XDA-developers at CCC Camp 2003 - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

Hey,
Let's all go to CCCC2003, the second CCC Camp. It's near Berlin, in Germany, this coming August 7-10. Check out:
https://wiki.camp.ccc.de/Camp/view/Main/CampOverview
or
http://www.ccc.de/camp
We'll make sure the XDA-developer presence is easy to find: we'll probably even have a large tent of our own. We will be set up to take apart XDAs, possibly fixing small problems. We'll have a workbench, connectors, scope, measurement gear, soldering irons, shrink tubing, wire, some parts and much more, and we might even sell cables or make weird cables on the spot if the project looks interesting enough.
Flights to Berlin are probably in the same price-range as your XDA cost you, or much cheaper still. So no excuses of being stuck behind enemy lines, oceans or other minor obstacles.

You giving away XDA-DEVELOPERS T-shirts, and balloons?

Lazyboy Hutch...

I just sent the images below to my Father-in-law to tends to make stuff out of wood. He makes beautiful hutches, cabinets, hope chests, cribs, and other wood furniture pieces that he gives to family members and does it as a hobby. He makes great stuff.
My wife is always complaining that I clutter up the end table near my lazyboy with stuff... I have a TV tray like thing in front of the chair where I have a notebook most of the time so that I can be out with the family while working on my second job and having a storage area that looks like a piece of furniture would be handy.
The hutch idea would give me a place to put that stuff, and provide a central power station at the same time. I am always needing to temporarily plug something into the wall as well, and this would give me a way of doing that without diving behind the couch to get to the socket. Sometimes I need to program a router or plug in a backup drive etc... and I have a power dock now there for my phone, charge my tablet etc...
While I could work from my home office, it tends to get hot this time of year and I prefer to spend more time out with the family.
I think these things should be in stores...
What do you think??

Looks nice, and u seem to have most of it figured out, down to the power outlet. very nice.
Just found out that he is building it! Should have it sometime in late May. Will take pictures when I get it.
That's pretty awesome. They should build that into entertainment systems as well. A central plug at the bottom of it to plug into the wall then two power strips that have like 10-15 plugs. We are such power hogs.

Thats awesome I need one lol
I like your idea. Have a few of them made. If you can do it for a decent price, I would buy one without thinking twice.
It has arrived... Already put it to use with all my Raspberry Pi clutter...

Car Mount

Now that I`m getting my dongle I`m wondering if anyone out there has tried a car mount for their Prime. With the large screen and now functional GPS this would make a phenomenal in car GPS unit. My only concern would be damaging the Prime due to a bracket not supporting it properly causing it to fall. Anyone`s experience would be appreciated.

I have this one from Arkon, and love it. The extension arm rests on my dash, and the suction cup is relatively low on the window. I have never experienced any problems with the Prime falling out, or the whole mount falling down, because since the arm rests on the dash, there is minimal weight applied to the suction cup.

Got that same one but from Amazon. Only $30 w/ my Prime.
Also picked this one up for my little boy and my backseat passengers lol

I bought this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Arkon-TAB178-Removable-No-Glue-Sticky-Car-Dash-Desktop-Tablet-and-iPad-Mount-/360446004720?pt=US_Tablet_Accessories&hash=item53ec418df0#ht_816wt_1163 one from Arkon. Love the sticky pad it has. Same sticky pad that is on the mount for my HTC phone. Same sticky material that the whacky wall walkers had in the 80s. sticks to ANYTHING. Still waiting for it to come in .... was very hard to find on ebay, its the only one of its kind that i found after days of searching for a non piece of crap.

