It seems like...we can all easily build ROMs....if you're in here, you're diggin in with dcd....
What we need is a list of OEMs that people can add into their ROMs.
For example...I found Arcsoft MMS: 4.2.8.1 OEM.
Go grab it here:
http://sudermatt.com/files/Optional_MMS_4281_10-29-07.zip
Simply unzip and drop it into the OEM folder....
Be aware...you'd better know your Carrier MMS Settings before attempting this one......

actually, if youre using it with my kitchen, the carrier packages should do the mms configuration for you. I've not tested 4.2.8.1 (i dont have vzw) but I was told it worked right off the bat.
It didn't for me....I had to dig around for a posting that gave the right settings.

Of course....with OEMizer....I can easily create an rgu file with the settings built into the OEM I make and Cook in!

I will work on this. 3.0 and 4.2 must use different keys.
is there a cab for this version?
Here are some of the OEMs I use in my personal build...
Here is my mortscript OEM.
This binds the voice dialing key to a mortscript of mine for toggling the cellular data connection. Holding button 5 will connect if disconnected, or will disconnect (and disable) if connected. Script is included.
I use it to shut off cellular data at home, which is the only way ive found to make activesync use wifi for connecting back to mail2web.
Hi, how do you build an OEM, to insert in a rom? I would like to add aim 2.0 and a few other files
DCD, is there a OEM for HTC Home that you used to include in your custom versions? The one that has the today-settings panel?
idenkilla,
Believe me...it's not drag and drop...you have to dig in and get your geek on.
OEMizer is an app (search for it) that seems to help the process. I haven't really used it yet to turn cabs or other folder apps (those that do not require installation), into cookable OEM folders. It looks like it will work. I hope to have some time this weekend (its raining all weekend in LA) to play with it.
I will put up some sort of tutorial when I get it figured out. At least covering the simple stuff I understand.
I'm no programmer. I dabble. My big brained friends say, things like, "you know just enough to really 'f' things up" "you code works...unintelligable...but it seems to work".
Go into one of the OEM folders in the kitchen. Find one that is pretty simple that you have a good idea what the app is about. Look at the Option.xml file. Open the rgu file in notepad.
In OEMizer, do something really simple, like owner information, and build the OEM....look at it....you'll see what's going on....
What I don't really get is, the folder apps....I will have to tinker

Hmm, I couldn't get 4.2 to work on mine even using the settings for the 6700. I wonder what is different for you as compared to mine?
I can't remember all the steps I took....but here goes
The mms app only had one connection listed.
In the Registery, it was listed under some directory.
I remember seeing the registery directory "test" having the verizon settings...I modded those to match what the post said.
I copied "test" into the same directory as the default one.
Then I had to change a registry entry to show 2 connection settings in the application
Then I changed another registry entry to indicate which was the default connection I wanted to use.
Then I added a registry entry for my phone number.
Then I think it started working....
I cooked another ROM last night, so I have to redo all this stuff...I'll walk thru the steps again and repost.
But THIS time....I'm going to put it all down and use OEMizer so I don't ever have to do it again.
I'm really starting to see a LOT of value in that application....
working on integrating all my favs as oems into dcd's but I still have a way to go i suppose... keep getting the registry building errors.... blah
registry build error means you have non-unicode text in a reg file you edited somewhere. Make sure to open and save the file that causes the error with microsoft word, and save as, text, unicode encoding... That should eliminate those errors. a lot of text editor say they are saving as unicode, but don't stick strictly to the standard.

Actually, there is an app out there which pretty much does make it drag and drop.
Search on this site for the phrase "packagecreator". It was originally written and posted in one of the other forums here (i think the last version was 5.4).
It will open a cab, and export it and all of it's keys into a neatly written OEM folder. It even has the ability to mass-rename files in an OEM to avoid name conflicts when cooking.
This little beauty has worked for me on well over 99% (I can't claim 100% because I'm sure there's something out there that didn't work) of the OEMs I've created.
I find the program to be almost as valauble as the kitchen itself.

dcd1182 Thanks for all the work on this I have question about the oems you posted. I just started to play with the kitchen and when I add the HTC_XButton2_0_30995 the BuildOS gives me this error.
The file 'temp\dump\testsearch.bmp' already exists.
After doing some research it looks like the file is in both the HTC_XButton and AdobeReader is it ok to just delete one of them and try to run the BuildOS again?
Thanks,

They are the same picture, it's fine to delete one, but this is a bug in buildos that should be fixed, it should prompt the user to keep existing, rename, or overwrite...

