Yep. Without it, it's too risky. I never managed to brick a device going all the way back to 2009 with the HTC Hero and I've bricked my 9 at least 5 times to where the MSM Tool was the only option (this despite following posted instructions, two of those bricks happened while doing the exact same operations I did in fastboot that worked before!).

So is the tool accessible for all? I'm currently using a redmi Note 10 pro max. Waiting to upgrade to a good flagship phone with cat20 4g modem and at least a good 5g modem. The only drawback is this doesn't have mmWave. I hope more phones are slapped with an mmWave modem in the future.
So I read that some don't have access to this tool. If I soft brick the redmi, I can always flash a raw fastboot rom and I get back the device, although mostly I've gotta format the internal storage, as this happened recently. Fortunately I have a 512gb micro SD card, and since the 10t lacks expandable storage, I'm gonna miss the SD card. I guess sacrifices have to be made.

So it seems that OnePlus is now using VIP signing with EDL mode like Oppo does. That presumably means the death of EDL recovery like it did for Oppo when they implemented it. The 9 series may well be the last Qualcomm devices able to use the MSM Tool without a technician logging in or someone capturing the login and using it to flash others. The latter has happened with the 10 Pro but people are charging for the service.
The MSM Tool is for when the phone is so messed up that fastboot isn't an option otherwise you can just get a full OTA and flash it with Fastboot Enhance and do a quick wipe to get back to a working phone.

I would be forever grateful if you take the first steps towards getting LineageOS for OnePlus 10T (or the cornerstones that may lead to it).. i love the specs but just can't get used to the Oppo ColorOS flavor of OxygenOS in recent devices (after they sort of merged), besides all of the security, transparency, anti-bloat and performance benefits that LineageOS brings to the table.
I found myself in a dilemma, at the same time being a power user (wanting a level of control that only such a ROM provides) and looking for an upgrade after 4 years on my 6T. Not being able to resist buying the latest and greatest with a new chipset (10T) in place of going for an older model with a well-established development scene.
Right now, i hope the ideal circumstances are present to get the speediest development after a release, like: they were on point with releasing kernel sources, and made an attempt to return to flagship killer roots with the 10T, after years.. maybe they are also attempting to restore the original values from the flagship killer period (being known as a ROM community-friendly brand) as they realize how it benefits customer loyalty and sales. So, the quick kernel release can be a sign of that, and i hope it extends to MSM tool release soon
Btw, how about crowdfunding some 10T's for known developers? I saw such initiatives lately for 10 Pro, during a week there was a start in development activity for it
I'm here for the 10T crowdfunding for devs idea. I just got a 10T. Coming from a 5T and most recently the 7TP5GMclaren, the 10T desperately needs help. This fake oxygenOS hybrid is not the business
My hope Is that a Dev can make a custom kernel to lower the brightness as the minimum brightness is way too high currently. I might have to figure out how to compile the kernel myself if this starts bugging me too much.

Custom Development depends on testing device in the process device might get brick. Oppo has complete control over 1+ in terms of flash tool now requires auth, chances are getting low if 1+ releases MSM for free then yes but its Oppo

You can unlock it, it's just really unsafe. Easy to boot loop.
@andr01dfr3ak have you given it further thought?
Sidenote: im frequently checking this topic.. really hoping some dev saves us from ColorOS hell. It's a shame for a device with this specs to have such a bad ROM and UI, software is the only reason i regret buying it.

Hi guys, I'm considering buying this phone, but I haven't used Xiaomi before
Right now I have a Huawei P8 and I regret buying it, pretty great specs but the firmware (i.e. bootloader, drivers) and software (their Android build) is crap. I recently installed CyanogenMod which is already a huge improvement, but the battery is only 2600mA and it's aged, so I don't even get a half day of medium high usage (watching videos, web, etc)
What I would like to know is mainly about the MIUI business
Huawei emui is crap, so please tell me whatever you want about Xiaomi's one
Also should I get the mtk or the sd version? Are there any other differences?
Is there anything you dislike about your note 4? I didn't do my homework before buying my P8, so please be honest with any problems you have with the phone
Feel free to ask me for clarification or additional preferences if I've left out anything
I feel I should mention that I'm a power user
I will definitely want to root my new phone, probably Xposed too, and if I don't like Xiaomi's ROM, then I'll probably use lineage OS
On that note, how easy is it to do the above? Should I be satisfied with MIUI?

