I know with the op n200 metro version you could put your T-Mobile sim in and unlock the phone to work with TMobile automatically, I can't find confirmation anywhere if this works with the n20 as well, does anyone here know?
I just tried with a T-mo sim card in Metro by Tmo N20 and it didn't work

Was the n20 brand new and the T-Mobile sim inserted before turning the phone on the first time? I read that's how it works on some older phones, I think metro blocked it finally but was hoping it might still work.

yes, I received the phone in mail this afternoon, Brand new and first boot was with T-mobile sim, no service and Mobile network status showed "Disconnected"
The Boot animation did change to T-mobile on a reboot with the sim inside but still no service
As I was playing around with the phone, I stumbled upon a weird way to get signal by trial and error got 4G and 5G data as well but when Wi-fi connected, data seems to switch back to 2G. Let me know if you want to know how

Sure, here it is:
1. Boot the phone with T-mo sim inside the device, once booted you wouldn't have any signal
2. Go to "Sim info & settings" > "Preferred network type" and choose "2G/3G(Automatic)"
3. Reboot the device, once booted you should see signal along with 2G icon
4. Now go back to "Preferred network type" and select "2G/3G/LTE(Automatic)", you should now have 4G (Texts and data works but call dropped)
5. Now switch to "2G/3G/LTE.5G(Automatic)", you should see 5G network (Texts, calls and data all worked fine)
5G was stable for several hours until I connected to Wi-fi and when I disconnected Wi-fi, I noticed that data said 2G.
Let me know if the above steps worked for you

Did you get an incompatible SIM error, or just no signal? Also, you can't just put a Metro SIM in a phone and have it work. You have to call them and tie the IMEI of the phone.

If you got any signal, then it should work. Try changing the APN settings manually

OP is talking about the other way around, T-mo sim in a Metro device
Nord N200 had a bug where the device could be locked to Metro but worked flawless with T-mo sim.
That bug being patched is what OP meant by "blocked"

Yeah, I got that backwards. But if he's not getting an incompatible SIM error with a T-Mobile SIM in the MetroPCS phone and actually getting an edge signal, maybe add a new T-Mobile APN profile. Should work in theory.

Thanks! Good find! Yes I was able to reproduce the behavior. Also in my case it seems that the 5G/LTE will revert back to 2g after some idle time. But I can use the airplane mode to repeat the process (without rebooting the phone) to repeat the process. I was able to reproduce on another metro phone as well. must be some kind of loop hole.

I take it you're not a MetroPCS customer. Must be something baked into the OS. I wonder if it still has the MetroPCS bloatware since it booted with T-Mobile boot animation? Anyway, there are services on eBay that will unlock this phone through the MetroPCS unlock app. I'm not selling anything just letting you know that's an option if you didn't already know.

It installed the T-mo bloatware and removed metro bloatware as soon as it booted. Yeah, I'm not a Metro customer, I'll usually just leave it alone for 180 days and unlock it afterwards

Ah, but you need active service on it for those 180 days to be eligible to unlock it no? And now that it has T-Mobile firmware how can you unlock it from Metro? I'd download the MetroPCS unlock app from the play store and run it to see what it says.

In theory, it's 180 days of active service but in reality, they've been unlocking 180 days after activation. I pay for first month and then throw it back in the box.
Also, I didn't see the unlock app as part of bloatware, its built into settings > about. It'll pull up the same screen as in Unlock app and we can try to unlock from there but obviously, throws the error showing it needs 180 days of service to unlock and is not eligible currently

On eBay it's 75 bucks to unlock. Thats like 2 months of service and you'd be able to use it in a few days instead of having a paperweight for 6 months. Thats what I did on my old Moto One 5G Ace.

hey everyone, i'm about to buy AT&T Galaxy Note through Craigslist.
seller states that it is unlocked, but not rooted. is there anyway for me to verify it is unlocked?
is it simply inserting my T-Mobile SIM card and making sure it doesn't say phone is locked, enter network lock control key, etc...?

Yes all you have to do is insert your sim and it will either connect, or you will get a prompt to enter the PIN. If you want to use 3G/4Gish though, you will have to root and flash the t-mo radio that's in dev section.
P.S. With most Samsung phones, you can check for the unlock by dialing *#7465625# and it will tell you directly if there's a network lock on it, but Samsung disabled this on the skyrocket IIRC and kept it disabled on the note

When I inserted a tmo sim into mine nothing happened except for it would show the sim phone number under the Settings app. No signal bars either. This is on a stock unlocked phone.