I haven't got my dongle yet, but the tabs that hold the Prime are adjustable, so I'm guessing that they can spread far enough apart for the dongle to fit.
If someone can measure the length of the dongle, I can measure it.
Bob
I just measured my dongle.....man that just doesn`t sound right. Anyways it`s 7 1/8 inch wide. Can you let me know if this would fit with your mount. I`ve looked at tons of mounts and yours seems to be one of the better solutions right now.
Thanks

Well, the spread on the mount tabs only gives about 4" of clearance. BUT, in reality, you only need one tab on the top holding it. Attached is a pic of the keyboard (since I'm using the TP for the pic and it shows the edge of the dongle area) and the keyboard still holds solidly in there. Also notice my mounting. The extension arm (adjustable) rests on the dash, so, with the tablet supplying a downward weight, the suction cup would be "pushed" into the window so it's not like phone/gps attachments where everything tends to pull it off the window, the TP is actually doing the opposite.
The tabs are spring-loaded, so in order to insert the TP between the tabs, you would insert the top of the TP, push upward, then slide the bottom in.
I can't really tell you the force required, but it's definitely not minimal.
I think that the TP, in the mount, would stay in position even in a front or rear end collision.
I made one search my user name & you will find photos here

LMAO
Looks legit tho
I received my Arkon windshield mount today. With the dongle attached I can use all 4 feet of the bracket because the bottom of the bracket is spring loaded and easily accomodates the dongle while still keeping the tablet very secure in the mount. I haven't tried it in the car yet but the build quality seems quite good.

Did you get the same one I got, or did you get one of the variations? I was wondering if you ever got one after looking at the different options. I know that I am very happy with mine.
If you don't have a Nav program, I strongly recommend CoPilot Live Premium.
There are a couple of threads here that discuss the different options.
Bob
I got the same one. Really like the build quality and it holds the tablet very securely even with the dongle. I am trying to decide between sygic and copilot. Reviews seem to be fairly evenly split. Its too bad there is no copilot trial. I've been playing with the sygic trial and really like it.

I'd suggest going to the CoPilot site and take a look at the video. From what I understand, all the add-ons for Sygic make it more expensive then CoPilot Live Premium....and I would definitely recommend the Premium over the standard.
You might want to take a look at the comments in this thread....Quite varied

Quick update....I took my tablet for a spin in my car this afternoon. The mount is really solid and secure. The tablet is not going anywhere. If anyone else is looking for a car mount this is definitely a great option, especially at $40.
So I ended up purchasing Co-Pilot Premium and unfortunately I was really disappointed in it. I did a lot of reading of reviews and watching video reviews and it seemed like a great deal and I really good piece of software. However, the Canadian maps are ridiculously out of date. I live in a rural area of Ottawa (the capital of Canada). My house was built on a new street 11yrs ago and the street isn`t even on their map. I have also quickly noticed a few other road changes that were made in Ottawa at least 8yrs ago that are not reflected on their map. I really like the program itself, it`s fantastic...but with the map being so out of date I`d be hesitant to rely on it for a trip. I have contacted Co-Pilot and requested a refund due to how badly out of date their Canadian map is....but I`m not holding my breath.

I am surprised that their Canadian Maps are so out of date. However, they are not alone in this issue. My niece moved to a new house (similar situation) a number of years ago. So long ago, I don't remember the dates. But I had the same problem of finding her....I used Google Maps, Mapquest, Navteq Maps, Teleatlas Maps...None of those companies showed her development till very recently.
Do you know that other sources have your street identified? Maybe you're in the same boat I was...where nobody has it.
CoPilot does have a nice feature where you can identify map errors. They will check them out and fix their maps accordingly. You can submit a map Update on this page
http://www.copilotlive.com/us/support/
or even in the app itself, by going to "MyCoPilot" then selecting "Submit a Map Improvement".
FYI: Most map changes take close to a year to get to the consumer. Navteq will make changes, then quarterly will send them to the software vendors. The vendors then massage the data to meet their program requirements...After all that, it is eventually released as a map update.
I'm not sure that Sygic would be any better, and avoid NAVFree for now....They showed my location in the 'wrong town"
Bob
Yeah I was shocked. My address and all the streets around it were on google within a year. They're also on my Garmin and have been for some time. I have submitted the corrections to them and opened a support ticket as well. Sygic shows all these locations properly as well.

