HELP: x96 box how to recognize version and flash custom ROM - Android Stick & Console AMLogic based Computers

Hi mates, thank you for help. I've read dozens of topics and I see lot of confusion around, I cannot find a single topic/post where someone kindly explained the steps to flash this box without the risk to brick it! I particular I need:
1) How to know which version I have, I just read 2GB RAM 16GB flash on botton of my x96 air
2) Since I've tried to flash a custom rom from the stock recovery (as was suggested to do!) and got a signature error of the zip file I'm asking how to flashTWRP (or start with it) and how to choose the proper TWRP!
Unfortunately the author of the ROM believed we are all experts or it's easy to find these infos.. so thank you all for your kind advices!

[Q] Idiot's guide to ROMs, Kernels, CWM, rooting etc

Hi there
Having spent most of yesterday evening trying to work out why my attempt to root my S2 failed whilst getting confused with rooting, roms, kernels etc, I spent the rest of the evening trying to find an idiot's guide to it all, I did not find one.
When I rooted my HTC Hero I find a very helpful idiot's guide that both guided me through the process of rooting, and explained, in layman's terms, how the different bits worked together; I would love to find such a guide for the S2.
I have found some semi-helpful guides to how to root, but these were still written in rather technical language. i.e."install the unsecure kernel then the CWM will update from the download screen; however if you update the ROM an unsecure is not needed because they include a kernel" add to this things like wiping the partition etc it seemed rather confusing, which I am sure it is not, I just need it explaining in layman terms so i can see how the jigsaw fits together.
Having probably been too screened out last night I could well have missed the idiot's guide, so apologies if I did; would you be able to point me in the right direction please?
Thanks
Andy

Follow the "Instructions - ODIN (long)"
That is helpful, thanks.
Unfortunately it still does not make much sense
"This rooted kernel is for the "rooting beginners" and those who want to keep as close to stock as possible. CF-Root takes the kernel from an original Samsung firmware, and just adds root, busybox, and ClockWorkMod (CWM4/5) recovery
THIS IS NOT A ROM - it is only a modified kernel. You need to have the relevant firmware already on your device. You do NOT need to wipe anything for this patch. You DO need to read the instructions. PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE POST!"
I have no idea what this means. What is a kernel, firmware, CWM etc. What is the difference between this and a ROM (which it is not for some reason)?
I know these might be as simple as asking the difference between a letter and a number, but I have yet to come across a clear explanation.

1) what is a kernel?
A)The central module of an operating system. It is the part of the operating system that loads first, and it remains in main memory. Because it stays in memory, it is important for the kernel to be as small as possible while still providing all the essential services required by other parts of the operating system and applications. Typically, the kernel is responsible for memory management, process and task management, and disk management.
The definition of kernel is "the portion of an OS (Operating System) that is responsible for interacting with the hardware. It is the operating system software that runs in kernel mode on the computer's processor and which provides low-level intelligence for the operating system. In other words, the kernel is the "heart" of an operating system.
2) What is a Rom?
A) its a mobile operating system for ur phone, just like windows xp or windows 7 for ur computer.
3) what is CWM?
A) CWM- Clock Work Mod , its a custom recovery where u can choose to install custom roms, kernels, themes etc and also u can wipe data, format system etc
hope the above Info will be of some help 2 u
OK. Best bit of advice I can give you is to read the Stickies. Thoroughly. There are no shortcuts. Taking shortcuts leads to borked phones.
The answers to all your questions are in those threads. Yes, you have to do some reading/learning, but that's the way it is (refer to/read my comment above again re: borked phones).
How to install Xenon ROM - I am new
I am new in installing ROMs and rooting the phone.
I have a lot of info about different ROMs and methods how to install it.
I am interested in installing
[ROM][ICS 4.0.3] Xenon ROM v1.1 [18/6/12][Themed + Touchwiz][CF-Root][XWLPD]
I have rooted my phone using the following method:
[GUIDE] ROOT/UNROOT Stock ICS Firmware without flashing unsecure kernel
As per installation instruction of Xenon ROM, I have to Choose "install zip from sdcard", but instead of it, I have only "install zip from sdcard or external SD"- is it the same?
Please advise, if possible with links what should I do.
Thank you very much for your support and patience.