You might have to wait a few minutes for it to acquire the signal.. Is the sim active? Sometimes inactive Sims don't connect, but I put my old t-mo sim in & it had a signal in 20-30 seconds.
Easiest way to tell is to reboot the phone after you put a non-at$t sim in. If it's locked it will ask for network control key .

Yeah it was an active sim. Ten minutes later with no results. It wouldn't work without the APN at all and the Tmo rep didn't want to go through all of that (it was his sim).

It is that "simple"..
If you insert your non-AT&T (including it's MVNOs which are considered AT&T also), and it's LOCKED, it will ask you for the unlock code. If it doesn't, it has been unlocked permanently.
If after doing this, it does show your number under about, but you don't get a signal. This might be an indication of how well the phone gets a signal or how good/bad the signal is, on your carrier in the area you are testing in.
An after thought is to check the versions in the about and research. You may have acquired a hacker/tinkerer's phone that may have played further with the phone's settings and or flashed a different modem. It may also be indicative of why s/he is selling it, possibly faulty.. YMMV
You have to flash T-Mo compatible modem http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1573568
thanks everyone. i bought a note from someone an hour after my initial post and it was unlocked.
i'm enjoying this phone/tablet/phablet/whatever u wanna call it on tmobile. still getting used to the size, but the display is beautiful.
Hey guys,
I am trying to send a S4 to friend of mine as a gift... but its Verizon, and there is no Verizon in Europe. I don't know what to do with it so it would be sim unlock and it will work with different networks because I don't know what operator she will be using. The S4 is already rooted and I am trying different rooms. I am out of ideas because even when I put AT&T card inside it seems like it cant connect to network...so it cant work with ours network how in heck will work with theirs. In the end off all of it like a mention my friends is she, but that kind of she that will break it without even knowing it.
If someone would help me out pick the best room for her that will maybe be pure s4 with out a lot of complicated stuff, that maybe would self-update for her and any network friendly?
Thanks
PS. all that crap that Verizon is saying that phone is unlock free its crap. when you out there phone cant either connect to network or have that notification that is not Verizon sim witch is ridicules

The Verizon S4 is unlocked for international roaming. I have a friend who took his Verizon S4 to Europe, bought a pre-paid sim in Europe, popped it in, changed the mode to global, and it worked fine. I use Hyperdrive and have read in that thread about others using the Verzion S4 with European and other international sims. They may have to change the APN, but it should work.

My friend already had S4 from Verizon and when she put her card inside nothing was working... not even text messages... and she had that notification bar still... so idk... cant tell cuz I dint had Verizon phone out there jet.. its my first contract with them and my last I think.. ATT phone are so much easier to deal with..
but for know I need to think of something... for her I know hyper driver but I was using other rom I think google edition with original android? not Samsung edition and it look nice and smooth and easy, something for her but I cant find any room like that with option for international... or I think the main problem is to have option to have APN option so manually I can add network.. for not even ATT cant connect to it...

basically what I need to do to:
1. Make Verizon S4 working in Europe?
2. What rom will be the best for that (self updating, not complicated, could look like Samsung android but I would prefer Google edition for her cuz it might be just easier on long rom)?
3. Does it have to be multi-carrier rom or just the one with open APN option?
4. Any other information I have to consider, since its going to be a gift phone I will not have future ability to look at it at least for know so I need something that might have chance to run smooth for couple months.
Original S4 with nothing done to it, pure out of box. dint work that well, was not able to send messages and they count add new APN. In the end of the story the phone was stolen... so I know I have to make this one work here before I will send it there...

