[Q] Best versatile build.prop Market Fix? - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As I go through yet another build.prop market fix, I can't help but wonder: is there a build.prop market fix (or any kind of fix) that gives you the best of both worlds (all 2.x and 3.x apps are visible in the market, working Flash Player, runs 3.x apps and maybe even Netflix)? If not, anything close to it (I can live without running 3.x apps)?
P.S. - If possible, I prefer to stick with Froyo/2.2 since the display quality and video playback & hardware acceleration performance has been superior to 2.3.x and 3.x ROMs in my experiences so far.

HTC Vision gets Netflix good for GB. I also don't notice anything missing from the market. Guess you could use vegan 5.1.1 and throw in the Netflix patch and then mod build.prop and see what happens. Breaks YouTube app by the by but browser viewing still works peachy.

You can't run 3.0 (Honeycomb) code on 2.3 (Gingerbread) or 2.2 (Froyo).
No build.prop will ever give you that.
The build.prop is the properties of your build....ie what OS, manufacturer, some basic settings and such. Edits of it may allow you to see certain things in the Market but seeing them doesn't mean they will install or run.
If you want Netflix (and now Hulu Plus), CM7.03 stable is your best option. It also sees nearly everything that will function on the tablet in the Market.
I miss nothing from VEGAn5.1.1 now that I'm on CM7.03. I've gained a ton (better stability, WiFi location services, better market (no fixes needed) access, Netflix, etc...

I keep hearing CM 7.0.3 is the best option. It still doesn't have native Nvidia drivers, correct?

That's correct, but they did add in some hardware acceleration code of their own to improve video playback. It's not perfect, but most videos seem to work pretty well for me.

Worked like a charm... except [modded/patched] Netflix doesn't play video for me (it looks like its going to play, shows play/pause and seek control but goes back to the main screen almost immediately). No biggie, I rarely watch Netflix anyway.
I see everything in the market and all the T/HD games actually run. Thanks!

You can clear app data for netflix from manage apps then fix permissions with cwm. This fixes a lot of Netflix issues (chipmunk, slo-mo, bad banding)

Did you just change the device to HTC Vision? Or did you copy a complete build.prop from somewhere? Link?
Thank you!

I just changed it to HTC Vision in build.prop. Netflix also works now (from the Market).

CM7 and Moonsoon's Vulkano

Well I am on my third Gingerbread rom (6th overall rom) and I finally have gotten the Vulkano to stream in all situations. Last night I downloaded CM7's nightly build 58 and flashed my G-Tablet. Installation was very smooth using clockworkmod and all 128 apps were restored using Titanium back with no problems. I had wiped and formated just about everything I could before doing the installation. After that I went to the market and downloaded the Vulkano player and at last sucess. I was able to stream from the vulkano both locally and over the internet. I realize some other people have had sucess using Corwins rom (CM7 based), and that was going to be next if this did not work. I had previously tried G-Harmony with no sucess, and then Vegan Tab GB with limited succes. The strange thing with Vegan Tab was it would stream over the internet however it would not stream when I was home locally. Watching the bandwidth I was getting at home the software player seemed to choke everytime it was over 1 mb/sec. When I was out of the house and connected over the internet it worked fine at speeds anywhere from 300-900k. This leads me to believe the hardware accelleration that is now included in CM7 is working with this app allowing it to run over my local network. Another thing that I have struggled with is getting recorded shows downloaded to my G-Tab. Well I still can not get it to work with any rom and the vulkano player but I have a work around for now. By down loading the videos using UPNPdownloader (avlalable in the market for free) you can then watch the recordings using MOBOPlayer or Rockplayer. Now for even better news when Rockplayers asks if you want to use hardware decoding and you answer yes the videos run close to flawlessly. On the other two GB roms it obviously would not work using the hardware decoding. They did run on the roms using the software decoding but they would stutter even at the lowest recorded resolutons. When playing high quality recordings they would be unwatchable due to the delay in video processing in which the sound which was a full 3-5 seconds ahead of the picture. This would make all sense since the Vulkano records in the H.264 video format and if I am not mistaken that is the portion of hardware accelleration that is working. Well I hope this helps someone else.
Lastly I do miss the Vegan Tab interface, the VT Launcher was very smooth and the rom was much more tablet oriented. I can not wait until gojimi includes this in his rom since the rom is CM7 based if I am not mistaken. Please excuse any typos and good luck.

