It is very possible that the volume up key does the job.

Do you mean that it doesn't work when the device has loaded android?
If yes, then reflash the official kernel and see if the problem persisits.
If the problem persists then it is very possible that you have a hardware failure...
If you have flashed my kernel and you mean that you cannot enter CWM by pressing volume up, just press the power on-off key once or two, when the (white)
se logo turns brighter and you will enter CWM.
i mean, i cant get into fastboot mode by clicking the volume up key so i cant flash any rooms
think that i had unlocked the bootloadrer i used the test point method with s1tool( http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1285285 ) it didn't gave me any error message, it looked like it worked fine, tried volume up volume down even the home button and various combinations of it... the volume buttons load the CWM and if i restart holding the volume up key it boots into charging mode...

I can't understand a few things about your case.
Have you already flashed my kernel?
What version of CWM are you running?
To enter fastboot mode you have to connect the usb cable to your device, hold the volume up key and connect the usb cable to your computer. Then the led light turns blue...
i didn't flashed the kernel because i can't boot into fastboot mode, maybe because the test point method with s1tool didn't unlocked the bootloader, but it looked like it did?
i am using the cwm version 5.0.2.7

You can enter fastboot mode, even if your bootloader is locked. You can't install custom kernel though.
Dial *#*#7378423#*#*
Go to service info, go to Configuration submenu and check the status of your bootloader.
If the text under rooting status is:
Bootloader unlocked:Yes
then your bootloader is unlocked.
If the text is:
Bootloader unlock allowed:yes
then the bootloader is still locked.
About getting in fastboot mode now.Try searching the web on how wt19i gets into fastboot mode.
Visit this page also:http://unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com/instructions
mine says Bootloader Unlock Allowed: No
saw somewhere that it means that the bootloader is unlocked?
the only 2 methods that i can find for booting into fastmode is the volume up key method mekes it go into charging mode (it shows sony ericson on the screen as usual then it shows up a battery with a power logo in the middle)and i saw someone say that he entered fastboote by holding volume up + home key and connecting it to the pc, both didn't worked?

I have a stock Jelly Bean 4.1.2 installed on my xperia P handset. I wanted to install the custom rom CM 11 on my xperia. So I first rooted my handset using Doomlord Easy rooting toolkit. Then I copy pasted the custom Roms zip file in the internal storage. Then in order to install the custom rom I need to boot into the recovery mode of xperia P.
So I first tried using Quick Boot but it goes on rebooting to the regular jelly bean OS and doesn't enter the recovery mode.
Could anyone guide me which step I actually missed for installing the custom rom. If a perfect guide is provided I would be very grateful.
press power button + vol up button for 5 seconds... it will vibrate 1 time.. it will reboot.now keep pressing vol down key or power button ((because in some kernel key is different.)) key until it displays a menu in blue fonts.it's clockworkmod recovery.:good:

I tried doing the steps as guided by you. On pressing the volume up key and the power button it vibrates 1 time then I kept on pressing the power button. So then the phone booted in safe mode again and again and then when I stopped pressing the power button the phone booted normally again in Jelly Bean. Is there any problem with unlocking the bootloader. I have received a key for unlocking the bootloader on my GMail account when I requested it on the sony's website.
did u tried with volume down key to enter recovery..? u said that u wanna install cyanogenmod ..so u need a custom kernel which can be found in same zip file of rom named 'boot.img'.& & a custom kernel needs unlocked bootloader. if u have to unlock your bootloader ..u have to search ..it's very easy and can be found on this forum, too(( if not pm me i'll send detailed steps.)).& yes,u are gonna need that key which you received to unlock bootloader .
u can always use ( fast boot ) to flash cm11
it`s better and best ......
any ways u could inter recovery mood by pressing volm+ 2 time`s after the phone vibration ....when sony log show...
its always work
If you installed CMW, to enter it I push about 10 or 15 times, while the phone is turning on, until it loads the cmw

For CWM, turn on phone, when it first shows the Sony logo start pressing various times (Volume - ) key (don't push one time and keep the finger on the key!!) until it enters cwm recovery.

For me it works only with Volume '+'
In CM11 zip, u have the boot.img... flash it using fastboot (doesn't work on Windows 8 or 8.1), then u'll have the CM11 kernel... turn on the phone and when it is starting, it'll vibrate when showing sony logo, just tap the power button when vibrates and will enter in CWM, then just follow the tutorial in CM11 topic.