Have you had other Samsung Phones that were waterproof? Wondering how well the oleo phobic coating holds up after being submerged in that type of water. I was tempted to take it into the water last weekend...but I had no reason to so I didn't, hahaha.

"DEEPSEA TEST TANK
Extreme depths
To guarantee the water resistance of the Rolex Deepsea divers' watch to the extreme depth of 3,900 metres (12,800 feet), Rolex tests every single one made in a specially designed high-performance tank. This stainless steel hyperbaric tank is cast in a single piece and weighs 1.3 tonnes. It simulates the pressure at 4,875 metres (16,000 feet) below sea level, some 25 percent greater than the depth indicated on the dial. At this depth, the force exerted upon the watch is equivalent to a weight of 4.5 tonnes. This test could be destructive, meaning that the slightest weakness in a watch would cause it to implode. Obviously, all Rolex Deepsea watches offered for sale have survived it."
This is one of a handful of watches that are so tested in official labs with highly qualified engineers.
I will now show the official watch industry water resistance table:
....................................................................................................................................
"Water resistance classification
Watches are often classified by watch manufacturers by their degree of water resistance which, due to the absence of official classification standards, roughly translates to the following (1 metre ≈ 3.29 feet). These vagueries have since been superseded by ISO 22810:2010, in which "any watch on the market sold as water-resistant must satisfy ISO 22810 – regardless of the brand." [5]
Water resistance rating Suitability Remarks
Water Resistant 3 atm or 30 m Suitable for everyday use. Splash/rain resistant. Not suitable for showering, bathing, swimming, snorkeling, water related work, fishing, and diving.
Water Resistant 5 atm or 50 m Suitable for swimming, white water rafting, and fishing. Not suitable for diving and snorkeling.
Water Resistant 10 atm or 100 m Suitable for recreational surfing, swimming, snorkeling, sailing and water sports. Not suitable for diving.
Water Resistant 20 atm or 200 m Suitable for professional marine activity, serious surface water sports and skin diving. Suitable for skin diving.
Diver's 100 m Minimum ISO standard (ISO 6425) for scuba diving at depths not suitable for saturation diving. Diver's 100 m and 150 m watches are generally old(er) watches.
Diver's 200 m or 300 m Suitable for scuba diving at depths not suitable for saturation diving. Typical ratings for contemporary diver's watches.
Diver's 300+ m for mixed-gas diving Suitable for saturation diving (helium enriched environment). Watches designed for mixed-gas diving will have the DIVER'S WATCH xxx M FOR MIXED-GAS DIVING additional marking to point this out."
....................................................................................................................................
As you can read "Water Resistant 3 atm or 30 m. Suitable for everyday use. Splash/rain resistant. Not suitable for showering, bathing, swimming, snorkeling, water related work, fishing, and diving." Rating 30M yet its only splash proof!
and.....
"Water Resistant 20 atm or 200 m. Suitable for professional marine activity, serious surface water sports and skin diving. Suitable for skin diving." Rating 200M yet in reality only fir for water sports and skin diving!
From this one can clearly see how the actual rating on the rear of ones watch is a complete joke.
A handful are exceptions like yours that is why I asked you about it. I come from a family of horologists and though watches are another one of my vices I am not a horologist myself. I have been saying for decades how the watch industry screws the consumer with these highly misleading water resistance ratings etched onto the rear of the case.
Same principle applies to our mobiles. The ratings are very VERY misleading. Add to that sea water or swimming pool water and the chemicals or salt will, over time, ruin the water resistant membranes of the mobile.
I will not start to write about the physics of static water pressure at small depths V water pressure at immersion levels when force of movement is added such as a swimmers arm. Swimming with a mobile places immense pressure on the device even at 1" depth. This is due to water pressure through movement not static depth. Enough already.
The best respectful advice I would give any mobile owner is to treat the 'water resistance' as merely splash or wet hand proof. Nothing more. Its a complex situation. Original Sony Z owners know all about it lol. Sony lost a massive client base over that fiasco and Sony themselves considered closing their mobile division.

