CompactFlash Cards about max Memoy? - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

Hi!
What are the biggest Cards, the XDA can handle?
512 or up to 1GB Cards?
Thanx!
Stevie

Memory Cards
The xda uses Secure Digital (or SD) cards, not CompactFlash (different shape). As far as I know, the biggest SD card you can buy is 512mb.
Regarding what you should buy, 128mb really is the smallest size I would recommend. In fact, if you're going to be using your xda for music playback, I would recommend 256mb.
I have a 128mb and once you have a couple of apps and data on your storage card, you can only fit three or four CDs onto the card. This only lasts a couple of days if you're always listening on the train, and it's a bit of trouble up and downloading CDs all the time. WMP in XP makes it better (never thought I'd say that about a Microsoft product!), but it still takes up time you'd rather be doing something else with.
Finally, the cheapest place I have seen SD cards recently is on www.expansys.com
rgds,
Alex.

SD cards

hi all ive read a few quotes from you all about sd cards and the problems you have had, im after buying two sd cards a 128mb just to store music on and a 512mb for media files / dvds/ films on. the question is what card or cards would you recommend as there are so many out there and some do not work or you have had problems working, your feed back is most welcome
I have a 256Mb Lexar with 32x write.....
Regardless of what card you buy, I've heard complaints about data being erased from the card on the WM2003 OS.... Its really annoying.... It has happened to me too.... So I just keep the card locked....
Apart from that, no complaints with the Lexar card I have.... works like a charm.... All the cards that are out there are good.... Lexar and Sandisk seem to be the more popular ones....
Hi, I've just got a Kingston 512MB SD card, are they any good? I do not have my XDA II as yet but am hoping to get it some time this week (waiting on stock )
I am getting very slow speeds on my SD card, even in a SD card reader in Windows XP a few friends have also reported the same problems of speed changes and slowing down... any ideas?
I also want to buy a Kinston 256 for my XDA running on WM2003. ANy comments on the speed or reliability of Kingston? I also have eyes on Viking and Smart coz they are the cheaper ones. Any comments on those brands?
Unfortunatly I have not been able to get my hands on any others, but the Kingstone ones seems to be working with no trouble what so ever so looks goot but not sure how fast they are ment to run or any thing like that so can't offer much information unfortunatly...
Can any one shed some light on the subject for us????
there are tons of sd card benchmarks and comparisons just search google
http://www.google.dk/search?q=sd+flash+benchmark&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=da&btnG=Google-søgning
from that search i found this

Thanks for the links
I've been through google a bit but there is so much out there I was wondering if any one found any decent ones that are well laid out with graphs and all... comparing many brands of SD...
well i would search on these 2 sites i recall a test of what you are looking for just with CF cards i'm not sure if a company's CF card speed give an impression of their SD card speed or if they also have SD card banchmarks but anyway (sandisk were always last when it comes to speed )

Cheers once again Rudegar... will take a look at the sites

MAX SD card size and manufactor recomendations please...

Title says it all. I want to get an SD card for my XDA, is there a maximum size that the XDA can read (nothing mentioned in the manual) and after reading the horror stories here about wiped and corrupted data, is there any manufactorer that anyone would recomend?
hey mate,
i used to have a 512 mb sd by sandisk...hated it. it only allowed me to use around 380 mb; then would reject any other files i attempted to save in it. also had a 128mb by sandisk and same problem as the 512; couldn't use all of the said capacity. sold them; then got a panasonic 128 mb card. loved it. so i went and tried a panasonic 512 and worked great as well. since then i've been using panasonic sd cards. other guys in the forum should have other brands which work well with them. no offense to those using sandisk though
cheers

i'm using a Twinmos Ultra-X 512MB SD card and i haven't experienced those memory wipeout problem that other users were talking about. didn't notice any problems with it.
02 XDA2 v1.72WWE PH10B
I use both 256mb and 512mb Viking SD cards. Both work great (though a little slow when writing to them) and they are cheap on ebay. Never had the memory wipe problem either.
XDA running WM2003.
SD card for QTEK 2020
Hi,
I've bought an Extrememory SD card 1 Go (almost the cheaper one !) and it works perfectly !
I am using Kingston 256mb.
DONT BUY
They work VERY slow, resulting in malfunctioning TomTom when I activate POI in navigation mode.
if your going to buy SD cards try to find those high speed versions.
Hi !
How can we know the speed of SD or MMC Card? But for Flash drive (mobile storage) we can know it is a USB-1.0 or USB-2.0.
Can anyone can give me some details about this? Now, I'm using a 256 MB MMC (NCP HEXON brand), it works great but somebody told me that it works slower than (Transcand brand).
Sorry, I think it is a stupid question but I really don't understand about it.
Thanks in advance,
I'm using a Lexar 32x 512mb card in my XDA2 and its great.
I use it for TomTom Navigator GPS and the "higher speed" makes a very significant difference to the time taken to access data from the card.
What's the difference then between the SD cards and the MMC? I have notices the MMC has a price premimum so I am assuming its faster/better.. Can the XDA I use either?
Edy\Anyone else, your original post said XDA but I have noticed that everyone who replied has an XDA II. Is their a difference for a max card size (SD\MMC) that can be used between the two.

MiniSd ultra or not?