Interesting. I have a vulkano, and am running vegantab with pershoot's latest overclocked kernel - I have not gotten around to getting it set up, but under that other OS (er, iOS?) I would pull over 2Mbit/sec (more like 3) for local HD content, and 1.5+ for remote (yay for comcast HSI) - I should test it out. I'll let you know what I see tomorrow!

Sounds good I am interested to see what happens. I am currently streaming between 1.6 and 2.0 mb/secs locally using the wireless router Verizion put in when I got Fios. My iphone streams locally between 300k - 600k usually.

VeganGinger just gives me a black screen and spinning "buffering" with the Vulkano inside the home. Meh. Not so good!
For the record, Vulkano (Monsoon) refuses to support G Tab and Android 2.2 at all. I'm now in a legal war with these clowns. be careful on CM7 as you may still encounter buffering quite often and screen lockups.
Vulkano issues on CM7 for Evo
I have the Vulkano player working flawlessly on my Nook Color running CM7.1 RC1
However, I cannot for the life of me get it working CM7 and my Evo 4G. Tried the stable and testing builds. I'm still debating if I really want to move to a nighly, but I might just do it to see if it works and restore back to 7.1 RC1.
BTW, I'm so happy they finally have a root process for the Evo 4G on Gingerbread!

Hello,
I am trying to make if possible the android vulkano application to work with 4.4.2 or Lollipop and stream while the screen is off.
This was possible with my 2.3.7. But with newer devices seems impossible. I am digging up some old vulkano posts incase somebody figured this out.
Thank you very much.

[Q] What's the most stable Froyo ROM?

I currently have 'VEGAn-TAB ROM BETA 5.1 FINAL' installed as of yesterday and it's already crashed while I was watching a video. I know Gingerbread doesn't have video acceleration so I would like to avoid that if possible.
They're all pretty darn stable. And they're all listed at my site.

It may not be the rom that caused this...what video player was being used? what file format was the video in? when did you select if you were given the option of hard coding or soft coding? Where there are plethora of apps running in the background? What exactly was the "crash, forced reboot, lock up, video/audio distortion? Did the video file play properly on another device, ie your computer?
There are many players out there, some work well, some work kinda "eh." Some can't handle some video formats, some can play them, but not properly. Some vieo formats require decoding, hard or soft (I like hard when speaking of ice cream, but software decoding ususally works for my videos).
I'm using BC (the 1.2 version of VEGAn 5.1.1), and rockplayer to play video. I've been thinking of trying moboplayer, since it seems to have received rave reviews on this and other forums. I've been able to play .avi files with software decoding. MP4 files play fine, but the quality isn't as good..they're made for mobile devices with really tiny screens.
When I rip or download a movie, I almost ALWAYS make sure that it runs fine on my Acer netbook (same screen size) to get a general idea of what I can expect on the G-Tab.
in a nutshell, your issue may not be the rom at all...VEGAn 5.1.1 is probably one of, if not THEE most stable 1.1 based rom out there.

