[Q] HOX+ stuck in airplane mode, comes out of it for short periods - HTC One X+

My HOX+ (international model) worked fine for months, but yesterday it suddenly lost signal and now it's stuck in the airplane mode. When that happened, I didn't reboot, upgrade or otherwise tampered with the phone. The phone was rooted and had Elegancia ROM 4.5.0 installed long time ago.
This problem is mentioned in few other threads, but in my case the phone randomly comes out of the airplane mode by itself for few minutes and then goes back. During these short periods everything works - i.e. I can make calls and get 3G data and see IMEI. That happens once every few hours. Perhaps this was the case for other people as well, but nobody mentioned that so far. Wi-Fi does work all the time, though - so only cellular network is broken.
I wiped cache, simulated battery pull, and installed Elegancia ROM 5.2.0 and re-flashed boot.img from it. Nothing helps. It looks like hardware problem, but before I try repair options, perhaps anyone here has other ideas.
Speaking of hardware repairs, does anyone have experience with repairing rooted HTC phones ? I understand that unlocking bootloader voids warranty, but they will still repair it for a fee - right ?

Can you remember when those situations are happening if the cellular network signal is weak in this area? Is this problem occurring everywhere or specifically in a zone area e.g. only work, only at home, etc.?
Are you using the Power Saver mode?
Maybe your SIM card is just a bit loose in it's support, try to install a "scotch" tape cut-to-size on its back, it only takes 5 minutes to try and its free!

Not at all! Your warranty with your provider can be void, but not with HTC.
Many reports of the same issue with the Nexus Galaxy HERE

Yes, I am absolutely positive now it's a hardware problem. The same SIM card works perfectly in another phone, and other SIM cards don't work in this HOX+ with the same symptoms. The phone doesn't even notice absence of SIM card when there's none - it says "No Service", and doesn't say "No SIM Card", which it normally did before.

That is not what HTC told me. Their phone representative said that unlocking bootloader voids the warranty, regardless of how your purchased the phone.
I was ready to go ahead with paid repair, but after checking IMEI number, they told me this is a global (C2) model, originating in UK, and not only their warranty doesn't apply here, HTC USA won't even repair it for a fee because they don't have necessary parts. This was factory-unlocked international HTC One X+ (model S728E), purchased on US eBay, and yes - it is UK model, so I'm stuck now. I'll update when I talk to HTC in UK.

Update
As promised, I am posting an update to this story.
I called HTC UK and they said if the problem is not caused by firmware modification, it will be covered by warranty.
I filled RMA request on HTC UK support site, but then they changed their mind and told me that repair will cost because of the unlocked bootloader.
I didn't have any other options at that point, so I installed stock ROM, unrooted and re-locked bootloader and sent the phone to UK service center. I used the cheapest USPS shipping (about $20) and it took about 2 weeks for the phone to get there from NY, but once it got there, I received back repaired working phone here in the US in a couple of days. I was not charged any money for this, after all.
The serial number of the phone remained the same, but IMEI changed, which confirms that the problem was in hardware indeed.
By the time I got the phone back from UK, my eBay seller obtained RMA from US HTC (which they denied me directly).
This whole experience demonstrated that:
US HTC support is useless. Everything several of their representatives told me turned out to be outright BS.
UK HTC support is excellent.
HTC doesn't seem to have consistent policy regarding unlocked bootloaders. Formally unlocking voids warranty (at least on non-developer units), but in reality it probably doesn't, if the the hardware is faulty

My experience
HI,
I have an HOX which had the standard HTC firmware from new. The battery needed replacing so contacted my network provider who agreed to “replace” the battery for me.
Received the phone back, not my phone but a refurbished phone which now had branded firmware, not overly happy about that! But I did have “my” phone back.
After reinstalling all the apps I use regularly and using the phone for three days, I noticed that I could not get any network coverage for approx. 24 hours. I called at the network provider shop where the assistant said that it was unusual and appeared to be stuck in airplane mode, which I hadn’t noticed. After using factory reset and a new sim the problem was still evident.
Two options; return it to the network provider for repair or try one of the larger shops which have a technician on site.
Whilst deciding what to do (over lunch) my phone started working correctly all the network information appeared in the “about” menu, great, sorted. I assumed the new sim need to “register” its self :/ However, several hours later the phone again showed no network signal!!!!
I just left the phone to one side and decided that I should send it back for repair, again.
Having left the phone untouched, it again started working, the only thing that I noted was that each time it started working it had turned off power saver mode. I have left power saver off and for the last 24 hours the problem has not reoccurred. Early days, but fingers crossed
In summary I guess it is a firmware problem based on my experience.
I hope this helps anyone who experiencing the same problems.

