Hi everyone,
Here is the email I have received from the O2 Pacific Asia in relation to the WM2003SE upgrade for XDA II:
Thank you for choosing O2!
With regards to your query below, O2 XDAII is using Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC, & the latest rom version available for upgrade is 1.60.00WWE. Currently, there is still no news the next coming upgrade.
*Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC is the Only licensed copy which O2 XDAII will have, O2 will not support Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition in XDAII.
The latest rom upgrade for O2 XDAII, you could login at www.myxda.com with your username & password & click on 'Get the latest software for your device.'
In any case where the XDAII was upgraded to other 'rom' versions. The warranty of the phone will be void.
All future release of new models of O2 phones' details will be made available for viewing on the main page of www.myxda.com , please kindly refer to it for future updates. Thank you.
Warmest Regards,
Willy Ho (Mr)

Even this would be what I excepted, I still feel a bit sad about what O2 decided to do. Hopefully they will change their mind later!
I think it's kinda template answer for anyone who asks for 2K3SE.
Let's wait and see i guess, Asia Pacific normally don't have more details then the one elsewhere.
I agree that this is just a "standard" answer from O2. However, it may be true as well. As I said, hopefully they will change their mind later. By the way, I spoke to imate customer service and they said that the WM2003 SE upgrade should be avaliable by the end of the year. Hopefully they will do it coz upgrading from XDA II to XDA IIi/s....to me it doesn't worth to do it.
Tekguru has alreday hinted strongly that WM2003SE will indeed be released for current owners. An updated ROM is also around the corner.
Even by o2 standards we're starting to get a bit behind...
does anyone have any inside goss on when the 2i update is due, and what's on it. I'm getting tired of lockups, crap looking UI's and the inability to launch GPRS once I connect it to my car cradle / charger. I've heard rumours of 2005 inclusion, is this remotely plausible? My experience of o2 would suggest otherwise.
I'd ring or email o2 or their staff accounts guys, but I think the average fruitfly knows more than they do. Besides, I like my hair and I would hate to see it all pulled out on the floor...who'd clean it up?

I agree fully. I purchased my XDAIIi on the promise from O2 that na update was to be release in Spring. This never came and I'm getting so fed up with O2 suddenly becoming very quiet about any upgrade at all, that I'm contacting the Office of Fair Trade to get my contract bounced with O2. Last I spoke with someone in O2 they have no immediate plans for any firmware release for the IIi which is completely contradictory to what I've been told previosuly. Come on O2. SORT IT OUT BEFORE YOU START LOSING CUSTOMERS!!
well imate have said that they will not release 2005 for any of their series og HTC devices so unless tmobile or o2 have a different openion then i dont see it happning
Sean I'm not so sure that the info you got from o2 was accurate...afterall when I tried to ring up a day before (yes a DAY) the 2i was released, I was told by THREE separate individuals on separate occasions that the 2i didn't exist!!
We'll keep hanging in there, but I agree it's getting pathetic now.

Update
I work for O2 and have managed to find out that the rom update for the XDAIIi has been scheduled for September 2005
at that time it better be wm2k5!!!!
If that's true, you've gotta love the mentality...
New phone = Feb 2005...rumoured update for Spring. Spring comes, nothing. Summer comes, nothing. No update from any o2 source, official or otherwise. Then, suddenly it's gone to September. Also the time the Universal is rumoured to be out.
If it's Sept, then as Zoheer says, it had better be 2005!!

I don't supose you could find out when the xdaIIs update is due as well?
Thanks Frogspit, If that's the case I can be patient until then. The most inuriating thing is getting no information at all from O2 or even denials of any update at all. It's like being stuck on a London Underground train thats not got going anywhere and the driver doesn't give any information. It really [email protected]@es people off and drives them away from their service.
The official reply given by the o2 second line team (data support) is that its "highly unlikely" that o2 will offer rom upgrades to wm5 for existing devices.

I find that a bit hard to believe. If you work for o2 then at what level have you got that info? If its at customer service level then someone is probably just playing guessing games.

