It seems that when the stock camera is in pro mode it does not apply Auto HDR to the JPEG image, whether it is told to save the jpeg only or RAW+jpeg. Is that the intended behavior? I agree that the raw needs to be left alone but not applying Auto HDR to the jpeg is disappointing, to say the least, particularly since pro mode is the only place to tame the overly saturated color rendition of the stock camera app.
Unfortunately it's intended behavior.
You can try Good Lock Camera Assistant and disable Scene Optimizer to tame the contrast in default mode.

You already answered your question about missing HDR in Pro mode. HDR does over saturate the colors.
Samsung should be embarrassed about this camera. OP, did you find a way to reduce saturation without losing HDR?
I tried GCam but half of the functionality doesn't work on S23 at present and I want my camera to be easy/reliable.

I don't think that there is any.
You can go with camera mode, but the picture is overprocessed, and you cannot play with it much.
You can go with PRO mode, but you don't have HDR and therefore wide dynamic range.
You can go with ExpertRAW, but the processing of the pictures is somehow even worse than in the base camera app.
You can go with GCAM, but then you don't have access to greater resolution than 12 Mpix (as Samsung is not exposing API to 3rd party apps for 50Mpix and 200Mpix) and some of the features are not working that easily and video mode is limited (same reason as for 50/200 Mpix not available).

I agree. I use GCAM, but of course, it is not perfect. So many decisions in the camera department made by Samsung simply do not make sense to me...
The amazing thing is how bad the Fruit Cam has gotten too.

A few people have asked me which camera based apps work well with this camera. So I thought I would share some findings here.
Essentially any Android app that makes use of a phone's camera will work with the Galaxy Camera, ie will allow access to the camera module and take the picture. The compatibility issues to be wary of are interface issues. This I find is either an app that only allows portrait mode, an app that uses an on screen slider for zooming (the zoom button on the camera controls the volume level in the app), an app that keeps the lens extended making the camera awkward to hold whilst using the editing features within the app and finally some storage location issues.
The following camera and editing apps are the ones I have tested so far:
HDR Camera+
Takes the picture with the shutter button or a screen tap and applies colour processing as desired, but uses an on screen zoom slider which zooms correctly but is awkward to use when holding the camera.
Camera Zoom FX
As above. The horizon level and shake detection work as designed too. However the camera shutter button sometimes takes the picture at the halfway point. Because of the weight of the camera and slightly awkward positioning of the on screen controls, I found myself accidently taking pictures.
Lapse it Pro
Again uses an on screen zoom but otherwise works as expected.
Pics Play Pro editor
An excellent editor but sadly only works in portrait mode. Does not have its own camera, will ask you to choose including the default camera.
Instagram
Comes pre-installed but interface only shows portrait mode, you can take a shot in landscape but the interface doesn't rotate with the viewfinder. I believe this is the same when used on a phone.
PicSay Pro
This is probably the best photo editor out there, it works in landscape mode but the feature that's missing oddly is a capture function. Why this is missing is beyond me. So you will have to take a picture normally then open it up in the app.
I would be quite happy to try out any other camera specific apps if anyone wants me to and will add to my list.

And one more question - can any of photo applications control Optical Zoom by its on-screen-slider (not by hardware buttons)? Or only built-in?
Can you get any app to record slow motion video ( or does it work only in samsung's app ) ?
And maybe little OT: if you could please check little of USB OTG functionality ?
I can confirm that, on a rooted SGC, the OTG works, if Stick Mount is installed. I didn't try it without Stick Mount installed.
The default file manager opens automatically, I switched to the USB drive and could read all contents and open images using default Gallery.

The paid for Pro Capture Camera + Panarama app works with the Zoom button, albeit in a less smooth fashion than the default camera app. It doesn't automatically display the volume slider on the display, as most other camera apps from Play. I'll be checking this app out further so will let you know if there's anything else significant.

Lets you apply some quirky effects to pictures and movies. Zoom does work in about 3 or 4 stages though (emailed devs, they're looking into it).
IP WebCam
Get to use your cam as a very high resolution IP webcam. Produces some very nice video. More for fiddling around than any serious purpose
The best panorama app in my opinion is ProCapture. You guys should definitely try it out. It produces some amazing hires shots and the algorithm seems very smart.
For HDR, IMO nothing beats HDR Camera+ with 'Pure' setting and noise reduction set to None.

