Hello!
I wrote the following email to Sony Developer World, but they asked me to post it here.I don't know why I should do this because this page is not meintained by Sony. But hoping that Sony will give me a definitive answer I do as they asked me for:
[start of email]
I haven’t understood your risk explanation on your „Unlock your boot loader“ page because to my mind it is a little bit unprecise:
You wrote there:
“Risks
Please be aware that Sony cannot guarantee the full functionality, and will not be responsible, for any unsigned custom ROM being flashed to your device after the boot loader is unlocked. An unsigned custom ROM may not have gone through the thorough tests that we run for each device and software version that we release.
Also, a custom ROM might not work properly on your device, and certain functions and offerings may cease to work. The performance of the device might also be affected, and you may damage your device permanently. In worst case, unlocking the boot loader will cause physical injuries or material damage, for example, due to the device overheating.
Certain pre-loaded content on your device may also be inaccessible due to the removal of DRM security keys. For high-end devices running recent software versions, for instance Xperia Z3, the removal of DRM security keys may affect advanced camera functionality. For example, noise reduction algorithms might be removed, and performance when taking photos in low-light conditions might be affected. The secure user data partition may also become inaccessible, and you will not be able to get any more official software upgrades if you unlock the boot loader.
After unlocking your device, you should not enable My Xperia (found in the settings menu under security on some devices running Android 5.0) as this might cause the device to malfunction.”
I don’t understand the red marked sentence. So my question concerns the removal of the DRM security keys because I haven’t found out who and when they are removed:
WHO removes the DRM security keys? Is it done by SONY when unlocking the bootloader (and why do you do that?) or is it a risk caused by installing custom ROM’s or recovery images?
And what will happen if I’ll unlock the bootloader of my Sony Xperia Z5 compact via the integrated function “OEM unlock”? Will the DRM security keys deleted any way using this or will they be preserved? And will I be able to lock the bootloader again?
Regards
Ansgar

It's done automatically if you unlock the bootloader, i.e. "by Sony".

Most likely, but the DRM keys cannot be restored. They are forever lost.
sorry, that's bull****.
remove the bootloader lock in developer settings and you will see, that Marlin, Widevine and CKB are still active and reported as "key ok"
and no, Sony does not remove them, you do it while flashing.
BTW. there are already early attempts in flashing, and yes they have deleted their DRMs. and no, there is no way to bring them back.
however, for the time being: keep the bootloader closed, as you've no benefits from unlocking it, yet.

Dude, you should relax. There's no manure in my post.
You have misunderstood the toggle in the developer settings menu. It does NOT unlock the bootloader.
The toggle only disables some software features that would cause trouble if you actually choose to unlock the bootloader.
Bootloader in unlocked using fastboot oem unlock, as always.

Well, I'm relaxed, but you help no-one in posting wrong stuff.
Lets make it simple:
Compare it with a simple door and a door guard.
The door guard has order only to let you in, having a specific key.
In order to get this key, e.g. for the z3 family:
Go to Sonys webpage, register, download the key.
procedure for the z5c:
go into developer settings, enable: OEM unlock.
This corresponds to: Tell the guard, no key is required anymore.
Setting the flag of making something accessible is called "unlock" - so: in fact you can call it "unlock the boot loader" by enable the "OEM unlock" in Developer Settings*.
fastboot oem unlock does much more.
In my example:
go to the door,
ask the guard: is door open / already unlocked?
[z3c: handover the key to the guard]
[z3c: Wait to get the "Ok" to pass - guard: unlock the door] -> correspond to: setting flag: accessible = unlock
pushing the door open,
hanging a fat note in the entrance hall telling "Door is open";
So: you did not miss understood what the toggle does, but the whole procedure.
And no: the toggle does not disable some software feature, it just removes the OEM specific key requirement by accessing the boot loader
*Note: I know, that was quite rough simplification, and to be absolute correct: the OEM unlock toggle in Dev. Setting does in fact not physically "unlock" the boot loader. It just removes the requirement for a key in the unlocking process. However, that correspond to an open boot loader, as all attempt to enter it, will not be denied.

I can't argue with you. I'm not even sure where we agree and disagree.
For the sake of other users, here's the clarification:
Under Developer settings, there is a setting called "OEM Unlocking - Allow the bootloader to be unlocked".
This setting does not unlock the bootloader, it just enables the possibility to unlock. That's why it's called "Allow the bootloader to be unlocked".
No DRM keys will be deleted by toggling this setting.
After setting "Allow the bootloader to be unlocked", you can unlock the bootloader using fastboot.
When doing so, the DRM keys will be deleted and the bootloader will be unlocked.
Until you issue the fastboot command, you can't flash any unsigned code - as usual.

