Do you just want to root or are you intending to flash a custom ROM?
Rooting in itself will not get you much as the OS is so old for either tablet that you won't be able to do much. Even internet browsing will be a challenge.
And so the reason I ask is that you don't need to go through a rooting process to flash a custom ROM (which might allow you root access).

ok thanks for the feedback, I am not sure only that when it is customized (rooted) it will open to other things. I really just want to use to read books such as pdf, .epub etc and not have to pay an arm and leg in how expensive Barnes and noble is these days.

OK, so rooting is not really customizing. It just allows you to make changes at the system level.
As far as I recall, at least the Nook Tablet's current OS (which is Android 2.3--I think) will allow you to install your own apps without any rooting or other changes. You could pick from a small number of readers that have versions for Gingerbread, or even use some of the apps that run on the Nook Simple Touch (Android 2.1).
I'm not sure about the Nook Color since I do not own one.
That said, if you just want to read epubs and pdfs, the stock B&N reader on the Nook Tablet can do both and you can side-load your own books without buying any from B&N.
If you want a more modern tablet which can run a decent browser, video and music apps, better readers, etc., then you would want to flash a custom ROM like the CyanogenMod ROMs that have been developed over the (for example) all the way up to Android 7.0 (Nougat) and give reasonably good performance (at least for the 16 gb model; the 8 gb model is better off with Android 5.1 or 6.01). Those ROMs come with root options for further individual customization.
ok Thank you for the further info that helps a lot, however I would like to find books to put on the nook via internal storage and add a sd card as well, I want to put my own downloads not just from Barnes and noble can you recommend website that provides

the truth
Hey man!
the Vtab 1008 is a decent tablet for what it is built for: entertainment and light games. Now, about your question. A custom ROM (Read-only Memory) or os (which is always android) can be flashed to the vTab 1008 as long as it is rooted. It needs to be rooted to flash a custom recovery image which is an unlocked bootloader, which can flash new versions of android to the device. The new 1.5 OTA update blocks root, and there are only a few people making efforts to get the tablet rooted. Now for the possibility of honeycomb (Android 3.0). The vTab has a single core Marvel series armada 1gHz processor with some decent graphics capabilities (we see this when it plays HD video without a hiccup). Most tablets that are honeycomb capable have dual-core processors. Now i believe that honeycomb WILL run on this tablet with some optimization including:uncompressed images, and custom launcher (maybe?). But before we can worry about this, we really need root on the new update. hit thanks?

We have honeycomb!!!!!
Trying root...
hello guys,
Before my tablet updated, i tried to get ADB working on it but my computer hates ADB drivers lol. NOW ATTENTION!!!!! If your tablet has yet to update to honeycomb, PLEASE pull update.zip from it before it reboots! If you can get me that update file, i can improve on it greatly. Also, I really want to get root on this thing, so we can get cwm on it. Once we have a custom recovery, we can build a pure AOSP rom on it. I don't care, i'll resize everything, and get the vendorid files, and build a ROM, but we need root and CWM ported. Keep the momentum guys.
BUMP
Has ANYBODY PULLED THE UPDATE.ZIP????
Through a series of PM's I have confirmed my doubts, there is most likely a security check that is REALLY low level. We will most likely not be able to flash a custom ROM without the ROM being signed by Vizio with their private key. I've been trying for a long time with this tab, and I am getting exhausted with it. I have tried a custom ROM that i made and i get errors with cwm. Kaos420 has experianced the same thing. I have updated to 3.2 and root is no longer possible..........not at this time anyway
i have a maylong m270 tablet can anyone plz tell me,how to gain acesess to root,i cant find anything on this tablet,it is android 4.0.4 the kernal is 3.0.8 the build number is rockchip imm76d,any help would be very appreciated much .. thanks rod
Hi, if you searched for it on Google and XDA (as I just did to check), it likely has not been rooted yet. Sorry! The best thing you could do is to google search and search XDA every week or so, maybe something will turn up soon!
I might get one of these, as they're $100 on Target's website for Cyber Monday.
Not enough people have them for someone to invest the time into rooting, but a common root method might work...