warranty repair and software update

ok, this may seem a little complex, but il explain as best as i can.
i bought my HD2 T8585 from mobileponesdirect.co.uk, with a contract with t-mobile UK. after issues with stock, i received the phone (3 weeks after ordering it!) it came in a generic box, with no branding, and seperatly, a little plastic case containing my sim card. the phone was the unlocked generic HD2, as it contained youtube app, and other software tmobile remove. tried a virgin and orange sim in it and both worked.
now ive had to send it back because of a battery fault (the battery lasts about 5 hours at best). i phoned mobile phones direct, who told me my warranty was with htc directly, so phoned htc, and they told me to contact my network. t-mobile said it was mobilephonesdirect, as i purchased the phone from them, and they simply supply the sim card only. i went into my local tmobile shop and they took it in for repair under warranty, despite the issues of who is actually responsible. the only issue that came up was the 'mandatory software update' t-mobile apply to their phones (this is going by the info given to me at the shop). this is done as part of the routine diagnostics, to ensure the problem isnt a software fault. after explaining my handset was factory unlocked, i was told it will probably be locked to t-mobile after the update. as the phone is verging on unusable, i had to send it away. the t+c sheet i had to sign also mentions the software update, but only warns about data loss, not the handset being locked.
my questions are:
is what the guy in the shop said true (i.e, will t-mobile lock my phone)?
can a software update lock a handset? even if the hanset was never sim locked? the S/N and IMEI will surly prevent this?
would i be able to use HSPL and flash a generic ROM (1.66wwe and update radio to 2.11/2.12) to unlock it?
are t-mobile allowed to do this (lock my handset)? and would/could i be provided with an unlock code free of charge?
i am on a contract with t-mobile, but i use virgin (its part of a now non existant virgin media bundle and costs me next to nothing!) and also have started using tesco for work. ive been told virgin will work, as it uses t-mobile, but tesco uses o2.
any help would be appreciated, ive may have to wait 28 days before my phone will return to me, until then ive been given the amazing loan phone of a motorola c140...'it has a colour screen' was its main selling point from the t-mobile guy. annoyingly thats locked to t-mobile as well, so now i have 3 phones, the c140 using virgin, a nokia 6230i using t-mobile and a 3310 using the tesco sim.
Under Sale of goods act and distant selling regulations (items purchased online), your contract is with mobileponesdirect, they are responsible for warranty repairs/replacement.
It is very unlikely that t-mobile will lock your phone, as this will involve them altering the root programming of the the phones processor, (like the bios of a computer) which is normally only done by HTC, to 'brand/lock' phones before they send phones out to mobile phone companies, like t-mobile.
I doubt if t-mobile would bother investing in equipment they do not need.
A software update (like the operating system of computer) does not lock phone.
So it is unlikely points 3 and 4 will apply.
that is exactly what i was thinking, as flashing the ROM doesnt unlock the phone, so flashing it with a branded ROM wouldnt lock it, thanks for clearing that up.
mobile phones direct, while very competitivly priced on both handsets and contracts, have crap customer service. i thought the warranty would be with them, as they are the ones who supplied the handset, and t-mobile (as the rightly stated) only provide the service, and not the handset. as the phone has already been sent off, i will have to wait and see. t-mobile may refuse to touch it if the handset isnt from them, and will send it back as it was when i sent it to them, in which case, il have to get on the phone to mobile phones direct and get them to take it in. thanks for clearing that up
on a slightly different topic, ive been told by t-mobile the warranty is 2 years, instead of the normal 1 year, due to a lot of contracts now becoming 24 month. is this universally true? or is it down to what the network provides?. the reason i ask is im paying £8.99 a month for a premium insurance package (not through t-mobile) which covers everything that could go wrong, when if i have a 2 year warranty, i would only need accidental damage cover.
t mobile are wrong, if you had a contract with them, not just sim only, then yes, their own warranty may be for two years. They shouldn't have taken the phone from you, and they may still send it back as 'not theirs'.
Your warranty should have been handled either by phones direct as the seller, or HTC themselves. (1 year manufacturers warranty applies still)
the contract i have wasnt bought as sim only (and is certainly not sim only price!) and the phone was free with the contract, so i would assume i have a normal contract. i was told the warrentys had increased to 2 years on most high end phones, as most contracts are heading for 2 years, but maybe i was told this on the assumption that i had got the phone direct from them and not through a 3rd party. not much i can do now but wait and hope it gets fixed, im not too bothered who fixes it as long as it works! wish i had posted on here before going into the shop

