Battery purchase non-OEM - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am looking for information on how to buy a good aftermarket battery.
I had expected to find a Guide or a Tutorial or at least a forum discussion, but I did not find anything on XDA-Developers or with internet search. My phones are older models, and I see lots of aftermarket brands on Amazon. I have tried eBay and found that those "new" battteries have been salvaged from used phones.
Is there a seller that can be trusted for good, new, non-OEM replacement batteries? Thanks very much for any help!
Lloyd

Well not really its a risk reward game with most non oem brands, Check iFixit website and such
Or look for local repair shops, you can usually buy the part for yourself

It looks like Flair only read the first line of my post before he replied. I hope someone with experience or knowledge of buying aftermarket batteries will respond.

He posted a valid response. Finding a OEM battery for even a newer phone can be difficult.
You didn't give the make/model. Start with Ifixit, avoid ebay, and batteries that claim to have "extra capacity" ie get the same mAh capacity.

Blackhawk,
Thanks for your advice on extra battery capacity. I have four older phones that I am working on, trying to get one that is reliable. (Two of them are the Samsung S4, which has a removable battery. Others are the LG G5 and LG Stylo4.) I have seen enough online procedures for replacing batteries that require dismantling the phones so that I think I can do that successfully, but taking a chance on a bad replacement is not an option.
Are you saying that IFixIt is the most trusted source for non-OEM batteries? Is it the only one? Is it worth spending twice as much on IFixIt as on Amazon? (And IFixIt won't give you the shipping costs until you get to the end of the purchase procedure.)
I do not mean to be critical, but I do not understand the other things posted by Flair. I assume that "Well not really its a risk reward game with most non oem brands" is a typo? And why should I go to a local repair shop and pay their mark-up for a battery that I could probably buy myself from the same source?
Perhaps I am confused? I wonder if the sources and brands of good aftermarket batteries is a closely held trade secret among the businesses that install them?
Thanks for you help!

You can compare the ifixit battery image to other suppliers; it seems they're all Chinese, use the same brand. I prefer ones made in Vietnam, the OEM supplier for Samsung but try finding those.
Use a reliable vendor only. Having to do it twice isn't saving you anything.
The benefit of a small repair shop is they may allow to watch... and learn the tricks the painless way. Many have reasonable prices.
You will need the right tools and skillset to use them effectively. The last thing you want to do is bring a phone to a repair shop in pieces after a failed attempt. A shop also bears the responsibility for any damage done during replacement... or if the battery is defective. Pay with a card to help cover yourself.
If it has a LCD display Do Not get any solvents or solvent vapors near the LCD. They are open vented on the side and suspectable to solvent poisoning which will destroy them. Otherwise small amounts anhydrous isopropyl alcohol can be used on adhesive tapes to make disassembly easier.
I'm nearing replacement time, again, for my N10+ battery so I can empathize. Parts procurement can be a real pain. After watching the repair the first time by a shop I realized it's not that difficult at least for me to do. Going into it blind would've been much more difficult had I not had that real time learning session. Knowledge is power.

Is there anyone out there who can answer the original question for this topic?
Thanks for any help,
Lloyd

You need to check the reputation of the seller before you buy from E-Bay.
And even than you are not sure about the quality of the battery.
The best is to buy the original battery recommended by HTC.
Actually, the best thing to do is, whenever you even remotely consider buying something from ebay, have a friend whack you in the head with a brick. There's a reason why the prices on ebay are so low...it's cause 99% of the products are either advertised as something they are not, or the seller is a straight up scammer and won't send you anything at all. Feedback is useless; there are networks of scammers out there who generate feedback for each other that appears to be legitimate.
If I sound a bit disgruntled, I'm sorry, but so far over the past 3 months I've lost over 500$ on ebay and STILL waiting for paypal dispute resolution to take care of it.

......................although; one can always have a great experience, bar the 2 cars I have bought! (Cars were under £200!)
Ebay is good but you have to do alot of research, just received the Seinheiser CX500 headphones.......fantastic and the world is far away due to the quality.........
Will
That's cool...I know I have had SOME good transactions on ebay, but I just hate the fact that when things go wrong they seem to tell you that they will help fix it when they dont...they need to regulate things more, because there are so many scammers on ebay...i would bet my life that there are at least 100 people gettimg scammed right this second
BTW Seinheiser is great..I've tried those and I liked them
For wired headphones though i use Ultimate Ears in ear monitors...theyre amazing but they cost ALOT
I'm trying to some some studio quality bluetooth headphones at the moment with no avail
Ebay
I get just about all of my phone accessories on ebay. Most of the stuff while cheap does what they say. True feedback does not mean much but I have bought all my extra batteris there and saved a lot of money. $ 12 for a battery there compaired to $40-50 eleswhere. I think it is worth a try.
I second surgex0. When stuff goes wrong ebay/paypal doesn't care.
And batteries - I got some 'new' batteries once that were original branded but lasted 20% my store bought batteries did. I'd stay away.

Extended Battery

Anyone found one for the TP2? Preferably one that does not require a different back cover.
Thank you.
A second question I'd ask is:
If you've got the Euro or Asian version of the phone, are the Sprint/AT&T extended batteries and accessories compatible with the overseas models of the phone?
I am buying this. @ 2800mAh this thing is going to make the TP2 mint. And this vendor is really good and reliable. Tracyandmatt.co.uk bought one for their Touch Diamond 2 which is 2200mAh and they have had no problems with their phone. You get a new back cover for the TP2 with the battery for the price. New back cover is not as flash as the original but hey, much better battery.

Take a look at this site, maybe it is something to use with your tp2.

My main concern with a change in battery cover is the sound quality for the speaker phone.
Any personal experience?

