Can someone enlighten me as to why is it important to flash the raphael without the sim card in it, as well as the sd card. I just flashed 2 roms with the sim card in it because i didnt remember to take it out, and i want to know what to expect.
Note: i previously used to own the kaiser and i never took my sim or sd card out when i would flash a rom and this never caused me any problems so i assumed the same would be true for the raphael.
So whats the reasoning behind this? is it safe to continue flashing with the sim in the phone?

I have never had a problem flashing with SIM card in (I have flashed hundreds of times), but from what I have read, if the card is in and a call comes in while it is still loading it could mess up the flash (customization part of flash). But always better to be safe than sorry.
thats a very good reason as to why one shouldnt have the sim in there, but i highly doubt the phone can receive a call through the sim while the rom is being flashed(process when the phone shows the percent bar from 0% - 100%), some please correct me if i am wrong.
Now I can also understand that a call can or may be received when the rom is installing stuff on the first boot.
Any other input on this subject?
I'm not sure about possible incoming call when flashing, but I highly agree with this guy :

I always flash with SIM card in raphael. I presume I can't receive a call when the card is protected by PIN code. Without entering it the phone can't make calls or even receive them...
I never take my SIM or SD out. I have recieved a call before during customization(not flashing, which should be impossible) and it didn't have any ill effects. The SD: I'm pretty sure this can stay as some people use it to flash with RAPHIMG.nbh. Also, how is the sdconfig to run during customization if you leave it out. I used to do the whole take my phone apart, remove SIM/SD, flash, etc.etc. but it takes twice as long and I haven't seen any benifits. By the way, I am flashing ROMs at least 2-3 times a day while developing a new ROM. Only thing I notice with SIM in is that connection setup tends to popup during customization, but with SIM out I get the PIN pad instead. Maybe a seasoned PRO can tell us why it is supposed to be necessary.
I used to follow the practice of removing my SIM and SD card as well as plugging the charger in when flashing.
Since i've been cooking my own ROM's, I've ceased the practice of removing the SIM and SD Card - primarily because I am using the SD card to flash my ROM to the device. I still keep the device plugged to the charger.
The problem with an SD card flash approach, is that the SD card could be faulty resulting in a corrupted flash. As the device is HardSPL'ed, corrective measures are simply: obtain a new SD card, copy the ROM to it, initiate bootloader ... and one is "back in business".

LOL
You're one step ahead of me.
ASFAIK, the PIN pad (assume you mean the MS Dialer) comes up as it is apparently possible to place emergency 911 calls without a SIM present - haven't personally tried calling 911 to find out. Same as when the phone is security locked, it is possible to bypass the PIN Lock and place an emergency call to 911.
I have actually called 911 by accident once. When I was a noob, the first time I flashed I thought it was askin for a pin # or something. LOL. It does work, I hung up right away.
Awesome replies guys,
however one has not convinced me to take the sim and sd card out when flashing... i am going to continue flashing without taking the sim/sdcard out. It just saves a lot of time.

I never remove the sim or sd card when flashing. Never had any problems.
Just flashed a ROM and after the flash and hard reset, while the initial configuration was going on, I did receive a call. I did not get the ringtone when the call came in but I could see the lights blinking. I'm not sure if I could have answered the calll and I did not try it. I did have a voicemail when done. I do not see any side effects from it either.
Maybe we should have poll of who removes there simcards/sdcards and who doesn't lol j/p...
I actually remove mine after ever flash.. but seems like "everyones not doing it" lol so I guess I'll just on that bandwagon lol
sim and sd don't have to be removed. when flashing, the phone is in bootloader so there can't go anything wrong. i flash a half year now, once a day. I don't have lost my sim contacts or any content on my sd.
Ive flashed between my Kaiser and my Raphael at least 1000 times. Ive ALWAYS flashed via SD ( as i primarily use a mac and refuse to reboot into MS to use activesync ) and have NEVER removed my SIM in the process. Ive had calls come in ( As others stated, I just let the voicemail pick it up ). Not only is SD flashing SAFER ( never worry about losing a connection by bumping a cable ect ) But is it also FASTER. I carry several radio/ril combos and several OS's on the SD card itself and flash on the fly. Its a good way for me to test which radios work near which towers ( as I commute a lot )
Just my input here. Hope this helps some.
PS
I do make PIM backups of my contacts occasionally just so I have a somewhat current backup copy
I flashed mine with the SIM card and SD card in the phone before... I don't think it hurts anything.
how about flashing via the microS/D card and plugging in the power adaptor? shouldn't be a problem either right?