HELP! No Call Audio & Call Disconnects

Symptoms:
- On making a call, starting from today (really yesterday), I get no audio going in or out. However both speakers are work fine, because the earpiece makes a beep sound to let me know call forwarding is active. The rear one works for everything.
- Headphones in call don't work either
- Sometimes I get sound for one call until I hang up, or it's very crackly and
useless.
- While ringing when dialing out (or rather, when you WOULD be hearing ringing if it was working), sometimes it'll cut the call and say "OUT OF SERVICE AREA", and then I'll get the circle with the line through it where signal is supposed to be. Signal is back seconds later.
- Data and texting work fine.
Things I've tried:
- I was on Omega ROM 13.1 with Siyah 1.5.3, although I've read online people have this issue bone stock, unrooted.
- Flashed stock insecure kernel
- Flashed several different modems
- ODIN'd back to the ROM that came with the phone (was originally a real-SIM-unlocked, Vodafone Germany i9300).
- Wiped everything possible
I'm willing to donate via Paypal to whoever has a definitive fix for this problem. It's really driving me insane that I don't have a working phone for calls. Worst case I'll call Samsung, but I expect they'll charge me an arm and a leg, if they even accept it considering it's from Germany originally (bought it off Amazon in June). This seems like a software issue, not a hardware issue consider both speakers still physically work fine. The issue is, what the hell is causing it if it came about completely randomly, and is happening across all ROMs, kernels, and modems that I flash?
Before you ask, no the Accessibility Setting for turning off all sounds is not on.
Thanks in advance for anyone that replies.
I use omega rom and I've had this a lot, I found that restoring the apn using titanium backup caused the problem, so I now use a apn backup app. Sometimes flashing the modem twice, clear cache, fix permissions helps. I always got call audio if I flashed back the base Rom. On ics, I could flash modems Willy nilly and 90% would work, not so on jelly bean. However, on omega v25 I can flash any modem and it works. Lh4 is about the best modem for me,
After flashing Rom (with full wipe), check call audio, make 1 change at a time so you know what removes sound. You may have to clear cache/fix permissions after certain changes.

It just happened totally randomly (as in it began totally randomly). Flashing the ROM again helped for one or two calls. Then back to square one. Tried everything possible including wiping and restoring the EFS. I'm not sure what kind of issue this is because the speaker itself works and so do data and texting, but not calls.

Well try downloading your region modem as I have experienced that problem when I was on xxxxDl12. try "15". If it doesn't help, then your region modem for your device should do the trick

I'm in the US so there's no regional modem. But I've tried every modem and none have solved the issue. And this issue came up after 4 months of no issues. I'm hoping there's no hardware issues.