We are not arguing here
I asked you to be more specific as unlocking a door does not mean opening it.
However - there is one important thing missing and quite profound error in your summary (beside the "unlock" wording stuff...).
Enabling the "OEM Unlocking" switch bears a high security risk. Unsigned software now can enter the TA.
In fact: you do not have to run the fastboot unlock by yourself. Any piracy software can now make irreparable damages to the phone!

You are saying that toggling the "OEM Unlocking" switch would make TA partition writeable (by any other user than root)?
Why would you assume that?

No, I'm not saying this.
But the reason for the OEM Lock is to ensure, only OEM signed software is able to be installed.
Enabling "OEM Unlocking" removes this check.
This implies:
- Nice people can now provide software to be installed -> custom roms.
- Bad people can now also install software, but to their needs.
To keep it simple: Let some evil person post any rom called "official Sony z5c Android 6.0".
Let this bad person make the appearance of this rom as any official Sony Update.
Users with the OEM lock in place will not be able to install it, as the OEM key from Sony is missing.
Users with the OEM lock removed will install it w/o any burden.
Do not forget:
Original OEM Software still is signed as original software.
To install the original software, you do not have to toggle the "OEM unlock" in the Developers Settings, as this ROM carries the original OEM key.
to install original software, you do not have to fastboot oem unlock
Removing the OEM-key check with the "OEM unlock" switch, makes the OEM-key obsolete. Hence bears a security risk.

You either learn this in school, or should find it s.w. in the Android docs.
And instead of flaming you should start reading and learn IT.
So be brave and toggle the switch, which by your interpretation has no meaning.
The rest of the user i can only advice to keep it locked and only enable in order to flash customs Roms.

So, if I get you right, I just need a customized firmware (e. g. a pre-rooted one), toggle that "OEM unlock" switch and install it via recovery mode? And that without loosing DRM keys? If it is so easy rooting is no problem, isn't it?

No, "OEM Unlock" is just a option to allow OEM unlock, so you have to unlock bootloader after enabling it (and you'll loose DRM key)
Hello,
As the title says, I'm wanting to root my new CAT S61. Anyone managed to unlock the bootloader yet? I've played around with it but haven't had any luck so far.
+1, Me too. Just started debating them on facebook, to maybe have some pressure on to unlock the bootloader the nice way. Until that I am ready to donate. I really miss htc sense, coming from 10-year htc spree.
I have had a few email and chat exchanges with them but haven't made any progress in getting them to provide any help in unlocking the bootloader but I still have my fingers crossed. And yes, I miss htc sense also.......I didn't think I would. FYI, I downloaded Nova Launcher and I set to look much like sense.
I've also been on to their support team looking for assistance with this..... Massively unhelpful...
I asked them about possibilities of unlocking the bootloader (I usually void every warranty covering computer equipment I own within days of owning devices) and I was told along the lines of "No. This will void the warranty so we would not allow this on the device.".... Its MY device and MY warranty to void ffs!
Really gets on my tits the attitude they took.
Anyway, am thinking that unlocking the bootloader may end up like a long wait and a bit of a chore; however if anyone is able to get a dump of the stock image it would surely be possible to patch the image with Magisk then "fastboot flash" it back onto the Cat S61?
This should at least give SU access (for busybox and all that lovely stuff) as well as keeping all the FLIR/proprietary laser/VOC sensor stuff.
EDIT: I've got in touch with Bullitt Group directly instead of going through Cat, and am awaiting a reply from them regarding acquiring a factory image I can play around with... Hopefully they will be able to supply it to me!
Regarding unlocking the bootloader, I haven't tried myself yet (because I haven't got around to getting my laptop OS installed again... That's another story entirely involving bad decisions with Kali lol) but if you boot the phone into bootloader mode (power on the device by using either volume up or volume down and power button or the adb reboot bootloader command via USB). Then you may be able to use the fastboot flashing unlock command to unlock the bootloader...
I really miss the sense freestyle themes, where there is no grid and you pick a theme with background image(can be changed) and stickers (just some themed icons with different sizes). Then you place your stickers and assign apps to them. I myself used an archtecure theme, where there were stickers varying feom minimalistic monopoly houses up to vertically big skyscrapers and horizontally long trains. For my gf I made nature theme with nice summer bliss and clouds, deers, rabbits, butterflies and birds. Its just so customizable. I hate being restricted to grids or standard sizes icons or their 2x, 4x and so on.

