Question Fractured "Contacts" Import from Google Sync - Moto G Power (2021)

My new Moto G Power 2021 pulled in the synced material on my old phone from Google, including contacts. The problem is, it changed all of the contacts from my laboriously constructed last-name-first listings to first-name-first, the whole thing. I tried repeating the process but with no improvement. Is there any recourse other than again to laboriously change all those listings back to last-name-first? I vastly prefer it this way, and why Google would not leave it alone is vexing.

Do you have a old contacts copy saved in your backup files?
BACK UP WHAT YOU HAVE NOW TO DISK!
Set it aside in a marked folder on the PC... just in case.
Check the various settings in contacts too.
Clear sim toolkit before you try to recreate the contacts again. Clear system cache as well.
It may take some creativity and reading to sort this out...
I never trust Gookill...

Thanks. I may be naive, but I thought the whole point of Google sync was to back up the phone. Sadly, I'm a technological neophyte and am not sure how to back up the old phone (that would be the one to back up first, given that it has the contacts configured properly) onto a disc, flash drive, etc. "Creativity" and "reading" in my own areas of expertise (not tech stuff) are easy, because I know how to ask the questions and pretty much can find the answers, but this is something else. Finally, Google is greatly irritating with its relentless hustle for Chrome and its various features.

No bold type please...
I've had issues transfering contacts too.
Fun times.

This is the first time I've ever been here or tried this. I did not intentionally embolden the type; how it happened is a mystery. For all I knew, that's how it was supposed to look. This site was recommended, which is why I'm trying it. If I seem a bad fit for this place, please just let me know.

No worries. You accidentally hit bold type.

So when you added your google account and it synced your contacts, they were not formatted correctly? Just wanna make sure I understood the op correctly

The previous phone and Google were synced, and the synced material, including the contacts, were downloaded to the new phone. The contacts showed up with in first-name/last-name order rather than last-name/first-name order, as I had formatted them in the first place.

If u export them to an excel spreadsheet there is a formula that u can apply to put them back the way they were. Takes less than a minute. After that you just import them back to your phone and back them up some other way so it doesnt happen again. There r a few apps that will export them to excel format for u. If u wanna go that route I can walk u thru it.

And just to confirm, what are the settings in the contact app? Did you set that to sort by last name, and show Surname first? Default settings are sort by first, show first.

A combination of trying the various suggestions and plain blind luck has somehow produced results. Thanks to all. I had a Western Electric rotary dial phone slung around my neck on a strap, which I can return to its display shelf now. [Update: I followed the instruction below and---voila!---the boldness disappeared. It's amazing how obvious something is once it's obvious.]

And I did not touch the bold symbol that time. Someone wants a lot of shouting, I guess.

Lol, the site has its glitches.
There's the edit button too. Highlight the portion you want to edit and punched the bold icon to undo it.

[Q] How can I prove that my Android Device (SGS2) has been used by someone else?

Back Story:
My phone was left in my house (shared with other people) yesterday while I was at work. When I got home I was checking missed calls, voicemail etc and I noticed that some text messages were missing. I looked a bit more and it seems that 2 seperate sms message threads had been deleted and a number of contacts had been deleted too. Now, this has happened before to another housemate but we couldn't prove that it had been done. We are pretty sure we know who did it but I need concrete evidence that the phone was accessed.
Phone Specs: Samsung Galaxy S2, rooted, running CM7 latest nightly. I also have Cerebrus installed if that helps.
So my questions are as follows:
1) Is it possible to see what activity was happening on my phone yesterday? I don't have any "logging" software running.
2) Is it possible to retrieve the deleted SMS messages?
I work in IT so am pretty tech savvy, just not in the workings of the Android OS!
All help greatly appreciated.
P.S. I have already been able to restore the contacts that were deleted using the restore functionality in gmail.
The short answer is no. It is, at least in theory, possible to "undelete" stuff, but it isn't usually practical. Even if you did, you wouldn't have "proof" in the legal sense.
That said, I have been involved in a similar situation. Here's the approach we used. It is reasonable to assume that this behavior will continue. Therefore, get some logging software installed. Do NOT talk about it. Do nothing out of the ordinary. Just quietly install some software that will let you see what is going on with your phone. I know there are apps which will email an alert when accessed, snap a pic from the front-facing camera, log SMS to email, remotely lock the phone, etc etc. Based on what you need to accomplish, get these set up and then BE PATIENT. wait a few days (unless you normally leave your phone at home) and leave it again when the person in question might be around.
A pic would be sufficient proof I would think for confronting a roomie. If nothing else log your sms's. I use integrated Google Voice so I'd get an alert on my PC even if I didn't have the phone (very handy, that), but that may not be an option for you.
I also use SeekDroid for remote locking, and I -think- there's a remote camera provision, but it's at a higher paid level than I am subscribed to. At any rate that's my suggestions.
Or, the simple solution: Put a better lock code on your phone.
-JB
A lock code would help prevent the behavior in the future. For catching the vandal red-handed, I believe an app like Gotcha! may do what you need.