You can play with your phone whatever you want, there are tons of roms available right now, rooting and flashing is easy, but I think unlocking the dayyym bootloader might take few days.
If you don't like Miui, you can always switch, Infact i dont like Miui its sucks for me. I left Miui like long ago, I won't be reverting to Miui anytime soon.
Its depends, some of em likes Miui, most of em' don't, custom Roms FTW!!
Battery is great, camera is also good.. [sorry I dont take photos, I dunno about quality ??]
Go get it, that's all I'd like to say!
Careful it has two variant; Snapdragon and Mediatek SoC. If you're custom ROM's addict, pick the SD ones.

I'm very much the same, almost never use camera. I've heard MIUI has beat features, like the double account thing. But you're right, if I don't like it there's always another ROM (in which case the Snapdragon would be better since more ROMs)

Yes I noticed from browsing the forums, but I mean I'm generally very content with Cyanogen, so I don't think I need too much variety.
The having to wait to get bootloader code sounds similar to Huawei, but what a large portion of Huawei users didn't know about was the website that let you fill in your details and instantly get a code (Huawei website, not shady stuff)

Well, I got it.
CM is dead and LineageOS is the new CM now.
But but.. If I were you I'd like to choose SD variant over an MTK one, because of development.
The stable Roms you get, when EOL of a device then there might be newer android versions via custom roms, where as MTK variant stuck, if you look in the MTK variant roms, kernel sections, you'll get it.
check on miui website for locked bootloader and you will definitely avoid this great but due to lock phone.

As for all the others who read this, here is a little more explanation:
He is the technical chief officer of zte and stands in direct contact with the dev team. He is also the reason we got the zip for disabling system write protection in the first place. VoLTE should work on any of the big Oreo ROMs. WFC is hit or miss (even on stock ROM). I'm assuming Oreo is gonna be the last android version we can install and still have these things work (unless some dev out there finds a way to get past this roadblock in the future). Either way, I kinda doubt ZTE would provide any further updates for us beyond Oreo. I'm assuming that the response given in the OP meant that they would fix everything that's still broken and missing on 8.0; not begin development for Pie (especially since the Axon 10 is just around the corner, pulling resources into a 3-year-old phone just isn't a sound decision from a business standpoint).

It is if ZTE expect some form of customer loyalty on future purchase decisions. Would you buy the Axon 10/11/12 etc. based on your Axon 7 experience? Yes they had disruptions from trade sanctions etc. but that's not the consumers fault and imo ZTE should be doing everything they can to restore faith in their brand.
They're basically starting again.
They need an affordable flagship like the Axon 7 was. If they don't, it will be hard to gather enough sales to start a customer pool and try for return purchase later on.
Current customers are wary, sceptical and untrusting after that whole fiasco and rightly so.

They just need to copy and paste the Axon 7 with newer specs.
Maybe bumping it to 6" in order to have more internal space would do the trick.
I still can't understand how did they think that the Axon 9 Pro was a good idea. They litterally took all that was great about the A7 and...deleted it.
Now...a bit of an on topic question. Instead of releasing 8.0, could they not enter the Android One program with it...especially since they were aiming for stock experience?
Maybe it's been asked before, but what are the implications of entering the AO program, because IIRC, I may have read some time ago something about a partition not existing on the device and ZTE not gambling with a large release, but I can't remember specifically?

The vendor partition stuff is something else entirely. Some people believed that ZTE would bring Treble support to the Axon while that made very little sense (Treble is a requirement for phones that SHIP with Oreo and above, but it's optional for Oreo, and its main advantage is it makes it easier for OEMs to update major Android versions). It was developed by djkuz and NFound eventually anyways, but only because of the generic ROM benefits
I don't think you can simply slap Android One certification on the middle of a product's life, but even if they could, it would make absolutely zero sense for them... Why be commited to security updates and newer Android versions on a phone that has surely stopped giving any revenue since long ago? Plus I'm not even sure if people prefer stock Android to stuff like One UI where you have a bunch of options
Do not expect to much from ZTE for the Axon 7. Until now they did not release a stable OS and it will not change for the next update.

