GSM ERROR - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

Hi all, I have an O2 XDA 64meg, running 3.16.32 and radio 4.20, the problem I am having is the XDA will not enable the phone, if i do many soft resets it still wont work, and it takes about 1 and a half minutes to actually boot into windows, and then it is very slow, the phone is not available, so i went into Wallaby bootloader ver 5.15 and it says WAIT then after a few secs its says GSM ERROR, i have done a master reset and this did not work either, is there a fix for this or any other info I need to resolve this prob, any help is most appreciated, Thanks, DoZZa

Call your network and ask them about your SIM - check the voltage, the profile, so and and so forth, that's likely the cause. If they confirm a new SIM is required then the people you signed a contract with - not necessarily your network - should get a new one to you.
If that does not work then the unit is knackered.

XDAII: Locked out for 15 minutes / Forever with Sim

I looked all over these forums for evidence of this problem, apologies if the solution is here and I'm asking a redundant questions!
Just got an XDA II from a friend and have 2 problems:
 1) On a hard reset or simply after removing the battery, I just get the O2 splash screen for about 15 minutes (no button presses or screen taps will affect it), then poof, stuff starts installing and suddenly I have a working PDA.
 2) If I put my SIM card in the device, this "poof" never happens, the device stays on the splash screen indefinitely. I've used XDA Unlock which as told me that the device is ALREADY unlocked.
Thoughts? Do I need to install a new ROM or am I simply missing something else? I'd love to be able to use this with ATT here in the US if possible.
Device status is:
ROM: 1.52.OOWWE
Date: 10/23/03
RADIO: 1.05.13
PROTO: 1337.13
EXTROM: 1.03.27
Thanks!
Did this start happening before you used xdaunlock. That program is for the xda1, the unlock for xda2 is a totally different application, when you run the xda2 unlock it gives you the sid number to enter when you put in a sim from a different provider. I think your phone is still locked and it is probably the sim that is hanging it. You need this.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/xda2unlock
I did use xda2unlock
Oops, I should have been clearer, this WAS the application I used (It's very clear that it's for unlocking the 2, not the 1). It "worked" in terms of talking to the device, but no results given that it figured it had no work to do.
Is my other other option to unlock this to go to O2?
...and no, the behavior has been consistent...
...before and after using the ap. The other thing the Sim card seems to do is lock the device up, whereas without it the device EVENTUALLY unlocks and lets you use the PDA features. Rather annoying.
Sounds like a faulty unit to me, no way should you be waiting that long for a boot, yes the sim seems to make it worse but its bad to begin with, it should be sent for repair I think. I am sure the xda2 does some hardware checks on boot and maybe its having a hard time getting past one of them, do you have an sd card inserted in the slot? And how does it function once it gets past boot? Does it survive a soft reset ok? Are there any error messages when it begins its install procedure?
It's WORKING!!! It's WORKING!
I'm not sure whether this is SUPPOSED to be a problem or not, but LOCKING the Sim card door down causes this unit to go into this wierd state I've been experiencing...just letting the batttery press it down in place (but not securing it by pulling that little tan lever to the left) makes ALL the difference.
HOW ODD! Or did I miss something that should have told me that this would screw things up?
The phone indeed was already unlocked, picked up my network beautifully. Thanks for your input!

I've done something - no mobile signal HELP!

Hi, I've had my XDA wallaby for about 4 years now, no problems ever until tonight.
It's got the Rom 1.2 upgrade and I usually run a Tesco's O2 PAYG sim with never a problem.
I've got an Orange card that I wanted to use - this seems to have caused the problem.
I was looking through the forum to try to get the Orange sim to work and have, I think, re-set wrongly the GSM band and the autoconfiguration.
So now whichever of the 3 GSM bands I set my XDA won't recognise either the Tesco 02 Sim or the orange sim HELP??
Also, I've looked in the auto config list and neither appear, again HELP!!
Can anyone suggest the correct settings for tesco o2 since I'm stuck HELP
It's fixed itself! Weird. Read on...
So there I was, staring glumly at my number one piece of kit now w/o a telephone then all of a sudden, up comes the signal bars and the 'G' !!!
About 5 minutes after my last post.
So I guess the message here is:
1. leave well alone
2. write down EVERYTHING before you play, and
3. The XDA knows more about itself that me the user does, since it seems like 'it' fixed itself.
So back to the original issue that I got so badly wrong.
Q: Can I use an orange PAYG sim in this phone w/o killing it again?
And now it's dropped the connection again !!!
I know this must be my meddling but can anyone tell me the correct
autoconfig and band settings for O2 Tescos.
I've used this network as PAYG on my phone for about 2 years with no problems until yesterday ???
Or other than those 2 settings can any other settings influence connection, bearing in mind it used to work perfectly, and did for a few minutes last night???
status update - problem solved
I think I found out the problem.
When in the phone module, select:
Tools > Options > Network
Network selection needed to be Automatic but for some reason, probably my medelling it was set to manual and was taking about 5-10 minutes to find the connection.
Now, as auto it connects in seconds and then all is well.
The post might help others in the future.

