MiniApp Model (Represented by Quick Apps) to Play a Major Role in New Era
Digitalization has inspired a whole host of new services that have revolutionized daily life. For example, hospitals have launched online registration and consultation platforms, airlines have opened up online booking and boarding; merchants offer promotions on e-commerce platforms; and mobile game companies have made their games easier than ever to access. MiniApp is a new web-based model for mobile app development that lowers the “friction to use” dynamic: no installation, tap-to-use, and instant access. It enables users to easily and almost instantly access content and services whenever and wherever they need them.
As pointed out by Mr. Xuemin Wang, Vice President of the Huawei European Research Institute, MiniApps are sure to play a critical role in the upcoming digital era. Quick apps, as an implementation of MiniApps, are remarkably easy for users to find and access, and address a broad range of mobile device usage scenarios, including those on Huawei devices. Users only need a single tap (or they can simply scan a QR code, or select a web link) to run quick apps. And, since quick apps are based on native rendering, just as native apps are, users can enjoy the same experience as with native apps, but without the hassle of the installation process.
Meanwhile, another advantage of quick apps is easy development, which can help developers quickly seize opportunities in this new digital era.
"In innovation projects, the quick deployment of developments is a decisive factor and very intensive in time. Quick App helps us to overcome this limitation."
Pablo Coca, Business Development & Operations Director at CTIC, W3C Spain Chapter Host.

Rapid Growth in China and Enormous Potential in Europe and Other Regions
The MiniApp model is quickly taking shape in China. Recent data shows that approximately 10% of Internet traffic in 2020 came from MiniApps. Currently, quick apps can be accessed on more than 1.2 billion online devices, and have a user retention rate over 70%. Compared with figures from last year, the number of active users of quick apps has increased by 37%, and the number of quick apps has increased by over 46%. Given their innovative user experience, quick apps have become a highly empowering and cost-effective choice in the 5G era.
In Europe, and many other regions, the MiniApp model has yet to be promoted on a major scale. Nonetheless, it offers enormous potential, allowing users in these regions to access games, go shopping, book airfare and hotels, take public transportation, and access public services, all without the trouble of installing an app. This saves both storage space and time, and enables a new “here and now” app access and usage dynamic, while enriching digital living immeasurably.
"The market opportunity for quick apps is enormous."
Brian Meidell, FRVR CEO
"Consumer experience has changed tremendously. Let's bring new standards to the market. Let's facilitate content production for quick apps."
Ilker Aydin, Famobi CEO
In the process of boosting the global quick app ecosystem, Huawei has also delivered supporting technologies to developers. Huawei Quick App IDE provides full-process capabilities for quick apps, covering quick app design, development, debugging, testing, building, packaging, and release, for multi-platform app development and operations on a wide range of devices, with global distribution through a single point of access. Huawei also provides developers with a wealth of HMS Core capabilities, including Account Kit, In-App Purchases (IAP), Location Kit, and Push Kit, which are crucial for bolstering product capabilities, optimizing user experience, boosting ad monetization, and expanding the service and distribution scope.
According to statistics collected for the first quarter of 2021, the global Monthly Active Users (MAU) for Huawei Quick Apps witnessed a year-on-year increase of 150%. The total number of global Huawei Quick Apps had reached a staggering year-on-year increase of 260%. Huawei will continue to work with the open source software community OW2 to promote the accessibility of quick apps and nurture crucial innovation.
About OW2 and the MiniApp Model
The open source community OW2 is an independent non-profit organization founded in 2007 and headquartered in France. It is dedicated to promoting industry-level open source software enablers for enterprise, and building a service ecosystem.
The MiniApp model is defined under the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and includes a set of standards jointly formulated by companies including Huawei, Alibaba, Baidu, Google, and Microsoft to adapt to devices and operating systems from multiple vendors.

A global fintech company that leads the industry in digital security and payments enablement technology says their recent integration with Huawei Mobile Service (HMS) has enabled them to continue meeting their customers’ strong demand for user-friendly, highly secure digital banking services and will help unlock new commercial opportunities.
Entersekt is a South African-based company that pioneered phone-as-a-token, out-of-band push authentication and pride themselves on innovating in digital security, payments, and user experience in the financial sector. It works with some of the biggest names in banking and payments, including some of the largest global payments networks like Swisscard, and core banking providers like Capitec Bank, Absa and Nedbank, and offer a range of solutions spanning user authentication, digital identity, contactless, and remote customer registration.
