This is a guide that I do not remember being posted anywhere, but if it has been, mods feel free to remove
This is for Stock based touchwiz roms ONLY where the dev hasn't added a custom bootanimation, and instead the stock ATT globe animation (which is a .qmg file instead of a zip ) is present. CM, PA, or AOKP roms do not need this, as you can just replace the bootanimation.zip file in /system/media for them.
First off special credit goes to Androidmechanic for pointing me in the direction of the thread to do so located HERE
The thread has some pretty clear instructions, but apparently some people still had problems with getting it to work, so here's what I did:
1.) Download Busybox from the playstore, open up the app and follow the instructions to install it. Even if you already have busybox from a previous time, a clean install of a fresh one will make this process work.
2.) Download the Bootanimation4u.zip AND Bootanimationzip4u.Samsungani.Only.zip from the thread linked above.
3.) Reboot into recovery and flash the Bootanimation4u.Samsungani.Only.zip FIRST, then flash Bootanimation4u.zip (I'm not sure if it is needed to flash both, but this is what I did to get it working.
4.) Reboot. Then paste any existing Bootanimation.zip files that you may have into /system/media through use of a root browser (ES File explorer, Root Browser, etc)
OR
if you don't have any bootanimation.zip files handy
you can download Boot Animation from the playstore and download and install from a PLETHORA of bootanimations. If you choose to do this follow these instructions, courtesy of XDA user ReelFiles
- install Boot Animations Root from the Play Store.
- Go into the app's preferences and change install location to /system/media/ and leave the default filename (bootanimation.zip) and go back to the main screen.
-. Select any bootanimation from the Server tab and hit Install. (Tablet ones at the bottom of the list look best.)
- Select the installed bootanimation again and hit Resize. Set it to 800x1280 30FPS.
-Tap the options key and select "Preview current" Make sure you like it and reboot.
You don't have to delete the .qmg files that Samsung uses for their bootanimation for this to work, but if for some reason this doesn't work for you, try deleting them and see what happens
Once done your bootanimation should be set! Happy Flashing!

Shutdown animation is located system/media/video/shutdown. There is a shutdown.qmg file. I replaced mine with the stock intl' Samsung shutdown qmg file. Looks much better.
I have a request to make.I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S4 i9505 running Lollipop 5.0.1 and i tried and flashed the file but nothing happened, but the reason is probably becouse i tried this method first ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ection-how-t1897969/post31833122#post31833122 ) and made a mess of things. Now i see only the Samsung GS4 inscription and the blank screen until the device boots up.I want to switch back to the default boot animation but i can't seem to get it back no matter what i try and i no longer have my system/bin folder bckp.If you can point me to where i can download one or you have it and can shre it with me i'll be immensely grateful.
I've a Samsung S3 I9300 with Android 4.4.4: this method works with my device?
And is there a collection of bootanimation here on XDA?
Thanks
anyone know how to go back to using qmg files?
HI all
It's for the 3830 model i'm not sure if work on any other device
Few months ago I finally could change my tablet's battery icons so I want to share with you if you want to try
You need:
-A cwm backup only if a fc appears (then reboot in recovery, advanced restore, restore system)
-Xposed gravitybox module working (it's no necesary but is for avoid the bug appears
-a rom that works (for easy way) I recommend deodexed I cannot remember if works on odexed roms
-Rooted and knowledge about flashing through fastboot (for hard way)
If I miss something I will edit
This mod allows you to change the battery icons of your tablet and works, but it has 1 bug that I don't know if can be solved:
this is the thread where i found how to do the mod
The bug is that gravitybox can't change the color of the battery icon, but you can change the battery icon and this includes the color so it's not a big problem.
I'll try to ask for support at least for the screen freeze, but for now i'll tell you the method for installing it
There are 2 ways:
------->First of all have an updated backup if something goes wrong you need to restore!<---------
Then download my modded apk i'will attach all of they
easy way
is modifying a .zip file (you can do it even in your tablet but is slower and you need like 1.7 Gb free. In computer use zip editor I.e. Winrar)
1.- Extract somewhere in you computer, tablet
2.- Once made it erase systemui.apk and systemui.odex (if is odexed)from extracted directory/system/priv-app
3.- add my modded apk
4.-create zip ( recompile the files that you extracted)
5.- flash it in cwm recovery like a fresh rom
You can also edit the zip without extracting just go to the directory erase the files that I metion below then add my systemui.apk modded and wait for finish then do step 5.-
hard way
is when you don't want to break your head with you computer or you don't have it or don't want to use etc.
1.-locate my modded systemui.apk with a root Explorer then copy or cut
2.- go to root/system/priv-app/
3.- select systemui.apk and systemui.odex and erase them (maybe give you constant fc so you need precision and be patient
4.- paste my systemui.apk
5.- set permissions to rw-r-r (I'll attach a screenshot for how to do it)
6.- reboot and if you're lucky your battery icons will change wothout fc's
If you have fc from step 3.- this will take you a while only continue
If works go to NOTE 1 for avoid the bug and everything will go fine
Maybe hard way is too much
I attach only those that work maybe I need suggestions about the charging animations
problems check post 2
NOTE 2:
tis mod also allow to modules to change the battery icons with an xposed module xbattery themer If I not wrong. Also a theme compatible can change your battery icons maybe is a problem but is not a bug this is normal
NOTE 3
The first screenshot is v1.5 from attached zip then v2.0 and then 2.5
There are 2 versions In v2.0 only changes the charhging anim
Not working?
I'm not guarantee that work on your tablet but maybe there are mistakes
1.- check the permissions don't follow the image the root explorers aren't the same
If really doesn't work you need to restore a backup or flash a non-modded rom
The problem may be caused in odexed roms so you need to deodex and try again
for those that don't have a cwm recovery
If you don't have a recovery use fastboot and flash a stock .Img.gz rom
(turn off your tablet, boot in fastboot)
(fastboot flash system drag and drop file to command prompt, enter)
Or use the tethered cwm recovery for backup-restore your current rom
It's at your own risk and I'm not responsible for damages but it's too much it's only an apk
There is dual boot thread, I'm still without test it but if you have it and the dualboot allow you to go to the root of the tablet you can overwrite the apk for a non-modded skipping the steps but again i'm not sure if this is possible
I have some doubtss......mighht be a noob doubt
Will it work in 4.4.2???
Will i get any problm...later like force closing???