Firstly the on-screen zoom slider does operate the optical zoom in these apps, it's not a digital zoom
Camera FV5 Lite
As far as I can tell this is working as designed, there are a lot of features in the app but as they are processing options they should work fine. Zooming once again isn't available on the hardware button.
LG Camera
The on screen button that has a flower icon... not sure what this is supposed to do, but all that happens when you tap it, is the whole screen turns white. It restores when tapping again. Auto flash is selectable when flash is raised but you cannot turn it off. Lowering the flash light will allow you to select off, but obviously it won't fire anyway in the lowered position.
Camera X Free
This has compatibility problems due to the screen size/resolution. Some of the icons merge together, are not selectable as touching them causes a picture to be taken. Adverts cover top part of screen and saved shots don't seem to appear in the gallery. I would give this a wide berth for now.
My conclusion, is that the camera's own set of utilities and effects are far better than any of these third party camera apps.
I use HDR Camera+ as it's more customisable than the built in Rich Colours setting. I use Camera Zoom FX for the props and frame overlays etc, all other apps I have tried so far I deleted as they just don't add any real value to the camera's own settings.

Hi,
I'm trying the recommended apps on my GC.
However, I'd like to have some other Camera features:
- 3D still photo (don't say it's impossible with a one-lens camera, Samsung WB850F smart camera can do it with a similar(or same ?) lens of Galaxy Camera)
- 3D panorama (this is another great feature of Samsung WB850F - captures panorama with 3D feature)
- Action panorama (this is another great feature of Samsung WB850F - captures panorama and a moving object on the still background)
Are there any 3rd party apps which could do these 3 features ?
thx.

no ideas ?
I've tried the following apps on Galaxy camera. Some of them are really useful apps. Some of them are not working, crashing.
HD Panorama+
Nice app for panorama photos.
Camera 3D
Manual 3D photo app. There are tons of this kind of 3D photo apps. This one is pretty good.
3D Photo Cam
The description of this app is tempting but it crashed on my Galaxy Camera. HAs anyone tried it successfully ?
FaceinHole
Great app for face in hole scenarios.
PIP Camera
Great PIP scenarios. Really nice.
Twin Me!
Crashed on my Galaxy Camera. But it seems to have uniq features like having 2 times same object in the photo on same background.
Does anyone have any idea why it crashes ?
MotionGraph
Nice one to have only some part of the photo moving.
Why do we have so many apps crashing ? (if they also crash on your GC)

TIP OF THE DAY
INTRO
If you don't like the camera's quality it is because the google camera app is not the best for the grand prime, actually this is the problem of all ROMs based on the pure android, isn't the image clear enough? does the image looks blurred?
I've been comparing my camera on android oreo with my another phone (both are the same model), one has the stock Android and the other one has the pure Android 8 and the differences are huge, how to work around this problem?
Well... I have researched and talked to devs about this and it turns out that the drivers of the camera are the same as the stock firmware, but the only thing what changes the quality is how the image is processed by the camera application.
So who's the one to blame? The camera app.
What is the solution?
The real solution is to use ROMs based on the stock ROM, i.e. touchwiz, but I have noticed that many people still prefer using the pure Android so this solution is not possible. There is still another way.
CyanogenMod camera and fine adjustments
That's what you read, with the 'old' Cyanogen camera app you can have better pictures.
First, install this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maartendekkers.cyanapps
It's called Cyan Apps if the link isn't working.
and then...
Choose 'camera' on CM's 13 sectionNote: Don't choose the CM 14.1 version because it crashes when you start recording a video or change to frontal camera.
Download and install it.
Adjustments
Open the camera and go to settings, drag down until the last options and turn off the Denoise option, then go to the sharpness and set to the level 0 (or do whatever you think is better) and go to the picture quality and set to it 100%. The rest of the options you can leave in the default level.
Optional
You can, alternatively, with root access make this a system application and delete the other one just to have only one default camera for your ROM.
In the images attached below I want you to pay attention in the sharpness of the image and the quality, I hope you don't mind if I'm a bad photographer.
UPDATE: I know the link is broken and the reason is because the Cyan Apps has been removed from playstore, I don't know why, but you know now the secret to make the image good-looking, you have to turn off denoise option which comes by default turned on in all Samsung cameras. Find an APP that can make this for you. Best Regards

