[Q] Turn Off 3g but leave lte on - Sprint LG G3

I have rooted my phone and was wondering if anyone knows a way to turn off 3g but leave lte on.The reason for this is i live in a weak lte signal area but get the connection consistently but it constantly drops to 3g and then never switches back without me putting the phone into airplane mode and then it will reconnect.

Modify the build.prop as in this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=54349766
That's the only way I know of, and I haven't tried it to know for sure.

If you do this, would you still be able to receive text messages or MMS? Unless I'm wrong (and I could be) doesn't SMS/MMS go through the 3g network?

I honestly don't know. LTE is weak where I am so I can't test it out.
Just back up your original build.prop before, if you decide to try it.

I would not recommend changing these values. I only updated the ro.telephony.default_network and my phone started acting strangely. I tried values 0 through 12. I had an issue where the phone would not allow me to keep wifi off and it wouldn't connect to 3G or LTE. In order to resolve this I had to go back to 10 and reboot twice. It was not a Sprint Connections Optimizer issue from what I could tell... at least the menu option wasn't showing as checked.
If you do decide to change these values it seems that you may need to reboot twice for the new value to be picked up and sometimes you won't be able to resolve the issue without going into the settings and putting it back to CDMA/LTE.
None of the values appeared to force the phone to stay on LTE. Any one of the ones where data worked would go back to 3G a minute or so after connecting to 4G in a weak 4G area.
I used the build prop editor on the play store and then verified that the values were actually updated in root explorer.
UPDATE:
I also tried updating the ro.build.target_operator to OPEN and while I did get the brightness slider and some different icons wifi calling went away and lost the ability to select networks (Global, CDMA, LTE/CDMA, etc.) in the settings menu.

I ran into the same situation as you so maybe there isnt a way yet.

I found a way to force 4G LTE only and easily control other network modes. The xposed module Xorware 2g/3g/4g switcher and Xorware all in one widget work perfectly. See screenshots for how mine is configured. Note you will need to install both xposed modules from Xorware.

Set that up and it isn't working. Actually kills all mobile data connections until I go into settings and choose my "Network Mode" again. When I do go to the "network mode" screen, none of the bubbles are checked. Is this broken or am I?
-Roger

It works fine for me. One thing i noticed.... In 4g mode it connects to gsm and the spinning icon is different. It seems to be a DIFFERENT 4g network than the standard sprint Lte. Weird. I can see this by looking at the lte discovery app. Maybe this causes 4g roaming on another network? 3g settings work fine though... I get lte as i normally would and it falls back to 3g when it normally would.
Also you have to wait for a minute for everything to reconnect. Does the 3g setting work ok for u?
While I am getting 4G when forcing it it does seem that I am connected to a GSM (read, not a Sprint) tower. See screenshots for proof. It is a different tower than my normal towers.

Do you have to pay for this app?? Because it surely looks like I have to pay to use those features.

Also... When I tap Change Log, nothing happens.

Just download the xorware all in one widget. That will let you use it for free.

Anyone else test this app??
"I don't suggest it though."

I found the solution!!!!
The proper module is available in the play store. It is Intelli3G by Voidv Apps. It is free and in english. It does the GSM in a circle thing like the other guy said.
URL : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.voidvapps.intelli3g&hl=en
It has not dropped to 3G after the install. I haven't seen what happens in a 3G only part of town, but I will update you later.
UPDATE: Seems to just drop signal until you get back to a covered spot.
UPDATE2: I couldn't make calls :|

I have also switched to using intelli3G. It is a nicer design and only does what I need it to. As mentioned you will lose connectivity if you can't get a 4G signal. So doing this is really only good for forcing a 4G connection when you have a weak one. I really only care to use this if I'm traveling and need to tether since most Hotel wifi isn't fast enough for streaming Netflix. For some reason it seems a lot of the hotels I stay in are right on the border of a 4G connection... probably due to the lower penetration of the Sprint LTE band.

HTC Titan Wifi/3G and Live services

I've spend over a month trying to battle the issues with not able to use Live services and Marketplace over the 3G connection.
I've been back and forth with plenty of hard resets adviced by Zune support - no change.
I've been back and forth with plenty of hard resets adviced by WinPhone support - no change.
I've even swapped SIM cards - no help.
Issue:
You can't download apps/music or stream music using 3G. On wifi it works fine.
Reason:
HTC WiFi bug goes deeper than we think. It's not just being or not being able to run 3G and WiFi together or low WiFi signal. But if you at times try and download or ugrade using WiFi and use 2G mode at the same time - you will get this. As soon as you switch from 2g to 3g and switch off wifi - nothing will download off your marketplace.
Solution:
I've reproduced it many many times. However, it will only happen if your SIM doesn't have APN settings on it i.e. non-contract phones using certain pay as you go networks i.e. Tesco, Lyca, Giffgaff, Talktalk
When you go 2g/3g swapping and use wifi - the phone forgets your APN settings. Once you switch to 3g, go to APN settings, edit your password by writing your password again and save it. Restart phone. Now your 3g will work again. You have to do this every time you use combo of wifi/2g or sometimes even when using wifi and then switching to 3g.
Moan:
I've contacted HTC, they don't care, they think it doesn't exist. They want my phone to be sent for repairs. I am not doing it as I have only one phone. I know HTC won't even acknowledge the earlier Wifi bug. But luckily we have workarouns.
Have you tried running the HTC connection setup to see if that resolves the situation in some way?