Its actually quite a good idea to plug it in while flashing stops you getting a bad flash from running out of battery
I've flashed with SIM and SD card in before and there where no problems. I haven't received any calls though so I can't tell you how safe it is to keep the SIM in..
I remove it now, better safe than sorry.
Ok so I got the Amaze, had everything setup and I decide to use my microsd card from my G2 and place in the Amaze. Shut the phone off, took the backing off, place teh sd card in, turned it on. Worked! For about a minute! It goes down hill from there. The phone is now saying that my SD card is damaged or if it's in there, it says Removed SD Card. I've formatted the card plenty of times, inserted and took it out plenty of times, tried 2 other sd cards, all have the same problem. Put those SD cards back into the original phones and they work fine. I'm stumped. I need help. Any ideas or suggestions? Anyone having the same issue?
Have you tried a different SD card?
Also, try to reformat it (make sure to backup your files) and just put it in without any files inside. You could also format the card from the phone as well (backup before you do).

Yeah, I've tried 3 different cards. I've reformatted them all through the computer but I couldn't through the phone. Every time I've tried through the phone, it wouldn't do anything.
at this point I don't know if it's a hardware issue or a software issue. I didn't a Factory Reset, still the same problem.. I love this phone! Everything else is awesome besides this one issue!

Run! Don't walk back to the T-Mobile store and have them exchange it.
It doesn't matter if it is hardware or software, you are experiencing an issue that others with the same product are not. You did your due diligence as far as trouble shooting yourself. Take it in to the store and tell the rep to either fix it, tell you what you are doing wrong, or swap it out.
Don't wait any longer looking for solution here!
Go now!
LOL Thanks! I'm heading there in about 30mins when I get out of work!
So I got it replaced! SD Card works! Now I gotta bring it back for another one because when the soft keys light up, you can see two dots like they didn't coat the screen properly and missed a few spots..
hello ,
suddenly my s2 won't read any sim card and it's always on flight mode ! i tried to restart the phone and it didn't work , also tried to take the battery and the sim card off for a while and it didn't work also , i did factory reset still nothing.
- the sim card worked normally on another phone
- the phone is running on android 2.3.5 because we didn't get the ICS in the middle east for some reason.
- the phone is not rooted.
- kies doesn't recognize the phone anymore .
so how do i make it work ?
and sorry for the bad English because I'm not a native speaker .

What do you mean by not read sim card network or you cannot read the data on the sim contacts etc .

Then it may not be you efs folder (IMEI!) becoming corrupted after all! Try cleaning the contacts on your sim & inside your phone & make sure none of the pins are bent or broken internally also, then try somebody elses sim card in your phone first before replacing your own! If your sim works in another phone then it's got to be something to do with the contacts/pins, as you haven't flashed your phone or anything to corrupt stuff in the first place!!

Annoyed with Android
I have the exact same symptoms except I did not play around with any software updates or “internal settings”. The memory on my phone was filled with photos I took over the weekend and some apps refused to start up because of the lack of memory. Probably the mistake, I took the SD card out to try to read it from my Win 7 notebook, because the “Gallery App” did not want to open to allow me to delete of some images to free up memory. (Well why not, most other equipment allow their SD cards to be read by Windows.)
Whatever the reason the phone is completely stuffed; the SD card is not recognised and that result in no phone connection!! The phone can't be used. This is absolutely ludicrous. One cannot sell equipment that can be made unusable this easily. I can understand maybe losing image/data on the SD card if I took it out, but now the entire phone is useless, and it seems (from other forums too) that it is quite a process to get the so-called IEMI folder back. I am really frustrated at this point and have a real annoyance with Android. Judging from the amount of hits returned after a Google search, this SD card problem is a fairly common one. I am not going to fix this; will rather get a new phone, one that works, and it will not be an Android phone. Yes I know hardcore Andriod followers will be all over my post, but just think a bit, this kind of problem should not happen and is really nonsense
(PS: People that moan about multiple postings, can't you just answer the question, even if there is another similar thread, do you have to nit pick on everything.)

Apologies for the double messages. I tried to fix it numerous times, but it does not seem to take effect.
Jokesy, the fact people don’t get paid for commenting here is completely irrelevant; I also have a day job and don’t have 6 hours in the evening to get a phone to make a call. Pointing out severe problems with a product is not spamming.

