
I am currently of RR Rom and the camera is unstable which is the case with almost all Android N ROMs.
So I am wondering whether to switch to lower CM version or flash back to MIUI for the camera to be top notch working.
Thanks in advance
Try latest nitrogen os testing build
It has face beauty, ubi focus (like google lence blur but in new way), chroma flash and many more features

Hey thanks for your response.
How stable is the camera?
It should not give any force closes or can't connect to the camera issues
well, for me one 20170412 rr nougat build the camera is stable but the camera app (believe its snapcamera or snapdragon camera what ever) is awful. highspeed video footage with 60fps does not work in dark conditions. if a working camera with good interface is a must.. i would take xiaomi.eu rom for this reason.

I'll check the rom out.
If not satisfied then will switch to extreme bloated xiaomi rom
Hey guys, recently my father got tired of ****ty MIUI and wanted something better for his Mi 5. Since it's not my phone, I cannot test various ROMs and kernels by clean flashing them.
I just need one ROM that I can switch to on his phone from MIUI.
It needs to be 100% stable (he is sick of bugs), needs to have great calling and bluetooth connection, and great battery life.
Please let me know if such ROM exists for Mi 5, and which one is it
(Do you guys face any issues with bluetooth speakers or taking calls via bluetooth in car?)
You can start with jdcteam's aosp. Has been really solid for me.

I've been using LineageOS with 0 problems so far. But it does take some time to set it up that way. For instance, you need to flash the MIUI camera to improve camera performance, and under display calibration adjust the RGB values to 90% to prevent image retention (a problem on MIUI too).
I can confirm that Bluetooth works fine, calling is clear and battery life is good but not better/worse than MIUI. I haven't tried taking calls over a car's Bluetooth.
You should also check out the Xiaomi.eu weekly MIUI 9 builds as they usually fix what Xiaomi broke in their MIUI builds and are actually supported by Xiaomi.

Thank you for the recommendations guys. Are you using the stock kernel or any custom kernel like BB kernel, Nagatobimaru etc?
What is your opinion about AOSPA and RR ?
AOSP Extended all the way. Using it from past 3 months.

Nagatobimaru kernel has terrible battery life for me (like 1h30m SOT even though I was initially excited to try it out because it incorporates EAS). I use LOS stock freq kernel, which removes the underclock of the 32GB Mi5 from 1.8GHz to 2.15GHz but is otherwise just the stock LOS kernel. On this kernel I get between 3-4h30m SOT.
AFAIK LOS is the only ROM with display calibration and all the others have no way to fix the severe image retention which is my main reason for sticking with it. If it doesn't bother you or affect your unit then I can highly recommend AEX which seems to be the ROM 90% of the devs are on.

What do you mean by the image retention issue? And what have you calibrated? As far as I understand, you have just tweaked the RGB values of the screen. Can you tell me your values? I think the same thing can be done via Kernel Adiutor if you are on a kernel that supports KCAL. AFAIK, stock LOS kernel doesn't have it but most ROMs and all custom kernels have it.
What about AOSP by JDC team, it appears very stable with EAS?

Does this problem have anything in common to the top edge of phone bleeding? Isnt that hardware's fault?

Yes, it's the same problem - I am unaware whether this is a software or hardware problem, but you can correct it 100% with software. It looks like lightbleed right around the border of the phone and you can see ghosting of previus apps around the corners (especially on a grey background). It's easy to fix in LineageOS, but I've had trouble in every other ROM I tried so far.

Its not ghosting its more like a radiant, something like a glow that increase and decrase...

It looks light an orange tinted lightbleed right around the borders of the display and some ghosting of previous apps are overlayed on the current app (especially visible on grey backgrounds). Check the attached image to see what mean, and this is only about 50% of how bad it can get if you don't adjust for it.
Yes I just tweaked the RGB values to 90% (anything more and you can still notice the effect).
I tried using Kernel Adiutor to fix this problem to no avail, using different ROM and kernel combinations. I never checked if the kernel supports KCAL specifically though.
It's been too long since I used JDC's ROM, but if I remember correctly it was stable and fast but lacked essential features at the time (music playback controls, lockscreen torch, display calibration settings). Their Oreo ROM is far ahead of Lineage 15 in in terms of stability though, not that it's DD ready.