I just received a 130MB OTA, I hope it was not a security update, casting me out of the gang, when someone finds the cure for the older build. The build LTE_D0201121.0_S61_0.040.02 gave me Flir Youtube streaming option.

LTE_D0201121.0_S61_0.040.02 is the build I'm on as well, so don't worry too much... However I've been on this build since sometime in July, so don't know why you've only just got the OTA ?
Anyway, the other thought I have been having is trying to port across a custom recovery from the Motorola Moto X4. Same chipset, same RAM, same board and same screen resolution, so it just might work... Once I get hold of a flash dump and unlock the bootloader that is ? I'm getting a bit ahead of myself!
Just received another OTA, September 1st patch, LTE_D0201121.0_S61_0.046.02. Radio is LTE_D0201121.1_S61 after the update. This one was larger, but I forgot to screenshot the exact changes and size.

I will not buy it until it is rootable.
Nope, no luck as of yet... Nothing I seem to try is giving me any options or progress.
Rather frustrated carrying round 2 devices lol one for root apps and the s61 for everything else!
Still impressed at the phone though, VERY utilitarian!
Hey there, I will get my S61 tomorrow.
Was hoping for any root idea, but will hopefully survive without until we have the privilege to get it
... and there is no option in the programmer options (unlock bootloader)?
Did not stumble upon such a function yet.
The most annoying thing without root is missing a good ad blocking. dns66 seems to work, but there are still plenty of ads in apps that get through...
Also having potentially all power unlocked would be great!
So no news here I guess?
To enter bootloader:
1.switch of your phone
2.press volume down
3.conect the power cable

I've been looking at this phone for some time. I was able to get a Moto Z2 Force from Verizon into EDL mode with simple commands, so I'm wondering if you can unlock this bootloader just by telling it to unlock.
You would put the device into fastboot mode (by going to the bootloader, instructions were posted above i think), and then try some commands like this
fastboot flashing unlock
or
fastboot oem unlock
also check if in developer settings there is a toggle for Allow bootloader unlock or OEM unlock or w/e they call it.
if this works I highly suggest figuring out a way to grab the entire system to make a backup before you do anything. there's no twrp yet but it can't be too difficult to compile, but i dont have this $1000 waste of money to do any of this. i hope this post helps someone

Are these commands on a computer through ADB?
The only options I had on the phone were:

Hi,
I looked a bit into the process of rooting on this device. It would be cool to get it rooted. I guess this process is in theory simple. But we should focus on the first problem:
Why is the option "OEM unlock" hidden in the developer Menu? Are there ways to make that option usable? If anyone has an idea how to make this option usable, we could get to the next step. Thanks to anyone who has an contribution.
Edit: some additional info
C:\adb\platform-tools>fastboot oem device-info

I guess we have to somehow unlock the bootloader again! when I switch slot and reboot the bootloader it says locked on Android 10 slot, and unlocked on Android 9 slot.
I tried :
Code:
fastboot oem bs_unlock
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
Neither worked I also tried MI unlock tool but it still can't unlock it. The only way was to reboot the bootloader into Android 9 slot then flash the patched boot.img but the phone won't load the OS it just keep rebooting very fast. (this is also happens when tring to flash stock boot which I pulled using TWRP)
I had to hold both volume keys buttons + power while connect it to the PC "USB. must be connected" and when it reboot into black screen then I hold volume down key + power for around 60 seconds to boot into bootloader again.
I will try again tomorrow with different approach.

Yes.. MIUI has completely different unlock management from JoyUI. I didn't try it yet, but if JoyUI11 goes to perfect same unlock management of MIUI, I guess we need to sign in MI account, submit unlock request, waiting 360 or 720 hours, then we could receive the unlock key/permission. I didn't think they change it that much.... they could change the dm-verify or something else also... but, if they didn't change it so much, I guess we maybe can use the unlock key in Android 9 bootloader. (Certain MiUI devices have no key to unlock the bootloader even if we know the unlock command...)
I believe you will find the way. Good luck...

