Functionality Wish List - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

Thanks to xda-developers, Jeff's kitchen, T-Mobile's ridiculous data rate plans, and nPOP, my XDA is nearly approaching perfect status where it does everything I want almost exactly perfectly. Not sure who's responsible for the mic mute button in the phone interface, but that was a huge deal for me too.
So, what's left? Not much! Here's some annoyances though:
1. I wish you could copy phone numbers in some places. In SIM Manager or in the Phone call log, you cannot copy a phone number for pasting into an existing contact. You can create a new contact, but you can't just copy a phone number onto the clipboard.
2. The XDA is the only phone I've ever seen from any manufacturer in any country where the battery level is not part of the interface. Lots of shareware options available, but can't understand why this isn't part of the interface.
3. Would like to be able to record voice notes more easily. It's one button press on an iPaq, requires several pen clicks on the XDA.

Telephone recorded

Does anybody know of a program for the xda that will record the phone conversation. It would be much easy to record all or part of the conversation instrad of taking notes.
Thanks
Nothing needed but the XDA it's self!
Guess waht? The XDA already does that! While you are talking open notes then hit the recorder icon and then the record button and there you have it conversation now being recorded. I use this quite often when consulting or troubleshooting with a client. Make sure to know the law on this matter. Here in the states you must notify the other party they are being recorded! :? Also make sure you have a large SD card and have settings in notes app default to SD. Keeping long conversations on your SD card will soon lead to a conversation not getting recorded due to lack of mem. So shuttle them on to a portable hard disk or desktop hard drive for archiving.
Fantastic... thanks for that. Is there anyway to make it automatic as when i am in the car (its on speaker) its hard do all of that.
Again thanks
You might want to alter the general settings, for the recorder, and choose a lower bitrate and quality. Recording phone conv in stereo and high bit rate will take up space very quickly!
as far as I know there is no way to have a sort of profile that you would in this case call speaker phone. There is a profile app out there. The only thing I know how to do is set speaker phone to default. meaning everytime you answer the phone it is in speaker phone mode. you have to then take it out of speaker phone mde if you do not wish to have your conversation public. I find it easy enough to just hold down the little green phone key for a few seconds activating the speaker phone when ever I need that function. Sorry this is an awsome device but cant do everything  There are car kits you can buy that may add or activate this automatic once put in the car cradle. Sorry it's not cut and dry :?
Thanks again for the comments and for thinking about this problem for me. In short i need to have a setting so that once checked all my calls are recorded automatically. That means when i first get into the van i just check the phone record button and all i have to do is then answer the calls and they are auto recorded.
Again thanks
Hmmm, and how about a program that sits quietly in the background, records all calls, gpg-encrypts them with a supplied public key and at night uses GPRS to post them to alt.anonymous.messages ?
We live in interesting times.
Remind me to never call you
There are some macro apps online you can try that might be smart enough to run this app, start record, and end record once a call is activated and terminated. Do a Google search for pocket pc+macro? Or just hit the software sales vendors sites. What you really need is probably to pay someone to write such a program, and consult a Lawyer regarding the legalities of such an app, not to mention a .wav file that automatically plays to the caller before you start talking, letting them know they are being recorded. Whew! Anything else  I think the XDA can also be used as a marital aid while in vibrate mode:shock: and with some servos, a designated connection, and some Souder you could probably also dial into your home network push 1 to start the coffee maker, 2 to preheat the oven, and 3 to run the bath  No harm intended just expanding your idea here
Regarding your comment XDA-dev* I live in the US and our little Homeland Security Trio is and has probably already been doing this  8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) the black shades are watching you
I know I'm going to hit my head for asking , but why do you need to record all your calls "In The Van"  Hmmm on second thought don't post that after all:mrgreen:
Cheers,
E.
Thanks every for this. I did not want to open a can of ethical worms or think and double think. I am a wine salesman and get order / addresses etc over the phone and its a real pain in the xxx to pull over jot everything down. At the moment i am using a voice recorder where i basically repeat everything into but if the xda could do it all ....
Anyway thanks for the interest and the ideas
Well in fact, you can use any programme that can record, I used something myself, but it was long ago and can't remember the name... it was capable of recording to mp3 directly
Without the use of macros, you will have to manually click the record icon in notes or set a button to begin recording once hit while you are in a call.
Zviratko is referring to the mp3 record program which I can't remember the name either   but I'll post when I find it. This is a good program since MP3's are smaller in size and will use less disk space.
It was some VERY old programme for old WinCE or Pocket PC, for making voice notes...
The recorder program does not sound too bad or the macros... where would i get them from i am not a technical person. Or as somebody point out i could pay to get it done if it was not too much, who could do that. As for the recorder idea my current one (seperate from the xda) is on when i am in the van and is activated only it there is noice. All that means is that i drive around with the radio, another pain but ........
Again thanks and looking forward to your answers.

