Hello. I want to add some programs and files to the system/priv-app path. Unfortunately, there is not enough free space for this and it is not possible to copy or transfer the file. (there is about 60 megabytes of space). How can I increase this space?
Is it possible to increase this space by editing the ROM (editing system.new.dat.br) and flashing it? Or is it possible to edit the system image file ( with unpack it ) and move your desired programs into system/priv-app and pack the system image again and finally flash it?
Requires the apps that get moved to /system/priv-apps also to be entered in the admission list, otherwise moving doesn't make any sense, IMO

Where is the admission list and how do I edit it? By editing this file and adding programs, can it be flashed?

On my other Android devices I can simply put a . in front of folders that I don't want the gallery to display (such as avatar pics and shortcut icons and what not) and it wouldn't. Then I could use eStrongs file manager or similar to browse to them when I needed them. I popped a 2GB MicroSD card I had laying around that already had some files on it from another Android device and ALL of the folders with images are showing up in the gallery... even those with a . in front of them.
Is there any way on an Archos 101 to set the Gallery to NOT display items inside of a '.' folder? Seems this is default with other Android devices so I'm hoping it's at least an option on these.
Ideas?
Thanks for the help.

Create a 0kb file called .nomedia. Place it in the folder of items you don't want shown. That should work.

Doesn't appear to work. I searched before posting this and found a few things about .nomedia and thought maybe you had to rename the actual folders w/the images within to .nomedia to hide them? Seems like this would be a PITA way to go about it.
Am I doing something wrong? Any other ideas?

It should work just fine. Did you name the file specifically .nomedia? No ext name. Did you reboot to see if that helps? Did you put the file in the folder of the items you don't want showing?
Here is some more specific instructions (I didn't write them):
1. On your computer, open Notepad or any other text editor
2. Save the blank file with the filename “.nomedia”, make sure that the Save as type is set as “All Files” instead of “Text documents”
3. Copy that file to the folder on your SD card containing picture files you don’t want to show up in the gallery. (Example: If you want to block aDyno image files from coming up, place the .nomedia file in the sdcard/aDyno folder)
4. Reboot your phone and hopefully the unwanted files should no longer be viewable.

Alright, w/more information I tried it again. I created a file just using a file browser on the device. This time around I created a file in Notepad on my PC called .nomedia and made sure the filetype was set to 'all files' before saving and that there was no extension (deleted the .txt) and then copied that file to my Archos 101. I first tried in the folder on the SD card that contained all the folders in question. I rebooted and it didn't seem to help. I then copied the file into each folder and rebooted. Still no dice. Whenever I open Gallery all the folders and images are still there. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to clear a cache or something or delete any tumbnails or ?? I'm sure I'm just doing something wrong but for the life of me I can't figure it out. I keep searching and am coming up with nothing. This was SO easier on my other Android devices as I just put a period in front of the name of the folders I didn't want to display and it was done. Simple as that. This is a royal PITA and I feel I'm not making any progress.

Do either of these allow you to simply hide w/o signing in or encryption? I found two other programs & both required this which I don't want to deal with. Just seems odd that others are saying this is working for them & I'm not having any luck. I don't mind installing an app as long as it works but I'm not sure why my Archos 101 would be different than the rest.

Hey all, I'm a noob. But I got my NT pretty much where I want it to be. I realize now that the extra space is in the data file system (yeah, I can use the extra gigs). Now, my biggest problem is that my .cbz .cbr files do not have a default program or association. This is a problem because my root accessible comic readers will read to the data folder but when you open up the data folder it says nothing is there. At this point, I just need a comic app that links up .cbz .cbr s as the default program for those file types so that I can open the file from on of my file expolorer programs. Or I need to figure out a way that allows my rooted comic apps to actually go into the data folder. Why won't these programs look into the file system past data?
Now,
I did try the permanence method to link a usrdata file to the mnt/internal file, but while it creates the mnt/internal file it does not fill it in with my files...which sucks (I just folled the instructions and I think it may require the snowball mod). I do like the B&N reader for my epubs, so I don't want to use the snowball mod
And even in snowball could not work, in OP is posted that many apps can still be incompatible

Trying to copy my modified camera apk into system/app folder with write access and displays the above error, no space available... any1 else experiencing this?
bootloader unlocked/Rooted.
I've got 1.7gb left of user space and i've deleted a few apps which doesn't make a difference, i've modded some files in system successfully gps.conf, media_profiles.xml.
I've never seen this before with a rooted phone, perhaps the root method has some issues.