I highly doubt the 2800mAh for this battery. It's simply too cheap to be good. A really good battery with all the electronics inside and a high energy density which is shipped with a backcover should at least cost about 50(EUR) to be cost-effective for the manufacturer -otherwise there have never been engineering thinking and technological knowledge which would reduce the costs but the quality too.
Of course, you can try it and maybe it's better than the original one (it's bigger anyway) but I, personally, would never use it for my phone.
I have just ordered the 2800mAh battery I'll give you guys a full review of it when receiving it, including any effects on the rear speaker sound quality.

well, i've been buying some of this chinese product, you might say some are good, some are bad. and yes, cost for chinese manufacturer is very cheap, i really mean it, very cheap....especially its labor cost....
i bought the same product from ebay, for 27 US free shipping, will give review when it come.
Yeah, I would like to read a review about the extended batteries.
Maybe you have the possibility to check the milliamps hour (mAh) with a device, to see if it really has the 2800 [mAh] the manufacturer states

Can we change our batteries?

Like the title says,
is it possible to change our batteries...is it soldered?
Are there any manufacturers selling bigger ones?
greetz Emil
i believe not....
Would take some doing but yes!
There is an enclosed sealed lith battery once tablet is opened. Here in Korea I have taken an enclosed laptop battery it was opened and battery replaced. In an hour for roughly $30 U.S. lucky me. In the future there might be oem batteries available but who knows if worth the effort and mulah. At least you know it can be done.
It is possible, if You absolutely have to.
Look at these Pictures:
http://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Sony-S1-SGP-T111DE-S-Tablet-MID.61920.0.html
I guess the problem would be finding a replacement battery.
thx...ok so it is not soldered...you can change it, if the warrenty has ended...

Where to purchase replacement digitizer?

I shattered my digitizer a few months ago and I finally scraped up enough money to buy a replacement.
I've read a few horror stories on Amazon about people buying crappy parts that wigged out.
Could anyone recommend a place that's reliable and ships to Canada?
Try eBay.
In ebay there is only one seller. Costs US$40. I would like to know where to buy it too. Got a dead stripe on my phone like a week ago. Going nuts with it. After fixing, im thinking in selling the phone, while it still holds some value.
There are many sellers. Search for "Atrix 4G". Don't include digitizer, screen, etc.
I found 43 different auctions when doing a search for "atrix 4g digitizers" so theres more than one. Here is a link to what would be the easiest option as from experience just replacing the digitizer is really hard.
http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=251157089339&index=2&nav=SEARCH&nid=84283479181
Thanks for quick responses everyone.
I was hoping you guys could weigh in on what criteria should I buy the digitizer (with frame)?
I've seen a lot options and it's kind of overwhelming. Some are used, some are third party and some are straight from the factory OEM.
Has anyone worked with third party parts and found a drop in performance?
Experienced people recommend not bothering with 3rd party c**p (not worth the trouble) and only ever getting pure OEM.

Where are the nibs?

First, who makes a decent replacement nib?
Second, why doesn't Samsung sell replacement nibs?
Third, why does the S7+ only come with one?
Fourth, why hasn't Samsung done anything to resolve the confusing mess they created surrounding pens and nibsr? Seriously, if the S7+ weren't such an awesome tablet, I'd dump it in favor of something with better support. I could almost hear the frustration in the agent's voice when I called Samsung, "Oh, no! Not the nib again!!!" And since they can't sell me nibs, they suggested that I buy a new pen. That amounts to $60 for one nib.
Help an old man understand all this, please?
These?: B08HVNVND1
Amazon. Cheap. They're nothing special; the OEM ones are just nylon. As long as the replacement are the same dimensions you should be ok. Nibs are generally very long lived.

Thanks for your reply, blackhawk. While I appreciate you taking the time to respond, it doesn't solve the equation. There must be a go-zillion nibs on Amazon. Most of which have very poor reviews. And to be certain, the OEM nibs are not just nylon. The tips are of a very distinctly different material which gives it a rubbery, grippy quality that is very different than just nylon.
Right after I posted this query, it became immediately obvious that I'm not alone in this endeavor. I didn't bother to count how many times this topic has been created. But I am by no means the first.

OEM ones are nylon, pretty sure about that. There are different types of nylon as well. My N10+'s came with 2 replacement nibs and extractor; Samsung* should have done you the same favor. Still on the original nib.
First hit I got on Amazon had a 4.5 star rating. Of course that's no guarantee it is the same.
Try ifixit. They are now partnered with Samsung.
*Samsung tech support is horrible. Been like that for many years
I did not know ifixit had partnered with Sammy. That's good to know. Thanks for the education.

They still don't seem to have OEM batteries at least for the N10+. It seems they started with more recent Samsung releases so bare that in mind. A lot of the junk coming out of China is well, junk.
Maybe Ebay. A crap shoot. Throw money at it until you find some that work. That's how I handle it. A learning curve, such great fun... not.
Is it any wonder I have no desire to buy a newly released Samsung? I know better... I know Samsung Samsung has always been hit or miss; the last 3 years for their flagship phones have been misses, some are epic fails at that.

I had to chuckle at that. Ironic because the S7+ ain't exactly new. Yet there's a small army of us looking for nibs that are OEM or at least close.

Last Samsung I bought was another N10+ a year ago. I have two I bought new. These are great devices; Samsung is very capable if they get their rabid hamsters on the same page in the same book. Otherwise especially recently, they are fubar.
I gave up on OEM batteries for the N10+ and now just make sure it's rated for 4300 mAh. Some on Ebay are selling used original batteries... yeah that will get it.
"Used original"
Hmm... What's wrong with that picture.