I got same problem to reboot in CWM mode. Following all recommendations in this thread. Did not work.
However when coming back to one of the Xperia Phone instructions to reboot in CWM, I tried again to follow those instructions given by following links :
Sony Xperia P CyanogenMod 11 Project page Thread on xda-developers https://sites.google.com/site/androdevlinux/xperia-p/xperia-p-roms/cm11-download/
Here are extracts which I strictly followed :
First time flashing CyanogenMod 11.0 your device, or coming from another ROM? You need to be on Unlocked bootloader
Fastboot kernel(boot.img) from the rom zip
Press power button when Device vibrates at boot splash/logo to enter TWRP recovery
Format data and cache
Flash the Zip
Reboot
The "Press power button when Device vibrates at boot splash/logo to enter TWRP recovery" is really the trick to enter CWM mode ....
i installed a custom rom, but due to some reason it hasnt installed properly and not letting me access settings. and moreover i am not able to install CWM recovery as vol - button way is not wrking.

Thanks for telling ! I had been looking for this information for a long time.
Apparently, my service info says "bootloader unlock allowed: yes", I wonder if it means that I actually unlocked it or that the device would accept me to do it.
I moreover wonder how one can manage to install CM or root its device without using Recovery Mode. I saw on your signature you rooted your device. May I ask how you did that ?

It means your bootloader CAN BE unlocked.
To install a ROM, such as CM, you first unlock your bootloader, then move the ROM zip to your device. After that, you flash the included kernel from the zip with fastboot. Then, you boot into the included recovery from the kernel and flash the whole ROM.

I finally found a solution to my problem : I unlocked the device using flashtool-0.9.11's gui procedure, instead of flashtool's fastboot. It succeeded and I can successfully flash anything I want on the device.
I found your rational approach to my problem useful. It helped me isolate a solution. Thanks !

FLASHED TWRP BUT CANNOT ROOT
Tried it with my M307FN and it worked. But GPS and Auto Rotate Display is not working.
Long story short, I messed up and I regret it. I edited the SDK 2 API levels up to get an app to possibly work and didn't think of the consequences of everything else.
I was running 8.0.0 rooted and am unable to get into recovery as the main boot of android is messed up where all apps result in continuous errors and when trying to enable usb debugging in the settings, the settings crash.
If I could get into revovery mode, I can fix it. The issue though is holding power + vol down does not work. I am not sure how to get into the recovery when the v30 shows that conformity screen on boot when the boot loader is unlocked. I was able to get into fastboot mode but on that screen it says i need to enable OEM unlock. Sadly that is not working as settings crash when trying to enable.
Would anyone have any other ideas to get to recovery?
Let me know if any more info is needed.
EDIT: I do have LGUP installed and does see the device. I would prefer not to have to fully reset the device if possible. Can LGUP boot the device into recovery?
What you described (just holding power and volume) will not get you into recovery... the proper sequence (aka the "button dance") is more involved than that. If you're only holding down those buttons, then you're not doing the process... do a search to see what it is (I believe you need to release and then re-press the power button... but I don't recall, so certainly don't take my description as enough info.
You also said you can boot into fastboot - you may be able to "fastboot reboot recovery" to get into recovery... some phones respond to that.

LGUP can get you to Download mode but not Recovery.
You can boot to Recovery (TWRP) with hardware button dance.
8 sec Power + Vol-, and when it shuts off, release both, immediatly press both again (at the same time), and as soon as the LG V30 logo appears, release power and press/hold it again.
Should get you to the factory reset menu, confirm twice with "yes" (navigate via vol/power buttons), and TWRP should boot fine.
Might take a few tries to get the right timing for that

For that, remember the annoying bootloader unlock warning is part of the boot sequence, if you still have that.

@schwinn8 -
I ended up doing a clean flash with LGUP as I need my phone for work and thought this might as well be a good time to update from stock oreo to stock pie. I wish I had remembered the master reset method as that should have throw me into recovery, I was releasing and then holding both power and vol down when it should have just been releasing power and then holding while continuously holding vol down. Along with fastboot, a while back I had to reinstall windows and so not thinking things through, I did not have working fastboot drivers and didn't initially realize it.
Mistakes were made :/
I very much appreciate the reply.