The company fast-tracked work on its mobile software development kit (SDK) and integrated HMS’s fully open Chip-Device-Cloud capabilities, including Huawei’s Push Kit. This facilitates push messaging, enabling banking apps using Entersekt’s technology to better engage Huawei device users and giving consumers a more targeted and tailored banking service.
Entersekt chief commercial officer Dewald Nolte said the company’s collaboration with Huawei also ensures consumers upgrading to new Huawei devices will continue to be protected from fraud, giving them added confidence to bank securely.
“As more and more people choose to manage their personal finances on mobile devices, consumers expect to be able transact digitally without fear or compromise, and this partnership helps give Huawei device users peace of mind when managing their finances with applications that employ our technology,” Nolte said.
The fintech provider holds an 80 percent share of the South African digital banking authentication market and counts some major overseas banks as customers, with millions of consumers worldwide relying on the company’s software when conducting their personal banking. With the updated SDK now ready for release to app developers across the globe, Nolte regards the integration with HMS as another opportunity for the Entersekt and institutional customers listing on AppGallery.
“Not only does our latest collaboration with Huawei mean we’re better placed to meet consumer needs, it also opens up new markets and ensures that the growing number of Huawei device users can benefit from this technology, both in South Africa and abroad,” said Nolte.
Nolte also said the collaboration was made easier thanks to Huawei’s commitment to providing developers with full-cycle operational support.
“Our engineers report that the integration effort ran very smoothly, with proactive support and collaboration from Huawei,” said Nolte.
Huawei provides, worldwide, and round-the-clock operation support throughout the entire development cycle to incentivise innovation, ensure ecosystem prosperity, and help developers succeed in business.
Entersekt’s latest update is just one example of the thousands of Huawei’s collaborations with the world’s top developers to create quality apps, with Huawei’s fully open Chip-Device-Cloud capabilities helping accelerate app experience innovation. To date, over 60,000 apps have integrated Huawei’s unique hardware and software capabilities to create an enhanced user experience.
All applications developed in collaboration with Huawei, along with thousands of other quality apps, are available on Huawei’s open and secure app distribution platform, AppGallery. As one of the top three app marketplaces globally, AppGallery is available in more than 170 countries and regions, and connects over 650 million users to Huawei’s smart and innovative ecosystem.
Not only does AppGallery ensure user privacy and security, it also provides unique functional experiences and better app discovery options. It aggregates quality popular applications from around the world, with thousands of apps across 18 categories including news, social media, entertainment, and more.

Promotion resources on AppGallery in the Chinese mainland
From our experience, after the developer’s applications have been released on AppGallery in China and are based on HMS, they usually have a need for resources to promote. To help App developers who are entering China for the first time, Huawei has rich promotion resources to provide, including top banner, push messages, new releases, Global apps, and Content Window. With all the resources, we can guarantee you a big boost in user acquisition and monetization.
Joint operations with Huawei to distributing your applications
HUAWEI AppGallery cooperates with developers to operate apps and distribute them worldwide. It provides convenient development services and quality operations resources and carries out various marketing activities to drive use and transaction volume growth. If developers participate in Huawei’s joint operation and have further cooperation with Huawei, their apps will appear in these activities. Joint operation and joint marketing can help games to obtain user growth quickly. An important point is that Huawei provides a higher percentage of the share of the joint operation. Compared with 70% for Google Play developers, the share for Huawei AppGallery developers is 85% for the first two years.
Gift cooperation for developers to promote in China
The Gift Management module is open to all enterprise developers and supports the configuration of global gift packages. After a gift package is created and approved, it is displayed on the app details page of the Huawei AppGallery client. Additional exposure positions will be offered to gift packages that meet specified requirements.
Other promotion resources
Huawei provides one-stop application distribution services for developers. In addition to the preceding promotion resources, Huawei also provides multiple resources to help developers attract new users and generate revenue. For example, developers can create operation activities by themselves after released in China, which is configured with different resource slots based on the benefits and purpose. After the activities are approved, they can be officially launched on the Huawei AppGallery (including children center, education center, and game center). In addition, the Huawei AppGallery community is an important resource developed by Huawei. Developers can publish content, initiate community activities, and answer user questions in the community to gain greater influence and exposure. Besides, the content recommendation is a new column of Huawei AppGallery, which can help developers present valuable developer/app stories and bring their application closer to consumers.
