The usual way using Magisk and the "MagiskHide Props Config" module works also with this ROM. I used the fingerprint of a Google Pixel 5 with Android 11 and everything works fine.

The module is documented in its XDA thread, but you can download and install "MagiskHide Props Config" (thats the exact name of the module) directly with the Magisk manager.
After you have installed the module, you need either a terminal emulator app (like ConnectBot or Termux) or you simply connect to your device from your PC via "adb shell".
When you are in the shell, you enter "su" to get root privileges (a popup should appear on your device screen). Then you enter "props" to start the fingerprint ceremony.
I think it is a bit off topic as the problem with failing SafetyNet tests is not bound to this custom ROM, but I'm sure that you will find answers to your problems if you get stuck in any of the steps I described. There are several threads here at XDA assigning that topic and at least the problem is not device-specific, so solutions for other devices might help here as well.
But I really hope my description will help you solve the problem on your device, too!

With the PixelOS, SafetyNet failed even basic integrity and fixing the fingerprint was not enough on my device. The problem must be something bigger. Maybe Android 12 isn't even ready for SafetyNet on custom ROMs. But I'm quite happy now with LineageOS 18.1 and I hope that the future will bring progress - and updates for both ROMs.

Build information
Build date: 2018-10-03
Build on: Lubuntu 16.04 LTS VM
Patch version of this build: 2018-09-05
For ZC554KL 3GB Ram, 32GB EMMC, Snapdragon 430 (MSM8937) (won't work properly on the model with 4GB RAM and 32GB EMMC)
I tested this image on my phone (X00ID) today. Here are the results:
Working (tested so far)
- Boot
- Audio
- Video
- All cameras and flashlights
- Wifi connection
- Mobile connection
- LED
- MTP
- OTG
Not working
- If you (or a root app) remount the system partition as rw and tries to modify a system file --> android freezes (hold volume down and power until the smartphone vibrates to reboot in that case)
- Gestures (the build in Focaltech 5436 touch-controller supports gestures)
Modifications
- Root Add on is already integrated (to build with integrated SU Addon: "export WITH_SU=true" before building)
Warning
Before flashing this, make a backup! I don't tested what happens, if you update aaaaaaziskurnia's version with this image (I made a clean flash).
Note:
In case of freeze: Hold Volume down + Power until the Zenfone 4 Max reboots.

Oh, I didn't know, that there is a version of the Zenfone 4 Max ZC554KL with 2/16 out there (seams to be a special version). This image is for the Snapdragon 430. The device you described have a Snapdragon 425.
So better don't install this image (I don't know if it working or not on your phone, I haven't that model so I can't test it).
Edit: Yup, your phone is a special model which I didn't know.

I have the same problem with stock rom, my specific issue, I hate ads and I am trying to use "adaway", adaway has to modify the hosts file then it crashes and I need to reboot...
I tried to edit the permissions of the hosts file but it is impossible, the phone just crashes and doesn't allow me to modify files with RW in order to change anything (looks like we are not root at all).

For that case there is a workaround. Boot to TWRP and push the host file via adb to the system partition in the right path and set the permissions with chmod. If you mounting the the system partition as rw in the recovery the system don't crash.

Instructions
Installation via recovery (TWRP/LineageOS Recovery)
* Download a recent .zip file from the links above for your device.
* Reboot into recovery mode [Press Power+Volume Up+Home].
* Wipe your data and cache partition (equivalent to doing a Factory Reset)
if you are coming from a stock ROM.
* Either: Plug in your phone into your computer, copy the zip file to a location on your Internal or External Storage on a device, click Install on TWRP on your phone and locate the zip file in the phone, or:
* Plug in your phone into your computer, and open Advanced->ADB Sideload on TWRP on your phone and swipe the slider to enter sideload mode.
Then open a command prompt/terminal on your computer in the folder you put the file by Shift-Clicking (Shift+Right Click) and selecting "Open Command Prompt/Terminal Here" (you will need to have adb installed) and type:
adb sideload name_of_zip.zip
to sideload the file. Replace name_of_zip.zip with the name of the file. If you are running Linux you may need to type adb kill-server and use sudo adb sideload if you get an `Insufficient Permissions` error.
* Download and flash GApps in the same way.

If this is your first time flashing P, you will need to install the latest unofficial TWRP image for your device from the links above before flashing a zip image, otherwise installation of a zip will invariably fail.