Actually there were only 5 states that required this when I last researched it. In most states as long as one party consents (this can be you), then it is legal. IE, it's only illegal to record someone else's conversations.
Carlos that good to know
Vino do a google search for "Pocket PC software macro(s)" and try starting there.
I was thinking about it and a temp solution until some magic software comes along set your XDA to auto answer in a certian number of rings under the Settings, Phone, More tab.
Then set one of your hardware buttons to record once pressed, under Settings, Buttons.
Now you only have to push "one" button to record your converstions . The program is caled mNote or NoteM. Check the online software vendors for that or just under their search option put mp3 recorder, or just mp3. It will come up.
That is a fantastic solution .... Thanks
I found a program on the xda hotvoice.exe does anybody know what it does and how can you execute it.
Thanks
What I have done is maped one of the botton's the record funtion. Then I just press and hold the button while I want to record.
To get detailed, I usually just repet when the person has said, they think I'm writing it down little do they know I'm recording my voice.
I then sink to my PC later, and create a task, note, email or update an address. delete the note and then resink.
my two cents.... thinks like this is where the true value of an intigrated device is!

General and 6.1 Upgrade Tips from a Titan Noob. :3

This used to be a post about things that were broken, I have solved the majority of them. Keep these tips in mind when upgrading. :
Phone Programming
Make absolutely sure you backup your MSID from ##778# before performing any Radio flashes.
Your MSID should not be the same as your MDN on a Sprint device.
Sprint prints your ESN and MDN on their reciepts.
Your MDN is your Phone Number. (It took me a while to figure this one out.)
If you lose your MDN, your voicemail will still work, just call your phone from your phone. The MDN entry is at a different location than ##778# and does
not require an unlock code to edit. A Sprint rep gave me the number, but I forgot it.. It was something along the lines of ##0264788#? If someone knows it, feel free to post it and I'll try to edit it in.
Backup Issues
E-MAIL BACKUPS from WM6.0 will disable your TEXT MESSAGING if you restore them on to WM6.1; Keep your emails backed up via some other method.
SOFTWARE
S2U2 May be problematic with WM6.1, All tests so far have led to a black screen. It is supposedly repairable by using DirectDraw, Another alternative is to use the locker in PointUI.
TouchFlo is not an incredible advancement in the way we use PDAs, it is a problematic finger gesture system. You're better off binding some sort of launcher to your now unused voice calling key. There are also shell extensions which allow you to add secondary actions for holding down a hard key.
Avoid using:
HTC Audio Booster - Doesn't Work
HTC Equalizer - Doesn't Work
(SRS WoW does seem to work.)
HTC Plus - Doesn't Uninstall if you hate it, HTC Home is better.
HTC Quick Launcher - Functionality included in HTC Home
HTC Audio Manager Today - Function in HTC Home
If you have a spare buck, or a keen sense of evading the law, SPB's application suite is a pretty dandy thing to have. I'm an avid promoter of open source software, but Diary, Home, and Plus offer a lot of extra usability.
PointUI is freaking sweet, no question, but the application navigation and task management aren't very user friendly. Hopefully the PointUI team continues adding to their great app. There seem to be some random half-crashes of the app when using the replacement taskbar.
Some SPB Extensions are causing lockups. Could not pin it down, but it was something in Plus! or Phone Suite
BATTERY LIFE
AGILE MESSENGER uses 33% of your processor at ALL TIMES on WM 6.1, If you are having battery issues, try switching to something a little more lightweight. Fring is a pretty lightweight app, and it supports Skype and GoogleTalk voice calling, too. This alone should save you having to purchase an extended battery.
Enabling your GPS Chipset doubles your Idle power consumption.
There are several Extended Battery models you can use with your Titan, two of them which portrude from the enclosure. In general messaging and internet use I find that the regular battery is down to about 40% in my day, about two hours of which I can actively use the device, not including talk time or music listening. I usually take about 10 non-flash panoramas or photos a day from boredom.
The extended battery with the rounded portrusion makes holding the device more comfortable, however, in landscape mode, I often feel myself rubbing over the camera lense for better grip. It also makes it impossible to fit in the included holster, and incompatible with any protective shells, My battery life with Agile Messenger running (which remember eats more battery power than GPS) was at about 50% on the end of each day, and I used the device for about a 50 minute extra period due to bus travel and bus stop boredom.
The largest extended battery will probably allow even the most bored of employees keep entertained, but this battery's casing nearly doubles the size of the phone, costs as much as the phone with a service agreement, and it's rough edges look like they would make the phone the most uncomfortable device to use for anything. Try not to grab this one up for only a 400mah boost, with too much extra portrusion to keep it in the same pocket as your wallet.
if your voicemail isnt working I'd guess that your MDN number is wrong, your MSID and MDN number should both be your phone number.