Yes, select that option. It will take u to the next screen where you have to select the zip file you have copied. Navigate to the path where the zip file is and install.

Because of the way you've rooted, you still have stock recovery. To achieve what you want, follow the first four steps of your link first.

1. [GUIDE] ROOT/UNROOT Stock ICS Firmware without flashing unsecure kernel
2. I installed ROM Manager from a marked, and CWM using this program.
3. Rebooted in to recovery mode.
4. Done
After it I changed at least 5 ROMs!!! now yellow triangle!

[HELP] Got an UMI Cross, found trojans and need help flashing a new rom

Hi all
I just got an UMI Cross recently and from reading about the possibility of trojans on chinese phones, the first thing I did was install a couple of different popular scanners (ESET was one of them)
The 2 scanners I tried both found trojans (UUPAY) and so what I want to do now is flash a new ROM onto the phone, I have found some new roms but now I am unsure of the best way to go about flashing the phone.
I know I need to install CWM or something similar but not sure on the best way to do this or even if its universal (in terms of installing)
So, any help is appreciated
Thanks
anyone? D:

Right, it's easy peasy , download this and plonk on your sd card http://www.needrom.com/mobile/ctr-recovery/
download mobile uncle tools and select recovery update, selecting the zip on your sd card, all done!
It says root is needed, how do I root the device?
I worked it out, found my device is rooted and put on the recovery thing and was able to get into it ! yay
But when I tried to flash the rom I downloaded it just said aborted
Not sure what rom to use either >_<
http://www.needrom.com/mobile/umi-cross-c1/
I downloaded the latest flash rom from there, does that mean I have to use Flash Tools?
Cheers

Ended up flashing a different rom and it worked fine, no more infected apps on phone yay!
If anyone runs into same issue, feel free to contact me and I will help
Now on the new rom, lookout reports contacts and phone as adware

[Q] Hisense U980 Stock Recovery

Hi guys,
I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to point me to a link for a Hisense U980 Stock Recovery and scatter file. Mine has unfortunately become corrupted and i currently have the MLS recovery (Chinese) version on my device. I've basically followed the guide I've found on XDA forums to root and install the custom ROM but i'm having the following issues:
After flashing the custom, my SIM management option is greyed out under settings. Therefore, it's not detecting either of the SIM card's installed (dual SIM phone).
Running the new MIUI OS, my devices soft keys (Home, Back buttons etc.) are no longer functional making it difficult to navigate menu options.
I've tried following the tutorial to create a stock recovery but MTK Droid Tools is not detecting my device.
I've downloaded the stock ROM from needrom but am unable to flash it with the current recovery.
My feeling is, if i can revert to the stock recovery, i'll be able to flash the stock ROM.
I've posted some images as well.
Any help will greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Graham

Phone must be rooted (IRoot works)
1. Install any root explorer or browser and then check if root permissions are enabled (Security App>Permission>Root Permission).
2. Modifying Build.prop
2.1 Open root browser/explorer and navigate to system folder.
2.2 Open build.prop with the text editor (root browser comes with it)
2.3 Add this line on last line of the text then save. Select allow to all permission prompts.
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
If the keyboard is missing download a keyboard APK like swiftkey and install it the through the file explorer.
Hi guys...
I have a question and a suggestion
For the stock ROM I found where I can download it its covered in the official forum for the hisense but its in Chinese I think I can't post the links.. Also I used the frameroit apk to root my phone its simple... My question is ... Have anyone got this to work I have the links for the miui for u980 but its my only device now n I don't want to risk ... If so can anyone post a screen shot for it n is it worthy I always was a fan for slimroms... Didn't like miui but its the only option now ... Also I found a link to twrp recovery for it... My main concern is not bricking the device as I always used to flash Samsung devices n this is my 1st time with hisense... But I like the device n the hardware is good enough for me... Do u think miui will make a difference..
Thx

