If this is the wrong section I apologize. I just picked up the Archos 48 Internet tablet with the DVR station off of the Archos Store. I thought $299 was a good deal with the free dvr station.
First hand reviews. This is my second archos, i used to have the old school 160gb so i am familiar with its defaults and capabilities.
Battery Life - not a huge concern for me, its normally plugged in. But i got a good 5 hours of out of it with wifi on.
Hard drive - 500gb - perfect for the music/video collector
OS - 1.6 - Weird, just weird. It works, and I understand it, but there are some drawbacks, and maybe you folks can help.
1. I installed appslib and the amazon app store(works perfect). However, you can only install apps to the system space, not the hard drive. So there is a limit to having apps on there. Once i got the 3rd angry birds on it, it yelled at me and said no space available. There is 500gb????? Can if be used?
2. Can you put 2.2/froyo or 2.3/GB?
3. Rooting??? Can it be done? Maybe its too new?
Sync - Special usb cable. Looks like you have to use the micro usb that comes with it. If you use a different one, the files will not sort correctly. Sounds funny, but Putting it in hard drive mode is easier/quicker for me. When I used a standard one, the cover art would not list in the Cover's section when searching for music, however all the music is under the Hard Drive section and I could listen to it all and cover art showed. Not a big deal, just weird.
Browser - Works fine, I would like to install a different one, but I am having problems putting the Android App Market on there. Any ideas?
Firmware is the most updated one.
If anyone can help, or lend ideas, please let me know
Jon
From what I understand, the Archos 48 IT is sort of a rehash of the Archos 5 IT, which was a Gen 7 device. Any info you can find on the Archos 5 IT should apply. Check out ArchosFans and OpenAOS for more. This section is for Gen 8 devices, so I don't think anything you find here will be very helpful. Good luck!
I can help you a bit i had have the A5IT
1) You cant increase the internal storage (for apps) yet, but the guys from openaos maybe work on that at a costum rom
2) there are some 2.0/2.1 and maybe some 2.2 ports too but they are buggy from my last view i have sold my archos 5, bought a new one you should ask the guys from openaos
3) same answer as in 1) & 2)
Xda isnt for gen7, its for gen8 the best gen7 communitys are archoslounge, archos forum and for the hacking sections (most interesting for you ) openaos
Hello everyone, As I'm testing the tablets to see which one to keep, I found a Toshiba media player quite useful. It's like media suite which also lets you stream musics, videos, pictures from your PC using Windows media player. I installed the apk on Samsung Tab 10.1 (unrooted), and it worked perfectly.
I cannot do any screen grab, as I've not rooted it yet. But believe me it does work beautifully. The video player also lets you skip to the next video or go back to the previous one (if you have more than one in a folder).
Install instruction:
1. copy the ToshibaMediaPlayer.apk to any folder of your choice on /sdcard/ location.
2. Tap once on the ToshibaMediaPlayer.apk and select 'Install'.
3. Enjoy.
NOTE: I copied the apk from Toshiba /System/app/ using root explorer and used the same to install the apk. I'm sure it should work with other file manager as well.
The apk is 10 MB, therefore apk size limit prevents from uploading on xda. Please use the multiupload link to download the file.

Great app.

Thanks! It fixes my issue with some videos not stretching the whole way so i'd have black bars on the top/bot and the sides! I wonder what other video player apps there are that might work. I definitely like this over the honeycomb gallery player.
Gonna try this, thanks. Mobo player works well most of the time but has it's hickups still.

Sry for the OT but i install this on my TF101 and it's working great, only problem is that only plays what stock plays... Is there a way to use an external player like mobo or vitalplayer?
As someone else mentioned it only really plays what the stock player plays and doesn't really have much in terms of options. Sticking with Mobo Player for now. Thanks for your work though.

Hi,
Can anyone who had Toshiba Thrive test out if it plays videos on wifi from a network share like a network hard drive or from a shared folder on a networked computer without first coping the whole movie to the tablet?
I tried Acer Iconia, Morotolla Xoom and not matter what file manager or video player I used, they all first start coping a movie to the tablet and only after that they start playing. I also have Acronis 101 and that one doesn't copy videos and opens them right away and starts playing.
Also can you read external hard drives in NTFS format when connecting it to the USB port on the tablet?
we're missing some libraries that we need to get DLNA working. it's looking for jnidhsdk, but can't find it. can you look in /system/lib/ on the toshiba and see if there's anything that might look useful?
better yet, if you could just extract the whole folder, I'll have a look myself.
Thanks,
Sam

A roundabout solution is to use the Plex app to stream movies stored in your pc/mac on the GT10, though it will set you back 5 dollars.
And thanaks to the OP for the toshiba media player which is quite neat.
Any chance you could also port the toshiba file manager, which I hear is quite good too?
Is Acronis 101 an app? Or a tablet?

