Hello lovely community,
I'm getting sick and tired of the stock MIUI launcher. I want something more simple, but the big issue for me, is the ability to use gestures.
I've tried third party launcher along side Fluid Navigation Gestures app, but I don't think it's smooth enough. And it's unrealiable, because the app might crash at some point.
My question is: what's the best solution to this problem?
I am willing to install a custom rom, in case that solves the problem.
This rom is very good.

So I guess that another rom fixes the problem? Are you able to use third party launcher along side with gestures and no navigation bar?
Also, have you noticed any bugs? I've tried other Roms before, I just want something that is somewhat stable. Not too many bugs.

Maybe you would like to try Neo Launcher. It's part of the foss Neo applications suite, and with a very active development.
You can find it in git-hub, F-Droid, its Telegram group...

I was actually hoping to do Niagara or something in that direction.
Does Neo Launcher provide gestures or does it work with the one MIUI offers?
I'm just looking for the best option for Gesture navigation + third party launcher.
Yes it includes gesture navigation and they work, but I've not fully tested all of them.
IMHO you should give a try k no need to install anything)
Ended up installing Pixel Experience Plus and it worked like a charm. Now I use Niagara with system gestures.
Positive experience! Haven't had any issues so far, and the rom seems to have much more to offer than MIUI.
This phone would have been insane with a decent OS. Such a shame that MIUI is so crappy.

Tried out your solution, but it didn't integrate with the built in gestures. As soon as I install the launcher, it will turn on button navigation and I cannot enable gestures.

New owner of an SG2, which I'm liking so far. Am coming from N1 Cyanogenmod.
At present I've rooted my phone and am running the stock rom with Launcher Pro.
I'm liking a bunch of the features of the stock rom (well trying them out) and am deciding whether I keep the stock rom or move to a custom rom.
I do have a few questions about the stock rom, which I wonder can be answered here:
- With the pull down menu you have the options of wifi, bluetooth etc in the status bar. Is there anyway of changing these options (for example want to remove bluetooth).
- With the dialler, once I make a call it goes into a screen with a bunch of options, like, save contact, etc. Is there anyway of avoiding this screen and going straight to home? (incidentally you are given the option of "voice call". Is this something provided by your network or another service?)
- Autorotate. Is it possible to NOT have it working on the homescreen, but available in your apps?
In relation to custom rom, what do you guys reckon is as close to stock as possible, but with a bit more customisation. I'm guessing a custom rom would be able to deal with most of my queries.
1) majority of roms have that bar modified where you can slide it across and have upto 12 triggers, although you can't really remove them. However with cm7 and miui you can customize that bar to your hearts content.
2) no idea
3) look in the launcher pro settings, you should be able to set it there so it doesn't auto rotate
Give cm7 a try.

Cheers mate. Was using CM7 fine with my N1, guess just wanted to mix it up a bit. There are a bunch of features I do like about the stock rom though.
I'll run it for another week and then may give MIUI a go.
Checkout jkay mods and themes for stock roms in the theme section.
Can do basically what you want Plus more.
Also many launchers (home screens) can set whether to auto rotate. Set it to off in launcher and leave the system auto rotate on.

Thanks, will have a play with the custom themes.
Also, I presume, if I install MIUI or Cyanogenmod, I could still install the Samsung specific apks?

No, you can not install any Samsung apps on CM. (May be you're thinking you like the stock browser so you want to use it on CM, but you can not).

Cheers mate. I note you are using GingerMod, may give that a try as it seems to be the AOSP, with the ability to add certain TW apps.

Yes. CM7 and MIUI are build from scratch and doesn't contain anything related to Samsung. So unlike stcok based custom roms, these two roms doesn't support Samsung apps.

Well, the reason you wanted to try is exactly the reason why so many users love GingerMod rom. It has some good apps from Samsung, like the gpu accelerated browser, camera app, fm radio. Rest 95 % is aosp.
So it's pure google experience,no Samsung bloatware, and we can still enjoy some of the real good apps Samsung made.

heh, would love a cyan-samsung bastard child port. If only I had the skills to do that.
Love the ability with Cyan to tweak a whole bunch of settings, but am liking quite a few of the Samsung apps.
Will look into GingerMod as it may be a good compromise.

There is one more reason why i personally like GingerMod.
It is 99% (or 100%) bug free. Infact, i find it more stable than any official firmware.
Hey,
I was wondering if it was possible to install stock ICS on the Galaxy S 3, while keeping new useful Samsung's functionalities (S-Beam, All Share Play, Smart Stay, Direct Call, Smart Alert, Tap to Top, Popup Play, S-Voice, …).
Actually, I would like to feel I'm on ICS on my GS3, and not on a Gingerbread-styled TouchWiz. I know I could install a third party launcher, but it customizes only the launcher, and not the status bar or the Settings for example.
Thanks !
CM-Zoom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1698273 is probably the closest ROM out there atm, its Samsung ROM with a bunch of Cyanogen stuff included.
I dont know of any AOSP-based ROMs that can run the Samsung app suite yet.

Most Samsung features depend on the TW framework. So few things will probably never work on AOSP based roms. However, for a lot of the features you named, there are alternatives. For instance, pop up play isn't a Samsung specific feature. But overall, what you're asking for will not work. Maybe in time, but I wouldn't get your hopes up...
Mmmh...
Unfortunately, I am not so surprised by your answers
And what about theming ? Is it possible to create a theme like this one and install it on the original Samsung ROM ?