Low light is always an enemy for the camera
This WILL also work on Snap-based (that's the camera included on most AOSP ROMs) cameras.
Hi!
I am planing on buying this phone (currently have a S5 that's beginning to show it's age) and would really like to know if poco has a working (and tested) RAW photo support. This is something I actually miss the most with my S5 camera. Can someone with a GCam please check and ideally upload a low light high ISO DNG sample photo?
If anyone is wondering what's the use of RAW, with all the hassle (beware, technical details ahead, possibly even a bit of math!):
Access to the RAW sensor data is extremely powerful. When doing a night time photography you can get significantly better results by manually lowering the ISO and bumping the exposure but in truly low light that's not enough. You then take dozens of 30s exposures and add them together. The problem is that if you are working with JPEGs, it doesn't really work for extremely low signals. If there is a light source in your image that even after 30s exposure does not expose a pixel enough to bump the value from 0 to 1, with the added noise reduction it gets rounded to 0 every time, so adding zeroes gets you nowhere. On the other hand, if there is a significant noise in your sensor, that's actually in this case extremely helpful. By adding the photos that have a very low signal (below a normal detection threshold) but also a significant noise, you can remove the noise and still get the signal that has 'piggybacked' on the noise above the pixel threshold. Doing this, if you have the patience, basically makes your photos limited only by the 12MP sensor resolution and the lens quality. The quality of the sensor, it's dynamic range and noise level becomes completely irrelevant and you can basically simulate an 'ideal' sensor with arbitrarily large dynamic range and sensitivity and arbitrarily low noise. You should, for example, be able to do astrophotography and photograph objects that are too dim to be visible with a naked eye, beyond what even dSLRs can manage without these kinds of tricks.
With the very fast CPU and plentiful RAM you could even possibly automate this tedious process on the phone itself (for example by the use of CLI linux raw photo manipulation tools installed through termux or linuxdeploy) so it could be as simple as putting a phone on a tripod (or a sky tracking mount), starting a simple script and waiting for half an hour while the phone takes and processes the photos.
With access to the still linear RAW pixel data, you can even use the camera as a 'scientific' sensor in, for example, a cheap portable spectroscope. The possibilities are endless
Yes, I am well aware that I am weird
yup you can. also you can install 3rd party app and camera2 api is enabled by default no need to root and bootloader unlock for that.
Secondly camera is super awesome.
i can you lead to telegram group where people share their photoshots done on poco f1. you will get the idea
The gcam is one option for you to capture raw images but it does not support manual mode so you cannot get those long exposure raw images to talked about. What you can do is get a camera app that supports both raw images capturing and manual mode like proshot or manual camera
Very cool, thank you both! It would be great if someone could upload an actual DNG file taken with the poco and an app that also supports manual exposure. I am curious if the cli programs will recognise the format.

well manual mode is supported by default camera, but it doesn't have any option for RAW output.

I've shot some raw photos using latest GCAM. However I don't know any apps for RAW files editing in phone. And I Didn't get time to check their quality on Photoshop. RAW files size is around 15Mb. I can send you those photos if you want to check.

Gcam with manual controls does exist you know. Just get gcam with mods or from sannnity. These have manual control which can control ISO from 100 to 6400, shutter time from 1s to 32s (nothing shorter than 1s) and manual focus control. They can save it in raw.
FreeDCam also supports both manual controls and RAW.

I noticed a big difference between google camera and the stock camera in terms of landscape views, google camera does a lot better(especially after turning on Lib patcher settings). But for individual objects it seems the stock camera does better in terms of exposure. I think I will depend on google cam just for landscape photos and raw images.
One thing I also found today, when I record with Slow Motion in google cam.. the video will not work.
I haven't found any that adequately support the phone's cameras.
Waiting in vain for astrophotography support with more than 3sec shutter speed.
This device doesn't even have a full PRO camera mode that can adjust shutter speed.
got it on my stock build A71. Photo's are good, but can't do widescreen. Videos are ok, seams quicker on videos, less time "catching up " with what's on the screen . will test outside later, no AR as well , but stable.