I tried using MUI but it doesn't work yet, maybe it future, but surely they changed the way of unlocking the bootloader, maybe they want to make it simpler so they can use MIUI unlock tool or maybe they want to make it harder since the unlocking code is available online :silly:.
I also tried to root it using Magisk manager while on Android 9 slot, but that didn't work either.
Other things to note, after updating to JoyUI 11 the phone takes significantly more time to boot, also you need to factory reset your phone to be able to boot it. Moreover, don't like the feel of the UI, the OS feel heavy and strangely some stock apps have ads in it. On top of all that, it is very difficult to root it right now if even possible at the moment.
Therefore, I don't recommend anyone to upgrade to Joy UI 11, and wait for further updates.
To anyone needs to downgrade Black Shark 2 Pro go to the bottom of the first post.

Well, apparently they do not support my model (which is the X10). Their tool can only detect the phone, not unlock its bootloader
Well, Nokia/HMD wants to have their phones and tablets deadlocked, and 8.3 is my only and final Nokia Android phone.
No more.
Good Morning,
I have arrived at this thread looking for how to unlock the bootloader of my Nokia X10/X20 for later rooting it.
It seems that there is no way to do it.
To do Root I have found this link (is in Spanish): https://www.ayudaroot.com/root/nokia/como-hacer-root-al-nokia-x10/
The option «Enable OEM unlocking», comes in gray and is not accessible, with which I have not been able to apply this solution.
I have found this other article: How to Unlock Bootloader on Any Nokia Smartphone.
Someone has tried?
If the answer is affirmative, does it work?
If nobody has tried it, do you think it can work?
All the best

Nope, the "buying unlock bootloader keys" (I meant the thing in the "How to Unlock Bootloader on Any Nokia Smartphone" article, the official way also does not work anymore, due to the site is dead) way does not work on the Nokia X10/20 (the creators of those keys confirmed with me that it's literally impossible to unlock those phones and potentially any future Nokia phones).
The "Enable OEM unlocking" should not be not accessible, my Nokia X10 does not have that option greyed out.
About the tool used in the Spanish site? I'm not so sure about whether it will work or not. The tutorial video shows a different phone, but it seems so legit. Try it at your own risk, I guess.

Good morning,
Thank you very much for the answer, but I inform you:
My phone is new, just arrived from the provider (Nokia directly).
-Modelo: TA1332.
-Compilation 00WW_1_070.
-Android 11.
-Actualization May 5, 2021
I have not modified anything, and I assure you that the «Enable OEM Unlocking» option, is gray and is not accessible.
A rectification, I think.

In the article, not in the video; It refers to a Qualcomm chip, but requires that the "Enable OEM Unlocking" option is unlocked.
Three questions apart:
1.- Is there any way to root this smartphone?
2.- Is this option valid to make a backup of the ROM?: [Tutorial] How to use Miracle Box to backup Qualcomm Android firmware
3.- And is it to restore the ROM?: [Tutorial] How to use Miracle Box / Thunder to flash firmware to Qualcomm devices

Apparently, the creators of the site that sells bootloader unlocking keys for Nokia phones said that you should ignore sites like the Spanish link, because those websites write similar content for every device that exists and just replace the device name and publish it again, then again for another device. But I guess you can try using it and see, I guess?
For the first question, I don't think you can root the phone with Magisk? You need some files inside the ROM file, but there's no ROM files for Nokia X10/20.
For the second and third question, I do not know if the tool even works. I do ask the creators of that site (again), and I quote:
I don't think they will work. The only way to trigger EDL on the device would be to disassemble and then short the testpoint to trigger EDL. But what next? What do you aim to do while in EDL mode?
We do not know which bytes are written on the chip that remembers the unlocked status. So, even in EDL mode, there isn't much that we can tinker and re-write to the device. I am also unsure if the user firmware that hmd ships to the Nokia Care includes EDL programmer, they never did for the Nokia 7.2 (the last Nokia device I really tried to play around with). Without the programmer, none of the EDL flash tools will work and we can't load just any programmer. It has to be signed by the OEM. A wrong/invalid/modified firehose programmer can put the device into a non-recoverable state.
HMD hasn't done much magic into making the phones more appealing to the buyers. But they have money and time to make more mess behind the scenes to make their devices more secure (which they think is better).
Sorry for the rant, but there's no meaningful ways to unlock the Nokia X10/20 and possibly any forthcoming phone.

In conclusion: It's impossible, but you can try? (Try it at your own risk of course, you could brick the whole thing, and nothing will fix it.) I do not even know if it's possible or not, so... eh?