i got an 8525 from cingular, trying to use it in t-mobile networks, no luck.

update
i've been pushin hard to get this thing functional, and i finally got it. it was tricky to get the system to push through the software with vista, but i followed a few directions (listed below) to help along the process.
if anyone has windows vista, i would highly advise you to try this method. it worked for me first time up.
http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=23&Itemid=27
using this software:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293665
(be sure to click on the lower link in the first post)
first get your system compatible with the gear (let windows detect all the stuff), install windows mobile device center.
reboot
next install the new drivers for the htc usb sync.
reboot
finally, extract and run the unlocking software.
watch your phone for the program. it takes a few minutes, so just be patient. i think if i would've found the vista methods prior to starting this, i would have been finished by now. oh well. good luck!!
edit: nm you got it
Same problem...
I had the same problem however I was just waiting to receive that damn subsidy unlock code from AT&T. Their retrieval process is very slow and painful, but unlocked my 8525 no problem. My question for you is did you notice a difference in call volume between carriers?? I am trying to determine if this was the fault of flashing my ROM to a custom one, or if that's just how t-mobile sounds...

Call volume
I never had AT&T, so i couldn't tell you honestly. One thing I am noticing is that the dropped calls are not as frequent since I upgraded from a samsung.
The trickiest part of modding this WM6 phones, is that you gotta have the comm stuff current with T-Mobile.
I haven't been able to get my MMS working. Now i just messed up my networking stuff. I have some cab files for the T-Mobile devices, but i don't know how to install them. I am working on it.
As far as volume though (back to the subject, dumbo)... It seems clearer somewhat.
sim unlock
hey did you get any helpful advise on how to unlock the sim on your 8525 b cuz im having the same problem except it says 5 times tried(HELP)

Sim unlock
Did you get any helpful info on the sim lock for your 8525 smartphone bcuz im having same problem except mine says tried 5 times please help if you know how