Yes I did that too. But HTC connection setup settings are forgotten as soon as you swap away from 3g. So everytime I come back to 3g, I have to re-fresh my APNs manually and restart! - such a pain.
thanks....

ics 3g vs H

Well I did the update stuck my sim card in the device and it works well.phone calls and textswork good. In the begining itsaid 3G on the signal bar. Today I took the tablet outside my home and after an hour the 3G turned into a H. While in the H mode I can't acess the web browser but in 3G it worked well. The other issue I have is in the 3G mode netflix doesn't seem to connect. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
After doing some searching I have read that the springboard cannot do talk/text AND web bur only talk/text which really sux. So has anyone found out a way to make it possible to use all three features?

3G means base UTMS. H means HS*PA, 3,5G, standard that improves performance.
Android always switching to HS*PA, when some app requires internet connection and it's supported by network. When no apps seeking for connection Android reverts to base UMTS to improve network availability and to safe battery.
You need to check network settings. Or better contact your operator for that. Everything should work unless your operator have a problem with HS*PA.
But something tells me you are not honest with us. It didn't work for you in 3G. But you just installed Android 4 and forgot to mention that you didn't try yet mobile data on Android 4. You think that it was working in 3G because Android 3 based firmwares missed H icon, but in fact every time you connected by mobile network, device was switching into HS*PA mode without letting you know.
So there 3 points to you:
1. Check if APN is set correctly;
2. Check if you installed correct ROM that support bands of your operator (there is a lot of different versions - 301u, 301w, 302u, 303u etc);
3. Make sure HS*PA is not broken on operator side.

2. This is the rom I installed " [ROM][ICS] [UNOFFICIAL] Root-ready Huawei MediaPad/SpringBoard ICS International" doyou know of one that works with S7-303u
3. I doubt my carriers HS*PA (T-Mobile) is broken.
And why would I lie in a forum? After I installed the rom I put my cell phones sim card in the device and it was showing 3G signal. I opened the brower and it went to my home page (Google.com) I checked e-mail... after I noticed the signal turned to H icould no longer access the web in either 3G or H. Whenever I opened the browser it just goes straight to T-Mobile login and it wasn't doing it before.
Can't say anything about it further of what i've said. Don't know T-Mobile settings and don't know if 301u version would fully work on 303u. That thread says HSPA+ (or as they call it 4G) wouldn't work with 301u firmware. But theoretically HSDPA, HSUPA and HSPA should work, unless T-Mobile have different set of bands.
You better ask in that thread. May be there is someone with T-Mobile experience.

At last - did you try to reboot? Mediapad's radio hangs sometimes. It's pretty common for Android.

Wifi Tether for Root Users - slow speeds, throttled?

Anyone else here installed Wifi Tether for Root Users? play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether
I have an unlimited data plan and I want to make the best use of my rooted handset. I've set it up and can get online, but I'm only getting .7/3 mbps while with the speedtest.net app I easily get 10/10+
With the default install in adhoc mode it wasn't working, so I changed the default profile to Generic ICS and the Setup-Method to Auto (which I think defaults to Netd(master)) I have wifi-driver reload enabled and I have tried with and without the "Routing fix"
Anyone have any experience with wifi tether, and maybe can suggest a fix/config that will work?

I'm curious: what happens if you disable TetheringGuard.apk (using pm or by deleting it)? Does that make the standard tethering feature in Wifi settings work?
(I have a shared data plan with built-in tethering, so I can't try it.)

I renamed the apk and the obex file, adding a .bak extension.
Wifi Tether speeds are unchanged.
Mobile Hotspot won't turn on (I usually get a message that says it's not on my account).
Not sure what to try next...

Thanks nitsuj17. I tried EasyTether and my speeds do seem to be more normal. Although that doesn't really give me a whole lot of conclusive evidence that I'm not being throttled. I can think of two possible causes right now:
1. Wifi Tether doesn't work correctly for my phone (which is weird because my uploads rates are 10x that of downloads)
2. Either Verizon or some piece of software on my phone is detecting that I am tethering over wifi and throttling me. I'm not sure what the best way to debug this is... maybe a custom ROM will do something?