Thanks bro
You are awesome dev
thats a great news for us , i hope it will be a fully working rom soon as well as RR15
A review of LineageOS 16.0 for J500H(this review is for the build I made a week ago but the bugs should be the same)
What's working:
Wi-Fi
Bluetooth
Camera
Location
Flashlight
Audio(didn't experience any audio bugs as told in the OP thread)
and other minor things(basically the same as told in the OP thread)
What does not work:
RIL(no calling and SMS)
Nearly all of the apps are "incompatible" in Play Store, but installing with APK should work Ok.
As expected, no option to wake the phone with Home key(because not implemented in LineageOS itself yet)
Videos don't play OS wide(Gallery app, YouTube, Settings which have video in it, any file explorer...)
Other things needed to take into considerationn:
Gallery app is very old(KitKat era) not the new one found in LineageOS 15.1
The boot time is more than 5 minutes mostly.(not the first boot)
Digital Wellbeing works if the necessary gapps is installed and signed up to the beta program from Play Store
You can't enable virtual navbar from settings(but you can from build.prop. And if enabled, Swipe Up gestures work perfectly)
I think this should help anyone decide whether or not to install the new LineageOS 16

Also there is a typo in both this and Grand Prime's thread. In this thread the ROM Firmware Required is >= 6.0 (Nougat) which is wrong for sure. And in GP's thread it tells 5.0(Marshmallow). I don't know why both of them have the same mistake...

That's not a typo on the GP thread. I'll need to fix the J5 ones later. Thanks for pointing that out.
The minimum required firmware corresponds to the firmware provided by that version of stock ROM. By firmware, I mean proprietary code such as modem firmware and bootloader that are flashed onto dedicated partitions on the device that can only be obtained from a stock ROM update, which can not be provided, overwritten or overrriden within the custom ROM and have to be flashed via Odin.
With a lower version, the custom ROM might still work, but probably not as well. In the worst case it might not boot at all.

Why no one reads the issues?
Multimedia audio has issues and call don't work, why would you install just to watch Netflix if the audio doesn't work well?
Thanks for your work sir

However i hope we can see a GO version soon

After ~3hrs of testing i found another bug.
If you want to Restart or Shut down the Phone, it stucks at "Reboot.."
Then you have to press "Power + Vol Down" to restart.
Thanks!
I tried to compile the LOS gsi, but my pc didn't like the phh script and i have very limited time to debug why it fails.
No time to test your build right now (though i i'm planning to use as daily driver from the new year), but i got a few questions regarding functionality:
- Do the dual sim, sd card, mtp, camera, lockscreen features work?
- Is it possible to install a new-ish gcam under LOS?
- Also, would it be possible to compile LOS 8.1 and just add the fm radio firmware from samsung stock to fix fm issue?

Hello, Thanks for your reply. Lockscreen, dual sim, mpt, camera works. Well this is 64bit rom it supports GCAM but the camera HALs needs remake for GCAM (you can take black pictures on GCAM)
Almost all samsung apps require Samsung Frameworks but I am not gonna do it.
Hi!
Can you do something with SafetyNet? Because i can't install snapchat

Another question:
I'm still on OREO. I guess the BL binary 4 requirement mentioned in the first post is the PIE BL binary?
So i'd have to first flash the latest PIE stock?
From what i see over at ashyx's TWRP thead, it is possible to install TWRP on latest PIE, but not to root afterwards.
So, since from your answer to wafelciooo above, it seems clear that magisk can be installed, what did i get wrong?

I will probably boot on any bootloader. But things line telephony, wi-fi might not work because of uncompatible firmware.
It's possible to make it work properly on any firmware although not implemented yet.
Bootloader Binary 4?

Look for "Baseband version" in software info in settings. The number in the middle is bootloader binary. For example:
A605FNXXS4BSH1 -> 4
A605FNXXU3ARK2 -> 3
I'll look for it... once my wife vacates my cellphone.

how to return to oreo
Yeah I am think about it too, because there's few to no-help-at-all from the OP.
To go back to Oreo, provided you didn't make a backup of you're ROM you'll have to download a firmware from https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ and use Odin to flash it into your device.

LineageOS is based on the Android Open Source Project with extra contributions from many people within the Android community. It can be used without any need to have any Google application installed. Linked below is a package that has come from another Android project that restore the Google parts. LineageOS does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.
All the source code for LineageOS is available in the LineageOS Github repo. And if you would like to contribute to LineageOS, please visit out Gerrit Code Review.

Is exFAT supported, or only FAT32?
Also, does biometric authentication work in apps such as andOTP?
Either way this is extremely exciting development! Thank you!

1.I use prebuilt kernel so it's only support FAT32, but you can flash this kernel to support exFAT(flash with Lineage recovery) .
2.After testing, andOTP can use biometric authentication.(Only Alipay and WeChat can't use fingerprint authentication}
3.Sorry for my bad English.

Very interested in reports about how the battery is with this new OS!
Can we request a build for the 5 iii as well? Should be very easy, it's the same architecture, and kernel for the 1 iii can be directly flashed to the 5 iii

Yes, you can even try to directly flash 1 III‘s system, system_ext and product image, modify Stock vendor : replace overlay and open/vendor /fstab.default,remove the oem line.

If you are building ROM, use the official vendor and replace the compiled /vendor/overlay folder with the official vendor.
If you are going to port my ROM, please copy the 1 III vendor/overlay folder into the 5 III official vendor.
(Sorry for my bad English)
There's nothing wrong with your English, thanks very much for the ROM and the clear instructions!