Apps and features not working with the unofficial ICS 4.0.3 update

Updated my tab to the ICS update that was linked in the general forum prior to the mediapad gettings its own forum (hurrah).
Was hoping that the tab will be blazing fast after the update, sadly don't see much of an improvement.
However the big issue is some apps are dog slow, or refuse tow work. If you have any problems with apps with the update please list and tell if you know of resolution.
Let me start.
1. ezPDF reader - Takes ages to load a PDF after the update. Rendering is very very slow.
2. Adobe PDF reader - Fast than ezPDF, but still the rendering is slower. I was expecting the 2D rendering performance to improve with ICS, but sadly no luck.
3. Browsers are very slow. Though the benchmarks might be different, the actual page load times are now slower with the native browser and on dolphin HD.
2. The very useful feature that showed running apps, and recent used apps is now missing, and you have the generic list of apps
All the adobe apps like touch, proto etc. They hang on a black screen.
Latest copilot live just fc.
Sent from my HUAWEI MediaPad using Tapatalk
Amazon Kindle (v3.3 & up) not working: all books content (text & graphic) is blank.
(it's working on ICS Beta prior this leak)
Now using old v3.2 & working well (but of course, font is less pretty & no pdf support).
1. Google Play keeps restarting
2. Google Play has issues handling multiple threads (loading an app detail screen while several apps are being updated, results in lost connection errors)
Not sure if the Google Play problems are related to ICS or the device.

Perhaps the device. Mine has been working just fine.
Quickoffice Pro HD doesn't work. I had purchased/installed it for Springboard on 3.2, but after going to 4.0.3 it was not listed in My Apps when I go to Google Play on the tablet. When going to Google Play on my PC, the app shows up as installed - but with a note that it is incompatible with all of my devices.

Try setting the screen to high resolution and I'd bet that you will be able to install the app.

Good thought - I had tried that but no luck.
I was able to get Swype keyboard to install by going to high resolution, where it had previously not worked due to incompatible resolution.
Zinio isn't working for me.. App works but the magazines are just rendered as black pages.
Put SketchBook Pro on the list, fc on start.
Additionally:
* Autodesk SketchBook Express - does not start
even if there is a statement on playstore page "√ Now runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Optimized for screen sizes 7 inches and greater."
* Navfree - blackscreen on startup (was fine on HC)
HDMI out - working, but the picture looks like a low resolution upscaled to a higher resoution.. also, when the cable is connected before enabling the HDMI output function, you need to disconnect and reconnect.. otherwise you'll get no picture at all..
tried this with HC 3.2 (B016) on the same device, with same cable/TV (Sony Bravia KDL-40W4000), and the picture looks great (like a real HD 720p/1080p resolution).. also you don't need to reconnect the cable..
EDIT: tested on two more LCD TV's..
Sony Bravia 37" (full hd) - the picture doesn't display at all.. it only blinks for a split second...
Philips 32" (hd) - the picture is displayed, but it's the same as described above with the KDL-40W4000
EDIT 27.3.2012: tested with the latest International version S7-301u_V100R002C002B008, and it's still the same :\
EDIT 29.3.2012: tested with PC monitor.. based on the information that the information menu of the monitor provides, that standar output is 640x480, which si far from HD/FULL HD .. and maybe that's the reason why it looks so ugly on most TVs..
but.. when the HDMI output is changed in the hidden menu (description here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23862818&postcount=5 ) the resolution was 720x480...
Gameboid - only showing the top row of pixels.
What a bummer... I want to play pokemon.
EDIT: Turns out its all GBA emulators. DroidEmu has the same issue.
Foxit Reader crashes when loading a PDF. Once a PDF file is selected it shows its processing for around 1-2 sec and then crashes.
Netflix
Looks like Netflix isn't working with the new ROM. I get the opening screen where I pick a movie but when it starts to play I just get a black screen. Maybe this is a DRM issue not sure but it sucks.
Kirby
Update netflix is working like a charm with this latest ROM.

[Q] CM7: Netflix Streaming in HD?

Hi All,
I've been trying to figure out how to get my CM7 NT to stream Netflix in the HD quality of the stock Nook ROM.
I've tried several edits to the build.prop (ro.product.____ and ro.build.___), to no avail.
Are there any specific lines in the current CM7 Internal build.prop that prevent Netflix from streaming in HD, like how the NT comes originally? Or is it some other issue with the CM7 build? Has anybody on CM7 gotten this to work?
Many thanks in advance.
Unless there's been a development I'm not aware of as of right now, you can't, it has to do with the fact that hardware acceleration isn't fully supported in non Stock ROMs. In addition the stock app is believed to be coded differently for the hardware.

