I have a pny duo link 64gb that is usb 3.0 but it uses microUSB and i have an adapter that i know passes data that is microUSB to Type C but for some reason the lg doesn't read it at all, is usb otg working properly on the device? Is there a setting i have to enable or a file manager i have to use?

Do USB 3.0 flash drives work with USB 3.0 OTG adapter?

I currently use a USB 2.0 flash drive with a USB 2.0 OTG adapter.
The transfer speeds can be a little slow.
I see there are USB 3.0 OTG adapters on eBay such as this one: http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/311139411713
If I hook a USB 3.0 flash drive to this adapter, will I be able to transfer files at USB 3.0 speeds?

From my testing 3.0 speeds were only seen from pc accessing phones internal storage. Read write of external sd didn't change and usb host mode I am 99.9% sure only supports 2.0.
Btw, I use the 3.0 otg connector just because it fits more snug, totally prefer it over 2.0 micro cable even though the pins go unused.

USB OTG not working

Hello there,
unfortunately, I couldn't get USB OTG working, even though it should support it according to various spec pages.
My setup is following: LG G5 <-> USB Type C to Micro USB adapter <-> Micro USB-OTG adapter (2.0) <-> USB 2.0 thumb drive (see attached picture)
The light of the drive is not lighting up. So maybe the G5 isn't powering the device?
I've tried three different USB-OTG adapters without success. All three are working on a G4 as well as on a Nexus 7 (2012) flawlessly.
The USB Type C to Micro USB adapters should work as well. Charging (normal and QuickCharge) is working perfectly fine, even ADB does as it should so the data pins should be connected. However, both adapters lack D+ and D- pins for USB 2.0 on one side. This should not be a problem, though. (see attached picture)
Did somebody succeed in using OTG in a similar setup?
The usb c to micro adapter is your problem
Hey budd
this one works
rarely found

Is it because the USB controller needs to be configured to be in OTG-mode by using another resistor value?

Do you know whether they comply with the USB 3.1 specifications?
I have the same issue so i used the usb type c to micro adapter on an usb cable and it connected to my computer just fine and i could transfer data is it still the the adapter?
You do know they have started releasing type c OTG cables and adapters without the need of converting from micro usb to type c, right?
See the pictures below. These are just some of the types you can get, soon enough there will be more types of otg and more adapters for type c usb
If not then see the links provided
According to their titles, it says that they comply with 3.1 specs..

Thank you for your reply .
I am aware of those adapters, I just hoped I would be able to use my OTG adapters I already had at home. I'll try to buy one later that year and will report back which one's working…
Hello, sorry for my english, i'm from germany! But i have found the problem, why you can't connect to the usb storage! If I disconnect my sd card in the settings and connect my otg device, i can find the usb stick! My lg g5 can only connect one device in time!
Not the adapter ...
I was on lineage OS until end of May and did not get the OTG working with any adapter what so ever.
OTG worked with the Stock Kernel and now I am running Resurrection Remix' version of April 8th 2017. Since Resurrection Remix is based on lineageos - as expected - the OTG got broken in later Resurrection Remix releases.
So something weird happened in the firmware between April 8th and now.
This one works perfectly.

Any news on LG G5 and broken OTG?
i have the same issue, i can connect my G5 with Adapters to my PC... there Data Transfer is working
But no usbstick or usb led or usb mouse is running with choetech or anker usb adapters.
i also tried this one

it seems that the usb devices are getting no power from the usb port

Tried many adapters that claim to be h850-OTG-comaptible (have now 8 of those). It can't just be the adapter, because earlier version of Lineage OS and RR worked and still work.
But I am glad that you have found a solution for yourself