Let me anwer your questions
Yes it's only for 4.4.2
Only if not works you'll have several fc becuase systemui can't start or your wallpaper will be black because system couldn't install the mod during the boot
I posted in post #2 if you don't have cwm recovery
Flash a stock rom in .gz format through fastboot sorry my mistake but as it says will return your system to stock (without xposed and root) so I don't recommend it
Ok:thumbup:
I will test it soon

UPDATE!!!
The problem of the screen freeze is gone and the Google search ring displays so you don't need xposed for trying to fix
After all it was a problem in apktool but I found it and the problem and now work perfectly
But I haven't time to make with other battery icons, for now I'll upload the systemui.apk that I'm using also it have other things but hope you like it.
I am sure that now can be decompiled the app and rebuild with other icons and xml.
Sorry for the fast reply I don't have Internet but I needed to reply that the bug has gone
[STOCK]Flash the enable zip in recovery and see if cm13 bootanimation appears or not.
if black screen appears then flash the disable zip in recovery to get back to original state.
To change bootanimations use ROM Toolbox lite etc.
The idea is to replace the working of .zip animations instead of .qmg.
Boot Sound
Users can also add custom audio to their boot animation.
Make a audio of your favourite with mp3 cutter etc that is less than 20 seconds.
Rename that audio to PowerOn with extension ogg.
Replace this in /system/media/audio/ui with permissions rw-r-r i.e., 644. REBOOT
If you want to mute the boot sound totally , simply move the PowerOn.ogg to internal/external storage or simply rename it to any other name.

I found the file where boot animation is stored on the pixel 4a. It's not under system/media it's in product/media. None of the boot animation apps work. And the magisk module for changing animation doesn't seem to work on my device. When I try to physically put a new bootanimation.zip in /product/media it won't let me says my root directory is 100% full. I always like using a custom animation. Does anyone have any ideas how to get this done?

I have looked into this quickly. I created a magisk module to replace my boot animation but it failed. The internal format of the actual ZIP file is different to previous versions of android.
As for directly changing the file, I have only got this phone recently, but from my understanding, newer devices can not nount their system partitions as RW, so Magisk will be the only way.
When I get a chance, I will be converting my old boot animation to mimic the new format, and give that a go. If that works, I will be including/updating my app TeMeFI to be capable for my/our device.