Update
This information has been obtained from one of the members of the blackberry/tech support teams (non customer facing) within O2, I have been told as well as the O2 active update there is going to be a full rom update in or around the same time. this rom update will be the similar as the one that is currently available for the XDAII.
Included with the new rom update will be blackberry support for the XDAIIi aswell for those of you who are interested.
I have requested to be part of the beta test will post again near the time
This may coincide with this -
o2 music player
Xda II - Coming Soon
Get the latest sounds on your Xda II by downloading the O2 Music Player.
http://music.o2.co.uk/players.html
They may add the music player into the o2 active software which would require a ROM upgrade.

jdee246 shame on you for doubting me!!! rom update is now available from www.o2.co.uk/xda FULL SMUG MODE NOW
Don't see what you've got to be smug about. You got the date wrong and you were wrong about blackberry being in the rom.
Smug yes very
Yes got date wrong but they managed to launch early than anticipated so not totally wrong!!! and you were the main doubter as for the blackberry support they withdrew it due to technical issues what do you want 'the moon on a stick!!!!'
i dont think he / we want the 'moon on a stick' i think he / we want o2 to stop making promises which they clearly cant deliver.
i too upgraded from an xda2 to a 2i on the promise of blackberry support. its amazing that a company of o2's size and with the amount of money they make that they cant develope, test and release in 5 plus months something they only until recently kept saying would be released "soon"
total shambles to be honest
steve
There won't be a release for wm2005 on XDA IIi so start saving your money for the HTC Universal. Don't ask me how I got this info, but it is the fact! Too bad for all of us Xda IIi owners. Especially because I paid 1200 us when they first came out. Ouch!

You announce to all on this board that the release will include blackberry, and when it doesn't we're accused of wanting 'the moon on a stick'. That's very arrogant. You bloody announced it!
To be fair to O2, this is RIM software, and from what I'm hearing its RIM thats failing to come up with working software. But I do get annoyed when arrogant dickheads come onto this board, promise things that turn out to be complete rubbish and then blame us for it.
Frogspit, if I'd gone out and bought an xda IIi on the back of what you announced, because I want blackberry, now I really would be pissed off, and I'd be doing a lot more than just sounding off on this board.
I Want to use KSE truefax on my xdaII but the web site says I need ROM 1.72.01 (Radio-version 1.17).
Mine is ROM 1.66.00 radio 1.08.00.
Im worried that if anything goes wrong with updating it I will end up with a worthless piece of plastic.
Is updating the rom safe?
Fax software
I had a similiar problem on my T-mobile MDA PRO.
KSE does not support the modem in the device yet, or WM 5.
Gave up trying to send, tried a few other trial versions of various s/w no joy.
Going to sell my MDA PRO after 6 weeks I find I can not do that much with it and magician /compact. Hope to raise 450 quid.
It is a large 3G brick crying out for applications and purpose.
Lucky for me T-mobile gave me MDA PRO free of charge to settle a dispute where they had made a big mistake.
In January I was excited about comming new official AKU 3.3 and then nothing happen (officially AKU 3.3.1 is not formal update as is not posted on HTC website, thou 1.35 SA also in not official upgrade but found in new HTC TyTN's), now they are telling us about WM6 upgrade path - well I think that right now they might be right. Why?
3.3 release was affected by Vista release, and as most of you know Vista is not best platform to launch upgrade for our device. What to do? Company play stupid and they test release first OS then current 2.11 SA via people who are contributing in various internet forums. Of course only XP ready, meanwhile they tried to workaround Vista installing, but as usual with MS it is not ready for major support at begining (just got Vista Resource Kit - almost 3 months after release).
So what they can do for angry customers? Give them a bone - official WM6. Of cource MS might give them it for discounted price for suffering with Vista, but it also is in MS plans to do it. Boost sales of Office 2007 and Exchange 2007. That is why I do belive that now upgrade will come at last.
What do you think about this?
BTW. I wan't change TyTN until new device with HSUPA and UMTS 900 and UMTS 2100/1700 will be in sales. I would like also GSM 400/450 but probably it want happen.