Huawei have diverse promotional resources to help developer enter the Chinese market, and for more information about how to grow with AppGallery in China, please contact us by email: [email protected]

ATRESplayer PREMIUM Sees Record-Breaking Viewership Thanks to Improved User Experience

Last year saw a growing increase in consumer demand for online recreation – a trend that continues to surge in the early months of 2021. In line with this market development is the increasing popularity of entertainment app downloads, with Spanish media app ATRESplayer PREMIUM being one of the platforms to experience record-breaking growth because of it. However, alongside its ever-growing popularity, the media giant leading communication group in Spain and the only audiovisual company with key positions in all the sectors in which it operates (television, radio, internet, cinema, production for third parties and training), also faced equal challenges due to the sudden influx of daily views and members.
ATRESplayer PREMIUM has seen an increase in both new monthly users and online streamers since September 2020. Despite the large userbase of Huawei’s Mate30 and P40, however, problems arose when Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) customers discovered they could only access the basic functions of the Spanish media player. As ATRESplayer PREMIUM’s online viewing number continued to grow steeply, the site’s online capacity began to dwindle, leaving viewers with frozen screens and crashing internet platforms.
To maintain their reputation and commitment to their new users, ATRESplayer PREMIUM needed a solution to enhance its user experience. Doing so was sure to increase the platform’s user retention rate and overall conversion rates.

Since addressing these issues, ATRESplayer PREMIUM has committed to bringing the ultimate user experience with diversified creative and premium news and recreational content for its users. How? The platform chose to collaborate with Huawei. By integrating with the open capabilities provided by HMS Core, ATRESplayer PREMIUM was able to successfully enhance and smoothen the viewing experience based on innovative technologies, boosting its user retention rate.
Secure and efficient login with one tap
Before the partnership, users needed to provide an email address, telephone number, nickname, and more to sign up to ATRESplayer PREMIUM. As well as going through a cumbersome sign-up process, users worried about the possibility of an information leak. ATRESplayer PREMIUM chose to prioritize user experience when integrating with the HUAWEI Account Kit which enables one-tap sign-up and sign-in. This function also supports multi-device synergy, meaning users can sign into multiple devices at the same time. Not only has the entire sign-in experience improved, boosting the ATRESplayer PREMIUM’s conversion rate, but app developers have also saved money on SMS as verification codes are no longer needed. The partnership also integrated ATRESplayer PREMIUM with HUAWEI ID which was awarded with the European Privacy Seal (EuroPriSe) certification. The certification ensures that HUAWEI ID protects users’ privacy and data with advanced industry-standard protection technologies and measures available, giving users a peace of mind when using ATRESplayer PREMIUM with AppGallery.
Real-time push for more active users
As more users turn to ATRESplayer PREMIUM for movies, TV shows, and broadcasting programs, they have demanded more from the likes of series updates, live-streaming alerts, news broadcasting, and hot headlines. Considering this, ATRESplayer PREMIUM chose to integrate with the HUAWEI Push Kit to deliver relevant updates and alerts to be displayed on users' devices without the app running in the background. The developer is able to push the latest content updates and relevant messages promptly, delivering to 99% of the users within ten minutes. This has effectively helped ATRESplayer PREMIUM in establishing a good connection with users and improving user perception and activity.
All-round analysis for prompt optimization
A surge in new users is unavoidable and the influx led to some users experiencing video freezing and crash issues when using the ATRESplayer PREMIUM platform. To understand the causes and promptly resolve the issues, ATRESplayer PREMIUM has integrated HUAWEI Analytics Kit to collect crash events, analyze them, and identify the problems under different scenarios to eventually tackle them.
Breeding success through intimate collaboration
The collaboration between ATRESplayer PREMIUM and Huawei extends beyond a technical partnership, having joined forces for two major joint marketing campaigns since last year. The first collaboration was a Christmas campaign between December 18th and 31st that wound up a resounding success for the developer, and the two companies are currently working together on an International Cat Day campaign which runs till March 5th.
ATRESplayer PREMIUM was promoted heavily to AppGallery users in Spain for the two campaigns, leveraging Huawei’s extensive marketing capabilities. Reciprocating Huawei’s commitment, the developer offered AppGallery users added value when they download the app through the platform. This includes a 10% discount on its ATRESplayer PREMIUM service as well as an exclusive promotion for AppGallery users to win up to 6 months of it. This was the first time the developer offered such a generous promotion deal, underlining the level of trust the company has for Huawei and AppGallery.