Package creator 5.4 works great, I've been using it for quite a while creating my OEM's. I use this combined with Mobile Registry Editor to extract stuff from the registry to put into the OEM so I don't have to keep setting stuff up every time I flash. For instance I have Slingplayer mobile in an OEM all configured and ready to go.

I've created on my desktop a shortcut to a project folder on my SD card. Can anyone recommend an app that will let me set up a password for that folder?
I'm not looking to encrypt all the data in the folder, I just want password-restricted access to it. I can't find anything suitable in The Market.
Thanks.
If it's not encrypted, then its not protected.
Really, seriously, utterly, there is no way at all that you can "protect" a folder on an SD card other than encrypting the contents. Other apps, will always be able to access it, and, equally, anyone could take the card out and stick it in a PC card reader.
I appreciate that, and that's fine! I'm not looking for total protection from access, either through SD card reading or via apps. I'm just looking for password-restricted access when accessed through the desktop shortcut.
SmartLock will let you lock your photos/videos, as well as apps and such but I don't think it does folders. The best you could probably do would be to hide the folders using SmartLock or a similar app along those lines.
Yes, I have discovered SmartLock, thanks. But I have to say I'm not a fan at all of the whole mentality with mobile phones that data is split into storage of photos, videos, "music", etc, in separate locations and treated separately.
The folder in question contains mp3, pdf, jpg, xls and doc files.
Hiding the folder would be completely against what I'm trying to do, which is to have a clearly visible, easily accessible desktop shortcut. I guess basically I'm looking for the Android equivalent of a zip file with password.

When you write desktop, do you mean homescreen or as a network shortcut on your PC? If the latter you can use the desktop's OS to protect the link.

Wouldn't the Android equivalent be a zip file with a password? ES File Explorer is free and supports password protected archives.
Sorry, terminology!
Yes, I mean the home screen on my Streak (or strictly speaking one of them!).
I already have and use ES File Explorer, that's how I created the Homescreen shortcut!
So if it turns out that what I'm looking for is already a feature of that program, then how's that for irony!
Glad you've found a solution that works for you, but... you do know that password protected zipfiles are encrypted,

Thank you, but regrettably I haven't.
When you zip a folder it of course creates a copy of that folder, zipped, which is not what I want at all. I'm amazed that what I do want doesn't seem to be readily available; in order to open a folder you have to enter a simple password, and then you're in the folder. Simple as that ...

Well, part of the reason that nobody makes such an app / feature, is that it is pretty much the equivalent of selling a security system for your house that consists of a door that doesn't lock, with a sign on it saying "no unauthorized entry". It really offers no actual protection at all.
That being said, what you're trying to achieve sounds more like you want to protect an app / shortcut on your launcher screen, rather than protecting the folder itself
Take a look at something like https://market.android.com/details?id=com.sp.protector.free&feature=search_result (I searched for password any app, if you want to see other options). It may let you achieve what you're after.
Thanks for your thoughts. To use your analogy, yes; I do indeed want the sign that says "no unauthorized entry" but I don't want the door to be locked. Precisely!
Perhaps I should explain my situation more closely. I'm taking my Streak in to meetings with colleagues who will also make use of it. All I want is to prevent casual non-malicious access of the folder by other people. I neither need nor want encryption or strong security, I just want that tiny bit of difficulty, the little hint that says "you're not supposed to be doing this".
Thanks for your thoughts.
Using your own analogy; yes, that's exactly what I do want; the sign says, "no unauthorized entry", but the door remains unlocked!
Let me explain. I take my Streak in to meetings where it is also used by other people. What I want to prevent is non-malicious, accidental access by others. I want a gentle hint, not a 100% secure lock-out or data encryption, just a little kick that says "you're not supposed to be doing this".
Smart App Protector would be ideal if it would protect a folder. It's exactly what I want, but I need it for for folders, not apps.
You said that you wanted the prompt to come up when you hit an icon on your desktop - that would be app-protection, or shortcut protection, since it is the launch of the app / shortcut that causes the password prompt.
If you are saying that you are already in a file browser, and you want the prompt to pop up when you choose a certain folder to enter, then you are going to need to find a file browser that supports protecting or "hiding" folders, since it will have to be a direct function of the file browser app itself. I'm afraid that I don't know of any that offer anything like that feature.
To be absolutely clear, there are no features or functions in an SD card filesystem that will allow this sort of security flagging, and to do it at the OS level would involve some relatively low level dalvik / libc / kernel patching, which would require root, a custom ROM, and quite possibly end up being device specific, which explains why you can't find anything in the market.
I seem to manage to make a habit of this: There are literally tens of thousands of available apps that do everything under the sun. Yet the simple, not unique or unusual, function that I'm after isn't available! Oh well, many thanks for your kind help nevertheless.