Also, next time you buy a phone, just go buy a Samsung/Xiaomi or whatever brand that do support unlocking their phones' bootloader and pray that the phone you bought in the future got tons of custom ROMs ported to it or something, Nokia thinks that locking their phones' bootloader will make those phones more secure, which is purely bull****. If you ABSOLUTELY have to buy a Nokia phone however, go buy an older one, cause the site with unlock keys only support those old phones, and it might be impossible to even unlock new phones coming from Nokia in the future.

Good afternoon,
Thank you very much for all the information you have given me.
It has no solution, I bought an X10 and an X20, because they have Android One and will have updates for 3 years.
I thought I could unlock it and do root, and I see that it is impossible or it is very difficult.

Wait, you bought both? Well, if you're trying to root them, then too bad, it's literally impossible. But if you're just using both phones normally, I would say: They're actually pretty good! The specs are great for medium gaming, the build quality is really nice, the cameras are not bad honestly. They're slightly overpriced, but they felt nice enough to use daily. Too bad Nokia ruined these phones with the bootloader unlocking problem though, and I swear I'll never buy a Nokia again, cause of this problem, even though they might be one of the best phones I've ever used.
Good evening,
I have tried to do what they explain in the article in Spanish: https://www.ayudaroot.com/root/nokia/como-hacer-root-al-nokia-x10/ and it has been impossible to do anything.
I have found the following problems:
1.- The option "Enable OEM unlocking", comes in gray and is not accessible on the smartphone.
2.- You can not extract the "boot.img" file, because at the link that explains how to do it: https://www.ayudaroot.com/actualizar/alternativa-para-conseguir-la-rom-de-un-telefono-movil/ do not explain how to do it for this smartphone, which is "Qualcomm", not "MTK"; with which it is impossible to extract it.
3.- The "Qualcomm" and «ADB» drivers that are installed with the application are not worth connecting the Nokia X10 to the computer, I had to uninstall them so that the computer itself detects the smartphone.
4.- You can not unlock the bootloader in the way they explain it, so nothing can be done.
5.- The video of the end still confuses more, it is not for this smartphone or a similar one.
Therefore, the item is not useful.
Better forget it and not waste time.
Greetings

mine too, but then it's a useless feature anyway, cause Nokia does not let anyone to unlock its phones' bootloaders

Good Morning,
After installing all security updates, it has also been made accessible.
It is no longer gray, but it does not work for nothing, since there is no way to unlock it.

also, I think you should try contacting their customer service, and hope that they'll accept or something. If not, keep on annoying them with the "Can you unlock my phones' bootloaders?" question, and see if they will answer or not.
Hey brothers , am a random guy looking forward to get my brand new Nokia x10 soon. And according to all paragraphs I read above it seems the main thing I need from this device apart from daily usage is inaccessible which it ""unlocking the bootloader"* But am not totally sure if it's still impossible because it's almost a year since you're conversing and it seemed to be impossible according to what I've looked at in your Conversations. Back to the topic- I got a Nokia service-center in my area here so I need your advise if I'll be able to take there the Nokia x10 and they unlock the bootloader "Incase I buy it" on their end because there have access to everything I assume whereas they're working for Nokia but it looks risky for me to get a device before am sure if it'll go up with what I need from it.......In conclusion if any of you knows a method to unlock the bootloader currently "because it's almost a year when it was impossible". You may advise me before making the mistake I'll regret. Goodnight
I've tried everything to get oem unlock to show up and nothing

Mhm me too, but I've got a a03s basically same thing 3gb of ram, 32gb storage, and I've got a galaxy note 9 same issue.. bottom line, Samsung doesn't like you to have your phones bootloader unlocked on some snapdragon devices... My issue is my chipset Is Helio P35 I have no idea what that is, but it's not snapdragon lol, in your case you may have the same chipset, but in my note 9, it's a snapdragon, idk why Samsung does this... Sorry to say buddy

as they said, samsung doesnt like the unlocking of your A02s bootloader because its a snapdragon. However, if you can, try the A03s. It has a mediatek chipset, and should work.

A02s can be unlocked. All you have to do is enable it in the Developer settings, Turn off your device, Go to Download mode by pressing both Volume UP and DOWN button while plugging in your charger or USB cable and then, long press on the Volume UP button as specified on the screen to unlock it.
This will reset the phone and then, after reboot, just enable the developer settings and you should see that OEM Unlocking is greyed out. This means that it has been unlocked.

Keep in mind that some phones are US models, and US Snapdragon models from Verizon generally cannot be unlocked. And keep in mind as well that some models (ex. A037W for A03s) dont support the procedure you provided.