Is there really significant difference in peformance for Wizard, or should I save my money for other toys?
does the speed of the minisd card really matters?
Yes, the speed is very important espcially if you go up to 2GB.
I have 2 miniSD 2GB cards, one is regular no brand and the other is TOPRAM 120X.
With the latter it runs pretty well while in regular it is lagging and crawling.
If you consider using something like TomTom (which is space intensive), you might consider buying the 2GB miniSD.

I was under the rather strong impression that the device was the limiting factor and a fast memory card was pointless in a pda. Also, because its obviously Random Access Memory the size wouldn't matter - it doesn't flick through sequentially to find the data...
But I might be wrong.
I had a SanDisk miniSD card, and I upgraded to the TopRam 2gb card. I can tell a difference in speed when taking pictures and looking at pictures using the "pictures & videos" application.
also, my SanDisk had an issue where the 9100 wouldn't "see" it after it was re-inserted. I had to soft-reset to mount the card properly. My TopRam doesn't have this issue.

4 Gb secure digital??

hi guys!
Does anybody know if the 4gb sd works with the wallaby??
I've heard about someone who successfully uses the 2 gb sd.....
But somewhere else they say that the limit is 1gb...
since the price of the 4gb sd is so low...
http://cgi.ebay.it/150X-4GB-ADATA-S...temZ7605863020QQcategoryZ122613QQcmdZViewItem
and what if, the sd doesn't work with xda?xda will see it as a 1gb card, or will not recognize it at all??
thank you in advance
I just got a Transcent 4GB SD Card. It works fine in the Wallaby. Wallaby recognizes it as 4GB, just perfect. Windows Media Player also recoqnizes it well. Now we have iPod nano 4GB inside our Wallaby.
nice! i bought the 2gb Adata sd and it works fine too....maybe i will buy the 4 gb...or maybe i'll wait i while:i've heard rumors about the development of a 8gb sd!!!
i have no wallaby but universal and purchased the adata 4gb from fastmemoryman. unfortunately after two weeks of using it got damaged while it was inserted in my universal and avantgo was updating the news channels. a write error message appeared and since this moment i could no longer read the card, no reformatting, nothing. it is no longer recognized by any sd-devices like card reader, pda, digital camera. i have tried several devices, no success. so i contacted fastmemoryman and he offered me to replace the card as it has lifetime warranty. this is what i am going to do tomorrow.
my post should not be any kind of claiming against fastmemoryman or adata sd-cards as i have purchased an adata 2gb from fastmemoryman about 1,5 years ago and this card is in use day-by-day with no problems.
maybe 4gb cards are more sensitive but this is just an idea as only one bad sd-card in my whole life of using sd-cards is no good proof for such a statement
regards
peter
Recently I found out that Wallaby does not display every file written to the 4GB SD Card. Those files were written to the 4GB SD Card from a Windows XP Machine. And when accessed from the Wallaby, in the File Explorer, many of those files did not show up.
Same thing from Media Player, in the Local Content, a large portion of the MP3 files did not show up.
However, Wallaby does show correct size of the SD Card in the Settings, Memory, Storage Card.
So, please be aware of this. My 4GB SD Card is the Transcent one.
This problem does not exist when using the same SD Card in a Universal.
humm disappeared files..
it happens sometimes also with my 128 kingston sd,,don't know if it's really an sd problem..
anyway i solved the problem doing a soft reset...strange anyway....

how does the sliding even work?
i've been sliding back and forth, and i keep getting the same memory.
I know it's hacked, because it says the card is full at 600mb, when it's a 2gb card.
Thanks
I bought 4gb nonHC sd mini - after filling cca 1,5gb it erased 90% of data stored. It was 2gb card formatted as 4GB - common fraud (I didn't know about that kind of fraud at that time.)
I couldn't even restore them via sector-by-sector scanning software. I've run a test utility and it reported my card as faulty. I threw it away - I didn't want that card anymore. Non-realiable card is too much risk for me.
I bought new card (2gb) kingston so I know I won't have to worry if it will crash or something.
found some thrown in the garage...
Four years ago I chucked these hacked SD cards in the garage to hide in a pile of books. Finally dug them out, and am running a "last chance" test on them. I bough them, one from China, and another from a USA seller. I contacted the USA seller, and they send another. It was also bad. Tossed into the garage as no repair solution existed for SD media hacks. Now I see it's RDiskUtility. Will try it anr eport findings along with findings on the new mp3 players
I just bought some MP3 device/cameras from one china seller, one 2 GB unit for $5, the other, a 16GB unit for $6. The prices that I won them at tell me that they may not be fully true to their size.
My primary test is simple, I copy tracks from DVDs I have stored on my theater player's wifi drive. I check for corrupted tracks, which gives me a rough litmus test. If it's not true to size, I'll have to do some futher work.
Based on my experience with cheap Chi-cameras, picture quality of the camera is expected to be bad. Will post full data once I get them.
I bought a 16 gb card from ebay seller cointasdeals.
here is a link http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180509991700&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
http://myworld.ebay.com/cointasdeals/
it was supposed to be a kingston 16gb card but i am not sure what it really is.
when i get home i will try to format my card as a lower size and hope that it works. I spoke to my local police and they said that they could not do anything.
Got to get authentic ones
I suggest buy orig memcards. A lot of rigged ones are out in the market. You may buy it for a cheap deal but you may have trouble in the days to come. Quality is important. It can save us more money.