The magisk module failed for me as well. If you do end up figuring it out would greatly appreciate your insight.
yeah im extremely interested in a solution to this.
it used to be so so so much easier to change the boot animation and boot logo etc. these newer phones are crazy locked down.
I looked into this also a few weeks ago now. I havent tried the latest magisk, and I know previously on an older magisk in oreo, it would play half the original animation then switch to the new one. Super weird. So, maybe if its brought to @topjohns attention (in giothub I think), it could get a fix.
On my previous Oreo phone, I had created a working boot animation change, so I thought it would be a simple task to do the same for A11. Not so... It didn't work. And yes, I noticed the changed location, and also converted the zip file to the new format
So, the weird thing, which kind of confirmed I was probably doing it correctly is that I had a crash which caused a soft-reboot, and on that reboot, the replaced boot animation worked! But, onnay cold boot, it failed and played the normalone. Also, if I went into /product/media on a live system and tried opening (either zip), they would be my replacement boot animation.

Magisk loads after userdata is mounted so you get the stock anim until then. I have modified system directly but the anim still "plays" twice. Not this phone, not android 11.

You are not understanding. In Oreo, the changed boot animation plays from start to finish. It worked perfectly.
You do not need to modify the system location directly on Oreo.

Well you did mention half old, half new?
Before I had this phone, I had a Mi A2 Lite and it played the boot animation twice. Once before userdata was mounted (but not to the end), then again once userdata was mounted. Magisk modules could affect the second one but not the first (since Magisk files live on the userdata partition). I only really ran Android 9 and 10 on that phone, and they both did it.
I suppose the system could have just left the static splash on the screen until userdata was mounted, but for whatever reason, that's now what my old phone did.
I haven't actually watched the Pixel booting closely enough to spot if it's doing the same thing or not
Back to the issue at hand...
I have a read-only device /dev/block/dm-2 mounted at /product but I also see something Magisk-related mounting a directory called product but the path is ... whack.
/dev/B9z84Wq/.magisk/block/product on /dev/B9z84Wq/.magisk/mirror/product type ext4 (ro,seclabel,relatime)
dm-0 is /
dm-1 is /vendor
dm-2 is /product
dm-3 is /system_ext
All of these are (apparently) ext4. Probably these are all "files" on the super partition (ie. the new dynamic partitioning). That Magisk thing makes me think a module should be able to replace files in there... but maybe the bootanimation.zip is loaded before Magisk gets a chance to do that?

But if you read that post, I also explicitly say it was an old magisk. A newer version of Magisk changed that, and it played the new one from start to finish.

I'm on derpfest a11. The first time I boot after flashing I get the derpfest boot animation (a colorful flashing owl) any time after that first boot it shows the Google logo then just the words android screen goes black then the word android again. I know this isn't a derp thread I just thought it was weird that the custom boot logo shows on first boot but not after that. When I check /product/media it's the derp-bootanimation so not even sure where the android logo is being loaded from.
Looking at the zips of the files in product/media, the files are different from normal boot-animation zips. The desc file is different, and there trim.txt files in the part folders. I haven't played with it yet, but would be nice to change change the G one.

I have managed to change the boot logo of the stock A11 firmware, I dont have time to get into it too far right now (im on my way ... socially distanced ... out)
1. I modified the bootanimation.zip to match the new format (dont know if the old format works)
2. manually created a magisc module to replace the one in the ROM
3. Added a boot script to do a soft reboot on each start-up/boot. It appears Magisc does not replace the file soon enough, so the old one plays. even though it appears changed in the running OS, obviously after the ORIGINAL had played.; which I coud not find in the ROM But there is 1 second of "Google" before my animation plays.
I also added a step to blur any area below the quick tiles, and also a few other places, such as in the reboot screen

The following is the format docs. But in itself, the location isn't correct. I personally reversed engineered the existing one using my pre-loved boot animation, and then found this doco.
bootanimation format
It also implies sound is supported.
I added my one as an example that works. its the Nexus prime boot animation. But mine plays faster and for a shorter time.
I used to make boot animation for my device, it worked fine on A10(custom rom) but on certain builds it had the same problem as yours like not enough storage or similar error I don't recall but just found out this post and tried the old files I made and working fine on A11(custom rom)
It's a bit large for a boot animation but it's so because of the gradient colours and full resolution compression of the original video file makes the quality worse. Still give it a try if the format works.
Use mixplorer with root and first copy and backup the existing files and then give this file a try. rename the file after pasting in the correct directory. refresh if it shows no files renamed

the answer is in the post below. I had mine working, now I dont bother, so I would have to scan through my history (part of the reason since I have more pressing items to expend time on), and even then, it wouldn't be a drop in magisk module, but a manually built one..

Whats up guys, I am actually bringing questions that relate to this topic and not answers for now. Does Android Studio have a tool to access & modify the boot animation directories? Or even a tool from Android Studio that helps when taking on this task?