Woah thanks for sharing this man, I didn't know about this, can you please share the screenshot of the settings you have made?
I have the same issue and I can't decide which ROM to flash. MIUI 8 is too laggy, MIUI 9 is faster but all apps crash randomly. I will unlock my phone tomorrow (after the stupid 72 hours waiting period) and I am hoping that this discussion will help us decide. Most probably it will be a choice between Xiaomi.eu or LOS.

As someone who recently used both Xiaomi.eu and LOS14.1 I might be able to clear that up.
Xiaomi.eu MIUI9 build is almost identical to MIUI 8. There are a few minor tweaks to the UI such as the task switcher which is now more immersive and the new icon pack. Settings are now more bundled together and ROM/System info is graphically displayed. Split screen multitasking seems to be the only new feature. I haven't experienced a single app crash, but the system animation speed was set way to fast by default and transition animations show tearing each time you switch apps. In short, it's fast but not smooth.
I switched back to LOS quite quickly. The only feature MIUI has that LOS doesn't is Dual Apps, and since I don't use that the choice was very simple. LOS is much smoother and faster, with minimal features on top of AOSP. I enjoy the additions, it doesn't feel bloated or barebones.
If you are going to use LOS, I recommend doing the following:
-If you have a 32GB Mi5, flash the LOS stock freq kernel
-Set the display calibration as per my previous posts
-Activate touch home button, always on fingerprint unlock
-Install Magisk
-Flash MIUI camera Magisk module + OISprop-Magisk
-Flash iYTBP Magisk module
-Flash unified hosts Adblock Magisk module (make sure to select systemless hosts in Magisk settings)
-Install Google camera HDR+
-Use Nova (paid) or Lawnchair (free) as the launcher
That should get you going and solve most if not all annoyances coming from MIUI. You'd be amazed with the quality of Google Camera HDR+! Just check the attached samples (they are all compressed due to Xda but you'll get the point).

Wow! that was very informative. Thanks a lot man :good: . And yes, I get the point about the photo samples are amazing.
I have the 32 GB version and I already purchased Nova Launcher and use no matter what. I will have to find the addons you mentioned as I have no idea what they do. It's the first time I install a custom ROM on my MI 5. One final question, do you have any thoughts on AOSP Extended?

I can add all the files you need to a dropbox folder and share the link if that would be easier? I find that the Mi5 is super easy to modify, you shouldn't worry too much. I'll add the firmware you need and GAPPS if that would help you transition.
Yes, AEX is a great ROM with many features. Most Devs seem to be on it (going by their discussions). I haven't found a way to fix my LCD issues on AEX yet, which is the main reason for not using it currently.

You need to run the apk after you flashed the magisk module and rebooted your phone to calibrate the OIS.
Wanted to share with you some experience with the very nice phone from Xiaomi, and my first impressions are:
- Very nice look, excellent finish.
- Nice value and really high performance.
- Speedy unlock - either fingerprint or face - do not need to touch anything to get the phone unlocked via face recognition, however to enable face unlock I had to change the region of the phone to get it in options.
- very decent battery
But...
- Google assistant does not support "OK Goggle unlock" and voice control (seems not to work with all MIUI phones?)
- Widevine L3 - so NO HD Netflix or Amazon video
- Wide notch - is this the problem - anyway no notifications on top of display - so I have to pull down on top to see what is going on..?
- AMOLED display vastly inferior to Galaxy display - very washed out videos in direct compare
- Till now it seems for me impossible to implement the ported stock dialers (phone) to get the look and feel of stock Android.
- Camera disappointed me - cannot understand the DxoMark rating of 99 ??? In direct comparison with my Galaxy S8, very poor in low light, and despite OIS very shaky videos - Xiaomi desperately need EIS implementation.
- It was very tricky to implement multilingual setup, some bugs in MIUI perhaps.
- I have Xiaomi BT headset, but the sound paired with MI8 on this unit is too low. Also the call volume is a little to soft, wished the earpiece would be louder.
So, as I've stated much more negative comments, seems as not satisfied with the phone, what is not true, but these observations are really there and making some problems in real life.
And after a lot of playing I still do not know how to change the default icon look on the phone (needed for ported pixel launcher), since when applying different themes only the MIUI launcher displays new icons.
Any comments from other users?

