Excel app request?? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have spent ages trying to find an Excel-compatible app that will work on my Galaxy Tab S8. There are plenty of look-alikes but I can't find one, including Office 365, that fits my very simple criteria. I need to be able to "Save As" XLS and to be able to save to my QNAP NAS so that I can share files across multiple platforms. The apps I have found either want to save in their own format or want to force you to save to a Cloud. Has anyone feud an App that would fit the bill?
Thanks
David

What about LibreOffice?
There are similar suites, I think 1 better, can't think of name.... sorry.

Thanks. The LibreOffice for Android is called Collabora but this doesn't allow saving to the local network.

Business & Student Users: How do you use your Gtab? Tips??

I recently got a gtab last week and have been looking to use it to stream line my grad school and work life. I'm running vegan 5.1.1. So far I use
Documents to Go (Reading/editing/creating docs)
Drop Box (synching my work/school files)
Gtasks (to do list that syncs with google tasks)
Handwrite & Genial Handwriting (for use with a stylus to hand write notes, style trying to decide which one to go with)
Repligo Reader (to annotate pdf files)
Thinking Space (to make mind maps, haven't really used it much but could be useful)
Sketchbook Mobile (for drawings, mostly for fun haha, but could be good to draw up a quick diagram)
Thumb Keyboard (alternate Keyboard with lots of customizations for better use on tablets)
iDisplay Wow this app is amazing, allows you to wirelessly use your gtab (or any android device) as a second monitor for your comp. If you have a case with a stand, or an independent stand, you'll really be amazed at how useful it is
How do you guys use your tab for Business or School?
What are some other useful or productive apps you guys use for business or school?
Also, can anyone recommend a good solution for handwriting notes on the gtab? Genial Handwriting and Handrite both work pretty well. MaplePaint seems alright, but not good for longer sessions. Most of the paint apps fail for this reason.
Anyway, I just thought this thread could be really useful for the Enterprise and Educational users. I'm trying to get to the point where I can use my laptop less and less, that way I don't have to carry it with me to class or meetings.
You hit a lot of the good ones I like. Checkout Springpad for an on the fly catchall note/reminder/organizer app. I really like Business Calendar. its a paid app but looks great on the gtablet. I sometimes use mNote for the quickest possible text cloud notes (like stuff i dont need in a word doc or springpad).
Titanium Media Sync is a great app for syncing a folder to your Dropbox account. Its the app dropbox should have been. careful on the first sync though - make a new folder in dropbox jus for this because it will erase the folder and make it identical to the one on your gtab on the first try. i lost a whole day if shoulder notes that way.
I think thats the stuff i go to daily. Thumb Keyboard is a great keyboard that is optimized r tablet use. you can customize where the break is, and how tall the keys are.
Oh yea I forgot to put thumb keyboard on there. I completely agree, makes typing on the tab way more bearable. I'll check out the other ones you mentioned too

I don't do a lot of heavy lifting on the gTab. I have a beefy laptop that has enterprise apps I use for work and use LogMeIn Ignition on my gTab to remotely access my work laptop to do "real work".
Yea the gtab can't replace a laptop (no tablet as of now can). Like you I still need my laptop for the more intensive tasks. I guess a better way to think about it is rather than replace a laptop, I'm looking to better incorporate the gtab into my workflows that way I can use it for the tasks that don't require a laptop.
Another app to add to the list "Idisplay", it allows you to use your gtab as a second monitor and works insanely well. No chords needed. Its been incredibly useful when typing while having another document open to reference.
any of you know of a good pdf reader like adobe but with bookmark option?
Great list, I'm going to have to try out that iDisplay!
I've also been searching for a good stylus and note taking application to replace onenote... anyone find any comparable solutions?
I use for fun at this moment
Wuala-for password protecting mu cloud files
Team viewer-for remote dedktop access
Touchdown for full exchange sync
Lazy droid to easily transfer files beteeen computers and tabs
World mate live-for tracking my travel
For business use, I like to have lots of calendars all integrated into one, and Executive Assistant and Business Calendar are two apps that help do to that.

For stylus notes i've been bouncing back and forth between "genial writing" and "Handrite". Genial is prettier, but handrite seems more functional
RE: Business Presentation
Hello...I want to use my gtablet for business presentation...I want to hook my gtab to the TV to show my presentation...is there a special cable and application to do this? thanks
I set my gtab up for work. Some of my favorite apps are:
VPNC Widget for connecting to our Cisco VPN.
CifsManager for connecting to Windows file shares.
Quickoffice for viewing and editing Word docs and Excel spreadsheets.
Password Safe Pro for storing user IDs and passwords.
Daris
Foxit reader beta for android is out! I have been test-riding it and works smoothly so far. The ink annotation capabilities are better than repligo in my opinion, plus this is free! Got it directly from the foxit site (could not find it in the market):
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/products/mobilereader/android/
Enjoy!
As an instructor, I've loaded my lesson plans on it and use Docs2Go to read them during class. I've also used androidVNC to control my desktop and server. I've used netstat and other network tools to monitor network traffic during my class. And have used ConnectBot to access my UNIX server.
And of course I use it for entertainment purposes after class as well.
Jerome,
If you had the Malata dock, you could just use an hdmi cable to connect your Gtab to a tv. I'm not sure about other adapters, but you might be able to plug an RCA via the headphone jack. I haven't tried that, I might when I get home because I have one of those for my vibrant phone and that works.