Looking for advice re AK Notepad and Catch Notes

Hope this is a good forum for this as I'm looking for Android advice, not really tied to any one phone. I'm looking for advice on AK Notepad and Catch Notes. I am brand new to Android (Nexus 4), coming from Windows Phone. I went to Windows Mobile/Phone years ago. At the time I was looking, simply to combine a PDA with a cell phone, so I would only have to carry one item instead of two. I liked/needed the Outlook - phone sync so that all my Outlook contacts, calendar, notes and to-do fully sync'd with my phone. Now, I've gone Android (although its only been a few days).
I originally was looking for something like what I had with Windows Phone, full sync'g with Outlook. But, I've read in post after post to embrace the Google philosophy and use Google Contacts and Calendar. I've done that and appreciate the ability to work from both the phone and any computer I want. This way I'm not actually tied to one computer. I stumbled upon GTD hooking up with Toodledo as a great way to handle tasks/to-do's. And, it's working well.
For notes, I started using Note Everything. It imports great from Outlook Notes. (After cleaning them up, I'm down to a little over 200 notes in about 15 categories. Hey, over 15 years of notes here.) I like the interface and the operation on the phone. But, backup is a little bit of problem. Especially with the N4, which does not have a SD card. And, while the source notes are in various forms on my computer, I'm not terribly worried if the phone crashes. I could always recreate where I'm at.
Only, I wish I could find a "simple" notes app which had cloud access. I could enter/edit from a full keyboard, and everything would be both stored on the cloud and easier to backup. Springpad might work; but it looks like you need IE9, and at work we're tied to IE8. Springpad appears to be out of the question. AK Notepad and/or Catch Notes looks like it might work. I am having trouble importing my notes into Catch, but I hope to work this out.
Any thoughts on these two? Pluses, minuses? I think, if I can do this, I'd start with AK because I only need text notes. If I get to where voice/photo notes might be needed, I think I can migrate to Catch Notes and my Catch cloud items move to Catch Notes. Is my thinking correct? If so, and assuming I can actually get my Outlook Notes into Catch, this might be a really good approach. (I do wish Catch's online documentation was a little more detailed. Right now,it looks like you have to read a boatload of FAQ's, one by one, to get an idea of how the system works; spaces instead of categories/folders, hashtags/labels as sort items, etc. And, Catch's email response seems weaker than other developers who view every user as a potential advocate for their software.)
Thanks for all advice.

Flash Cards App?

Does anyone know of a good flash cards app? I used to use Flashcards++ on my iPod/iPad when I had them, and I was wondering what flash card apps you all were using/preferred?
I've tried a couple of them on my phone, but I didn't really care for them. What I liked about Flashcards++, was that I could import my flash cards via an Excel spreadsheet, which could be hosted on my Dropbox. Also, it permitted the use of photos.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Have you tried Anki? It has web sync and photos. You can even draw on a whiteboard to answer questions.

That actually looks perfect. I will have to give it a try. Thanks again for the input!
I'm a huge fan on Anki. I like how I can not only keep the same decks across all of my devices, but my PROGRESS in the stacks across all of them as well! I usually set everything up in the desktop program and just sync it from there.