Product F(RED), did you get a solution to this issue? i'm having the /exact/ same thing with my i9300 in the US. I'd also be willing to donate to whom ever documents a solution for this issue. I'll supply any information or do any action (short of bricking the phone) to fix it..
I had to ship it to the sellers on Amazon (who are in Germany, where the phone came from originally), and they shipped it to Samsung for repair, and then back to me. Samsung in any EU-member country (including the UK) will repair a Galaxy S3 from any other EU country, and my S3 has a 2 year warranty instead of 1. It was a hardware component failure (not sure which) which required a new motherboard.
Guess what. It's happening again. I don't know what to do. I don't have the time or money to keep shipping this thing abroad to get it fixed. -_-
Ok, is anybody still monitoring this situation? I have had this exact same problem which has plagued me now for about 2 months. The story is bizarre:
My phone was a blue i9300 which I bought factory unlocked at my local **** Smith retailer in July 2012. It worked just fine for months, then this audio problem surfaced, precisely as described here. I googled for solutions and tried various "fixes" which apparently worked for other people but had no effect for me. These escalated in invasiveness until I had flashed CWM and several ROMs with several versions of modem. None had any effect whatever. By this time, I decided it must be a hardware issue, so I spent the next week of my spare time trying to erase what I'd done so I could do a warranty claim. Finally I got TriangleAway to work and flashed it with I9300XXEMB1_I9300OXAEMB1_BTU stock UK system. To outward appearances, the phone looked original. Everything was fine, except for the original audio problem.
Meanwhile, I found a white S3 on ebay with a broken screen and I bought it for the motherboard, which I thought would fix the problem with the blue one and remove the need for warranty claim, as I still wasn't sure I'd covered my tracks well enough. The broken handset arrived and I carefully swapped the motherboard over, put the SIM in and made a call. I was horrified to find the exact same problem. Everything worked fine, except no audio on calls.
Now what was I going to do with this broken handset I just bought? It was worth nothing as it was, so I began looking on ebay for a new screen for it. Found one and ordered it. I had already decided that the fault must be on the screen half of the phone rather than the motherboard. While I was waiting for the screen to arrive, I took the original blue phone to **** Smith, explained the problem to them and asked them to send it to Samsung for me for warranty. This they happily did. I put my SIM in my Bauhn 3G tablet and have been using it as a phone (better than nothing) in the meanwhile.
The screen for the white one arrived yesterday and I sat down and carefully installed it. Put in the SIM and rang my landline. You guessed it, no audio. Exact same problem. WTF? This can't be happening. But it is. What do I do now? What are the chances of these two handsets having exactly the same fault? The white one has its original firmware XXBLH3. I haven't messed with it at all other than changing the screen. It can't be the SIM card as it works ok in the tablet. I am lost. HELP!
Edit: Just did an OTA upgrade, it is now 4.1.1 XXDLK1 Audio problem remains the same.

OK that's the most insane thing ever. I can't frigging believe it.
I've had this issue for a month and a bit and it's driving me insane. Worst of all it goes and comes back without any apparent reason. Today it started again. I've done all the exact things you did, changed modem firmware, installed cyanogenmod, everything in the phone works fine except I get no audio in calls and suddenly call drops and signal goes out of service for a few seconds.
After hearing about your case I don't know what to do. I have an insurance with the phone company that covers theft, I am thinking about it.....
well same thing happened to me , i was in a different country for one month and when i went back this started. i have no idea whats going on.
It's a hardware issue. You need to send it to Samsung for motherboard replacement.

You have to message the seller. I bought mine from amazon too and it came from Germany. I had to pay $80 and wait like 3 weeks to ship it there and get it back.

Fell Into The Orange Deal Trap - Hardware Unlock Lumia 800

Hello all,
So Orange currently have a deal on where you can get the Lumia 800 for £160 and I fell for it, thinking I could get it unlocked with ease (seems not to be the case).
It would seem none of the sites (that aren't scams) are able to provide unlock codes, Orange quote a 3 month waiting period and quite simply I feel a bit snookered. Despite Orange saying this, is it the Phone that has to be active for 3 months or just the customer?
Obviously returning the phone with some elaborate technical excuse would be one option but I honestly don't want to - I guess I could sell it and possibly be in pocket but again, I like the phone so would rather keep hold of it but with being on PAYG orange's mobile internet is somewhat of an issue where-as with 3 my current provider I pay £15 pm and get unlimited internet (that's how I like it).
With this in mind does anyone know if there is a hardware unlock for it either via cable, switchbox or simbox etc?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you have the 2.3 hardware and the Qualcomm bootloader than you can use NSS to unlock the phone. If not then currently you're out of luck. The 800 on Orange isn't actually locked to Orange, it's locked to T-Mobile and Orange, the Everything Everywhere network. If you're on T-Mobile you can use your sim in the phone (it's also easier to get it unlocked on T-Mobile through T-Mobile). Orange though are incompetent buffoons, I've been trying for over 4 months to get the phone unlocked via them lot.
The rules are, the phone must be registered on the Orange network for 90 days, so day 1 is when you put the Orange sim card in and it registers, 90 days after that they will allow you to unlock the phone (although, laughably they suggest you use a 3rd party to unlock it before that time, even though it's not possible with EE network) but it takes 30 days to get the code. I did that and after 30 days, no code, I phoned them up and they said "it was rejected because the phone wasn't registered with your name and address" even though it was, they put in the order again and said 7 days, 7 days later, no code. Phoned them up again and got hung up on TWICE before finally the guy put the order in again and said 2-3 days, I'm still waiting, should be today or tomorrow but I'm not hopeful that Orange will actually do their stuff. I shoulda gone through T-Mobile.
Thanks dgwebb - seems it might be worth going and finding a t-mobile micro sim then.
JUst rang around a few of the mobile shops and they have said they can't do anything with it at the moment. The hardware is on 2.4 - the one on display was 2.3 (I had my fingers crossed): should have asked for the display model lol!
My only concern is that I do go through a fair bit of internet usage!

