We get well over 1000 visitors a day, and we will have over 1000 messages posted in a month. Regular visitors have noticed: this place needs a little more structure.
As you can see the forum page now points to a list of multiple fora. The old XDA-developer forum is now called 'General', and holds everything that doesn't fit in any of the following categories:
- ROM updates
- Unlocking
- GPRS/WAP settings
- Accessories
- Pocket PC
- Off-topic
- Programmers corner
- Other techie stuff
The latter two fora are for highly technical discussions only, and any postings made there that are of a more general nature will be moved to one of the other fora.
I will be moving messages from 'General' to the other fora over the next day or two, and each forum will have an announcement message explaining what it's for.
We will be pointing people to the PDAphonehome FAQ and other places for these questions that keep popping up over and over.

Hello all,
We got Flyer/View Q&A and other sub-forums with Flyer/View titles now. In each sub-forum rules remain the same as throughout XDA so let's keep it clean and assist each other. For those who may not know forum rules or a new here's a little fyi for posting and view here for full rules (link)
1. Search before posting.
Use one of our search functions before posting, whether you have a question or something new to share, it's very likely someone already asked that question or shared that news.
3. Post only using a clear subject and message.
You're most likely to receive a helpful answer to your question if you use a short subject title that describes your problem and a message that explains in detail what your problem is and what you've tried to solve it.
Example: [View] Stuck in Bootloader or [Flyer] Unable to connect to wifi, etc.
Remember to place prefix for each device: [Q-Flyer] & [Q-View]

Kinda covered by #3 in the Forum Rules, but posters should avoid subject lines like "Help". Its pretty obvious, since the huge majority of the people posting in Q&A are looking for help of some sort. A subject that quickly describes WHAT you want help with would be much more relevant (and probably get more views and replies). The Flyer forum is not too bad right now, but on some of the other device forums, you will see 4 or 5 threads all titled "Please help!!!" or something similar.

It looks like your request Remember to place prefix for each device: [Q-Flyer] & [Q-View] is mostly ignored, so I thought about some more steps to implement like:
- Forcing to choose the device when submitting a new thread
- Create a separate forum
- Delete or close any non complying thread with a link to the rules
And surely some other ones I didn't think about... Even leaving the situation as is

So, over the course of the last few weeks, Red and myself have been noticing a large increase in posts that are either duplicates, in the wrong section, or even have nothing to do with the phone all together. Because of this, i think it is a good time to remind users of XDA's community rules, and some specifics about posting on this board...
1) Like every other board, this forum follows XDA guidelines (In case people forgot, they are at the bottom) This means, when posting here (or anywhere else), you should be:
- Polite to other users
- Not using profane language
- Searching before making a new post
- ect... (read the rules!)

2) Search search search!
This has been popping up lately, and it is a little distressing. Before posting anywhere, users need to search before making a post.. odds are, your problem/question isn't new, and has been asked before. If there is already a thread, post in that already, and keep all knowledge/discussion in the same place (this helps future searches as well). If you are unhappy with XDA's built in search feature, Google is a great way to go; simply put in your search term, followed by "site:http://forum.xda-developers.com". This will tell google to search only XDA, and show your relevant results. If neither search yields anything, then you are ok to post.
3) Development board posting... This seems to be a real problem, so i am going to try to spell it out simply. The development board should ONLY have new topics containing:
- A new or updated rom release
- A new or updated kernel release
- A new or updated phone specific software feature or patch (improved touchscreen driver, improved wifi driver, etc).
- Information about hardware level phone specifics (not questions, but actual research about the hardware; such as overclocking or unlocking hidden features).
Posts in active topics need to be kept on topic as well. If you appreciate a devs work, it is ok to say so, but any further (general) discussion should be taken to a new thread in the general board. This includes things like benchmarks, themes, or tweaks. Only dev specific comments should be made in the dev thread (bug reports, feature feedback, install proceedures, etc).
With that said, and i hate to do this, we have to start cracking down on controlling the out of controll posts. I do not want to be the bad guy, but I think people are getting the feeling that they can do whatever they wish, to the detrmement of the community.. and that has to stop. Up unitl now, i have been letting alot of things slide, but consider this fair warning.. users who post without searching (if another user is able to link you to a thread with the same topic, you obviously didn't serach), or post in the wrong board, will be subject to warnings or infractions (depending on the severity and number of occurrences).
Users who flame, will be guaranteed an infraction. Believe me, i FULLY understand the frustration that many users have with what has been going on; I hate it as much as you do. But this goes for al users; following the stupidity of one user, does not mean you can too. From here on out, EVERY party involved in flaming will be held to the same accountability... If a user flames somebody, please... bite your tongue, and report it. Let us mods clean up the mess; arguging with the users only further derails threads.
As always, Myself and Red are here to help the community. If you have questions, TALK TO US. Ask us.. we really aren't bad people... we promise!
Along with Divine_Madcat's awesome announcement, I just wanted to further drive the point that we want this place to flourish with activity, but the right kind of activity. Developers developing for themselves and the public. Asking if anyone is having problems or features that they would like o have added. Members being able to read up on their device and learn how to tweak it to run they way that they want... not having to dig through countless threads and posts of mundane and repetitious whining.
To do this, we all have to work together, Mod > Developer > Senior Member > and yes, even the n00bs. The time it takes to write out a hateful message to somebody could have used the same amount of time and energy to help the member out or point them in the right direction. We all would like to see a more forceful way to make new members search and read before posting (which is in the works) but until that is put in play, we all can be a little more helpful... and when there is just too much clutter, thats where we step in and clean up the mess.

To all forum readers and lurkers, welcome to a new and experimental section of the forums! The PC Hardware forums are part of our expansion into a limited discussion of PC hardware for our enthusiasts and developers. So while the normal forum rules apply you may notice that things here will be slightly different and a work in progress.
Here's what you can expect in each of the forums within here:
PC Hardware Portal Article Discussion is where the portal team will be posting a new thread for each article on the category. While Disqus isn't a bad option it's also a very limited one in comparison to our forum membership - and so we'd like to try moving some of that discussion here. It also gives us the ability to give some behind-the-scenes updates and additional content that may not fit the Portal well, such as build logs and photos of projects we're working on for Portal articles.
Forum members are more than welcome to continue the discussion but new threads will only be created by us here. If you want to carry on a discussion of a different topic, we have you covered.
The PC Hardware For Linux Developers section is ideally for continuing the discussion and talking about topics near and dear to our developers' hearts. Whether you're just starting out and want to know how to build your own kernel/ROM, set up a kitchen to theme, or something more advanced... if it's about Linux this is the place to talk about it!
While the name doesn't call it out specifically it's well known that a subset of developers use Mac OS X instead - feel free to post in here too on your topics. To help clarify we ask that the prefix [OSX] be used so readers know this deals with a Mac-specific topic.
Lastly our PC Hardware General is for all other discussions under the sun and related to the topic. We're not looking to replace your go-to sites but rather foster a conversation in addition to that. And while we certainly understand that these discussions can get "heated" we ask that people treat each other with the same civility and respect as you would anywhere else on the XDA forums.
Your moderation team can be found in the upper right hand corner under "Moderators." Please feel free to contact us if there are any questions/concerns. In addition you will likely find me around here quite often - part of my job as PC Hardware Editor is to help foster those discussions.