Just a summary from another Mi8 owner:
- Google assistant does not support "OK Goggle unlock" and voice control (seems not to work with all MIUI phones?)
you complain about "ok google" doesn't work on a Chinese smartphone? Really?
- Widevine L3 - so NO HD Netflix or Amazon video
Widevine L3 was never supported on a xiaomi smartphone, nor a Mi6 nor a Mi5s. Why should a chinese phone support DRM from Netflix or amazon?
- Wide notch - is this the problem - anyway no notifications on top of display - so I have to pull down on top to see what is going on..?
did you buy the device without having seen it? Notch was known ....
- AMOLED display vastly inferior to Galaxy display - very washed out videos in direct compare
In my opinion, I love the display, it hasn't an exaggerated saturation as Samsung and its lot better than a Oneplus5T Display.
- Till now it seems for me impossible to implement the ported stock dialers (phone) to get the look and feel of stock Android.
There is no Guarantee to install google phone on every smartphone. Just for me, i've installed xiaomi.eu rom and can install the google phone dialer offically from google play store without limitations.
- Camera disappointed me - cannot understand the DxoMark rating of 99 ??? In direct comparison with my Galaxy S8, very poor in low light, and despite OIS very shaky videos - Xiaomi desperately need EIS implementation.
Can't really understand this point, i've compared this cam round about two weeks with a Huawei P20 Pro and JUST FOR ME: the Mi8 cam is better, the AI on the Huawei device is horrible and in low light situations i can't see no advantages too. Maybe the P20 pro is better in some conditions BUT compared with the price the MI8 is more better !
Here is my comparison of P20 Pro and Mi8, everything on AUTO and just Point and shoot:

Xiaomi MI A2 is a really good example why "Ok Google" works, it doesn't run Xiaomis Miui. It runs Android One, its a stock android fork and it would be a misstake when "Okay Google" wont work here....
Try the camera with xiaomi.eu MIUI 10 Stable. MIUI Global for Mi 8 is a big joke with a lot of problems and missing features. The DXO review was made with the Chaina ROM, that is why it shoots good/great.
I'm a happy Mi 8 user with the latest stable xiaomi.eu. After 1 month of using it: Mi 8 is not the best phone, but for this price, it's unbeatable right now and probably in the near future among the flagships.
Best regards!
After 3 months with Mi8
Summarized - A great phone!
- Screen is very good balanced - normal colors, nice.
- Battery durability is much better then expected, keeping it charged for 45 minutes a day.
- very snappy. Quick to browse.
- WiFi has very good reception.
- camera is excellent, but telephoto not very usable in lower light conditions (due to lack of OIS)
Never had any problem with this phone, which is - from my experience - very rare in praxis.
Hope to get Pie and camera update soon.
I hab similar experience with miui 10 global. Can't wait to unlock :|
Camera ist not good. Many bugs like Bluetooth disconnecting and big standby battery drain. App crashes. Always on display not working.
I also don't get why they don't display notification icons, it's so easy to do.
What I really like are the full screen gestures but that's about it lol

1. Google Assistant isn't working for a ton of phones, Samsung ones included. It's a GA bug.
2. No idea why they didn't certify L1...which is FREE!
3. The display is great, the only problem is with the older ROM, HDR isn't enabled yet so HDR videos look absolutely crap. Android Pie update has fixed this somewhat.
4. The Mi 8 has both OIS and EIS, and videos are very stable from my tests.
The other points aren't relevant to me so I hope they fix it for you.

2. - yeah no change possible
3. Huge difference after last update, HDR videos look gorgeous!

This is a much better phone now!

There's an issue with HDR if you have not noticed with the update. If you watch HDR videos during night time, the whole system turns a yellow tinge (Night/Reading mode OFF). When you quit the video, the system UI turns back to white. I've tested this, and the system returns itself to normal at 7.14am (I don't know why lol). It's as if HDR somehow forces Reading Mode on during night time, even if you have it turned off.
Global miui 10 8.12.20 beta,
No issues with ok Google (no unlock though)
Camera is excellent
Notch is too wide
Ported stock apps work (Google dialer, Google camera with night sight)
Got 300,737 in antutu, basically rivalling a Kirin 980 (ok I was outside in 4C temperature running it)
As for MIUI, previously owning an honor 9, I got rid of EMUI as soon as possible , I actually don't mind MIUI 10, it's not very intrusive, and is fairly minimalist, paired with ruthless launcher and a pixel icon pack, I might actually keep MIUI after I unlock the bootloader