"I am not saying u are wrong". Actually, yes, you are. However, whomever tried this gave you bad info, I was tempted to ignore this (ignorance is bliss), but in case someone actually believes you...
My phone is stock, rooted. Verizon Galaxy S4, running ME7.
Here's what I just did (I tried this again just to prove you wrong...)
I inserted my GoSIM (ekit, Jersey Telecom) SIM, GoSIM has pretty good European coverage, good prices.
The phone comes up with a "Non-Verizon SIM" (this SIM card is from an unknown source") warning. Ignore that.
Menu/Settings/More Networks/Mobile Networks.
Tap on Network mode. Select "GSM/UMTS". When it asks you "System select" choose Automatic.
You've got to disable Global mode since that will prefer CDMA, which is still working for you in the US in a VZ coverage area. GSM/UMTS disables CDMA.
Now, click on "Access Point Names". The VZ LTE one shows but is now greyed out.
Click on the Menu soft key, Click on "Add new access point". That's now enabled. (If you try this with a VZ SIM installed, that menu will be greyed out, which is quite reasonable.)
Fill in the APN, hit save. Now you can select that APN.
Mobile data is now enabled. It reads "AT&T UK" as the network for me, which is reasonable since I'm using a UK SIM.
As several people have said, this phone is unlocked out-of-the-box. It doesn't matter what ROM you run, you can use whatever GSM SIM you like as long as the network bands that the GS4 supports match what your provider uses.
I don't know if there's something in the stock ROM that blocks US domestic carriers (t-mobile, at&t); that's possible, as VZ has done stuff like that in the past. That's not what you asked, however. At least in my case, a non-US SIM works without anything special to do.

That's something I can't answer, but it's very possible that custom ROMs won't display that noise. Unfortunately, that'll mean rooting it, installing SafeStrap, then experimenting.

The phone is SIM unlocked, so any ROM will be able to work with whatever SIM you install. In other words, the hardware doesn't have any problem with it, so use whatever software you want. However, I don't know if there's any 4.3 ROMs yet that are SafeStrap compatible.

Wow... Pulling this old thread up to say thank you.
I had previously gotten my phone to work on EU carriers but for the life of me forgot how and have been struggling with this for a few days now.
Anyway, I did some searches in Google and kept running into walls and after a few days of [foolishly] not searching XDA I called Verizon and they told me I was **** out of luck.
Well, here I am, back on good ol' XDA and 10 minutes of searching I read your post which gets my memory clear and I remember to enable the GSM option. So simple.
Anyway, big thanks to you and big thanks to the community as always.

Gee, I betcha it'll work a lot better with that mode enabled here in VZ-land.
I'm on AT&T,but just bought a rooted S4 off someone with a Verizon ROM on it. Would I just need to flash a AT&T ROM for the S4 to be able to get the SIM card to work with AT&T?
Any help appreciated.
Same here. My friend gave me his S4 today and it is Verizon and running on the stock ROM. However, I am on AT&T. From what I hear this phone comes factory unlocked so you just plug in the SIM and it should be okay. Is there anything else that I need to know if I want to use this phone as my main?

After a brief visit with AT&T today, they installed a SIM card from their carrier into my phone, but it would not get speeds grater than EDGE at the time. 3G may have been possible, but it didn't see it right away. Also, they had to update the APN settings in the Settings -> More settings -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names. Lastly, after searching the internet, Verizon carrier locks the GSM in the states. In other words, they make it so you can use GSM OUTSIDE the US but not allow AT&T or T-Mobile SIMS to be used in their devices. This is a carrier lock, not SIM lock, so they can get around the whole "well, our phones are sold SIM unlocked" bs. After calling a level two tech support, he told me that there is no such thing as a carrier lock or SIM lock, and he could not give me a code. The phone was able to make a voice call and send a normal text, but data sucked.

Sorry to disagree, but my SCH-i545 works on the AT&T network with an AT&T SIM installed.
I only get Edge because that's the only band that VZ and AT&T has in common in this area. Swapping out a SIM isn't going to fix that.
What you're finding about GSM locks applies to pre-LTE phones. The LTE phones are not SIM locked, aren't carrier locked. Period.
I have a strange problem. I bought a Verizon LG G3 from someone and I put my att straight talk sim card in it after verifying with verizon that the imei is clean. It works fine until you restart it then it has no service. It will still have global selected as well as the apn setting I entered. If I make it manually search for networks AT&T shows up but when I click on it to register it to ATT service after a long delay it says it cannot. Also if I select cdma there is no verizon signal either which it had before. If I factory reset it, it will work once more until I power it off and restart it. I've tried clearing the cache partition as well as updating from kitkat to lollipop. Same problem. I have it set up the way I like it now and really don't want to factory reset everytime my battery goes dead. Any ideas??? Thanks in advance, Mike
Another thing I noticed is there is a sim card icon at the top with a ? in it. It is there even when the phone is working.