I don't take any of my watch collection near water. I don't even take them off in the bathroom and leave them there due to the steam! We are fortunate to own a tiny micro % of watches that can actually outperform the rating on the rear of the watch case! 99.9% of watches cannot, in reality, reach the depth rated on the back as shown in the table. Its rather a scandal yet the watch industry has NO OFFICIAL monitoring body for water resistance.
Oh, when I do go swimming I use a G-shock Gulfmaster. Very tough electronic time piece. Nice to debate with you.
BTW do you also collect pens? I can add that to my list of vices. Crap, forgot to add HiFi systems though over the past decade I have lapsed on that front! Thank heavens!

Omega are a superb value watch. Not a fan of the Panerai design.
As well as the high end watches I own, such as the Patek Philippe, one of my favourite's is the Lange & Sohne, I enjoy very much Oris and Tissot! I tend to use them as my daily drivers. I nearly purchased a Breguet type XXI 3880 last month but need to sell an Audermars Piguet RO first or my wife will kill me! Again! Insurance is now silly money too.

My first started collecting watches my first automatic was a Tissot PRS 516 I still have it. I will never sell it. It's quality is that of a 2,000 dollar watch for sure. Today I think Tissot has gone a little cheap but they are still good watches. I came close to getting a Breguet type XXI a couple of months ago but it did not happen. I will get a AP Royal Oak one day. I can talk watches all day like phones. I might check some pens out and see. Thanks

The recession off 2008-present has had an awful effect on the watch trade in Europe. Even among the big three conglomerates they have had to fight an ever losing battle against digital imports now smart watches have dealt a further blow. Seiko et al started the traditional watch collapse in the late 60's early 70's with cheap digital but highly accurate watches. Took the watch industry years to recover even 20% of what it had been. Not doing so good again for some again now. Rolex isn't doing badly though but many have again gone to the wall or the 'name' been purchased by the Chinese machine. Mont Blanc have either changed hands or gone also Maurice Lacroix to name but two.
I was 11 when my mother bought me my first manual, it was a black dialled Oris. I just wanted a watch with a black dial! Smashed it to pieces in the school gym same year!
My mother ran a watch parts company that held nearly 200.000 watch pieces. One night the shop was broken into and thousands of small boxes containing tiny part where all emptied onto the floor 200,000 pieces mixed together. When they where collected they didn't fill a small bin! They never sorted them all out again, only a small %. Silly thing was they NEVER closed the till and left a small amount of cash to try and avoid such an incident. They trashed the place out of pure spit? Caused havoc in the local watch trade for over a year. People eh.

People eh.

That must have been cool growing up in that type of business. Yeah that sucks some people's kids. I only have mechanical watches. No quartz watches for me. The only one I would have is maybe a Spring Drive. But I am not paying what they want for them. I do think Sekio really came up with something cool with that movement. I have always been fascinated by manual watches. The movement all the parts all the craftsmanship that goes into those movements its amazing.

I have spent hours and hours sitting looking at watch movements and pondering how the heck they made it. One reason I truly like the Lange is the way they finish off the movement. Typically Germanic as opposed to the Breguet that shows its French heritage.
Great to debate with you.

Samsung subtweets Galaxy Fold naysayers with stress test video

https://www.slashgear.com/samsung-subtweets-galaxy-fold-naysayers-with-stress-test-video-27571260/
https://youtu.be/McdgS3Popjk
The folks responsible for selling the world on the Galaxy Fold foldable display smartphone have a job to do. They’ve got to make sure that the device does its job – but they’ve got to make sure the world doesn’t perceive the device as anything but the highest of quality hardware. This is important because, as it is with any new sort of physical device with technology hereto unseen, there’s skepticism from buyers. And with at least one leaked video of an apparent bend mark in the display out in the wild, Samsung needed to act fast.
The problem with using robots to do a folding test is it isn't 'real world' experience.
For example those robots in the video are folding from a 'straight bar' at the back thus the closing and opening stress is balanced along the whole hinge equally, whereas real world people will fold from only the top or bottom, introducing admittedly small, but regular and not insignificant lateral stress to the hinge and therefore the screen.
If they'd had the robots also do a close from just the top or bottom I'd be very interested to see if their results were the same.
Unboxed therapy just did a human 1000 fold test check it out

General This just came out...