I wish that part about the stock app was true, but the stock app works identically to the version that you get in the Google Play store. Reinstalling the stock version on CM7 via Titanium Backup gets you the same low-quality video and delayed audio that you'd get on the downloaded app.
But hardware acceleration will be here, it's just taking a little while. We're very fortunate to have Rebellos, a recognized XDA developer, joining the new-kernel project. He says he plans to start contributing to the project in about a week.

Ah, so it's a hardware acceleration issue then, rather than Netflix<-> build.prop device incompatibility? I thought that was done and fixed in the latest CM7 release?
Also stoked to have Rebellos on board.
i thought cm7 had full HW acceleration- and from using it vs using the rooted nook tablet it DOES play movies Better (i can play/stream a bluray.mp4 file on CM7 Fine, it stutters and hangs using the rooted nook(mx video player streaming over my wireless network for both examples) , it is CM9 that is having problem with the ducati timer conflict with backlight timer....the issue is the hd version of netflix if i remember correctly required the locked bootchain blah blah to get the hd version. not sure if that version will run on cm7 i just installed netflix from googlestore and use that.

If that were true, I think we'd already have hardware acceleration in CM9. After all, it would mean that source code for a hardware-accelerated graphics driver on the Nook Tablet was available. The whole reason Rebellos is joining the project is because we lack said source code.
Celtic did fix a video performance bug in CM7, but as far as I know it was mainly related to video playback and decoding, not graphics drivers. I might be wrong about that (I'm not a developer myself, I just follow it closely) but that's what the situation looks like right now.
Like I said, there's no difference between the Google Play downloadable Netflix app and the one that comes with your Nook Tablet. The key difference is the underlying firmware - stock, for some reason, gets HD-quality and synced up sound while CM7 gets low-quality and delayed sound. I've been following this one issue closely since it's my one pet peeve with the custom firmware we've got available. Hopefully, though, the devs will sort it out. They all seem like competent and talented folks.
the problem is 99.9% of the universe apparently for cm9(ICS) uses gptimer 11 for ducati...and the backlight some other timer
the nook tablet -currently- HAS to run the backlight on.....gptimer 11, the devs- i believe- have found a ducati on a different timer and they are working on adapting it to run on the nook tablet, once that is fixed- the cm9 devs will progress faster

BBC News app

Has anyone gotten the current Market BBC News app to play videos? I'm running CM 10.2.1 and have both Flash and MX Player installed but if I select a video that accompanies a news story I get some kind of player with a "loading" circle on the screen--forever.
For a lark I thought to try an old version of the app that I use on my NST (although there is no sound on the NST....) and that version (1.3.4) brings up the MX Player and everything works fine, although I do think the still image resolution is not as good as on the current Market app.
Any solutions (other than continue to use the old version)?
Just in case someone comes across this thread later, I can confirm that version 2.5.3 WW (BBC Mobile News WW) works great on the NT running CM 10.2, videos included
Newer versions after July - No Video on CM
On my Verizon S3, the BBC News app version 3.4.0.43 GNL does not show videos on CM12.1 (nightly 10/30/15) nor has it worked since version 2.5.5 WW. After that, they dramatically changed the app with new features and display capacities. Video has never worked since.
HOWEVER, it works on another ROM, AICP, which has some CM in it, though I don't know what else it's blended with. I wish I could distinguish the issue here because the newer ones are way more interesting than the older version , one of which I have saved via TiBu and restore when I get sick of not being able to watch videos.
It' just occured to me to take a logcat when I try next time.
EDIT: well, I didn't realize I was on a nook thread, but the issue might be the same.

Yeah, I actually prefer the older version. Just don't like a lot of options to wade through and not being able to get rid of stuff I don't want to see. I just recently got an LG Optimus Zone 2 to replace my much-loved Insignia Pilot MP3 player that finally died. I let the BBC app update from the market and it worked fine (running KitKat) but I didn't like it as I said, so I replaced it with the older version, which also works just fine.