Got mines at walmart for $79. I have the same kernel as him except my firmware version is 4.0.3.
Still can't find anything on this damn tablet. Almost wish I didn't buy it heheh.
Supposedly root is available on M-270 but I still can't install Superuser. su is present in xbin too. I tried to use superoneclick and it said it was rooted then I tried to continue with root anyway and it froze. Has anyone had this problem and found a solution yet?

I successfully rooted my Maylong M270 by using the software in the linked thread. I was able to install Google Play, and from there I updated SuperUser and BusyBox. Titanium Backup works properly. Without a custom kernel, overclocking is impossible for the moment, and I'm not too sure on how a kernel (or custom recovery and ROM for that matter) can be ported, but the root is here and working.

I call bogus on this post. I tried both means to root the Maylong M270 using this method and it does not work. Instead of just posting "I DID IT", why not help out the users and post HOW you did it... simply following the links and downloads on the post you've referenced doesn't do it.

I know it's been way long since the OP, but a tool called "ICS root" (can be found on SourceForge) will unlock this tablet. The device is a bit temperamental so once you run the .bat in terminal, you will have to manually restart and log back into the tablet before continuing each prompt at the terminal. Eventually after 2 -3 prompts, the .bat will be finished and the tablet will "update Android", a sign that you have successfully rooted.
Good luck all.

However, I'm not allowed to post links, since I have not posted before. So I'm going to post this info in a series of posts, hoping that by the end, links will be allowed.
To find more info on your tablet there is an app in the Play store called CPU Identifier that will tell you what type of board you have in the tablet. Search for that board name on XDA to find rooting advice.

Custom ROM and ROOT for Maylong M-270
But the short story is, there is a way to root this tablet, but even better there is a custom ROM available. HardcoreHacker over at "techknow dot me" has been working hard on this. The key to figuring this out was realizing the WM8950 SOC chip set used in this tablet is the same as the WM8850. They are interchangeable. The rom is called Uberoid and is Jellybean 4.1.1, and it works great. My tablet runs very well now, and doesn't lock up all the time like it used to. I also have a link where you can download the original firmware from Maylong. So I'm trying to get some posts here so I can do a proper link, however here are some ugly links to try.
Original Firmware:
maylonggroup dot com forward slash Tablet_downloads.htm
and Uberoid Link
3w's "dot" techknow "dot" me "forward slash" forum "forward slash" index.php?topic=5356.0
Again, I apologize for the very cryptic links - I will work on getting them posted properly. I have two of these tablets and both are running Uberoid. I'm very satisfied with it. The only issue I have (on both tablets) is the battery monitoring is very poor. But this is in the kernel I think because it is the same as it was before the custom ROM.
NOTE! - as you will see on the Maylong Site, there are two different models of this tablet - You can tell which you have based on your serial number, but I think this is a pretty important distinction. If you have the same model as I do, you are going to need JingHan_MID7_V715_8228_FT5206.fwc from the Uberoid List. My model's serial number is M2701204 which is in the same group as M2701202, M2701203, and M2701205)