ATRESplayer PREMIUM saw its average daily download figures during the Christmas campaign surpass November’s figure by more than 260% which then helped the developer beat its previous month’s monthly downloads by over 65%. Inspired by Huawei’s marketing prowess and dedication, ATRESplayer PREMIUM is actively exploring more ways to extend its partnership with AppGallery.

The success of an app is not just dependent on the value it offers users, but also how efficiently it reaches them. HUAWEI AppGallery Connect app service platform is designed to help app developers improve development and operations efficiency, attract a wider range of users and generates greater revenue, by offering end-to-end services at every step along the way, from app innovation and development, to distribution, operations, and analysis, with support for a broad range of devices.
App developers share a number of common challenges when releasing an app. For example, how to acquire most users? How to reach target users with optimal precision? How to improve monetization while continuing to acquire users? All of these challenges, and many others, are addressed at the AppGallery Connect Academy · Live event, offering actionable insights on how to grow your app business to new levels.
Partner with AppGallery Connect to grow your business, by harnessing global app distribution and broad-based device support.
As a top-3 global app marketplace, HUAWEI AppGallery provides access to a wide variety of both global and locally-oriented apps across 18 app categories and has attracted over 530 million MAU in 170+ countries and regions by the end of 2020.
In order to continuously provide quality and safe app experience for users, AppGallery has launched AppGallery Connect, a one-stop app service platform that empowers developers’ app creativity and business growth. As of the end of 2020, AppGallery Connect had already partnered with 2.3 million developers across the globe, facilitating 384 billion app distributions on AppGallery in 2020 alone.
A/B Testing: Conduct group experiments to determine the best variant for your app.
A/B Testing enables you to make informed operations decisions based on specific data. It conducts group experiments to determine user preferences related to UI design, written content, and product functions. A/B Testing does not directly boost user activity, but its experiment results help you determine user preferences, and improve indicators such as DAU and MAU.
In one notable example, an app team split users into two groups to determine whether a new function could facilitate user engagement. This function was only made available to one group. Two weeks later, the daily active duration of users in the treatment group was half an hour longer than that for users in the control group. In light of this, the team ultimately decided to release the function, and was proven correct, as the daily user activity duration rose by 15%.
Remote Configuration: Change how your app looks and works, without requiring users to update the app.
Sleep Sounds is an app that provides lullabies and natural white noise to help users fall asleep with greater ease. The Sleep Sounds team utilized AppGallery Connect Remote Configuration to make changes to their app, while also avoiding the need to release a new version. The team simply made changes on the cloud, and the changes took effect on the app side. This enabled Sleep Sounds to make targeted recommendations to users based on their local market, age, gender, and other attributes, upon obtaining the user’s consent. Just two weeks into using the service, Sleep Sounds saw an 8% increase in its number of users, and a 10% increase in user engagement.
App Linking: Provide a consistent link access across platforms and versions, for higher conversion rates.
App Linking helps you create deep links for in-app content, and display them across a wide range of channels, including those on social media. By tapping a link, the user can directly access the in-app content. Those users who have not installed the app will be redirected to HUAWEI AppGallery for download and installation.
For example, if you are planning a promotion in your app, App Linking can help you place the promotional link on a diverse range of ad platforms. Existing users can then launch the app and open the specific page with just a tap; new users will be redirected to AppGallery to download and install the app, and then to the specific promotional page upon launching the app.
Linking premium in-app content enables you to convert mobile web users into native app users, which provides a way to grow your user base. App Linking also supports tracing parameters, which means that you can view data analysis and trace traffic sources across different channels.
App Messaging: Send contextual messages to engage users.
With the Call Screen app, users can choose from a range of customized incoming call skins, some of which have visual alerts to ensure that important calls aren’t missed. But the developer found that some of the new skins they had released were not being downloaded by very many users, and reviews of the skin were mixed. To address this, the developer used the App Messaging service in AppGallery Connect to notify users of new available skins, after obtaining their consent. Now, when a user signs in, Call Screen provides them with skin recommendations based on their preferences. The service helped increase the number of app users by 11% in just three weeks.

Social media has long been a ubiquitous presence in most mobile users’ digital lifestyle. There are more than 4.33 billion social media users in the world with 99% of them accessing the platforms via mobile. Needless to say, competition is at an all-time high especially for incumbents who have the technology to compete but are overshadowed by its older competitors.