I've already poked our G5 maintainer about it and he'll investigate the issue when he gets back from vacation in a bit over 2 weeks. It has to be something that LOS changed upstream and he'll try to work it out when he gets back
The same issue here. When I first time connected OTG adapter G5 showed notification about charging and when I clicked that it could be changed to multimedia device or something similar. It connected the USB key successfully but disconnected few seconds later. Never ever got this notification again when connected any other USB keys. Nowhere in the settings can be found any USB options.. Any idea how to fix this?
I have the same issue.
I have a number of usb c otg adapters and devices. Like cameras (endoscope). Drone telemetry receiver. Programmable LED spinner that uses an android app.
All of these things worked in the past. Connecting to my LG G5 resulted in a popup where I would choose which app to run.
Now when I plug anything into the usb port using an otg configuration, nothing pops up. Nothing happens.
Phone still charging ok via usb.
Hello all
I finally gave up on OTG, after having bought 8 so-called LG G5 compatible OTG adapters for half a fortune
BUT for everybody who is in the same big despare as I was, I - by chance - finally found a great solution for myself.
"SanDisk Connect Wireless Stick" with integrated WiFi (mine has 32 GB), provides copying, streaming and whatsoever to your phone - simple and simply genius.
see also:
https://www.sandisk.co.uk/home/mobile-device-storage/connect-wireless-stick
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sandisk.connect
Plug it into the PC and use it like a normal USB stick and connect to Phone via WiFi and optionally share with other mobile devices.
For home internet you can even use the stick and WiFi at the same time. Whoever invented this gimmik may have been aware of all our issues.
Just works like a charm. Unbelievable!
Instead of waiting "til kingdom come", stop posting, complaining, waiting - at least I will stop, because obviously nothing's going on in this direction.
A little Addition: when you have IP-config (or similar) installed on your LG G5 and you open IP-config
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paksoftwares.ipconfig&hl=en
then connect the WiFi of the PC to the SanDisk Stick and type the gateway-address shown in IP-config into the URL-line of your browser
You can then transfer data between phone and PC directly via the SanDisk Connect WiFi stick ... how cool is that?
Mine works fine. Had issues with certain kernels though...
Bump
Still same Problem in RR.
The Adapter works in TWRP version 3.1.0.0 but in the newer versions also not.
I don't even get a pupup and devices Art n't powered...
Is the typhon kernel capable oft handling otg?
my experience
I am using the stock Android OS 8 on an LG G5 from Fido in Canada, specifically the “LGE LG-H831” variant according to the Google Play Store. I have a microUSB plug↔full-size USB Type A socket USB OTG adapter from StarTech that works with my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 but I needed a USB Type C plug↔full-size USB Type A socket USB OTG adapter now that I have switched from the Galaxy Note 3 to the LG G5. I bought five of this model of adapter (in red colour) on eBay for only around 5 CAD total including shipping from Asia to Metro Vancouver, Canada, which took between 20 and 30 days but buying this type of product on eBay from Asia cost way less than buying it locally:
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/283235483653
Sorry, I got ahead of myself in writing my story because I am tired and I did this USB OTG stuff at least a week or two ago by now. I have two models of microUSB socket↔USB Type C plug adapters, one black one from StarTech and one white unbranded one that may have been included with the LG G5 but I do not know for certain because my father gave me this LG G5; I am not the original recipient/user of this LG G5. I could not get any of the USB devices I tried working with the LG G5 with these two types of adapters connected together. I tried with a USB SSD, a USB keyboard with a microUSB connector (so actually using only one adapter in this case), a USB keyboard with a normal full-size USB Type A plug, and a USB↔Ethernet adapter. That is why I searched the Internet and found this topic. Then the adapters I linked above arrived. With the adapter I linked above, all of the USB devices that did not work (other than the keyboard with the microUSB connector) now seem to work with the LG G5. I was not able to network the LG G5 via Ethernet in the time I had available to spend on that project but I think this was only a software problem because the hardware seemed to be working. When I say the USB devices did not work with the LG G5 with the old adapters, I mean nothing seemed to happen when I connected the USB devices to the LG G5 using the old adapters. With the new adapter, the USB devices seem to work when connected to the LG G5 without any special action. I upgraded the stock OS on the LG G5 from Android OS 7 to Android OS 8 before I began seriously using the LG G5 because I did not want to lose the time customising the software if the in-place upgrade of the OS failed. Almost all of my experience with the LG G5 is with the stock Android OS 8, not Android OS 7 nor earlier versions. I have not and will not try to replace the stock OS on the LG G5 because I had a bad experience with replacing the OS on the Galaxy Note 3 even after I reverted to the stock OS. My LG G5 seems to still be unrooted, which seems to not matter in practice for my use case so far.
I purchased a USB 3.1 docking station model T3527-VIII+ from ineo on Amazon. USB 3 to type C adapter comes with it. I use the adapter with my LG G5 RS988 without a problem. Devices are: regular USB drives, USB keyboards and USB mice.