Hello Graham and everyone, you guys are struggling so much.
I'm gonna try to backup my rom and post it for all of you my friends.
But gonna have to clean it first, so be patient. Have a good day.
Ok, i finished uploading my ROM, I don't know if the stock recovery is included in it.
I would like to help you and backup or copy/paste my stock recovery files. I will search online and if you have an idea you can help me too.
I can't use a PC because currently my phone's USB is broken and no one has a similar one here. So, I'm ordering one online.
That's why i backed my ROM using "Online nandroid backup".
Here is the link for the ROM:

Completly lost trying to root G715FN

Hello,
Let me try to recall everything I tried.
The first thing I have done is to unlock the bootloader. I had 0 troubles with that. But after that, I tried to root the phone and there is no luck.
First thing I found is that there is no dedicate root tool for this phone. So my first option was patch boot.img with Magisk. I done that but it give me an error with vbmeta verification.
I read some guides related with TWRP but had almost the same issue. I also tried to port myself TWRP with the same luck.
So after that, I though the better idea is was to built the house from the ground, not from the roof so I started searching about VBMeta and that stuff. I'm not very sure what's VBMeta or what it does but AFAIK, it's something that check several firmware integrity (maybe CRC?) and, if it's not the correct, it will say so and don't let you begin the phone. Several investigations later I found out that I have no clue on how to path/change/whatever VBMeta in order to flash a patched boot.img with Magisk root and so, I can't install/port TWRP.
I'm so sorry for posting this here and I know that there is tons of tutorials but that's my main issue: I find several guides, some for some phones (PCBs), some outdated, some without complete information... If you could point me out on the correct direction and help me with this I will really appreciate that.
Thank you in advance.
Bump!
I know you already sold this phone, but I post answer for other people reading this thread.

Stock Rom or partitions for Huawei Y6 2018 [ATU-L21]

Hi, i tried to install a custom rom in my device (y6 2018 ATU L21) and an error ocurred due to my ****ty usb cable, so now im in a big trouble because the phone is bricked.
I backup some partitions before the accident such as kernel, ramdisk but guess what, the most important (system.img) is corrupted and i can't do anything.
The phone boots and shows huawei logo and then black screen forever, i can't access TWRP nor Erecovery, im completly stuck.
I searched on "Huawei Firmware Finder" but any of the ROMs for ATUL21 works (some of them have missing partitions) so now i only depend on the community, if there is any good person that has this phone and wants to help me by sharing the partitions to me i will appreciate such act of generosity, if you want to help me you can follow those steps (Need to be root):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/guide-twrp-backup-current-partitions.3853831/
If you have any stock rom that works for this model im glad to accept it .
Have a good day.
I think I have this for you:

Hello, it's been a while since the post but I still need your help. I have the same problem as describe. I downloaded the file from the nice man. Tried to flash it with fastboot but the phone still has the same problem. maybe you can solve your problem and can help me.
I only have access to fastboot because the rest doesn't work. maybe you also have a custom ROM that works on the device, which doesn't necessarily have to be original software.
Thanks in advance

Hi, this is what i have done to recover the phone. First, there is one mistake that i made and it was trying to flash the files from fastboot, you can't do that because the phone is bricked, instead you need to download the firmware from "Huawei Firmware Finder" and then you need to dissasemble your phone to press the test point. look at this video for reference huawei test point once your PC is going to recognize your device as 'COM' on the device manager, and then you need to use a tool to flash the firmware, i can't share with you the tool since i have switched to Linux distro and i don't use Windows anymore. But if you were smart enough to flash your phone i think with a little bit of search you are gonna find.
Good Luck and have a good day.
Hello thanks for the answer, I have already downloaded stock roms from 2 different sites, both are the same. There are many subfolders in the file but after a long search you can find some .app files right? What should I do with the file exactly? Flash this directly? If so, do you happen to remember the name? Or did you extract the various files from this file, such as "Boot" or something else?