Unfortunately, this one isn't simple (you are asking for a low-level redesign of the security model), and while it may not be uniquem it is something that not many people would want - referring back to the previous metaphor, how many people would buy a front door with no lock, just a keep out sign, really? Especially once they learned that burglars can't always read...
But if I ever do come across anything that might help, I'll definitely let you know

Can't you then delete the folder and use the zip. When you tap on the zip you can see the file names, but to open a file you need the PW. Not ideal since ES Fie Explorer doesn't support copying directly to a zip file, but it is as close as you can get, I think.
Edit: I don't usually put shortcuts to things I don't want others peeking at on the homescreen.
I hope this proves useful to someone, but especially noobs like myself! I've searched high and low for a a way to access and install apps that are either restricted by country (I'm in Vancouver, BC) or by device type of and up to now was only able to find references here at XDA that involve using VPN. If the following tip is already common knowledge and I somehow overlooked it, I apologize in advance.
Yesterday I ran across this article handy applet that so far has worked flawlessly for me:
Clearly I can't post URLs yet but the applet "Real APK Leacher" can be downloaded at:
www[dot]mediafire[dot]com[slash]?5vibfddvxmh98y
No need to install anything, but just unzip the DL into any new folder and run it directly from there. It does require Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0 or later. First time the tool is launched it prompts you for a DeviceID and associated account and P/W for the device. I used the DeviceID for my Galaxy S2.
(To find the DeviceID on a phone, enter [*#*#8255#*#*] (not including the brackets), and find the lines that begin with "JID="and "DeviceID-".
When I first ran the tool, I ran a search and got no results.. Found that the trick is to enter the search term(s) and then select the "custom" radio button. I've used the tool to successfully DL and install 1) Google Currents, 2) Onlive Desktop, 3) USAA Mobile Banking, 4) HBO GO, 5) Canada Post App, 6) UPS app, 7) Fedex 8) Hulu+ 9) all Amazon apps, 10) Realtor.ca, and many others. Till now I haven't run across any app I wanted that I haven't been able to install using the tool. Hope you have as much luck as I have with it.
After downloading the APKs to your computer desktop, simply transfer to the Prime via you're method of choice and install.

I tried to be as detailed as possible in my post (it was late, I was tired, perhaps I wasn't) which is why I went to the trouble of pointing out how I used my smartphone (the GS2) to carry out the procedure myself. I certainly don't claim to know exactly how the tool works behind the scenes, but I think it most likely needs to "fool" the source it accesses to DL the requested APKs into thinking the DL request is coming from a phone rather than a tablet.
In any case, there are probably many ways in which to retrieve a DeviceID. The method I went to the trouble of describing just happens to be the only way that I know how to do so. If you know of another... GREAT... use it. If not, then well, I think anyone frequenting these forums is probably clever enough to figure out/search for other ways.
In this day and age, I don't think that there are many tablet owners out there that don't also own or have access to a phone as well. In light of this fact, I assumed (perhaps unwisely) that readers of this thread don't require the same level of handholding/specificity that less tech-savvy members of the population might.
For those who've found other work-arounds to achieve the same end and are happy with their method, well, this post isn't meant for you. For others, like me, who've been seeking a simpler way, I truly hope you find the tool as useful as I have.