Among these aspirational challengers is Likee, the short video creation platform that is making waves among mobile users globally and boasts cutting-edge video shooting and editing tools. Being a young company, they wanted a platform partner who could not only help them grow their userbase, but also offer the support they needed to enhance the overall user experience of the app.
Huawei was the ideal partner for Likee – the developer could not only onboard AppGallery, the top three app marketplaces globally, but also leverage the powerful HMS Core to improve on the app experience. As a result, the collaboration turned out to be overwhelmingly positive – the app was able to resolve its technical issues as well as grow the platform’s userbase to more than 115 million monthly active users.
"We are excited to work with Huawei and bring Likee to millions of AppGallery users,”Likee expressed .“The Huawei team not only demonstrated keen insights to our app, but also actively worked with our developers to further optimise the experience on Huawei devices. We are touched by this dedication, and we look forward to more opportunities down the road to work with Huawei again.”
Facilitating engagement with enhanced sign-up process
Prior to the partnership, both visitors and existing users had to go through a multi-step log in process before they could engage with the content on Likee. This wasn’t ideal especially for simple engagements such as editing a quick clip or even liking and commenting on a video, as the friction point risks user abandonment.
As such, the Likee team integrated the HUAWEI Account Kit which facilitates simple, secure, and quick sign-in. The Account Kit enables users to easily sign up or log in using their HUAWEI IDs, making the entire process effortless and seamless. It also offers multi-device support so that users can enjoy access across different active devices, providing outstanding convenience.
In addition, both Account Kit and HUAWEI ID are designed with users’ privacy in mind. The HMS Core capability supports two-factor authentication (2FA), and complies with GDPR as well as industry-standard protocols such as OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect. Similarly, HUAWEI ID, a service provided by Aspiegel across Europe, is awarded with the European Privacy Seal certification. With these security measures, Likee provides its users with a peace of mind which encourages adoption among them.
Delivering content to users efficiently and competently
Likee also integrated the HUAWEI Push Kit which provides Likee with a powerful push service that promises a message delivery rate of 99% within 10 minutes.
The Push Kit boasts a global coverage of more than 230 countries and regions, and a highly capable distribution channel that can handle upwards of tens of billions of messages. By leveraging its capabilities, Likee is empowered to notify users about the latest viral content on the platform in a timely and accurate fashion, incentivising users to revisit the app and facilitating greater user engagement.
Monetise traffic with quality and privacy in mind
Likee also adopted two additional HMS Core – the HUAWEI In-App Purchase (IAP) Kit and HUAWEI Ads Kit – to monetise its highly impressive app traffic.
The team at Likee was able to introduce a convenient and secure in-app payment method with the IAP Kit. With the HMS Core’s support for multiple mainstream payment methods, it creates convenience and facilitated greater volume of in-app transactions. In addition, all data involved are encrypted and anonymized, empowering Likee to provide users a safer payment environment which encourages users to make more in-app purchases.
Along the same vein, the Ads Kit offers Likee access to the HUAWEI Ads Publisher Service that enables it to display high-quality multimedia content across six distinct formats – such as Banner, Native Rewarded, Interstitial, Splash and Roll. The variety helps the developer to promote ads in novel ways, appealing to user and encouraging click-throughs
In addition, the Ads Kit uses the open advertising identifier (OAID) – a non-permanent device identifier – to help developers personalise the ads while protecting users’ privacy. The OAIDs can then be used by third-party tracking platforms to provide conversion attributions and improve the monetisation of the app. This results in a win-win situation where Likee users gain exposure to products and services that they are interested in, while the developer generates revenue to drive further app innovation.
AppGallery provides strong growth opportunities for all developers
The HMS Core integration, on all accounts, was a huge win for Likee. The team not only enhanced app features and added Quality-of-Life improvements, but they also achieved remarkable growth – the global userbase bloom to more than 115 million active users with a 30% jump in revenue. In addition, more than 80% of all Huawei users are using their HUAWEI IDs to access Likee, signalling the strong popularity of the Kit among the community.
The entire collaboration serves as a testament to Huawei’s technological capabilities as well as commitment to its partners. Throughout the partnership, Likee had access to a dedicated technical support team from Huawei that actively assisted with the technical process which allows the developer to finish the integration in just four weeks.