for the pixel launcher, just download the modded APK from ApkMirror, this is the latest version, should work fine https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/papho...tless-pixel-2-launcher-mod-9-4889482-release/ Although, to be fair, i much prefer ruthless launcher, as it offers a few more features over the stock pixel launcher, unfortunately, you do need to install the pixel bridge fro assistant to work though.
I'd check the cameras, but my screen decided that working was not in its job description, so (luckily) i am getting a replacement device from amazon (still within returns window), should be with me tomorrow, so i'll test, but as far as i can tell, from taking a few pictures before it died, the stock camera seems very good, especially in the dark, i took a few pictures in an almost completely black room, upped the exposure, and got some rather nice (abeit a bit blurry, because i cant hold a phone still for 4 seconds it seems) images. This was on global beta 8.12.20, so may not be the same as stable 10.1.2.
I will say though, that the secondary lens, switched to using it independently (there's a setting for telephoto somewhere in the camera app), isn't very good in low light, and doesn't have brilliant saturation, but i think its a software thing, need to wait until there are a few 3rd part camera apps that can use both cameras, given pie offers an API to do that now.

Cannot find a ported Pixel 3 Launcher which would work on my MI8.
Using the rootless launcher, but missing the assistant button on search bar...
Do you have a link to a working port?

try ruthless launcher https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/com.ruthless.nexuslauncher
you need to download rootless pixel bridge from github too
if you want a stock pixel launcher, just try an earlier version of the one on APKmirror, just scroll down until you get to the list of versions
Seems you have not understood me...
I am using thee rootless launcher from the first date and it works very good, but I'm missing the Assistand button on the search bar...

ah, ok, have you actually got google assistant enabled, you actually need to open the assistant app at least once and set it up for it to work properly, or do you mean that the button isn't there in the search bar, because if so, that's a bit odd since it worked fine for me, to be fair, i'd just say switch over to ruthless launcher, i personally think its a bit better (although i do miss the 'right click' menu on long press of background), since the assistant button is built into the launcher, i cant see any reason why it shouldn't be there, possibly its an OS issue, i was on global beta 10.12.20, if you are on the chinese ROM it might not work, not without google services installed properly at least.

everything works about assistant (voice or button activated), I'm on global ROM. Just there is no specific assitant button on the right side of the search bar. I'm on MIUI 10.1.2.0 stable.
If there would be an specific assistant button I'd be able to switch to gesture control.

I have found one issue, with the phone app. When I try to call someone it doesn't show the call being forwarded,so you can't end the call. And When I am called I can't pick up since there is no prompt for accepting or rejecting call. A problem with the Google dialer maybe.

The battery is pretty terrible, it cant charge while playing, it was draining while charhing so fast, i ofc did a clean install, camera app fails a lot as well, and you cant set every live wallpaper from pixel wallpaper changer it force closes.. i hope in the future you can fix these the rom felt smooth until i started playing games and noticed it wasnt charging while playing..
Hi Dev.
I wiped my data and installed your rom. Everything was perfect. But the galaxy wearable app was force closing.
Could you please help me to solve this problem.

Wait what XD. Never experienced this bug. Maybe a charging cable issue? Also, there are two cameras included. GCam isn't as stable as stock by a long shot, so use stock if GCam crashes too much.
Also abt Gear Wearable. Since I extensively debloated this ROM, it is possible I removed something that I shouldn't have. Not to worry, I will release an update next month (Not now because of exams)

Im back on my old 9.0 rom and everything is working just fine, i dont know what the issue was here, but ill check the update when its ready thanks!
Please add Adapt Sound feature if possible in a future build.
Fast, smooth and stable rom. But it has really bad battery usage. The older one(teampixel oreo) vas great at battery usage.
Also i can't find the "Power saving mode". There is no toggle in notification bar and i cant find a way to enable it in settings menu. Anyyone know is it possible to use Power saving mode on this rom?