I agree. I commute everyday for work and don't want to bring with me corporate laptop. What I do is leave the laptop in my office and bring home/clients my gtab. It works fine if you only need mailing, browsing, reading,... (simple tasks). Office productivity is limited. I have tried all office suites for android. Powerpoint will only allow to read, it's impossible to edit. As for excel yesterday it took me 1 hour to make some easy spreadsheet calculations.
To all business users, I must add that android has some connectivity issue when it comes to corporate wifi. Like many other people, I'm not able to use my company's wifi PEAP network (sadly my workmates with ipad have no issue!!).

Have you tried writing a wpasupplicant file to connect to PEAP? The TNT settings framework doesn't have the option but i believe the hardware supports it.
Thats how i connect to my university's secure network.

[Q] Office Documents

I am considering buying a Flyer, and was wondering if somebody could try something for me please?
I've heard that you can edit office documents on the flyer, and was wondering if
A. It was limited to Microsoft Office,
B. Can you use drop down menus etc. setup in a spreadsheet,
C. Does formatting carry over directly from a P.C. or do you lose some of the formatting like most portable office viewers.
If somebody was able to carry out a few tests for me using Microsoft Office, and OpenOffice, I would be hugely grateful.
Cheers.
Steve.
Anybody able to give me any answers?
Well I'll add some info...I have not done a lot of document editing on the tablet, however. I have opened up some word, excel, and powerpoint documents, and it holds up the format well for viewing on tablet from what I have seen. The software used is polaris office. Editing abilities for powerpoints are severely limited. You can move stuff around and edit text. I am not seeing an obvious way to add items. Excel is similar in limitations. Word limits things to simple text editing (bold italics underline). Overall I'm going to say it is mostly just suitable for viewing these things, unless the document is very basic.
My other advice is to head on over to a best buy or sprint and try some of your files out first hand. They may let you plug in a sd card, or if not, throw a few files up on dropbox and download them to the tab in store. I did that to see how powerpoints would look on it, which was my main concern.
Cheers johnchad14.
I'll give it a try.

Office Suite Pro 5 - On Sale for $3

I've been using Office Suite Pro 5 on my Prime for a while, and I really like it. It runs smooth, it reads pretty much all types of Office files, and it has Dropbox/Google Docs/Box support as well. It is on sale on the Market for $3, down from $10-15 normally.
Play link:

I can't buy it, because Google don't want my credit card i don't know why
Was just going to post this. Have been messing around with the trail version and it seems like a very good app. All keyboard shortcuts seems to work, and works with .docx and .xlsx.
Anyone know for excel if there is a way to drag the cells you want for a function? Like type in "=sum( " then be able to drag the cells you want?
Since you guys have been using this, can it autosave? After losing countless documents at this point, I cannot use my TP until there is a program that can.
Next, if I press enter on the keyboard in excel, will it actually enter the data in the cell like on a desktop, or will it return a line inside the cell like Polaris?
Lastly, how does the folder structure work and is it easy to organize files how I want them?

The autosave function is there, but a little different than others. It doesn't actually save it automatically, but if the app crashes or your phone dies etc. it keeps "recovery data". Then when you open that file the next time it will say something like: "there is recovery data for this document, would you like to recover it?"
as for the excel thing I don't use excel so can't tell you about that.
And the folder structure is great in my opinion. I have a folder called "documents" that is assigned to a tab in office suite called My documents. In that folder I have folders for my subjects in school(I'm a student) which keeps it nicely organized and I'm no more than 2 taps from any of my documents.
This is probably the best all around office program out there, but I would recommend having a few others for a few other things. Only things I don't like is that there is no export to pdf( I use Smart Office for that) and this is a really individual thing but I wish that ctrl "+/-" did sub/super script instead of zoming in/out which is easily done with two fingers anyways. Also tables don't really work...(I use polaris office to add those)

Enter in excel will enter data to that cell and bring you to the cell below it.

If you have the keyboard dock, you can always do a quick CTRL-S regularly to save your document. There is also a convenient Save button on the screen that you can tap regularly as well. This may not be as good as autosave, but at least they make it easy to save your documents.
Missed It
Dang I wish I would have seen this sooner. The price is back up to 14.95. You snooze you loose I guess

I love the latest update for the word processor. Page View always set QuickOffice Pro HD apart from the rest for me. It was definitely a steal at $3. The advantage this has is the formatting tools always being present on the page. Makes everything so much easier.

