Subject: Warning - airline power
From: Stephen K

All,
I bought a nice new XDA in Hong Kong airport. Charged it up in
the lounge for 20mins and killed time waiting for my flight to
London playing with my new toy.
After boarding the juice started running out well before my
gadgetlust could achieve closure.
As withdrawal symptoms kicked in I considered my options: 1)
risk using the onboard (Britsh Airways) laptop charging kits on
my XDA; 2) go mad
Needless to say I went for option 1....
Zzzztttzzt
...awakening 3 weeks later in an asylum outside London - the
proud owner of a very dead XDA.
My XDA still works (could get it to boot for a few seconds on
remaining juice) however it refuses to charge. (No light from
the charging diode).
If any hardware wizards out there know which bit I am most
likely to have fried and if there is a repair/bypass solution my
therapist and I would be most grateful.
(In moments of madness I have been eyeing the little connector
at the back of the XDA {I assume its for connecting the extended
battery - could that be rigged as an alternative charging
route??})
Help me harwaregurunobi... you're my only hope.

Not sure what an "onboard (Britsh Airways) laptop charging kit"
is, but if it is meant to plug into a laptop, it is usually 19
volts. Your XDA wants 5 or 6, so if that's what you did, then it
is likely you have, indeed, murdered it quite violently.
The trick, we figure, is to leave certain details out of your
story when returning it for warranty repairs. "It suddenly
stopped charging" sounds just fine to us.
Losing the toy for a little while means the neuron connections
that caused you to do this will not get any of the good
chemicals. This is good news, because they sure as hell haven't
deserved any.

Did I mention something about a flight? I must have been
hallucinating, perhaps a side effect of the chemicals my
therapist has been prescribing - now that I think about it my
xda was fine one minute, then suddenly just stopped charging.
My dysfunctional neurons have suffered enough already - I don't
think they'll be making the same mistake any time soon. I'll
give them a week more suffering and then by a stop gift gadget
to see them through until the replacement arrives.
Thankyou hardwaregurunobi... you have brought balance to the
force.

Subject: No sounds, but phone rings
From: Alex
Date: 31 Dec, 2002 11:58:27
Something strange has happened to my xda!
I am getting no sound thru the speaker, unless the phone is
ringing, when I hear the ringtone fine. If I play my ringtone
thru the settings menu, I get nothing.
I get no other sounds thru the speaker. If the headset is
connected, the sound (through the earphones) is fine.
Also in phone mode, pressing the green call button for
speakerphone mode results in nothing, no icon, nothing.
It's as though it's stuck in headset mode, but that doesn't
explain why I can hear the phone ringing. I've tried flicking
the jack in and out of the socket but that did nothing!
I have tried a soft reset to no avail, and am thinking now of a
hard reset after I've sync'd up. Thjis is such a hassle
reinstalling everything, so I'm not that keen on this course of
action.
I did try O2 support but they only suggested a few basic things
(like the volume setting!) before pronouncing it a faulty
handset. I'm not convinced as they didn't even suggest a reset
and I can't face going back to the shop for a replacement.
Any help much appreciated.
rgds and Happy New Year
Alex de Salis.

Tried the hard reset - no joy.
Looks like it's back to the shop.
Why today? Two day holiday in front of me, and probably no toy
to play with! boo hoo.

The contact of your earphone socket got a little problem.
Please try to quickly insert/remove the earphone several times,
then it should be solved.
If not, return your device to the service point.