Just googled the tool and seems it's getting quite a bit of attention; certainly not unknown. Favourable reviews/mentions from well known and respected sites. I In fact, I seems like someone here at XDA beat me to the punch in extolling its virtues ... found link to an active thread in the General Section.
While there are ways to check out executables of questionable provenance (particularly a Java applet on a PC) without endangering/in a secure environment, particularly when link to said executable comes from a noob poster such as myself, you are wise indeed to be cautious! For the adventurous among you, check it out at your own risk.
Searching on "real apk leecher" (note the correct spelling), it looks like this tool came out a week ago. It wants your email acct, password, and device ID. At least to start out.
From the screenshot, the apparent dev, Nhat Cuong Mobile, is a Vietnamese outfit with website here: http://nhatcuong.vn/. However, it's a mobile phone sales & repair site, and I can't find any info on software development (I can speak Viet).
If you do try this out, be extremely wary.

Hi !
I am a friend of the author of the topic and I discovered these troubling screenshots with him.
To start, we installed Remix OS on a new USB key, on persistent mode, and my friends used it during few days.
Today, by curiosity I launch a file carving operation with a tool called Foremost which is usualy used to recover deleted files.
Firstly plug the usb key to a Linux computer,
- Identify the key with the following command: #fdisk -l
- Then launch Foremost like this: #foremost -t png /dev/sdX
Now you can go to the output folder and explore the many .png files, there are mainly systems files, but among all these files we have found a lot a very small screenchots taken without our knowledge, I've put a few of them in attachments.
We can see tow types of screenshots,
- small part of the screnn 420*420px, <50ko
- full windows 420*420px, <50ko
I find it strange and I would like to know what you think and if you can reproduce this.

File system doesn't matter I believe ; ( -- perhaps as long as it's journalled). Without seeing the full extent of the images; I/we can only guess - but as data recovery programs like the one you used just searches the raw data on the disk for everything that has valid header/data/footer i.e. hasn't been overwritten; all it would take is an image cache stored for perhaps graphics/animation purposes and as long as it hasn't been overwritten these will be scraped; also the sleep mechanism/some sort of swap file could also cache current screen contents to a file that would be scraped.
Again without seei g the full extent/location of the jpgs it's hard to say either way.
What this is is probably recent tasks. On any android device you will find images of recent tasks as a snapshot of everything.
Screen shots of my current device.
Missed one.
The XML files are of what task is currently running and which ones have stopped.
If you notice my recent apps correspond to the images in root/data. There is nothing suspect going on just android working. If you are worried use two step verification for you accounts.
lol its a recent task android system u guys..
Android uses screenshots of your tasks to show it on Recent Apps Panel. Those screens are not showed in gallery because in the same place there is a file named ".nomedia". Once you close one task or one another screenshot of the same app is taken, the old one is deleted automatically. Most of Android devices do that.

is there any way to modify the APK so it will properly install? i don't believe the app to actually be incompatible, it is just proprietary to a different brand of phone.

i know there is Android Studio and SDK tools, but there is a lot there and i don't know exactly what is needed. i was just hoping that changing an APK for proprietary apps to install on non-proprietary devices was a normal thing, and that there would be a straight forward way to do this. sadly, i don't see any guides on this.
might just have to look around for something more generalized, like what you were talking about. i am surprised that there isn't a normal process for this type of thing. meh
well, thanks anyhow. thank you for replying here. at least that might give me an idea on where to go from here. in the meantime, imma just give this thread some more time. see if anyone knows anything more specific about this.
P.S. oh yeah! i do recall some kind of google market app that would allow you to change, or emulate, a device to download apps from the Play Store that are stated as not being compatible. will have to look for that and see if it still works. if someone knows where to find this, that would be really great.
