Can't copy from downloads folder to SD card - Chromebooks

I have a chromebook (HP Chromebook x360) with the linux partition installed (official) on stable channel & for some reason I'm suddenly unable to copy anything from the downloads folder to the sd card using the builtin file manager. I'm able to move linux to the sd just fine but only through the terminal. I can't copy files from there either using the built-in file manager. I have had problems recently with chrome os not being able to read the flash drive, but all I had to do was eject it, & re-insert it. It hadn't given an error when trying to copy anything. This just started a few minutes ago. What's strange is that it copies from sd to downloads just fine using the file manager. When I try to create a folder on the sd, it gives me the same error, but the folder is still created.
[edit]
I just tried copying from Linux to sd again & it gave me the error:
cp: missing destination file operand after 'hyper-plugins.txt'
Try 'cp --help' for more information.
The sd also now says 0 bytes available. All files are still showing, on the drive. I just can't do anything with them.
[edit again]
for some reason, it just started working again on it's own. It now shows the available space on the drive, & I can copy files to it. I don't know why it started working again, but I'm glad it did.

Sometimes reboot the system it's your best friend.

I've rebooted a few times since, but I have an old phone that I try it in & it says it's corrupted, but I wouldn't think I'd be able to see it on the Chromebook. I tried adding the write/remove permissions with chmod, but it didn't work.

SonyEricsson X10 mini 2.1 rooted SD card read only problem

Somehow SD card is read only. I can't take pictures, delete files etc. Astro file manager says "Error deleting file" if I try to delete. Phone reads files but can't modify or delete. Can I remount SD card read-write mode using Terimnal Emulator? It seems that phone can't index files. Usually it took few minutes after reboot, now the phone shows indexin message for a moment and then dissapears.

can the pc read it when mounted on the phone?
is this a brand new sdcard?
try reformatting thru the pc...make sure it's fat32 and not ntfs.
Connected phone to computer and found corrupted folder LazyList on the SD. It was not possible to delete files from this folder. Fixed it with windows command line program chkdsk and removed corrupted files. Now it works fine.

Contents Of SDCARD Deleted

Today I found that the contents of my SDCARD (internal) was deleted. It doesn't look like the SDCARD was formatted because 1 or 2 files were still left behind.
I don't know if this was what triggered the delete but this is what I did prior to it happening:
In Settings I unmounted the 32 GB micro-sd card. The alert said it was safe to remove the card.
I ejected the card.
I reinserted the card. The G-Tablet did not detect it.
I powered down the G-Tablet and then powered up.
The external card was now detected ad I found that I lost the contents of the internal card.
I am using update 3389 with the Enhancement Pack v1.
This is not good.
Was it just media files? If so, then this is a known issue (with stock, as well as mods like TnT Lite and VEGAn).

The DCIM folder was deleted. I also had a folder named "download" in which I had several PDFs and a subfolder with APK files. The xScope folder (with Cache, downloads and Themes) was deleted along with a few more that I do not remember their names.

I have been searching the forums looking for a fix for this and I haven't been able to find one. Tried to search the forums with an advanced search from Google as well, no lock. This is an old thread, but is there any update to this? Running Vegan 5.11, Pershoot kernal. I had a bunch of pictures and video that were deleted, but the folders/containers they were in were not deleted. Thanks in advance for any help.
add an empty file in root sdcard2 called .nomedia

Yes, worked for me. Running Vegan 5.1
When you apply this file everything is supposed to stay and not be deleted right?
I installed VEGAn-TAB 7.0 and had the same problem with media files disappearing (.mp4 video files and .jpg files). Happened when I deleted one file from the internal storage (memory). Next time I came in to the Videos folder on the internal storage everything was gone. Another time happened after I unmounted and removed my external micro SD Card 16gb. Also had the same thing happen with media files disappearing from the external micro SD Card. Very frustrating. Finally put all those elusive media files on my trusty 8gb Transcend Flash Drive and lo and behold, everything worked fine and I could play all those videos, remove the USB drive and when next inserted everything was okay. For whatever reason, the USB flash drive works far better and more safely than the micro SD card. Plugged the USB flash drive into my USB 2.0 4-port hub along with the USB keyboard and USB mouse.
i am seeing conflicting fixes.
some people say to make a file named .nomedia in the root of the sdcard2
other people say to make a folder named .nomedia and put all your files inside.
the 3rd fix i see is to make a .nomedia file in each directory that contains media
which is the correct method.
thank you.