Not always, the msid seems to be the first number they give you, but if your like me, the mdn well be the number that you transfered from your "old" contract
In regards to GPS make sure it's enabled. Go to Settings > Phone > Services > Location Settings and make sure it's set to Location ON (or whatever is not 911 ONLY).
As far as MSID/MDN... MDN is always your current number. MSID can vary.. call your carrier for the MSID. You might just want to tell them you did a hard reset and now your phone isn't working. They will walk you through EPST.
Alright, I'll try calling them for the reprogramming and stuff, hopefully they don't get all crazy on me. :3

Two things:
One, did you try playing with the directdraw in s2u2? I know when it's on (in wm6) it would lead to a blackscreen for me.
Two, Awesome job man, Being a "titan noob" and figuring **** out yourself is what it's all about. This write up just might help other "noobs" on their way to becoming more experienced users.
Just to let people know
DTMFVibrate does work on WM6.1.
You can back up your contacts, calendars, tasks, notes on Outlook
For those who do not have Outlook I will enclose some apps that help with back ups ( I am not the creator of these apps but they do work )

How did you get DTMF Vibrate working? Is there some newer or different version that I don't know of?

Your opinion requested

Hi All,
I'm seeking the opinion of current Rose owners.
The north american version of the Rose is about to be released in Canada (labelled as HTC S743) It looks to be identical in all respects to the S740 except that the radio is adjusted for north american 3G frequencies.
I'm currently using the S730 and I used to have a VOX until my wife decided that she liked it. When I look at the specs for the S743 and the reviews online, my initial reaction is that I MUST have one. But before I go out and spend that kind of money, my questions for you Rose owners are:
Do you find it more responsive than its predecessors? (Wings, Vox)
Does it fit comfortably in your pocket or would you recommend getting a belt-case?
How is the battery life given moderate use? (~1 hour talking each day, bluetooth always on, Directpush mail enabled during working hours)
If you could change one thing about your Rose, what would it be?
I appreciate any opinions you have to offer.
Thanks,
Canuk

Not sure if i am a good reference, since i am absolutely in love with this device. am still trying to answer your questions:
More responsive? absolutely so. owned a vox before that, and these two devices are worlds apart. both processor power and ram wise (ran out of ram on the vox on several occasions resulting in program crashes when simultaniously running nav software and pocket player for example. never happened with the rose so far, and doubt it ever will. not even gonna start talking about lockups on the vox because of the rather feeble processor.)
Will it fit a pocket? depends on your pocket i suppose. fits fine in mine (i do not wear baggy pants. its not really that large anyways. compared to the vox: same depth, slimmer, but a bit longer.)
battery life moderate use? mine lasts for about 24 hours. not sure if that could be a reference point tho: fairly heavy browsing, 3g and bluetooth and ActiveSync push on 24/7, tons of progs running in the background, a2dp stream for 2-3 hours, sometimes some wifi. itll definately last from morning till sometime around midnight.
if i could change one thing? acquiring my baby ripped quite a big hole into my pocket back then...
hope that helps,
.-ombre-.
Released in Canada by whom, and where???
I just got one last week. If you like the Vox & Wings then you'll absolutely love the Rose.
This phone is very responsive. The typical annoyance of HTC smartpones like: unresponsive keypad, d-pad that occasionally missed when action key is pressed are gone. The addition of GPS is a big welcome.
Regarding the size, It's a bit longer but narrower, so it felt good on the palm and can be easily slipped into the pocket. I use a landyard and carry it naked.
Regarding battery life: I push my email and let my messanger on all day and the battery can last for the whole day. So the battery is good.
If I could change one thing: I wish it has video call ability like the wings.
Thanks for your feedback. I really appreciate it and you have helped me make my decision.
Ombre - I share your pain on the cash outlay! Fortunately this would qualify as a legitimate business expense for me so I don't have to shoulder the entire $$ burden myself.
Kardboard - It was supposed to be released on Expansys this Monday, but I've just checked the site and it seems we are going to have to wait for a couple more weeks.
Thanks again!