A5 ’17 USB OTG: a little research

One of the things I’m really amazed by with the modern PDAs is the USB OTG. So just as I found out that my Galaxy has it, I got myself an adapter (for less than $3) and tested it with several devices. Here’re my results:
USB flash drives: every single one I tried worked perfectly except a 1 GB drive of unknown vendor, which wasn't even recognized by the Galaxy, works okay with PCs thought.
External HDDs: the Toshiba 500 GB USB 3.0 drive wasn't recognized and didn't show any signs of life. Surprisingly, a 320 GB SATA WD Blue in a USB bay was detected and spinned up, but the Galaxy didn't recognize the file system and asked if I want to format it. I didn't, since the disk had some data I needed, but there's definitely a potential.
Input devices: all the mice and keyboards I tried worked as they should, both wired and wireless, which was expected. Which wasn't, is that DualShock3 controller from my PS3 was immediately recognized too without any additional drivers or software, it even let me control the menus. Sadly, that wasn't the case with my Logitech Freedom 2.4 wireless joystick. I guess the power wasn't enough.
Output devices: Sennheiser wired USB headset (basically, the USB sound adapter with the headset attached) worked as it should. HP LaserJet P1102 printer didn't work even with USB printing service installed.
Overally, I got much more then I dreamed of, especially since I heard that the OTG is very poor on a modern devices. DualShock3 success is especially cool.
This is quite weird as I have tried the original Samsung Micro USB OTG adapter, with the little white USB-C adapter and it did not work. This is on A3 2017.
There were rumors that USB OTG was disabled. Which adapter do you have?

The rumors aren't true. The thing is, Type-C uses a different pinout for OTG, so it shouldn't be a combo of Type-C to Micro and Micro to Type-A OTG, it should be a special Type-C to Type-A OTG adapter. The adapter that comes with the device is good for charging only, or so I heard. I’ll photo my adapter, but I got it for almost nothing in a local computers store.

Very interesting. A different pinout for OTG. Yeah I thought it was the combo that shoud have worked.
The little adapter comes with the device is said to be charge and sync. Because when connected to my PC it works. for data transfer.

Here’s the one I got. The site is in Russian, but the pictures are self-explanatory.
I have an OTG now from Aliexpress. It works for my A3 2017. 90 degree angle connector.
Now onto an USB-C to HDMI. The official Samsung EE-HG950 does not work.

So if i understand correctly the little "micro usb connector" that comes with the A5 2017 won't work for anything other than charging? I tried using it with a regular otg cable and it doesn't detect any flash drive, not even a ps3 controller, i don't even get the notification that a usb is plugged in.
But whats weird is if i use a male to male usb cable and connect to to a pc it works just fine. Any idea whats causing this?
Please help. I have the same problem. I have newly bought a5 2017. I already have otg usb drive sandisk. The adapter type c included in the box didn't work fine. Except only for charging when connected to usb 2.0.
My usb otg drive will become useless if it doesn't read by my device. What should i do? Or how to activate maybe my otg support? Tnx in advance.

The adapter from the box is just for charging and data transfer to compuer. If you want to use your flasdisk you can buy a new usb otg for type c slot.

OTG on Galaxy Tab S3 not working?

I have a USB C adapter connected to a Samsung OTG cable, but the tab S3 is not picking it up. The OTG cable works well on my Note 5. Is there a solution to it? Thanks
What are you trying to connect to your Tab S3? A hard drive?
I just tried a USB C flash drive on my Tab S3 and it works properly. OTG capability should be there.

I am using the Xiaomi USB Type-C to Micro USB adapter with a Samsung OTG cable. I use that Samsung OTG cable on my Note 5 to connect a thumb drive or a card reader and it works fine. Does that mean it is the USB Type-C to Micro USB adapter itself that must be OTG for it to work?
The Xiaomi USB Type C to Micro could be the culprit. Maybe it is used for charging only?
Yes, you are correct, it is for charging and connection to a PC and having an OTG cable on top does not seem to work. I have ordered a proper USB C OTG adapter online, it should arrive next week and I hope it works. Thanks for your response. Cheers.