Sorry to bog you with questions, but it seems like you've used this app quite a bit. Anyway, is there a way to randomize or shuffle the deck when you study the cards? I looked on Anki's webpage, and it looks like you can randomize the order when you import it, but it doesn't seem like it randomizes it anymore than that. (i.e., like the 'randomized' order will remain consistent through out the entire deck)
Also, is there a way to create decks (or sections) within decks? This would be especially handy because typically I make a 'mega deck' for my midterms, which can be broken down into individual topics. Or, do I just have to create a deck for each topic? (Either way, its not a big deal, but the app would be 'cleaner' if you could have decks within decks.)
Lastly, how do you sync between devices? It would be awesome to have it automatically sync between my Note 10.1 and Note 2.
Thanks again for the responses. This looks like it will be replacing the void Flashcards++ has created.

In order:
In the settings you can choose to ensure that cards are not in-order when reviewed. Granted, this is a bit more relevant to things that actually HAVE an order (such as my primary purpose, language learning involving alphabets), but it seems to randomize. Maybe not the MOST random, but random.
I'm not sure about creating, but when you are importing, you can "nest" a deck inside of another. As I stated, I use Anki for language learning, and the source I use utilized Anki decks. When imported, they SHOULD import directly into the larger deck, but it does not for me. By dragging it into the larger deck, it will nest into it so you can review ALL of it, or just the smaller one. This is the mobile app, mind. It does sync that way on the desktop, too. Playing with it on here, you can also drag and drop on the desktop app as well.
You simply create an AnkiWeb account. You get the option when you install. By signing in, you can set the interval or triggers for syncing. I have mine set to sync when I close the app. On all of my machines. You can even set it to download the multimedia portions of the cards, or not. I know it works because all of the decks I sync use audio files with the cards.
You can even review online using Ankiweb (but you can't work with multimedia, just text cards), if you don't have access to any of your devices using Anki.

Android 8.1.0 unable to save contacts?

Not particularly mobile-savvy and days of forum searches have yielded nothing, now heartily sick to the back teeth with this data hungry time-vampire and at this point would quite happily drop kick it across the yard and revert to my little Pixi3 so here goes...
Bought a pair of Wileyfox Swift 2+ phones for myself and one of my sons, my lad's happy to leave the Google defaults ex-factory and can enter and retrieve contacts without issue via something called Google Play which seems to have delusions of grandueur and one eye on world domination 8-{ I on the other hand am totally old skool when it comes to handing over personal data to who knows who and cannot see any good reason why Mr. Google should have any involvement with or access to my contacts so have disabled its permissions. Trying for the first time to save a mate's phone number as a new contact threw up a "Couldn't save contact changes" message. Why not? Wot's yer problem??
Restoring permissions for all apps to do what the hell they liked when ever they liked made no difference at all, it still wouldn't and still won't save a contact? Nothing I've yet done has had any effect, it really wants me to use Google Play (whatever that is)
A functional contact directory would seem to be fundamental element of a mobile phone so why on Earth does this now have to be farmed out to an off-device server??? It's insecure, unnecessary, raises all sorts of privacy issues and frankly is taking bloody liberties in my book Why is their no option to either save a contact to the SIM or SD card, what's so hard about that?
The Guv's now pulling out what remains of his prematurely greying hair and needs to know where all the hidden switches are to get this thing to remember that at the end of the day (and the reason for its purchase) ... it's not a life coach, bank clerk and change agent rolled into one - it's a damn phone.
many thanks in advance folks for any assistance

Is there a Pocket like app, but just for bits of text, not the whole pages?

Does anyone know of an app that would behave like Pocket, but instead of saving the whole page it would allow you just to save bits of text from pages?
Its for learning purposes mostly. I spend a lot of times on FB groups or similiar places, and in like 90% of cases I need to save just one post in a thread, or just a short bit of text. Saving the whole page is counter productive cause either I forget why exactly I saved it, or I have to spend a lot of times looking for the exact info I wanted.
Pocket works great for what it's intended, and I would need something similar. Right now copy and paste seems to be the best solution, but when I send it to OneNote it adds it to new page, and what's worse it won't let me choose which workbook.
So, I need to be able to save part of text (saving images too would be a plus) and be able to quickly find it (via tags or something else). And of course, the ability to export it all. Can anyone recommend something?
I use Google Keep in exactly the manner you describe.
Take a screenshot, crop the image to only the important stuff. Move the images to a special folder perhaps, using any file manager. That's how I do it