I used SRSRoot on this device and it worked. My device is now rooted.
Hello, and thanks to all who take the time to read this and offer their support.
To everyone else... just hello.
Okay.
I have a few of those cheap Chinese 7" tablets so common on e-Bay these days. For the price, most of these are okay and seem to run fairly well "as-is" without having to spend a lot of time rooting them or installing CFW. This one however is just a little bit different.
Here's the deal... The tablet I'm going to be addressing in this thread has a ROM that was not customized for the retailer very well. The particular combination of apps and services it has causes the tablet to perform horribly. I'd really like to change this. The problem is however that because there are so many of these around these days, many of these generic units have not been "developed." Because of this, rooting these devices or replacing the ROM's is often very difficult if not downright impossible. At times, even identifying the specifics of the hardware. This tablet is one of those.
I've tried just about everything I can think of to simply modify the ROM it has in a way that would make it work better, but there are a few apps installed that are locked and impossible to modify or remove. I've come to the conclusion at this point that if possible, installing a custom ROM is going to be the only way to "fix" it. I have been able to root the device, but I have not been able to replace the recovery app , nor have I been able to identify a ROM that might be able to be installed once I do.
What I need from you folks.
If I supply every scrap of information I can come up with about this tablet, would someone please be willing to tell me which ROM just might work, and how I can use the recovery app that's installed to install it? If so, thank you.
Here's the information.
Options available in the installed recovery app.
A. Apply update from ADB
B. Apply update from external storage.
C. Apply update from cache.
Here's the tablet information.
Brand: ZTO
Model: N1 PLUS (Generic Chinese 7" tablet)
Android version: 4.1.1
Baseband version: v0.4rc3
Kernal version: 3.0.8+
Build number: N1 PLUS_wifi-7601_V4.1.1 JR003C 20131202
And again, Thank you.
I recently got a Kindle HDX and I despise the way the store is laid out.
I want to install Google play but of course amazon took away that freedom so everything is purchased through their market... I've never owned an android before and don't know any technical guides, but all the easier ways/ways I understand are for earlier versions, and with forced updates Im at the newest version which apparently cant be rooted. If someone could explain how to:
1) Downgrade / regrade my kindle
2) Root the kindle
&
3) Get the google play store in terms I could understand, it would help alot.

You really need some Android experience to pull off the required steps without bricking your device. My recommendation to wait for a solution to come to the level of firmware your device is running. If FireOS (Amazon Store) is too unpalatable suggest returning your device and pick-up a Nexus 7 instead.
I also recommend avoiding 'hacks' that allow installing Google Play/Services on FireOS. Problems abound. You can obtain the current version of many free android applications from other marketplaces such as 1Mobile. It is an imperfect solution but better than the alternatives IMO - especially for inexperienced users.
I'm thinking about getting a HDX 7 with the current firmware. Just wanted to ask whether or not it is currently possibly (or work in progress) to install a custom ROM ? If not, I won't buy it.

Yes, but the process is tedious and carries some risk. If successful you have the option of Nexus v4 or cm11. In your shoes I would look at something else.

You can't update the browser unless you root the device. If you just root it, the OS is so old you may not find a browser that will run on it. You really need to update the OS with a new ROM.
This is the 8gb model, right? Reports are that the limited RAM makes anything past KitKat (CM 11) problematic. I have posted some older ROMs :https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-tablet/general/cm-10-11-nook-8-gb-tablet-t3570821
I'd recommend a pico GApps package from opengapps.org for the CM 11 ROMs. There is a GApps package I included with one of the ROMs which was posted along with it originally, but I think it would be better not to overload the system. A pico package will basicallyy get you PlayStore access and nothing else (not even Gmail). Then you can add whatever you want (and not have what you don't want busy in the background).
If you want to try for Lollipop (CM 12.1), I have the file. Let me know.
Thank you! I was mistaken; the model is BNTV250...which, I gather, is the 16G.
I've researched rooting, and it appears that an SD card is usually required. There is little - meaning no - money to spend here, so I've also looked into other methods...such as kingroot. I'm a risk-taker, but I know so little about all of this.

OK. The 16 gb is much better in terms of what's available and up-to-date. I have one and am using the AOSP 7.0 ROM (instructions for installation here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-tablet/general/how-to-installing-aosp-android-7-0-t3578665).
Don't be fixated on root. It is not going to solve your issues with updating the browser because the B&N Android version underneath all their stuff is 2.3. Current Android OS is 7.1 so......... You can see that finding a browser (or other apps) for the older system is not going to be easy and the results will be less than thrilling.
The safest way is flashing a ROM using an SD card (rooting is generally part of the package). I'd be very careful about kingroot. It may or may not work, but in any case you'd still be stuck on Android 2.3.
Maybe you can borrow an SD card?
Edit: but maybe you do just want to root and see if you can find a browser that will be better. In that case there is a simple guide somewhere in this forum, but it does require the use of an SD card