You're right. M$ is providing WM6 free to the OEMs/ODMs because they want more sales of their core products -- Vista, Office 2007 and Exchange 2007. The OEM/ODM can pass on that incentive to the customer if they wish.
I am not saying that HTC won't come to their senses and actually do this (they seem to be saying that they will), but given their track record, I'm not holding my breath waiting for them to do it. The sad state of affairs is that they don't care much for the TyTN et al, they are already working on the next gen (Kaiser) which will be the source of revenue for them this year. They want you to upgrade to Kaiser and toss your Hermes. Too bad for people that bought Hermes devices from a service provider on a three year contract.
And really, who cares that HTC will be issuing an "official" WM6 upgrade sometime this year -- we already have excellent fully working WM6 ROMs on our devices thanks to JJ, walshieau, CUSTEL, LVSW, and others. As far as I am concerned, they burnt their bridges with me.

I was waiting for the Kaiser simply for WM6. For me my Magician did pretty much all I wanted. But then I relented and got a Hermes and upgraded the ROM instead!
@olipro - well this is part where technology take place
HSUPA - High Speed Upload Packet Access - gives you upload speed up to 2.1 Mbps. Together with HSDPA gives HSPA - 3.75G network.
UMTS 900 - 3G in 900 MHz. There are talks right now in France that some operators want to move from GSM technology in 900 MHz to UMTS in same spectrum. It gives no state licensing fees (they have 900 MHz spectrum to convert) and coverate UMTS at 900 MHz gives bigger coverage area per network tower.
UMTS 2100/1700 is US T-Mobile version of UMTS. It differs from worldwide that download is in 2100 MHz spectrum (same everywhere) but upload utilizes 1700 MHz spectrum (in worldwide wersion 1900 MHz which in US is in use by T-Mobile GSM service and Cingular GSM/UMTS service).
GSM 400/450/480 is GSM service in 400-500 MHz band right now new spectrum from GSM to be used in less populated areas. Currently in use i.e. in Tanzania, but there is need for this. I read report that AUS operators press on this to cover interior part of Australia.
My goal is to have most versitle device I can have. I do not know where I will work tomorrow so I have to be ready - Windows Mobile is great platfrom but I need powerfull hardware for it.
@johnburn - well let me tell you that i was thinking about it but...
a) HTC gave written statement - if it was boogus thay would say that it is not true, so we may assume that it is true. Good lawer can win big money for not holding to companys word - especally when it is written.
b) why I like official version then modified? Because I will not lose warranty, using custom made OS I may. Of course after warranty period - what the hell but untill then only official versions.
c) Kaiser - well I do not think that it will kill Hermes - geographical diversiffication. HTC will sale Kaiser in Western Europe / US / Japan / AUS but there are many places where HTC will still could sale TyTN with profit - Eastern Europe / South America / etc.
@The_Hawk - good for you, if you are waiting for new version/model you will never buy anything

Can a lawyer (good, bad or otherwise) actually prove the letter came from HTC? Notice that it came from an Italian website. It is not on HTC's web sites, at least, I can't find it there.
I have no doubt that HTC will eventually issue WM6 upgrades to some or all of its current devices and likely for free -- they'd be foolish if they didn't, seeing as everyone else is. I'd be astonished if it actually happened at the end of April (which year, they didn't say?) Their track record isn't very good in this regard (OK, its atrocious!). If this is true, then the only thing I can think of is that they have finally been beaten by the ROM cookers on this site and are doing this to attempt to regain control.
Your other points are valid, except that the warranty point is moot for people like myself that bought an HTC-branded TyTN without a warranty (because we went through third parties that weren't authorized to sell HTC product to end users).

Well it has all the information needed from corporate paper - except date. I think that this is internal document prepared for later use. Date: Xx April, 2007 is the key. We have got many connection here with HTC - may somebody ask for authenticity?