It's written "The Theme is just for deodexed Rom's and is tested on Omega V3-V5!". Is the stock Samsung ROM deodexed ? Even if I am a developer, I dont know much about Android development
If it turns out to be deodexed, I could adapt his project to my needs (as said before, I don't know too much but it's a good way to learn !)
Oh, and forgot something in my initial post :
What bothers me in TouchWiz is replaced apps like Calendar and Contacts. This cannot be solved by theming. Is it possible to install these separately ?
I know I am a little picky and want the best of the two worlds, but isn't that the strength of Android ?

You can install any replacement app you want. Some of them might rely on a certain framework though (e.g. Cyanogenmod) and might not work. But any replacement app from the Play Store should be fine.

Of course, but what about stock ICS applications I am used to use ? Isn't it possible to "extract" them from original ICS ?
ICS (afaik) requires vendors to include the original framework and theming so that apps don't break on heavily modified phones.
The goo.im stock apps should work, but create a nandroid backup before attempting to flash it through CWM
http://goo.im/gapps
You most likely want the following:
http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
Ok. So ICSwiz + goo.im apps should do the trick.
I won't try it right now due to a busy schedule, but maybe in one week or so.
I will post it there my results, in case anyone is interested.
Thanks for your replies

Download the CM9 Rom and replace the desired apps in /system/app.
Make sure you remove the samsung counterpart, e.g. if you want the original calendar, remove SecCalendar (or something) and calendarprovider, add original calendar and calendarprovider.
Don't be stupid and only replace what you really want!
THIS WILL NOT WORK FOR PHONE, CONTACTS AND DOWNLOAD!
There are many threads where they offer a black google apps pack, search for yourself if interested.
I'm hoping a developer can answer my question.
I'm running CM 10.1 Nightly (The latest one 31st Jan) on my SIII and it's superb.
I've started flashing the CM 10.1 ever since the first Nightly came out and have reverted back to Samsung's TouchWiz for the sake of some cool features such as the "Voice Enabled music player" and the "motion settings".
Is there any way I can add those functions to the CM 10.1 I'm running?
Thanks in advance.
well, you can't...
it needs to be ported, what's probably will not happen

I see...but I really loved those features on my Samsung. That's the only reason I ever went back to it.
Ahh well...I still love the CM look far better than the ****ty TouchWiz.
You can always use a 3rd party launcher or use a theme like JB Domination
Yeah but a 3rd party launcher wouldn't give him the motion settings etc.
It'll give him inly the looks that he just stated he dislikes...
he's talking about a 3rd party launcher in a Sammy-based ROM to give him an AOSP feel, alongside with the Domination theme
Add-ons

Again, all I was asking for is the motion functions that are found with the stock TouchWiz and if there's a way to flash them on by keeping the CM 10.1.
I'm not talking about looks, nor themes.
All I want are the functionality that includes raising phone up to call and what not.
You were given the answer to that question. People are just trying yo help you. The only way to have that functionality is to flash a Sammy-based ROM. If you don't like TouchWiz, you can flash Domination theme and use a custom launcher, which will give you the complete AOSP feel
I tried

I tried that. The second I use a launcher it defies the point of having the "buttery" smoothness of either the stock TouchWiz or CM Rom.
Nova launcher + widget locker just made my device slow, so thanks anyway for all your help guys .
Just got it today. Updated to miui 10 but Android version is still 8.1
Anyone knows when pie will roll out ?
Most likely the in the next coming months, i remember reading somewhere it was scheduled for the 1st quarter of 2019

First time using miui and I kind of like it. Only the vibration feedback isn't the best wishes this phone.

Mi-globe is a modified version of miui and they have Miui 10 pie for our device. It also has less bloat and ads removed. It also has face unlock, wallpaper carousel, and fixed hide notch.
Aosp roms are fine. They are all basic android (no skin like samsung, htc, etc) and range in features from pure android source to massive customization options.
I have like MIUI since I first tried it back during gingerbread. Only thing I miss is the app drawer but have gotten used to using folders on my home screens.
AOSP has been a favorite of mine but i have to say that MIUI does feel nice to navigate and despite all the snappiness of an AOSP rom . MIUI provides many apps that i believe that are themed and presented better this way, although i prefer the google integrations rather than Xiaiomi ones with cloud and assistant, MIUI provides some settings and ease of use that i would otherwise not know that i needed or missed with Google. Point is: it's still fast, it has nice features and customization, don't like the Xiaomi cloud services or ads as i don't need another service keeping tabs on me.
Is the Mi8 lite global beta in Pie btw? I have conflicted results in my searches

The 9.2.15 Pie is good. But I was disappointed to see Camera2 Api still as Legacy even with Redmi Note 7 coming as Full.

Hello guys,
I've been using aosp based roms for a while now and I loved the swipe up gesture, with that little bar where you pull it up to open recents, click to go home and there's this little back button also, best navigation system I have ever seen for a smartphone, way better than the full gesture of the MIUI EU.
The thing is, for as much as I love roms, Poco ones are way behind MIUI on performance and that game tools app on the latest MIUIs is a killer.
Anyway, is there a port from somewhere to use that navigation system on MIUI, excluding those idiotic apps from the Play Store?
Thank you very much!