Back to the shop it went - I now have a brand new handset that I
dropped this morning when getting into the lift at work. There
was I thinking it's all brand new, no more scratches on the
case, I'll look after this one.
I now have a bloody great ding on the bottom of the case where
the stone floor took its toll. Never mind!
Happy New Year,
Alex.
Hey guys ive done a pretty quick review of this GPS receiver.
You can find it HERE
You cna buy these things dirt cheap on ebay.
Do not BUY this GPS on EBAY from ANY SELLERS!
This product is sold by several different companies on ebay that are all the same.
NOTE: IF you win it cheaply as I did, THE COMPANY WILL NOT MAIL THE ITEM TO YOU.
This happened to me, I had a very long and nasty process with them, including false feedback from them (They said I didn't pay etc?? thank God for Paypal receipts...)
etc.
I only resolved this by contacting a senior guys there and getting hastled.
TWO WEEKS LATER, another ebayer, who won his cheaply too had the same thing happen to him and asked for my help. SURPRISED?
SO Do not win this item item for 14.99 GBP+ 12.99GBP shipping, they will try not to send it to you. OVERPAY FOR IT. Then you will get it.
Also, The tracking is sensitive (works in my jeans etc) BUT INACCURATE in a City like London, it just jumps around too much, wrong streets. CONCLUSION: not great for urban corridors.
Mine will go back to Ebay. Soon.
If only
If only I had seen this thread a little earlier. Purchased mine today for around £18.50 plus the P&P.
Yeah they are quite obviously the same company etc hence the timing of the auctions, but not sure whether I am bothered about that.
Will have to wait and see if it turns up - as I did not pay the supplement I don't expect it for around two weeks.
Any other comments on performance ? - this will be my first bluetooth GPS. (If it shows up).

HMM, after postage etc... it was around 25 quid i payed for it.
As for performance issues i havent had any complaints so far, first time i saw this unit was in Uni (Leeds) where a friend was using it on his Wizard, it was also a very built up area, indoors on the ground floor which is technically the basement but as it is on the side if a hill the room is exposed to the outside. He quickly got a fix etc....
I tested it out this weekend and it worked brilliantly! Hence why i wrote the review!?
It was due to the review that I went for it - total cost inc packaging for me was £31.
I will post as to (a) whether it shows up, and (b) what I make of it, in due course.
Have been emailed to say it is being dispatched.....
It has arrived.
The wife has put it on charge for me.
Could anyone who has one, confirm
(a) how long the first charge should be? and
(b) what lights should be on whilst charging.
It seems that she gets no lights, or all lights if she switches it on. It is currently on charge (I hope) with no lights showing.

Just leave it on charge... whilst charging you should have a red(ish) light on... which turns off when its finished charging!
Cheers,
How do you rate it?

Very Good! I bought mine last year from ebay and compared to my previous GPS unit the Holox is fantastic! very fast satellite lock, easy to use, good battery life, works well in built up areas and can be kept anywhere inside car without the worry of loosing satellites!
My only negative is you can't use it whilst its being charged!
EDIT:: False alarm, Im confused, how come for the past few days the module has had problems getting a fix, then now it gets a fix no problem.
Turning the device back on later and it gets an instant fix.
Could somebody explain how the GPS works before/after it gets a fix?!
OK, keeping in mind I have nothing to compare with.
All seems to work well, seems to take a minute before TomTom settles down and communicates well with it, but once its up seems OK. reception when not under open sky not quite as good as I expected although ok.
the advertising all boasts about tracking 32 satellites but ....
Anyway, seems to do the job for me.
What I need now is a cheap air vent mount (passive as have charger etc) to clip my M3100 into. Seen some on ebay etc but they look as if they obstruct the USB socket.
Brodit one looks good but at at least twenty quid for the mount and vent attachment.....
Any suggestions?

LOL so you werent tempted by the non-slip mat?
My indoors performance is ok upstairs but is garbage downstairs. I wasnt expecting much indoors though. I tested it on the train yesterday and it was working great, even had the speed fairly well on VisualGPSce
Actually I was. Its fine for the Holux but because of the angle I could not see the screen very well at all.....
I'm having a problem connecting it to my TyTN. I don't have the GPS settings that you're talking about in the control panel. I cannot even connect it to my notebook.

Notice in the review i say you need to unlock the applet first if you are using WM5?!?!
Download HTweakC and you can unlock it using that.
If you are running WM6 (which is not clear from your signature) it should be present in start>settings>system(tab)>external GPS.
I did see that however, I wasn't sure exactly what you were talking about. I couldn't remember the name of the app anyways. I remember downloading it not too long ago.
I just wanted to say that I used this with Google Maps for WM, and it worked like a charm. I had up to 10 sats at one point, with the average being 8. Even indoors right now I have 8. Works quite nice. I have the GPSlim 236 though, not the 231.
Now if I can just get this thing to work in XP I will be all set.
I would also like to note that I have an unlimited data plan, and even using edge the map updated itself very fast, while being locked into my position when driving. That is on the Edge network to!
Anyone tried various buad rate settings - does it have any impact upon usage?
Er Indoors already rations my messing around with the hermes time and I can't really get away with going and playing with it and the BT GPS in the car etc.