Marshmallow and Nougat were perfectly stable, if not the chinese versions. i'd say that counts.
The important thing is them fixing Daydream because it doesn't only entail adding daydream back, to run it properly you need to have thermals and the kernel properly tuned. Daydream should put the phone at ~1.3 GHz but I believe they'll have to mess around to make it work as intended anyways
plus all this is useful for LOS
Marshmallow and Nougat had a very bad design and UI because of mifavor. Oreo is nice but extremly unstable.

All I'm saying is, @GodOfPsychos contacted this ZTE guy, he said that an update was going to be released, and then XDA'S EDITOR IN CHIEF contacted that guy and got the same response (with which an article was made). They can bail at any time, but it's not like they are promising Pie anyways
I'm guessing you can't see the attached screenie in the OP? I can see it just fine from XDA Labs
We won't get official Android Pie for Axon 7.
The most I read into that is update to include cut out features like Daydream, probably a security update too. Just a finish of what Oreo 8.0 was supposed to be. I don't think we will even see official Oreo 8.1
If they had just kept with the whole "best sounding phone" idea I'd probably already have bought another ZTE. It was the thing that distinguished them in the crowded market of samey-same phones. At this point I'm clinging to my Axon 7 with my tight little hands, and any update to its stability will be appreciated. [Full disclosure, I'm running the GSI Liquid Remix unofficial build of Pie, but if they do update the official Oreo and get it rock solid, I could see downgrading just to be on an official ROM.]

Hi I'm coming from the Samsung Note 8 and I'm familiar with rooting but for some reason, I'm having trouble installing Omirom on my OnePlus 7T Pro. Unfortunately the thread is not for noobies. I've read and followed the instructions My phone is unlocked I have root with Magisk, the stock room with adb enabled recovery. When I input command fastboot -w it erases everything but I get an error in regards to partitions also a failed remote error I'm able to flash the boot image but all other parts of the Omirom I just get error messages regarding it can't find at the address. I unzipped the file and extracted to my adb fastboot folder on my PC. I've tried numerous times and well for now just put it to rest cause as you know setting up your phone from scratch a few times gets frustrating. I was wondering if I can get some help on this thread cause on the original Omirom thread, well you have to be an expert. Any help would be appreciated if not I'm just gonna have to wait for TWRP. Thanks.

I'm very much a user - and very grateful for all the XDA dev support & hard work.
Was looking forward to OOS-based custom ROMs for the OP7TP - is this likely to happen anytime soon and to any where near the level of TLC the OP7P received?
Is the sparsity of cus-ROMs just related to non-availability of a proper custom recovery?
Would love to have xXx No Limits/ Havoc/ Renovate ICE etc for the OP7TP.

Renovate ICE developer doesn't have 7T/Pro so he can't test. But he said he might add support if he can get testers.
(I might be wrong, he said it in telegram.
It's extremely stupid by OnePlus, to not keep the whole 7/T series on the same OOS base, since our internals are basically identical. I mean we have same kernel base.
If this were the case then renovate would probably work for our device. (I'm just ranting might be completely wrong).
For XXX; this might be something

If there's no TWRP by the time OP8 releases it will probably have same, if not less amount of ROMs and kernels (because new processor)
If TWRP supports later, I'm pretty sure all OP7/Pro ROMs will add support for T models because they all are so similar. (Like the kernels)
I myself don't care about custom ROMs, only kernels, and there's plenty of them to support T models.