Interesting...
I am in a similar situation with a t989 phone that doesn´t recognize my simcards.
Some days ago I tried to upgrade my phone to the latest official ICS using ODIN as KIES
was always giving disconnection errors before finishing the upgrade.
Finally I got my phone stuck at the download mode with an error message and a yellow warning triangle.
I thought I had a bricked phone, but fortunately I managed to recover it using an old
official ROM. The problems is that now it doesn´t recognize any simcard inserted.
The current installed software versions are:
Android 2.3.5
Base band: T989UVKID
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Compilation number: GINGERBREAD.UVKID

Hello please i just read your post and would need your advice, my S2 just stopped recognizing my Sim card yesterday night, i was playing a fast action game on my phone and the phone suddenly went off, when it came back on it did not recognize my Sim card any longer. I tired putting the same Sim in another phone and it worked but when i returned it to mine it still did not recognize my Sim, please can you tell me what to do with regards to this issue?
i updated my phone to ICS about an hour ago and since then, my phone keeps rebooting and doesn't seem to recognize the micro SD card (the same one I've used in the phone since I got it on release day). The card is listed in the Storage menu in settings with the correct total and free space, but it doesn't recognize it otherwise. Trying to unmount it does nothing, no pictures are showing up in my gallery and the apps that are on my card are showing on my home screens with the default Android logo instead of the actual app logos. Anyone know how to fix this? The phone is not (and never has been) rooted.
The phone is working better without the card, but I can't view texts. It just says Loading... and the message never comes up.
Is there something I have to do to get ICS to recognize the micro SD card? Or do I have to do a factory reset and/or format the card (two things I don't want to have to do)?
Having the same issues here. I'm wondering if it could be something on the SD card itself that could be causing the problem. Like an app that is installed on the card or something. Thinking about clearing the card and trying it again.
Do a factory reset. With OTA updates an unrooted phones, a lot of people have problems. This is why rooted users wipe everything (factory reset) when flashing roms, because updating rom's without wiping usually causes random issues like this.

That's what I did last night (formatted the SD card) and my phone hasn't rebooted since then. Probably an app on the card that wasn't working with ICS.
I finally found it!
After hours of looking it up, i found the biggest issue I have ever had with my phone. Maybe second, after my down volume button broke (didnt fix that, ICS kinda did). Or maybe third, after my Micro SD card crashed, and when I went to repair it, it somehow wasnt the one the phone comes with...
Lets get on with this. I have waited so long, and thinking that they had a whole year to develop a perfect update, they screw it up.
I want to know why the hell the Micro SD keeps crashing my phone. I try to transfer the stuff, but it doesnt allow it. Should I buy an adapter and transfer the stuff to my pc? What will happen to all my game data? How do I restore that? Do I factory reset the phone only, the SD card, or both? I really need a perfect explanation what to do, and as much technological I am, I dont want to mess anything up.
And another thing, which might be irrelevant, but those other Googlers or HTC EVO 3D owners might have this same issue. Why is there a thick red border around the screen of my phone ( sometimes, it flashes periodically). I think its a developer option, but im not 100% sure. I really hate buggy software.
Oh, and if you guys didnt notice, or it might be just for me, but my computer doesnt detect my pc, and even the red charging light takes 5 minutes to turn on. If HTC doesnt do anything about this, im going to root, and believe me, I tried.
If HTC cant, help you guys can. Happy typing your response!

You don't factory reset the SD card, you format it. It's worth a shot, but if the card is bad it won't help.
Just like the title says. My phone doesn't load the Google play store, YouTube, or maps. Everything else, all apps work fine. I did all the cache/data reset methods etc even went as far as factory reset, no avail.
The main issue is it only doesn't work on my home wifi, when connected to other people's wifi and mobile data, it works just fine to load.
To get it to work on my house wifi I have to take out the sim card and then it starts to work just fine and loads quickly without problems. The Google apps work on other Android devices on the same wifi flawlessly as well, so I'm pinning it down as a sim card issue, but how can that be? Maybe I should try to replace the sim card but I'm not sure. (Would have to have a talk with my mom as well to get it replaced due to me just being 15)
Suggestions would be appreciated.

That's weird... I don't know why a SIM card would do that... You've tried a factory reset and that didn't work... You might want to get in a chat with a Samsung representative and look into a replacement phone. Or you could try replacing the SIM card first and see if that works. Do you have an extra SIM card lying around? It doesn't even have to be activated. If you do, try inserting that SIM into your phone and seeing if that fixes the problem. If not, then I would recommend you getting a replacement SIM and/or phone.

It is weird. I think I might try to download the marshmallow ROM in the general thread for Verizon and install it to start a new a new maybe there's a kink within the software itself, and it'll suck to have to get another replacement because this is my replacement lol. Assuming the install isn't too complicated and doesn't harm my phone. I'm fairly capable though since I remember my s3 days on at&t and custom romming that phone.
FYI forgot to mention I think this started happening a few days ago.