HI GUYS, AFTER READING ALL THE THREADS ALL I CAN SAY ITS ALL A BIT HIT AND MISS ! I PURCHASED MY BT GPS ON E-BAY FOR AROUND £25 INC PP IT ARRIVED IN 3 DAYS AND AFTER A LITTLE FUN AND GAMES CONNECTED IT TO MY XDA MINI WIN 5. I USE IT LONDON ALL THE TIME AND FIND IT VERY RELIABLE AND ACCURATE, A LOT OF THE PROBLEMS SEEM TO STEM FROM SLOW SD CARDS AND TOMTOM SOFTWARE WHICH NEEDS CONSIDERABLE RESOURCES. I HAVE NOW GOT A T-MOBILE HTC KAISER WITH WIN 6 AND LOTS OF MEMORY AND 400MHZ CHIP ! SHOULD BE INTERESTING !
What software do you recommend to use with this? I tend to lose my way a lot around London. Could you post a link, so I can get it at ~25-30 quid.

Newegg is dumping the dock for $110 (no longer $99). Time for TF2.
ASUS TF101 Docking Station with Keyboard and Built-in Battery for Transformer Tablet
and 2 months ago I was called crazy for suggesting that a fair price is $110... I estimated the parts from OEM less than or equal to $83(no R&D or profit). $99 is exceptional. I'll get one ASAP, not sure how long they will be in stock.
Just ordered mine. I was waiting for the price drop to pull the trigger. Thanks!

Hope you get a B70 or above. Some retailers like Fry's offer price matches for even online prices. Might have to check out if they have a B70 or up.

What's wrong with the ones below B70?
For peez in CA, randomly check amazon. I got it for 99 with no tax and free shippinh. Amazon prices changes all the time so you have to track the item. Newegg charges tax for us in CA

ASUS Transformer Battery Drain - FACTS and the REAL SOLUTION
While I happen to have avoided any issue with my ASUS Transformer Keyboard Dock (B50K) - in terms of the Battery Drain Problems a number of folks have reported in other threads...when I visited my brother this past weekend out of state, I learned he had the battery drain problem (B60K).
This prompted us to both call the U.S. ASUS Support Number at (888) 678 - 3688 together for a solution.
Here, we requested to speak to a supervisor, and indicated (respectfully to the original person answering the call), that I wanted to know additional details on the problem that only a Supervisor at the Center might know. I was immediately switched over to a Supervisor, who was not hesitent to disclose the facts.
We learned more in 15 minutes more than all the posts read in all the threads on this topic combined. There has also been plenty of misinformation, which is why we wanted to make sure and share:
1) There are B50K, B60K, and earlier Keyboard Dock units which contain a chipset that simply does not support the firmware setting in the latest keyboard dock update. It comes down to what chipset was installed in the Keyboard Dock hardware itself when it was constructed.
2) This means that no matter how you set the "MobileDock Battery Saving Mode" setting (checked or not), the keyboard dock battery will not go into "sleep mode"...period. It is not something that can be addressed/corrected with firmware.
3) Based on the results of facts #1 & #2, everyone with a Keyboard Dock will either will have a problem or will not - there is nothing in-between. It does not matter where you bought it, or what model (B50K or B60K) you have - either you unit is immune or has the problem. [Note: this is consistent with the varied reports of different models - some have the problem and some don't]
4) If you have a keyboard issue (which can be confirmed easily by checking the MobileDock Battery Saving Mode in the Settings menu - under Screen), turning off the unit to standby, and then pressing any key to try to "wake up" the unit), and any keyboard touch starts up the connected tablet...you have a defective Keyboard Dock unit. If it stays off - congrats - your battery drain issues should be non-existent - assuming that you are running the latest keyboard firmware from last month or else upgraded recently to Android v3.2. Both updates contained the firmware corrections to assure proper battery operations with the proper chipset in the Dock.
5) If you determine that you have a defective unit based on Fact #4, the good news is there is good news. ASUS klnows about the problem and will repair the units under warranty. This is a relatively painless process of calling the Support number, telling them you have the keyboard drain problem, and following the RMA return process (they e-mail instructions to you - not complicated at all).
6) The "repair" itself is actually not even a repair - its a 15-minute chip replacement and subsequent test process, and then they ship it back to do at their cost. The repair itself is also a warranty (free) service. Make sure when you ship it that it is well protected from damage. It does not need to be shipped with the original box or packing contents.
7) The turnaround time on the chip replacement repair is estimated at 10-14 days - counted from the date they receive your unit. You can ship it any safe way you wish...we chose to speed up the process a bit with FedEx ground (2 day service). FedEx Ground cost him $9.50...and they will get it the day after tomorrow - that is when the "clock starts" for his RMA service. The Supervisor indicated they have turned them around in as little as a week, but do not want to set "unrealistic expectations". As stated earlier, the Supervisor was very open, informative, and helpful in this process.
The fact that this call experience was prompt and virtually pain-free (other than the inconvenience of not having the unit for a short time). The ASUS Support experience we received was very, very good.
For anyone wanting to resolve their battery drain problem, I recommend they proceed to call and follow the RMA return process through ASUS. This assures the correction.
My dock is a B60 and I haven't had a single problem with it. I've done the test and it passes. Only time I had a battery drain issue was because of a "stay awake" setting.