So I'm going to check out a used G2 tomorrow.

Found a "broken" G2 in the ads today, I might go check it out tomorrow. The seller is selling it for a very low price (somewhere around 150 USD) because the phone can't register to a network. Using my previous knowledge of other Android phones and the knowledge I acquired during my time with my own G2, I've deduced the following (ordered from least likely to most likely):
- the phone was dropped and the radio cable got detached (fairly easy fix, take the phone apart and reattach everything, the physical state of the phone can't be deduced from a single photo that's put online)
- the SIM tray is faulty because at the photo I got, a no SIM icon is visible (though that could've been taken without a SIM in the phone)
- something or someone messed up the EFS partition (I plan on checking whether the phone's bootloader root checker has been tripped, if the IMEI is okay, if it has a custom recovery, etc). The phone seems to have a stock ROM which I suspect someone flashed, or tried to factory reset the phone (which raised a suspicion described below).
But the most likely situation is that the phone was stolen. Why? Well:
- if the phone can't register to a network, its IMEI may be blacklisted
- the phone is being sold without any equipment, not even its box. The guy says it was sold to him like that, which makes me even more suspicious. I have some friends working in certain operators here, I'll snoop around once I get a hold of the phone's IMEI. If I can't get a straight story out of him, I'll try some intimidation or to knock down the price to oblivion, being that the phone might be stolen, and use it for parts, if my ways of finding its owner turn up dry.
Do you guys have any additional tips on what to check? I plan on putting my own SIM card in and trying to run some diagnostics from the hidden menus to see what's what.

Seems like you got it all covered! Best of luck.
Hello, even if you have a friend inside, It would do you well to use one of those online IMEI Blacklist checkers, if the phone is from a US carrier and it happens to be stolen/blacklisted theres a good chance that it will appear.
Anywho, so how will you do it? Will the seller lend you the phone for a couple of hours for you to check all these things? Or Will you be gambling for it?
Best of luck, the G2 is freaking awesome! I'm having a blast!
Definitely worth it. I bought a sprint lg g2 that was "bricked" in TWRP after they tried to OTA. Lmao got it for $40! Unlocked and am using now
Bought one recently (advertised as faulty antenna) but it had a messed up EFS. IMEI was null. Checked IMEI and it was fine. Restored IMEI and phone is flying fine.. Good luck on purchase.

Wi-Fi automatically turns off

Has anyone else experienced issues with wifi turning itself off? It seems to do so at random times throughout the day, sometimes even 30 seconds after turning it on, while my daughter it's watching YouTube, or while I'm surfing the internet.
I have been using automagic to turn it back on, but it's annoying when I'm on the internet and a page fails to load since the wifi suddenly disconnected itself.
I have disabled all the T-Mobile settings under diagnostics, and enable wifi while the screen is off, but it didn't fix the issue. I have factory reset the device, and even on setup it disabled itself 3 times while trying to setup. I don't use data, so I stick with wifi for receiving emails, which is why I want it always on.
Anyone else? If it's normal for this phone, I'll just suck it up and deal with it, otherwise I'll send it off to LG, but wanted to check with folks here, first.
I ended up contacting LG and shipped the phone to them this afternoon.
me too
Mine does this too and is also a T Mobile variant. Was hoping someone here would have a solution. I bought mine used, so no point in trying to send it back to LG though. Did you by chance download the MM update? Wondering if there's something T mobileish that doesn't play well, but I doubt it.
Just a thought..make sure there aren't any of the options turned on under "Smart Settings" in the settings menu. Some of the options turn off/on Wifi when you are in a specific location.