Unlocked but can't see T-Mobile

Here's my problem, hopefully somebody can figure it out before I give up and sell this to somebody with AT&T.
I received a freshly refurbished AT&T 8525 (from ebay) and wanted to use it with a T-Mobile SIM. I upgraded to the latest AT&T distribution (WM6, downloaded from HTC), ran the HTC_Hermes_SIM_CID_Unlock_v3a successfully, put my SIM in and everything worked. After calling a friend and talking for about 5 minutes, the call mysteriously ended. I tried recalling (wouldn't connect) and then restarted the phone but it wasn't getting a signal.
Fearing the worst, I tried flashing the latest radio, rerunning the Unlock, and flashing various other ROMs (including an HTC, Schap's, and Pv Dvh Wm6.1 19209) but there was no change. The icon on the Today screen would either give an exclamation point or just continue scanning. If I went into the phone settings and tried to switch to manual network selection, I would sometimes get a choice of T-Mobile or Cingular but any connection attempt would result in a "Failed to register to network" message.
My SIM card works perfectly in both my old phone (HTC Tornado) and an older unlocked Nokia.
My last attempt was to put my friend's AT&T card into my A&T 8525 and it connected just fine with calling ability and everything! I've since run unlock many times, reflashed the radio, installed other ROMs and installed various version of Hard-SPL but none of them seem to be able to connect to the T-Mobile network using my SIM card (but have no problem connecting with my friend's). I can see the phone book on my SIM card so I know its not a bad SIM connection and it does not prompt me for a password (as it first did when I placed my SIM card in the phone when I first received it) so I'm pretty sure it is actually unlocked.
Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated!
Try borrowing a friend's phone with AT&T, shove his sim into your phone and talking on it for a few minutes and see if it still happens there. If It doesnt then try your SIM again. Also, try reflashing your radio without your simcard inserted.
I tried reflashing the latest radio without a SIM, then inserted my SIM but there was no change. I'll try talking on it for a while with my friend's SIM and see if anything happens, but I'm doubtful. Thanks for the help. Any other suggestions?
I've noticed that when I go into Settings>Phone>Network and select Manual, all the cooked ROMs I've tried end in a "Cannot read settings from the network." while AT&T's gives a selection of T-Mobile or Cingular (neither of which actually let me register to a network, though).
I put my friend's AT&T card in and called my own cell phone. The connection died after 5 minutes, but then I called my own cell phone again and they stayed connected for 10 minutes before I ended it. I put my SIM back into the 8525 and still no signal.
While the AT&T SIM is inserted, the Settings->Phone->Network screen is different. It just says:
Current Network: AT&T
and has a button for Find Network which just pops up a window saying "Registering on the network...
Any other ideas?
Send it back to whoever sold this to you on ebay. Not worth all the hassle that you are going thru. I have the same phone and bought mine off ebay as well. It worked perfectly out of the box with no problems. I have t-mobile and when I placed the sim in - bam - the phone just worked. I had to configure the pop3 email and mms settings manually, but that was it. I have htc's wm6 on it.
Thanks for the advice, but the first one I got from this guy the screen died after a couple of days. He said it was under warranty so I sent it back to him to get it replaced and it took him 3 months to finally return it to me. I really don't want to deal with him again.
I was wondering if there was a difference between the SIM cards. Could you please run the "SIM Manager" Application on your phone. Then go to Menu>Tools>SIM Information and check out the numbers there. Mine says:
Total Phonebook Size:
250
No. of Phonebook Entries
20
Max. length for name:
16
Max. length for phone number:
50
SMS Message storage capacity:
30
Although my friend who has an AT&T 3G SIM has slightly higher numbers for max. length of name, phone number, and SMS storage capacity.
I've also heard some stuff about specifically asking to get your account 3G enabled, but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with this problem.
I figure I'll go down to a T-Mobile store and see if I can get somebody to let me try a newer SIM in the phone before giving up completely and selling it.
That's too bad. I bought my phone from zendoo and they have a pretty good rating off of ebay. I'd hate to find out that your ESN or whatever is corrupted. Here are my settings
Total Phonebook Size:
250
No. of Phonebook Entries
11
Max. length for name:
16
Max. length for phone number:
40
SMS Message storage capacity:
30
Oh well, I guess I'll see what I can sell this for, wait until my contract is up at the end of summer, and then see what new phones are out then. Thanks for your guys help.

Preparing sim... Problem with HTC DROID DNA

Good afternoon. And sorry for NOOB question. But!
I tried a lot of suggestions from this forum to solve my problem - but still can't open CID.
So - let me explain the problem - I've bought a phone in USA and using it in Russia. Starting ftom the first day the phone epprox. 1 time per 1-2 hours lost the connections and show sign "preparing sim" - At that time I can't call, can't send sms or using internet. Plus as well I can't update it - because I have no CDMA connection in Russia. Plus sometimes probably when this problem happens during talking - my opponent hear me so worth so sometimes better to call again.
That's a description of my Droid DNA:
Android 4.1.1.
Software # 1.15.605.4 710RD
PRI 1.98_002
I will so much appreciate if somebody will help me with that. Thank you!!!

Regarding the sim problem, it sounds like you are experiencing what other have experienced here in the USA. Some people have had success taking the sim out and then putting it back in (and maybe cleaning the sim with an eraser on the back of a pencil). Others have had to get another sim card from their provider.
About the update - you have 3 options:
1 - unlock, root, and s-off your phone - then you can install the updates manually (this is what I would do)
2 - some others have had success removing the sim (and setting the phone to CDMA in Settings:Callreferred Network) and then connecting to wifi
3 - wait for the update "ruu" file to be released/leaked

Thanks for the answer!
I try to put another sim, same as sim of different operators.
Number 1 - I can't root - CID does not work.
Number 2 - try to do - phone looking for an updates - but without any unswer
Number 3 - Can you explain what is it?
According to both Verizon and HTC, there was a known issue with the phone software and not being able to read the SIM card. It happened to mine about ten times every week until an update was released to supposedly fix it in February. I still get the error from time to time, but far less than I did previously. If you've rooted and flashed a ROM prior to February, I would suggest making a backup and restoring the phone back to stock. Once you've done this, do the update to the new firmware and then reroot and restore from your backup. This should, I think, fix most SIM issues.