I saw that earlier this morning .. I thought it was funny. I also like that they are starting to promote the Fold. That's usually a good sign.
It's interesting that they haven't been pushing it much at all; I was expecting more for their inaugural outing.

Rather weak. So you can flip it open... is that all you got? Your target market is the woke happy-happy, joy-joy California zombies? wtf?
Like all folds it's biggest claim to fame is also it's greatest liability. From normal physical wear to firmware/software that doesn't properly integrate with the large odd shaped display. Google doesn't even attempt to allay these real concerns.
I would wait 6 months to see how it pans out before buying. Then see what the users not the reviewers are saying.

My guess is that they were waiting till closer to the actual physical release to push it. They probably wanted to see what the pre-order sales from I/O and word-of-mouth would get them before they start pushing it

Google worked closely with Samsung on android 12L (for larger screens) and then started to incorporate it in to android 13 and now 14. I think although it won't be as polished as oneui5 it will have most of the software as the z fold(apart from Samsung exclusive). With Google now working with developers hopefully more 3rd party apps will work better on a big screen. Still can't believe Instagram won't scale properly on a folding screen

Both Google and Samsung since the release of the folds have failed to deliver firmware/software innovations for that format. This lackluster behavior continues. Samsung is a mess right now, the result of 4 plus years of poor leadership.
I don't think Google's doing any better; they've made a mess of Android in my opinion. Both got more than they bargained for with the fold project. It's been a heavy, constant money and resource drain from its inception. No end in sight just promises as their beta product slowly evolves
The whole "it folds" is the same old story, again.
No expandable storage, sky high price points and you know right where it folds is where the trouble will start, sooner rather then latter. They can warranty it but you still lose time screwing with the claim, not having it, then reloading the bloody thing. Repair downtime is not why you buy an expensive flagship phone.
This N10+ has had in its over 8k hours of operation; with one replacement battery done in 1 day, it's only repair (routine maintenance as Li's don't last forever) in almost 4 years. It's last reload was over 3 years ago, no firmware upgrades or updates in all that time.
Minimal maintenance and no malware. Personally I'm sick of Google's constantly changing platform. I don't want to be constantly chasing down gremlins and optimizing new firmware on a stock device.
I've seen a lot of hyperbole in the last 3 years from both Google and Samsung. Sorry fact is they both haven't improved SOT; just slammed bigger, heavier batteries in. 4 year old hardware/firmware shouldn't get better SOT (with a smaller capacity battery) and be nearly as fast in actual usage as a new flagship. Google's insistence on cloud storage vs expandable has became a wretched handicap that reduces reliability, redundancy and eats power needlessly.
Scoped storage is another mess they added.
So yeah, another fold offering. Same old cake with different icing on it with a few new enticing trinkets sprinkled on top. Where it folds will remain it's Achilles heel and continue to cause user issues.
TLDR: This will be my 4th folder, love em. I'd suggest they aren't for you, which is fine; takes all kinds.
As for longevity, I've broken a whole lot of rectangles. I've also had many with firmware issues.
My fold 1 was sketchy, no question about it. The 2 however is still going strong and is currently in the hands of one of my grandkids at almost 3 years old. I wanted a better form factor and switched to the X Fold which is also still going strong at 1 year and change. All of them were dropped, slept on, etc. No kid gloves.
I like the folding form factor. It makes it much easier to format emails and that sort of thing. Enough so that I no longer carry a laptop or tablet with me. It also works well with desktop sites which is my preferred browsing mode. They're great for consuming media. I imagine gaming is problably better but i don't game on the phone so I can't comment on it.
Bottom line with all that is that It isn't just a gimmick. You don't fold it open a few times, the novelty wears off, and you use the front screen after that. It literally makes my portable phone usage better every day, all day. That's what you're missing. The fold out into tablet mode is the game altering paradigm. It needs to do that and nothing more and you already have a win. Software better utilizing it is just the gravy that makes it all taste better.
In many respects you're not wrong though, this phone is one I'd recommend to few people. Right off the bat you need to be an enthusiast or have plenty of discretionary income to swallow the buy-in. It's also early days and better products are coming. Possibly not even a folder, it could be rollables rule the roost in the future. Whatever it is I'll be there because I'm both: I love my gadgets and I'm old and have all the coffee tables a man needs in one life.