Me too. My B6O has been great, way better than my B5O.
But, people on this forum reported they have B6O docks which still have problems. These are some reliable folks. It is covered in another thread, but it depends on factory the B6O dock was manufactured in...

Thanks! I just checked Newegg and updated the price shown here to $110.
Totally Unnaceptable
I'm canceling my order right now, yesterday I bought mine online for $99 plus S&H + tax. This is absolutely ridiculous to just play Russian roulette with an overpriced product!. I love my tf101, but there is no way I'm spending money just to guess with, 10-14 days of processing time, I rather pass.
Asus quality control is really disappointing.
NewEgg has now discontinued both the TF101-A1/B1 tablets, & the TF101 keyboard dock. :-( They are also currently out of stock on TF201's & keyboard docks. :-(

Hi everyone noob here loved the video
my tf201 was at 100% battery in the morning around 16:00 i took it out
of its case and it was on FIRE
the battery dropped to 15% and the device is sluggish and feels weak
from day one the device had weird stucks and reboots which occured
once every two days with no reason
for those helping out :
it was in a cold office no sun or heat source
it is coupled with a dock 100% of the time
no apps were opened while i took it this morning
im on ICS 4.0.3 and asus version 9.4.2.21
no fluids touched a table this thing was resting on
the device never fell or was smacked or blunted by anything
!!its one month old!!
my questions are:
what the hell happend?!
should i send it back to repair ?
(i hate the long wait time and dont want them yanking out a peice from it)
can these problems be because of software?
and if so would a smooth and stable rom fix the problems?
is there anything i can look for that will tell me my problem?
anyone willing to help will be greatly appriciated
noob or master leave some kind of reply
and thanks for taking the time reading through this
regards max
How long have you owned it? Less than 30 days? Please say that you still have the packaging.
Take it back to the retailer for replacement or 30-day return. If they refuse to do either, tell them that you're going to refuse the credit card charge. You have a lot of power in this equation. Retain the device, refuse the credit card charge. Once they acquiesce, you can give them the Prime.
Get names. Document, document, document.
From what I've read here, dealing with Asus RMAs is a nightmare!
hi,
Thank you for looking at my question. I have a prime which is roughly 15 months old. rooted and running the new energy rom. I use this both for work and at home daily and I am totally happy with everything about it.
Over the past week or so I've noticed that it's hard to plug in the charger every evening and today when I plugged it in the display went dark. You can very faintly see the start up screen but no real lighting at all. I took a look at the charger and several of the cooper peices are bent over and you can see a bit of where on both sides from 15 months of use.
I just contacted Asus customer service and got the normal caveats you typically get when you attempt to return for repair anything by phone...it will take about a month, you need to pay for shipping, etc.
i checked this forum using keywords like "Damaged charger" and didn't come across anyone else that's had this problem. Is anyone familiar with this issue? There's no reason except the charger (and the possible short to the display I just caused plugging it in ) that I wouldn't be happy with this tablet for a few more years. I just don't want to put out, potentially, comparatively alot of money if the plug has been failing regularly for others too.
Anyone familiar with this problem? does anyone who's dealt w/ Asus care to guesstimate a cost?
Thank You for your help.