I did take the MM update. Unfortunately I've sent the phone in to LG two times for this issue, and they still haven't fixed it. Just got the phone back today, and sure enough, the wifi turns off after a few minutes. It even turns itself off a few times when going through the activation process. I'm pretty sure this is the last time I will by an LG phone.
I just called LG to request another shipping label. He asked the obligatory, "have you pulled the battery and put it back in, factory reset the device, or anything else that has nothing to do with your issue?". I just don't understand why they have no quality control. The first time they replaced the camera and said it fixed the wifi issues. The second time they did replace the bluetooth and wifi module, but again, they didn't even check to see if it was resolved.
I asked the LG rep how to get the issue resolved, and he said I'll have to ship it back to them. What good it will do to ship it out a third time, I don't know. This is getting really irritating.

Thanks for the idea, but nothing turned on there.
Turns out that if I take my sim card out (Lycamobile, a MVNO running on T-Mobile's network), I don't have trouble with the wifi turning off, at least not yet after 6 hours. I'll try putting my sim card back in and see if the issue comes back, then try an unactivated T-Mobile sim card.
I'm guessing LG could never repro the issue.
Didn't matter which sim card I used, the wifi would turn itself off. Since it didn't seem to happen when no sim card was present, it makes me wonder if it was software related. I couldn't find anything, and nuked all the permissions to the T-Mobile apps, but it was still broken.
Off to LG for the third time. The normal LG customer service says they only do ground shipping for repairs, but the supervisor was able to get me an overnight label when I asked for faster shipping, so that helps. I also asked for a new (or refurbished) phone, but he said that was up to the repair technician.
Just got the phone back today. LG can't fix the device, yet they refuse to replace it. I've sent it in 3 times, and the issue is still not resolved. Turn on wifi, find and start to download an app, and it says no connection. Look, and the wifi is back off. Or YouTube. Or browsing the internet. Or doing nothing at all. Just turns itself off.
I get the phone back for a day, and immediately send it back in. Supervisors are useless - the only thing they can do is get you overnight shipping instead of ground. But the repair facility won't acknowledge it for two days after it arrives when it's overnight shipping.
Sick and tired of LG. LG says there is nothing they can do if the repair facility deems that it's fixable. They won't send a new or refurbished phone. The only course of action I have, per two supervisors, is to send it back in, and there is no other way. And the repair facility doesn't test to make sure their fix actually addresses the problem. No quality checks whatsoever. What a worthless company.
Sent back a fourth time, and just received it back after waiting another two weeks. Each technician just replaces the wifi/Bluetooth module but doesn't bother checking to see if the issue is fixed, which it's not. What's worse, is this time it looks like the phone has been dropped. I sent an almost brand-new phone to them (no scratches or blemishes), and now the metal bezel on one of the sides is all scratched up.
Waiting for a call back from yet another supervisor. My BBB complaint just has a response saying, we see that it was shipped back to you. They didn't even read the claim. Typical LG. I guess it's from corporate all the way down the chain. But if your superiors don't care, why would the underlings?
No more LG phones for me after this. These games are ridiculous, and it keeps getting worse (now my phone is all scratched up).
Received the phone back after the 5th "repair". Same issue with the WiFi, and the scratches on the bezel weren't addressed. BBB case was closed automatically after a week, despite them saying I had 10 days to respond.
I had thought about rooting and uninstalling the T-Mobile bloat before sending it to them for the third time, but figured I'd give LG another chance. I should have just done it, as removing all T-Mobile apps fixed the issue. Merely nuking the permissions from the apps had not previously done the trick.
Now I just have a scratched up phone, which I think I'll just live with rather than risk LG messing up something else, not to mention that rooting voids the warranty.