[Q] Need App For PDF Sheet Music Set Lists

Hey guys... I am looking for an app for my Galaxy Tab 10.1 that I can use to build a set list for sheet music. I have friends that do this on ipads but haven't come across anything for Android tabs. All my sheet music are scanned or created PDF documents so really I just need an app that I can build a "playlist" of sorts from a database or a folder full of PDFs. It would be nice if this app indexed the PDFs so it would be easier to find the songs that I am looking for. In the end, I want to be able to flip from PDF to the next PDF within the app in the order that I setup.
Any suggestions?
Maybe just use a file manager like Astro?

I have that but it doesn't give me what I need. I need to preset the playlist of PDF files and then easily click through them as I move from one song to the next. With Astro, it would take way too long between songs to find the right PDF file and open it between songs.
Have you tried Planning Center Online? I haven't used it from the leader's perspective, but it works well from the participant perspective.

I was hoping for an app I can use on my 10.1 tab.
Tell you what, I'm going on vacation tomorrow, and if you haven't found an app by the time I'm back,(end of this month) I'll build you one.

Just prefix the pdfs with its number in the set list, and then just use and regular file manager to open the pdfs in order.
01-Stairway to heaven.pdf
02-ice ice baby.pdf
Etc.

Try adobe reader, and click "home", you will be able to see your docs order how you want it.
Astro, Adobe Reader and all these other suggestions are great for finding a file and opening it but I really need something like I said... a reader that can create a "set list" or a playlist or sorts. I have almost 1000 pdf files. It just wouldn't work no matter how you sort them to be able to switch from one song to the next quickly during a concert. I need something that I can add the 5 or so songs to a list and just be able to click "next song" or something like that when I am ready to go to the next pdf.
I don't think i have come across anything that would do that on Android as far as being able to create a file list to go through. The closest thing i can think of is to use perfect viewer with its pdf plugin but with that you would have to do your own file management externally by placing your set of files in a folder and naming them sequentially with number prefixes. Once you do that though perfect viewer will let you cycle through the pages as if the set of files were pages in an ebook.

Setlist App: Song list + file attachments
Hi!

It comes in both free and paid version. File attachments feature is enabled in pro version.
Setlist Free: goo.gl/TAADJ
Setlist Pro: goo.gl/fgw9XY
Please give it a try and let me know if it feets your needs.

Catch notes is going bye bye

So catch is being discontinued.. I need a legit solid comparable application, keep sometimes doesn't save photos.
Any personal experiences with evernote or spring pad?
I mainly use it to save photos I find on fb or Internet.
Thanks!

I am in a similar dilemma.
I don't like evernote, mainly because they are way too expensive (about 5$ a month is unreasonable in my opinion).
Evernote does not have a true offline option in the free version!
Here are the features that a good note app/service should have (catch notes had all these options):
Web interface and backup/synch (dropbox and web storage services do not count)
Offline editing and full access
Search everything (preferably as you type)
Categories/tags
Password options (preferred)
Reasonable export options is a must so you are not locked in to the app.
No monthly fees for above service (onetime fee only, or atleast a more reasonable month fee than 5$/month)
I looked briefly at the following apps/services and those are the issues I found which do not match my needs:
ColorNote: no web interface
MobisleNotes: web interface without search, no import/export option
Inkpad/notepad: no import/export option on web interface
Note Everything: no sync or export function
I figured I use catch regardless, and just use it for its internal storage options just sucks there aren't any real comparable services.

i have 3000+ notes and im looking at simplenote as a host, syncing with NValt on desktop, and there are a few android clients.
evernote is very reliable but too heavy. also i dont like that everything must have a title, and i you have to pay to store everything local. most of my notes are short and plaintext anyway.
however im having a lot of trouble importing them to simplenote. they have a tool but its super finicky and inconsistent. i think it will be easier to hack the notes into a client db, and then sync them up to simplenote. however this too is proving difficult because i want to keep the create and modify dates intact as well as the tags.
please let me know if anyone finds a soln.
in the meantime, id like to find the datafile on my phone. at the directory above i have hidden files turned on, but still see only media in ./media and one zero byte file in ./cache. where is the text data?
No luck yet

It appears the support pages are still up, abet slow at loading
Code:

I can't see my notes in Global Search on Android
Last Updated: Apr 16, 2013 12:25PM PDT
We have made a decision to not allow for a Global Search based on security reasons. With the option to set a passcode on your notes, we feel that Global Search would navigate around this and violate the notes security.
For example: If you have a passcode set on your notes, yet we allowed for Global Search, any term you search for may return a result, thereby indicating that the searched for text is part of a note's content.

Im currently looking for a way around this as im trying to use dropbox (storage) and dropsync (to sync particular folders)
If this fails it appears ill have to learn how to create apps and create my own with the Catch API
Failing that decompiling and rebuilding it to my specs is prob the final method
lets hope it doesent come to that
As you can see I haven't been converted to the dark side of other apps yet
Me too. I'm still using catch but locally.

Did anyone actually get an email regarding this shutdown? I had a bunch of notes stored in AK notepad which are basically lost forever, and I don't have any emails from catch.com notifying me of the termination - I'm just finding out today.
Maybe they ended up in my spam :/