Archos 101 is a tablet. Bad viewing angles, low memory but is light and cheap. It's on Froyo but it can see FAT and NTFS drives and opens any video from network drives shared over wireless network.
They have just announced new tablets on Honeycomb that will cost $279 for 8.1 inch and $349 for 10.1 inch and they will both have 1.5 GHz dual core CPU. both will come with 16 Gb flash memory but for $50 more you can order the same model with 250Gb SSD that is only 3 mm thicker than the same model with flash memory. Also they have full size USB port and you can buy a $49 USB 3G stick for your own data plan. That stick completely hides in the tablet and doesn't stick out and you can use it on your laptop/computer as well. I think I'm going to wait till september and buy one then.

I used to have a Archos 101 Gen8 before i sold it to buy a Transformer... their (Archos) Music/Video players are awesome, if only the TF could stream from SMB and with subtitles.
The "Acronis" was what got me lost

Acronis was a typo, I use both and guess my fingers typed it automatically when I meant the tablet.
Well, for the new tablets they are planning on getting a better screen. If they put 1Gb or ram I'll buy it. The old one had very little ram so it kept crying for low memory when installing apps. But multimedia side of it was great. So far I haven't found that on any Honeycomb tablets.
thanks alot !!
Worked for me instantly and picked up my TVersity Media server without issue. Playback was perfect, but I do wish there was a way to adjust the app to access my home network when away. I'm not a fan of Plex... I prefer TVersity.
please re-upload te apk file...
Yes if possible please re-upload. Or if anyone want to give me the apk I will upload it. Thanks in advance.
Hi guys, did a search and couldn't really find this topic on the forums. Could anyone please post the best(hopefully free) way to get my blu-rays onto the prime? I used to use cucusoft when i first got my ipod touch back in the day and that worked awesome! i don't know if they make one for the prime but something like that would be great cause it was sooo easy and the video and sound were on point. Thanks in advance for the help.
What about an external Blu-Ray drive.
With the Transformer dock you could use it's USB port to attach the external drive and boom.
Now you will just need drivers.
Anandtech did a review with a 40Mbit/s video. It was a 10 minute segment of Quantum of Solace and it was 2.8GB in size. The full 15GB version of the movie played fine as well. The biggest pain was copying it.
You could convert them to MKV. Anandtech suggested getting the DICE Player as it supports all the features of tegra 3.

Unfortunately even if we could do it, It's not only a driver issue. If it's anything like a pc it needs additional software to play Bly-rays.
I use anydvd to rip the disc to an ISO then use handbrake to encode. There is also a one click app they have for OG TF but I can't remember he name.
I thanked all of you guys for responding so quick. I was wanting something like a one-click deal like RussianMenace said to convert the file to a format that I can load onto the prime. I've only used software to do it so i don't know how to do it the "long way." And so you know, my PC has a blu-ray player drive. Can anyone explain how to convert the disc to a file on my pc that i can move to the prime or tell me of a program?
I've got a Archos 70 250GB. The harddisk died (also tried it on my pc, didn't work either). Ive read some topic about replacing the harddrive by first cloning the content to the new drive. But I can't clone the drive since it died.
So now I have a empty Archos 70 and I'm ordering a 'new' SSD (if this project doesn't work out, I'll use it for my laptop). I guess that the tablet won't work when I just put everything back together.
Questions:
-do you also think that my tablet won't recognize the new drive when I just install it in the tablet?
-does someone have the cloned data for me so I can put this on the new drive?
-are there other solutions to get this working?
As far as I know the HDDs for Archos tabs are watermarked by HDD's serial number and you cant just buy the same HDD from the local store. It can be made with HDD from ur local store but you must have some knowledge how to make it. I've heard that there is a guy who made it. I think the repair will cost you more then the device itself.
Very simple, you should format new hdd by Archos tablet from menu Recovery to your tablet can be enable new hdd

This is incorrect, there are various videos and guides on replacing / upgrading the hard drive without more than opening up the a70 and fitting a new drive in:
http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=73&t=56849
- for example.
Why just replace with a 250? Spend 50 bucks and get a 750gb hard drive, you will have all of the music you can stomach!
Hello!
so i recently watched an old UK TV show episode of the Gadget Show, in which the presenter Jon Bentley road tested 3 unusual GPS addons in france,
of them was an IPhone, a PSP and an Archos 5.
i have the tomtom app and i do own a PSP
the Archos is the confusing one, even if i do get the device i will need a compatible Version of N-Drive plus all the maps (UK at least) for it.
if anyone has an Archos 5 or any device with N-Drive on it i would like if i could get a dump of them,
there is an APK for N-Drive 11 which seems to work but i do not have an Archos 5 to try it on.
I Hope this doesn't bother anyone