I definitely feel the pain. This is the 3rd phone in a row that I've bought where it seemed development would be great, and instead turned out to be almost non-existent. Of course, I don't blame anybody here. I just really miss having access to multiple different fun ROM's and kernels. Last phone I had with good development was the HTC One M8, good times... lol.
Yesterday I unlocked my poco x2 and installed miui EU rom but it was buggy so flashed stock India rom and I accidentally locked it back.
I went on to re-unlock the device and the unlocker said you can't unlock anymore devices this moth, even though it's the same device, rom, mi account but it treats it as different device.
poco very much like to call themselves developer friendly but they aren't. they are pretty much like apple and in this case, they make sure to add small hurdles in your way so you can't tinker much with your device.
these are some of the examples
1. developer mode is harder to unlock. takes 3-4 sec of continuous tapping instead of 3-4 taps on stock rom.
2.initial unlock restrictions of many days.
3.locked EDL mode
and now
4.can't reunlock in same month? Wtf?
they can very much call it "security" measures.
but all this makes me feel that I don't really own the device and borrowed it from the company.
I have so many xiaomi devices in the house, personally used 4 before
was really loyal fan but now I think it's time to switch
lets see if they reply back

True you are friend.
I think there's no security thingy since its bootloader is unlockable.
Xiaomi is doing just annoying things.
My next phone will be oneplus.
Edit : Yeah I meant unlock wait time. It's meaningless at all. Xiaomi should change it to oneplus' way.
Buy a phone and unlock it on that day.

I'm not sure but for the "waiting period thing" they gave the reason of security in past.

I don't know which EU rom you downloaded. But mine is working great. I am using the one for K30 (20.3.26)
Just switch the phone.!! Go ahead..!!.
Devs-friendly does not mean it is easy for stupid people. Change quickly. Before it became hard-brick because of your idiot.
Not developer-friendly, true. But it's kind of your fault for locking the bootloader while flashing the stock rom. This phone is very frustrating to get around unless you know how to do things.
1. Developer mode unlock method is same as AOSP in miui, nothing different there.I think you somehow remember enabling usb debugging option which has 3,4 seconds of 3 popup screens to enable and i find it useful because so many people in android community just edit the stuff they shouldnt even play with, resulting in having problems, they just tell the problems and list what could happen in that 3 popup screens.
2. Initial unlock thing have some sense in it, let me explain.I am living in turkey and xiaomi as official seller just start selling here since like 2 years ago, before that there was no official seller.(still we prefer resellers because of price difference) So what happended ? We had to buy from random people who import phones from china directly, which buy them from another random sellers in china.and guess what in this process they used to add random modified miui versions(not talking about miui eu) which resulted in security issues, hijacking bank accounts etc or not getting any updates at all ! so by adding this waiting time they force the first seller to keep 2 weeks minimum to unlock it to add custom rom, which they dont, resulted in mostly unmodified devices and guess what most user base of xiaomi are not developers or ROM swappers, there are people who just buy the damn device to use it which dont even know what bootloader is.They prefer a secure, unmodified device which gets updates on time. This waiting time served its purpose.Yeah i can agree its implementation method should be better, like same wait time for all devices not random but thats another discussion.
3. Locked EDL mode, yes you are right.I used oneplus devices before and they are better in developer friendly manners, but this doesnt mean xiaomi is not.in comparison to other android brands, in my opinion first company is oneplus then xiaomi.
4. See there is the problem here, dont get me wrong but if you did know what you are doing or messing with after using 4 xiaomi devices you would and should be able to uncheck the right down cleand all box on miflash tool and becareful when using it.If as a flashy user after 4 device you still can accidently lock the bootloader, you shouldnt be messing with device, the waiting time will be a lesson for you to learn more and never do the same mistake again and be careful next time.
I can understand that waiting is a little boring etc, but keep in mind in a community where huawei after that many years locked bootloader of their devices permanantly(except unofficial ways) you cant open bootloader,or samsung disabling knox and etc, you should praise a brand when it serves you good devices with less price with ability to use custom roms,camera2api etc.
By the way in comparison to oneplus, xiaomi is much bigger company and community of users in oneplus are mostly android geeks who knew what cyanogenmod was, there are even people who didnt hear oneplus name even once in their life, but xiaomi is more general purpose brand who is way more popular among normal smartphone users, so they serve 2 different community in my opinion, with less users base in common in general.
Feel free to swap to any other brand if you are this much unhappy

I just wanted to quick flash my device because I was in hurry. I'm a MIUI hater but still a MI fan. haven't used mi flash for so long that i forgot about it. Yes, it was my mistake. but I’m talking same device, same mi account and same rom here. when you have such a big user and device database these things not supposed to happen. I do get, why they do the stuff they do but all that togather builds up in so much frustration for someone who does a lot of tinkering with their device everyday. this is not good thing for a company that calls itself developer friendly.
this is not about security my friend they just don't want people to leave miui
Definitely they are developer friendly. They send phone to talent devs. The thread say it all. Your not a dev. xiaomi dont say they are "flasholic friendly". Obviously you made a mistake and you called it "accidental" and blame xiaomi.