Was that a test of durability to see exactly how long the Fold 2 will last under the supervision of an 'almost 3 year old'?
At, not an, the subject is the phone, not the granddaughter. Lol. That one came out in the later summer and will be hitting its 3 year mark soon. That granddaughter came out 9 years ago, so past the (more) destructive ages.

Apart from both Google and Samsung still not injecting true innovation and functionality that would make full use of the real estate in both firmware and software... there's one nagging little detail.
That being no known plastics or adhesive systems are up to being bent and repeatedly full cycled 0-180° flexed at that acute of an angle. Torsional loading only exacerbates the issue as invariably the display elements bear some of this. The display is not fully isolated like on a laptop.
Flexing both the display's active matrix and some of the pixels means a higher display failure rate over it's lifespan. The fact that there's multiple laminations introduces new stress and wear factors and more complex assembly processes.
A lot more things to go wrong especially if QC is not exceptional.
The design is inherently flawed because on this.
Cool. Sounds like it's not a buy for you; nothing wrong with voting with your wallet.

I refuse to part with having a dual drive device with up to 1.5tb of storage* and a integrated spen. Not getting anything that gets worse SOT per mAh. I want less downtime and more play time.
*if used right it adds redundancy and flexibility. Every device I own is dual drive. Invariably any that were not caused issues.

Even though Google has been the leader in the field of artificial intelligence. Its AI research has led to the development of many new and groundbreaking technologies, such as self-driving cars, machine translation, and image recognition. Google's AI research is helping to shape the future of technology, but it's too bad that they haven't been able to apply that same type of energy towards the OS.
I suppose that Project Butter, Material Design and Project Treble just doesn't seem to compensate for the lusterless of said device.

Well that's a cheap shot.
We're not talking about all their vast corporate endeavors, just what applies to this form factor.
So let me help bring it in focus instead of all over the place like the Titan crew...
Google is well known to abandon technologies, products... and leaving the end users boned. Remember that.
Here's a not so glowing review by a user that wanted to see the fold as a viable everyday phone. That didn't go so well.
Aspect ratio continues to be an issue after multiple generations of firmware. Do you buy square computer monitors? Extra display area doesn't mean usable display area. Can't fix that; it is a problem of the actual display dimensions.
Apps that display on one or both displays continue to not fully utilize the real estate available to them. How many developers are going to want to make special apps for this niche market when even Google and Samsung have trouble doing it?
It's been a bottomless money sinkhole for Samsung that's diverted huge amounts of revenue from their other flagship lines for years.
Current sales still don't justify it. I think it's no coincidence that the N10+ was their zenith point.
After that project Samsung became increasingly fragmented and the fold project exacerbated this exponentially. Consequences.

I don't have high expectations. Samsung blew the roll out years ago. Most of the same issues persist although they fixed the hinge. I expect a flagship to last, be usable for years and to stay in excellent condition if properly cared for. If so the only repair should be the Li every 1-3 years.
Because of it's square unfolded form factor some format issues can't be resolved.