Hello! The reason battery life was significantly better on Oreo was due to Oreo having a fully working Phantom Kernel! At this point, I'm just waiting for an update to that kernel, so that I can incorporate it, into the ROM, along with adapt sound, Dual Messenger, Gear 360 bug fix and Screen Write (Samsung Capture) since that it the only "useful" Note Feature that can't just be simply added back. I'll also be incorporating a few tweaks here and there to improve performance where possible! Keep an eye out for V1.1

I'm totally speechless, today i swapped my S20 + for a OP8P, and TBH the camera is better but they where close.
I spent quite a bit of time, and as an avid GCAM user i tried MANY GCAM ports, all where pretty much crap, or not really better than stock, but, BUT! THAN, i found Parrot043 mod. I installed made my usual tweaks, and what i have saw is literally INSANE, this camera mod, literally destroy everything i have ever tried, and believe me i tried hundreds of them in my life.
1. If you have a previous GCAM, open the camera, hold and press on the icon on the homescreen, press app info, clear cache, and data.
2. Uninstall the app, reboot the phone. Than install Parrot 043 link > https://gofile.io/d/BpCWFx - also alternative host - https://easyupload.io/k6t42a
3. Go into the settings of the GCAM, turn on HDR enhanced, into advanced section, into HDR frames, and set 35, enable sabre, just under the HDR enhanced frames option.
4. Restart the camera app, go into darkness, take a photo with your camera app, and than take a photo with the GCAM mod, BE AMAZED.
P.S. Do not touch anything else, maybe turn on H265 for videos, and 4K for the back camera, increase video bitrate to 50mbps + and that's it.
P.P.S. ALWAYS make sure you have HDR enhanced on! it makes taking moving objects harder/blurry, but for low light its EPIC.

OnePlus 8 Pro IN2025 10.5.8 xXx rom currently.
Had gcam installed from xXx, force stopped, cleared data, uninstalled with reflashing rom to remove as system app, then rebooted. Installed the other. Tried clearing data, rebooting again, made the one you recommended a system priv app, but it keeps crashing the moment I open it. I can't even open settings, because it crashes on open.
I have tried modifying the permissions, tried a previous version, still crashes on start. At the time, no other gcam folder.

Its the sabre i think, you need to somehow turn it off, sometimes older GCAM ports mix with new and bugs happen, its either that, or its the sabre. In order to fix this, IF IT IS THE SABRE, you will need to wipe cache data from recovery or even FORMAT the phone, look at the photos, the upgrade is ENORMOUS, but it depends of how much you need it, i would suggest for someone with the same version as your model/firmware, test the mod to see if its the sabre or not, i had this issue on my Mi Note 10, all GCAM ports looked the same, no improvements, i tried everything only the format make the settings change post installation.
EDIT, it might be even the rom! i just saw you are on custom, sorry buddy.
Always keen to give GCAM a go (not sure why i have such a soft spot for it lol)...
Anyways, thanks for sharing this. Attached are a few samples of me jumping into a store room with the door slightly opened (it's pretty dim inside).

Urnyx is also great and stable, but sadly it lacks exposure in low light, (darker photos) and the noise reduction can kill details. Parrot can see where eyes cannot, very good.
OP camera is better in low light than this, and you can't use any of the other cameras, so until they solve that problem for the OP 8 pro I'll be sticking to the stock camera.
You lose more functionality than you gain in picture quality.

And yes you lose ability of other cameras.
But for the moment this gcam is my friend in making low light pictures ?????

mhhh i actually tried different google gcams but until now - and since the last update - the stock cam is the best one for me, just in case with a lot of ( direct sun)light (google gcam often blows the sky just into white) and also in dark environments the stock cam is better than the gcam. But i think, gcams and stock cam could be better with updates over time, the software for the sensor has a much higher optimization potential.

This GCAM is different. Havent tested it alot in daylight, but it should win even in daylight. No the stock camera is not even close to being better or equal to GCAM, you can see in the picture, or test by yourself.

No need for XML.
Sabre is a better HDR merge metod, it should offers better details especially in low light. Should be in every situation, test it, you got nothing to lose.

What do you mean better than this, are you claiming that i did something wrong with the stock pictures?
And this camera mod is mostly for low light/night mode, you don't need to use it solo and not having the option to use other cameras, you can use both, you use GCAM for low light, and other cameras as needed.
Try it with the settings suggested, and you will forget that the main camera exist in low light.

Why Do you hype this camera when a lot of people tell something different? I tried the mod already and as I said, the Stock cam is better (for me) also in lowlight. I tested it in a very dark room. Also for daylight shots Stock is a way better, just in the view of sharphness.
So, your hyped gcam mod isn't the mother of all cam apps...
Update: I tested again in another Environment and again, Stock is a lot better. Not sure what's wrong with your Stock cam. Are you running the latest Version? ??Seems there is anything wrong on your side. I for myself can't share your opinion.