Wifi Hotspot is free IF you switch to the "Share Everything" plan. You're basically buying blocks of data at that point, so they don't really care how you use it. Primarily because you will most likely go over and pay overages.
Some of us have been grandfathered into Unlimited data plans. For us, wifi tether working as well as USB tethering would be amazing.

yea for out plan it actually saved us $70 a month!
I had unlimited but I don't need it, I don't tether, and we have 4 mines total and we were using under 2GB total on the entire plan, so we have 4 lines with 8GB for the month, we will NEVER come close to that, unless im tethering the entire month for an unknown reason.
so ur saying since, we are in a share everything plan now i actually can tether for free??
I tried it and it wanted to charge me $20

i still have tetheringuard in place, didnt affect anything for me
I get capped at 100kbps.
any updates to this?
i finally got my laptop to connect tonight using nitsu's power #12 (can't get a kindle fire to connect). i've got a full 4g signal but am getting 100 kbps as well...
upload is around 6 Mbps right now!
fyi... found a post that mentioned using TB to freeze the tethering guard app...
that seems to have made a noticeable difference. i'll have to do some testing over time but this is by far the best tethering speed i've been able to get.
Was there ever a fix?
i use to use FoxFi on my S3, which gave great speeds, but FoxFi has its own issues on the LG G3. Wifi Tether Router Works, but i get a fraction of the speed that my phone gets. aka, speedtest from phone gets 80mb down, but when i turn on the hotspot then run speedtest from my ipad/computer it only gets 2-4mb down.

My Settings:
Leave all settings Default except the following:
Device Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Enable WiFi-Encryption
Use a 13 character Passphrase (IMPORTANT!)
WiFi-driver Reload
MSS Clamping
Routing Fix
Bingo! It works!
It would not work without using a 13 character password. I never noticed the error message about this.
I used a simple pa55word12345 as a test.
Hope this helps some of you.
I've been using TrevEMod wifi for a while now and it works
TrevEMod
I'm on meanbean and works fine non encrypted

Mine works as well. I have been using MeanBean and Viper4g and never had an issue. I did check routingfix and mss clamping though.
TrevEMod wifi Tether works for for me on the latest MeanBean, without having to set a password. Just select MSS Clamping, Wifi Driver Reload, and Routing Fix and I'm all set

Can you guys get it to work with LTE? I've only gotten it to work once testing by speedtest.net. The other times I'm getting 3g speeds even though my phone has 4g. I tested the phone speed and received 4g speeds while my tethered laptop received 3g speeds.

Are you using the native hotspot? I certainly have gotten it to tether on 4G.
And to the OP, I've gotten it to work simply by changing the Device Profile to wlan0. It starts and stops properly for me. No WiFi clamping or Routing fix selected, with an 8 char passphrase.

I tried it with both. I was only successful once using WiFi Tether. I will test more at a later time.

Similar situation on this end... more or less resolved. Phone tends to default to 3G, even in the presence of good LTE signal.
1: Open settings, Mobile Data, toggle to CDMA only, wait for 3G icon to disappear on status bar, toggle back to CDMA/LTE,
2: With Mobile Data on and phone stable, reboot. Phone connects to 4G LTE after boot cycle.
These work for me only when the phone is in its place on the windowsill, seemingly glued to 3G. Note: I live in Baltimore with generally good LTE coverage. I would like to be able to change connection priorities in EPST so that the phone's prefered data connection is to LTE, but I haven't found and tricks to do that.

sorry my english is not good
cant get it to download from play store ...how do i get it to download
I had a similar problem as I described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147070
It would work perfectly after a reboot, but only once. So, every time I needed it, which wasn't that often, I would reboot the phone.
I'm not using sense anymore so I can use the built-in tether app if I need to.
Sorry, I wish I had a solution for you. Good luck!

I think that is only for Android 4.2.2.
I have a sense Rom, with s-off, couldn't get stock to work. Flashed a new flash Rom. Tried tons of ways with several versions of WiFi tether. Finally found a WiFi tether treve mod used the first generic ICS/JB and auto set-up on the method type... Boom I finally have it working. Using 4G LTE no problems..
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
Thanks man, I used those settings and it finally worked. Maybe it wouldn't work before because of the Setup method they kept telling me to use. But I left it default like you said and it worked.
It worked for me every time i used it. Only problem I have is that it makes my laptop go blue screen every time i connect it to my phone and my phone only. I have to use Klink just to tether to my laptop. It works on every other phone with my laptop. My laptop worked on my Evo 3D wifi tether too.

[Q] 4g and wifi icon after 4.4

I now have a 4g and wifi icon present on the notification bar when connected to wifi, not just a wifi icon, any one else with this problem?
Not a "problem", just a change they made. Even with mobile data off you will still have the icon letting you know there is data coverage available. Don't know why they changed it, but thats what they do lol

Change, for the sake of change. I can almost hear the software engineers: "Well, there's really nothing wrong with this, but if we change it, people will think it's a "NEW AND IMPROVED" feature!
I have 2 S4. On one the 4g stays grayed when WiFi is running. My other S4 has the 4g on while WiFi is on. In each case, neither shows any 4g activity (arrows moving) with WiFi on. This is rather odd since both are setup the same with regards to WiFi and mobile data.
Update: by turning off Caller Name ID app, I have both of my S4 acting in the same way (4g consistently grayed out when WiFi on). Why the app affects the 4g icon is beyond me.