Hello Guys,
I am trying to make/edit my first custom rom (forgive my noob mistakes). As base i am using the Oxygen rom. This rom has all his apps stored in system/app. I inserted an launcher(hololauncher), keyboard(custom htcime) and gallery(quickpick) apk in this folder, but after the rom is flashed these apps are causing fc's and the gallery app isnt even flashed.
I know that not every apk can be placed in the system/app folder, but how can i ensure that these apps will install correctly during flashing.
Depends on apps.
The most common mistake is forgetting to set the permissions to rw-r-r.
Also some apps need their lib files (usually end in .so) in a specific location, like quickpic that can't be turned into a system app just by putting it in system/app address.
Edit: you can ensure these apps are installed correctly by testing.
1 install them normally and convert them to system apps.
2 write down where each of their parts end up (some will always need stuff in data/app or something similar.
4 use a root explorer or adb to copy those files to your pc.
5 modify the flashable zip. Add the files you just copied and modify the updater-script to make sure those files get flashed to the correct location (you might need to include mount data commands if any of the files flash to data/)
6 test!
Some apps might require actual edition by decompiling them, but the above should work for most.

How can I convert it to a system app when it already is installed normally ?
I also saw the option to make a data/app folder, isn't that easier ?
(Take in consideration that I don't use kitchen or adb tools, just winrar and notepadcc )
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda app-developers app
Not talking about adb and kitchen.
there are many app managing apps out there (titanium backup, link2sd) that can convert apps to system apps.
The updater script is in META-INF of the flashable zip (can be edited with notepad).
You only need a rooted device to see where the apps keep their data and copy those files.

Yeah, flashing to data app is an option, but if a data wipe or factory reset is applied after flashing the rom (to correct a bootloop for example), those apps are gone.
I had two files named .thumbdata3-1763508120 and .thumbdata3--1967290299 in sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails. It keep generating when I delete them until my memory full. So I dont know exact size of fully grown these files. when I delete them size about 380+ MBs. Google not help me much (except the cure for avoid genereting files) I want to know what they are and deleting them harm the android?

Not possible. I only had images less than 10MB in sdcard while these files 380+MBs. by the way all the thumbnails also in .thumbnails folder explicitly. So clearly thumbnails has nothing todo with these big two files.
Those are the index files of the thumbnails that get's generated by stock camera app. Not using the stock camera app solves this. A simple google gave me this answer.

Yaa. I did. im afraid I cant still find what u are talking about
In simple terms,
1.Stock camera app indexes the thumbnails and saves the respective image's properties in a thumbdata file.
2.The problem is that each and every pic present in your memory card will be indexed in the thumbdata file and even if you remove the image, the indexed properties of the image still remains dormant in the thumb data file.
3.If the removed image is again restored in the memory card, it creates another new id for the image and indexes it once again so two entries are present for a single image (it may be the same image for us but the operating system takes the date of creation of the image in the sd card into consideration so it's another new image for it)
4.This thumbdata file increases in size in time if you keep on adding and deleting images in your sdcard because new entries gets created and old entries are not at all removed and still remains in the thumbdata file as dead weight.
5. Eventually it's size increases to hundreds of megabytes that's why you have a heavy thumbdata file even though at the particular point of time your gallery is only few megabytes because you have added and deleted files before and those entries remain there in the thumbdata files.
6. This thumbdata file can be deleted with no hesitation what so ever because it's not so important and it eventually gets generated again.
7. You may ask "what is the purpose of this thumbdata files?" the main purpose is to load images faster into memory using the indexes generated so that when you open apps like gallery it doesn't lag to display the thumbnails.
8. That's all I know . I might be wrong somewhere but that's the whole point of thumbdata files generated, getting so heavy.

Solution is to create a file with exact same name including the period in front . Place your .thumbdata3--1967290299 file into the dcim/thumbnails folder . You may have to use your file manager to allow hidden files to be viewed. Make sure there is no extension just exactly .thumbdata3--1967290299 as shown or whatever thumbdata file you may have. Now delete the old file andriod had made. Will keep andriod from making huge index files . This occurs when using stock camera , this solution will fix It. Hit thx if this helped you