how did you make the file? if you are using windows to create the file over usb, it automatically adds .txt to the end. i suggest making it through a file manager on the tablet.
i have not tried this yet, i will when i get home.

i used notepad but i enabled "show known file extensions" and made sure its a .nomedia file. Even windows sees it as a .nomedia file.
I will try to make it from the tablet and see if that helps.
Thanks,

creating the .nomedia folder with ifilemanager worked. I created the folder then moved the files to the SDcard. I have rebooted numerous times and the files are still there. Previously they would have been deleted.
Thanks.
cool i will try it when i get home. did you put it in the root or in each directory.

My problem is apps being deleted and not media.
I hope this thread isn't getting too old. So I am having similar issues with files being deleted periodically after some reboots, the only difference is that the majority of the time they are apps and no longer media.
Specs:
-Running CyanogenMod 7.0.3 stable
-I have created .nomedia file and placed on root of SD (no file extension)
-I use Apps2SD Pro to move apps to sd card
-When I notice that an app no longer appears in my tray after a reboot, i will reinstall from the market and before the install it will tell me that "this will replace an existing version already installed" which leads me to believe that the app is still there just not accessible.
There were a few instances where some of my ebooks and pdf's were being deleted, but that stopped after I placed the .nomedia file on the SD, but dont seem to see any change regarding deleted apps.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

[Q] Can't update apps on SD card

Dear All
I can't update the apps that moved on SD card, but has no problem after moving back to phone ? Anyone know the solution ? Thanks
I had the same problem. I was able to resolve the problem by mounting my phone to USB. Then delete the file smdl2tmp1.asec in the /sdcard/.android_secure/ directory.
After deleting the file from the sdcard, I was able to install all apps again
you can do two thgs.
1:delete the file smdl2tmp1.asec in the /sdcard/.android_secure/ directory wt he said if not
2:you may try this, go to setting and choose save to phone instead of sd card. this may allow updates.

i can't find the .android_secure folder. does my phone need to be rooted?
finally!
After reading through a million posts and blogs and pulling out my hair, it was the smdl2tmp1.asec causing all my problems!!! Thanks for the post! Of the hundreds I've read, this is the first reference to the right thing.
any other ideas?
I'm having the same problem. That directory on my phone says it's empty. Yet
, I still can't update apps on the SD card. Any other ideas?
Another path
My .android_secure folder was also empty but other sources said there's another folder to look,
./mnt/secure/asec/
this folder requires root access and using root explorer

Cannot mount sd card?

I want to move files to my SD card. I have the Synergy ROM on my T-bolt and everything was working fine up untill today, when I deleted all my music and was going to copy all of my files back to my phone, it didn't pull up auto play when I click mount as disk drive, so I hard reset the phone and then it showed up, but when I clicked on open up to view files, it said "/i: not located" then i did it several other times and i was able to view the file structure, then when i went to copy the same error message showed up. What could solve this problem?

[Q] check fat32 sdcard for fs errors without PC

is there a native android app/script to check fat32 sdcard for errors and fix them?
like chkdsk or fsck.vfat?

I know android checks for errors automatically when you first boot your phone up, it has the SDcard icon in the status bar, you'll see it say checking and then it finishes. Also when you re-insert the SD it will check again. I don't know much about Linux, so I don't know the line you would type from terminal, and I dont think any apps do it for you.

please read topic name twice.
Check for the needed binary at /system/bin. You can use this command:
Code:
ls /system/bin | grep fsck
Surely the binary will be named fsck_msdos, typing that in the terminal you'll get instructions. Note that maybe will be necessary umount the SD before check it.