Well you can try everything, I do have warranty.
I couldn't follow the whole thread, but I guess that one reason WM6 will be released for the TyTN is the fact that many Mobile Operators are selling it with their own brand. Its "mini-notebook" design made it really perfect for office customers of service providers.
On the other hand, in example, HTC Trinity/P3600 which was only sold with HTC brand seems to be unsupported in the WM6 switch.
It's something more complex than a bone...
Is marketing strategy.
POINT A
WM6 is JUST a name, nice graphic and bug fixed enhanced DLLs, is a simple WM5.2 (marketing, to boost WM6 install)
WM6 NEEDS activesync 4.5 and AS4.5 doesn't work with office 2000, ME, NT, 98, and generally speaking is something LESS than 4.x releases (marketing, to improve office 2007 sales, 80% of users doesn't need nothing more than office 2000)
LESSON LEARNED
Is hard to say now WHY I HAVE TO USE VISTA lack of drivers, security improved? may be IMHO complexity is the only thing improved!
more WM6=more AS4.5= more office 2007= VISTA sales
POINT B
selling connected services and ....Windows update and live to be connected LIVE is the next strategy, VISTA could be will be the last OS fully developed from MS, It was really hard do deliver.
LESSON LEARNED
If your busines is selling the SAME SOFTWARE for years someday you discover you landed in a place were the market ends.
You can't improve much more... then people stops buying it!
POINT C
business market. Why Exchange ? to boost mobile integration .But I have Exchange 2003 already... HTML email, available ONLY with exchange server, and a lot of cooperation and security features availabe ONLY on 2007.
LESSON LEARNED
phone isn't a voice device anymore. Voice is expensive in terms of time/results. Mobile Data Communication and services are the next 10 years business, but from MS point of view is a business for partners (operators, other), thay aren't involved.
PHONE AND WM IN MS ARE LIKE MEN FOR SOME LADIES: THEY AREN'T THE FINAL PURPOSE, THEY ARE ONLY INSTRUMENTS TO HAVE SOMETHING (WIFE, MOTHER, FAMILY, MONEY/VISTA, OFFICE,EXCHANGE, LIVE SERVICES ) (sorry ladies, nothing personal, same example could be done for men)
WM6 WILL BE FOR FREE FOR EVERYONE I guess! as marriage: free and promishing at the beginning, hidden costs are discoved later
UPDATE:
I discovered how STUPID a Marketing Manager could be.
WM6 Standard has only word/excel editing AND NOT creating.
The 'Save As' dialogue in the Compact Framework is not implemented in Smartphone!!!! (As Paul from MODACO discovered http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=252990)
A little utility and NEW Word and Excel documents are available.
While E. Coyote is in Microsoft, director of Windows Mobile BU?
I had to do a full reset because of unstability, but when I fired up O2 Connect to get O2 Plus, it wasn't there! Does anybody have a copy, or can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong here? Last time I set up the phone it was there without any hesitation. I'm dependant on that thing!

hmmm... I hear that MWG group is taking over O2 Asia and that all downloads and support has been moved to mwg website. This might explain it:
Code:
It has been announced on 1st of November 2007 with immediate effect, Mobile and Wireless Group (MWG) will be taking over O2 Asia's assets in an agreement between MWG and Telefónica O2.
MWG is a company established by the current management team of O2 Asia to take on O2's existing PDA/Smartphone business in Asia and to continue to serve this high-growth sector.
To be kept up to date on the latest software applications, ROM upgrades and user tips for your current O2 device, please click here to be a part of MWG Connect on or before 15 Jan 2008. This will also ensure you are the first to hear about MWG's products, services and special offers.
Profiles of customers who have yet to opt in to MWG Connect will continue to be stored in O2's databases and may be dealt with in accordance with O2's data policy.
MWG will be responsible for warranty and after-sales support for all O2 Xda devices in the region. For up to date information on our service, please check support page before visiting the service centers.
We thank you for your continued support.
Yours truly,
O2 Asia
Thanks, but I don't think so, I have been there. It doesn't mention O2 Plus at all, only the totally useless SMS Plus, Media Plus and a few other silly things. Also I tried to download with the O2 Connect, and it had all those other programs in there, but not the O2 plus. And I'm also missing O2 Menu, which I have also been using since I got the Atom Life. Fishy stuff...
nice title W..T...F LOL hehehe
What's even nicer is that I finally found it. It's hidden within O2 Themes in the auto installer! Silly place to put it, but at least I found it. So now I have the % battery strength on the Today screen, and I can close programs totally with the long tap.
O2 plus is unstable
I missed ik as much after re set whan i did not find on O2 connect. then MGM people sent to me and moment i install it works fine but once one sets the current date it hangs and has to be hard reset and the same spiral is repeated...i stii miss % battery and close program menu but have come to live without.