I think the term you are looking for is 'User-friendly" not "Developer friendly", because someone who is experienced enough or even used MiFlash once or twice will know how MiFlash always reverts to clean all and lock. There is no need to be angry over all this, you made a mistake, now you have to wait. That's it. :good:

Hi, i was planning to buy the phone. My poor OnePlus 3T is dying and i thought the GT 2 Pro could be a good replacement. The only thing that is stopping me is the locked bootloader. I searched a bit and i read about the Depth Test app and such. Is there a way to unlock the Global Version bootloader? And there will be any development for the phone? I never had a Realme phone, what do you think about it? Did other realme phones had any community developments?
I wouldn't count on it. Only chinese firmware can be unlocked. Therefore, a significant community is not to be expected.
Edit: Happily, I have to correct myself. It's a moderate miracle.
Why would a locked bootloader stop you from this purchase? For the Chinese version I have uninstalled or suspended unwanted or Chinese language apps using ADB/ADB shell.

I try to keep a phone as much as possible, my nexus 5 survived 5 years and my OnePlus 3T is almost at its 6th birthday. If it wasn't for the community i couldn't have used it for this much time. And then i also want to have as much control as i can on what i own, if i can root the phone i can put an adblocker, i can uninstall everything i want and put all the patches i want.
that;s my concern on this phone. samsung promise a four system support and xiaomi ,oneplus do have big community to have custom rom even after they stop providing updates.(xiaomi usually provide 2 years of update)
from my opinion , if a phone can have 4 year official update is a must.
else we better go with iphone, it can confirm have at least 4 big system update , i don't think other than pixel or samsung will have this kind of long support.
Thanks god I read this
Today you can not even trust OnePlus with updates, a Realme is a no go with.locked bootloader.
Why wouldn't you just buy the global version and not even worry about bootloader's? I regret buying the China variant. biggest gripe was Google pay not working and even tho I got Google pay to work without unlocking or flashing anything there was just too much lacking with the China phone.
now that I have the global ROM flashed it's just gotten worse... Yeah I got my Google assistant to respond but now I can't play call of duty and use a bunch of other apps.
I don't think that would be that case if I would have just waited a month longer and got the global version instead.
If you worried about support and future updates, like others have said you should only expect the 4 promised, if that.
Tbh I'm looking to sell mine and dish out the extra for the Samsung.
If you do buy the phone.. do not but the China variant. Save yourself the headache
I would not get the chinese version but also not the global version with "forever locked bootloader"
Most of the chinese brands "forget" their phones after 1y, see OnePlus 9. Even cheap 3y old 200€ Samsung devices get faster updates than last year flagship...
I'm also planning to buy this phone but, no custom rom and development is my major concern.
I think I'll buy something else.

True, but then again Samsung has tons more cash to spend on software development.
In my opinion don't buy it, i bought it thinking i could unlock it ... Well i would have not done. I had nexus 5 and op3 in last years, i think as you about smartphones

How does it work? You can use it even with a locked bootloader and no custom recovery?
Maybe I am confused but I own the GT 2 Pro global version and right there in developer options is "OEM Unlocking: allow bootloader to be unlocked." Does this not work and if so why is it even there?

That's a bit of a bummer. Paid more for the global version just to find out people are having success flashing the global ROM onto the much cheaper CN variants. Then there is even a guide to flash the CN ROM over the global ROM but Im guessing that is just for flashing back to CN ROM on an original CN phone that was previously flashed with global? Meaning we can't just take an RMX3301 and flash CN ROM to it then unlock bootloader from there?

All we can do is email RealMe and keep requesting global bootloader unlocking.
This never happen before so just forget it :/
I think if enough people bombard RealMe with these types of request they might reconsider.