Get a straight talk verizon sim that way it works perfectly and you will get 4G LTE.
They sell kits at walmart just make sure you get the CDMA 4GLTE kit
Verizon doesn't have good service here. The phone also doesnt show verizon signal anymore like it used to.

Straight talkvzw is the best in my opinoin but if you must have ST Att then I suggest trying a different sim. You have to use a 4G SIM in it so if you don't have a 4g Att SIM it won't work. After you get the SIM make sure you activate it then switch to gsm mode under mobile network settings. Then download the straight talk data settings app from the play store and follow the instructions.
GSM mode: settings/ tethering and networks/ mobile network / network type : global>gsm
Has anyone activated through ESim on Verizon? If you have how easy is it to get it done? I was reading on their site saying Android users should call in to activate the E Sim
First off, screaming with caps on isn't necessary. Secondly I have tmobile and can't get any esim to activate on any network. I've been on support from tmobile, google fi, and samsung and all they tell me is to do a factory reset and I really just don't want to do that. I even did a network reset that didn't help.

Well, def not screaming at anyone I don't know and need help from JS....hmmm, how long have you had your phone? So, you're walking around with a paper weight? It has to be people who ordered the s23 ultra unlocked and activated on Verizon...why is this a big deal? iPhone 14 doesn't even have a physical sim and no issues at all

Is your phone network locked to Tmobile?
@antawnm26 I'm using a physical sim on tmobile which is far from having a paperweight. @cledee I ordered it from Samsung fully unlocked and activated service through tmobile and want to use googlefi as an esim but so far the only answer I get is to fully factory reset and I honestly don't care enough to do that because I finally got everything the way I want.

are you sure you ordered the unlocked version? they were selling the tmobile version directly on the Samsung page as well and it might have sim locked you once you activated.
try a different physical sim if you have one to see if it's locked.

Definitely unlocked. I've used my friends boost sim to verify that after I activated it on tmobile because I didn't want tmobile locking it.

When I moved from my Z Fold 3 (I am on T-Mobile) to my S23U, I moved the physical SIM. Once I set up my S23U, I went through the prompts on my phone to convert from SIM to eSIM, everything went smoothly.
My wife's S22U, I followed the same prompts and the swap was quick and easy.

Tried that multiple times with tmobile support and in store a couple times and every time resulted in no esim and a dead disabled physical sim that had to be replaced. And every time I would do a full network reset and no change. Its literally come down to me doing a factory reset and if that doesn't work samsung has said they'd have to replace my device.

Damn, rough. Well, good luck to you. I am not sure what a factory reset will accomplish as I don't think doing that does anything with the eSIM, but hey, if it does not work, at least they will replace it and try and make it right.
I have Google Fi and eSIM doesn't seem to work reliably. I followed one of the instructions out there for iPhone. At first I thought it all worked out well since you first need to be on WiFi to make that work. But once I went outside of the Wi-Fi zone, I lost the cellular data. Even the Google Fi app was complaining about no data. So that was that. I would also lose the signal all together. I have Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 6 on Google Fi and the eSIM on Pixel phones work without any issues. As far as iPhone is concerned, Google have put steps laid out for that device but it'll only connect to one network and it'll not switch between other network as it does with Pixel ot Samsung's.

Everything else has been thoroughly tested (or at least everything I intend on using) and works perfectly so it's not a big deal to me. If other stuff wasn't working right I'd do it, but right now the inconvenience of not having esim doesn't overcome the inconvenience of reseting a device PLUS most likely having to do it again on a replacement....
I have a Verizon Test Drive eSIM that works, a T-Mobile Test Drive eSIM that works, a Tello (T-Mobile) eSIM that works, and an AT&T Prepaid eSIM that works as well as a physical Boost Infinite SIM (using AT&T).

I got T-Mobile working for me. Just had to call in and give them my eid number.
U1 version, TMO physical SIM and US Mobile (Verizon network) eSIM. All working as it should.
Got it done in less than 30 minutes with first Verizon rep.....now it's backing up from my iPhone 14 pro max
Tmo esim to esim trasnfer from an unlocked S21U to S23U with no problems. I also have GoogleFI sim installed and working as well. I did purchase the unlocked S23U from Google. I called Tmo tech support on the GoogleFi line to have them do the esim transfer.