Yeah I noticed that too, This phone cameras are really good, nothing to complain, just the stock camera app that It's too limited, the phone support camera2api but the stock app doesn't let us tweak our photos in a professional way, there's that "Pro" mode in the app but it's nothing near the real capabilities of Camera2Api with raw photos and so on.
I read in Arnova's article in Google Camera port that there is a module for magisk to enable all the cameras of the phone. Anyone tried it ?
Also I would confirm that there are still issues with the slow motion recorder, the video will be lagging.
I have just checked the last update of Urnyx 7.3.0.018and added the config file of Samsung A71 and it actually works very well! even switching Auxiliary Camera works. But there are two things are still missing:
1-It seems it swithces to the wide camera only (12mp) for both 0.6x and 2x, so 64mp and micro are not added.
2-Slow motion mode still lagging.
I think we should work on making a specific version or configs for A71 which enables the rest of Cameras.
[UPDATE]
Using Arnova Gcam, lastest version. I was able to switch the camera lens between 12mp (wide) and 16mp(main). The other lenses keep crashing the app.
This was done by setting ID Camera 0 and ID Camera 2 in the Mod settings. Maybe by the magisc module it may work, yet my phone is not rooted.

By editing the options you can export a config file. For example in Arnova's version, there is a mod option which gives you extra optiions that you set and then export a config file, I don't know much but I think for our case we need deeper changes in the port. We might need to edit the port files.

Is anyone elses viewfinder laggy? The preview image?
The stock camera app of Nord 2 is ****. It over processes the images and the photos don't look like they are taken from a 50MP camera.
Any suggestions on what to do or some good GCam you can suggest?
Some examples? High mp sensors suffer in low light and have a more shallow depth of field especially up close to subjects. An accurate AF lock is important because of the narrow DOF; example, always try to get a AF lock on the subject's closest eye when shooting a face.
Adjust your shooting style according to the camera's strengths and weaknesses. See as the camera sees not as your eyes see. Human vision has exponentially more processing power and an incredible imaging system more so than any camera.
I want a proper gcam version if available or any better alternative that stock.
Always disable HDR option and pictures will look a lot better (sadly the app doesn't remember this setting so you have to turn it off each time) . The HDR process in the Nord 2 is absolutely awful .
Download the first file in this link. Photos taken with the primary camera will be much better, though I don't think Night Sight works. https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-wichaya/f/dl5/
DISABLE HDR. It's a known issue.
But you can't disable HDR when taking photos directly in other apps (whatsapp, telegram, etc)? I had OP8T and it had same issue and I had returned it...
GCam won't give you 50MP. AFAIK the only way to get 50MP on stock Nord 2 is by using the Extra HD feature in the stock camera app.
I'm curious to know if people with rooted devices have this capability enabled in the API. Let us know please

50Mpx is available in some GCAm versions (Wichaya and Nikita if I remember correctly, BSG and Greatness don't have the full resolution option) , but the 50mpx full resolution of the sensor is totally useless (not only with the nord 2 , but generaly with all other phones) , 12mpx pixel bining gives you better image processing, less noise , etc... a quick look at the reviews explain very clearly why is not a good idea to use the full resolution (50, 108mpx etc...) of a phone sensor.
Personally I use the BSG 8.4 v10 version and pictures are great, Google HDR+ implementation give a lot better results than stock app

Was this on stock or rooted? Btw for me the 4:1 binning is not something desirable since I stack very low light photos, run my own denoising and various other process. Hence why I need the full sensor data made available to apps like OpenCamera

I don't think HDR and other processing options are enabled for 3rd party apps (same goes for the ultrawide lens, you can't use it in other apps) for me whatsapp and telegram pictures look good (but they are heavily compressed)

Yes, IM apps do compress photos but that's different story than colour fidelity. In my time with 8T the colours in photo app and telegram/whatsapp were simply blown out of proportion: something normal-red in real life was glowing like burning Mars in 8T photos. After disabling HDR in camera app the photos looked ok (though still overprocessed hence IMHO OP3 photos looked better!) but in whatsapp/telegram I still had same issue with stupid extreme colours...