I'm using HTC S740 for two months now. It is polish language version(I'm from Poland) and there are few things a bit irritating.
First of all, the WM6.1 apps, like Comm Manager, IE, QuickGPS and such, can't be closed other way, than by using task manager. There is an option in Comm Manager labelled "Close" but it doesn't work.
Office, which was installed by HTC, is useless: I can't copy text from any text files. Yesterday I wrote long letter to my friend using Office, I wanted to send it via MMS. I couldn't copy the text, and when I sent her the whole file as attachment to MMS, she got some squares instead of letters.
IE and Opera are terribly slow. Opera is also terribly unstable. I can't login to some sites because even if I select the "log in" button, I can't "click" it. Odd.
CHome Configurator can't edit most of panels on my screen. I can't either add new panels.
And there is also battery cover, which is not holding to the phne well enough, but I think it's only in my phone. Besides, the plastic lens protector is often hard to clean-up and is distorting the photos. It should be made of glass...
And it would be nice to have push-to-talk available as it is rather software-made. The commercial software for PTT can't interface with standard protocol used by my GSM operator, because it uses its own standards and can work only with other phones with proper software installed. And because my friends are using Nokias with native PTT support, I can't communicate with them via PTT...

Maybe you're using Opera 9.5 for the PPC and not the SP one (there's no opera 9.5 for the SP).
Just use Iris Browser, latest versions are very good.

This program is great. Thank you.
And yes, I used wrong version of Opera. But for now I'll use Iris...
There are also two programs I wish to recommend for any Rose user:
Mobipocket Reader - for ebooks;
Palringo - for IM.
I used Mobipocket Reader before with Nokia E50(Symbian s60v3) and I must tell you: it's very good piece of freeware.
On the other hand Palringo has limited functionality. It can connect with many IM protocols(unfortunately not with Gadu-Gadu), but it has some functions I like: it can send voice messages and photos to anyone on IM contact list and it works well with Jabber transports. I tried few Jabber clients, but they didn't worked well enough...

I must say, also for me is it a nuisance (and incomprehensible) that you can't select text in Word Mobile to copy/cut/paste it.
Actually it makes Word Mobile a useless app.
So I tried Smarttoolkit, but I have a few major problems when running Smarttoolkit (S740 often slows down / freezes, programs folder is empty) and I can't find the edit function.
So, while it seems to have some nice tools, is seems an unfinished product and the option I installed it for doesn't seem to work (or maybe I'm a bit stupid).
Anyone have another solution to select text in Word Mobile ?

I'm fresh from a nokia e61, here's my take after about a week's worth of use:
Responsiveness is as fast as most smartphones on the market today. Not exactly dumbphone-snappy, but not nearly slow enough to get in your way. The only thing that might bug you is the one-second delay you get when you slide the thing open and shut on anything except the home screen; personally, I didn't mind it that much.
Does it fit comfortably in your pocket or would you recommend getting a belt-case?

Funny you should ask that…when I first cracked the box open, it had a sticker on the screen that said, I quote, "remove phone from pants pocket before sitting down." Found it kinda ironic, as it's not nearly hefty or bulky enough to actually warrant such a label. To be fair, it's rather hefty compared to most phones, and in fact about as thick as a whiteboard marker. I've found the design hides its bulk quite well (the faceted back cover in fact makes it look slimmer than it is).
Battery life was disappointing, frankly, but as a disclaimer, my previous phone had a ridiculously long-lasting battery for a smartphone. I'm able to pull about a day's worth of usage with auto-checking email every 5 minutes, about 8 texts in and out, 3G on, and light wifi browsing.
Change? I only wish there was some kind of quick-launch panel on the main menu that would let me scroll through and fire up any application I want. Also, kinda ties into the previous point, but a more efficient task-switcher would be welcome. I've noticed the home button doesn't do much else aside from…well…take you home. It would be nice if they mapped a long press of that button to some kind of juiced up task manager.
Another thing that bugs me is the inconsistent function of the "back" button. In some apps it deletes, in other times (like menu navigation) it takes you to the previously viewed menu/app, some other times it serves as a back button from within an application.
As for fortes, I think the best feature would be HTC's homescreen GUI overlay. It's extremely functional and logical, listing clock, calendar, missed calls and alerts, messaging, mail, etc, etc. I've found it to be so functional, in fact, that I hardly ever dive into the (admittedly rather unsightly) underlying WinMo menus. For most information you might need at-a-glance from your mobile, the homescreen certainly delivers.
Just my take. Hope it helps you, or if not, some other forum-lurker or prospective buyer.

Hi ninethreetwo,
Thanks for the input. I definitely prefer to carry the phone in my pocket. I've had some larger phones in the past that were too big for pockets (Blue Angel, Harrier, Palm 700wx) and I just couldn't find a convenient place to put the belt case. I was always catching in on things or crushing it when I got in to the car. One of the reasons for buying a Vox was the compact and "pocket friendly" form factor.

I can relate. My one complaint about many of the smartphone interfaces is that it oftentimes takes too many clicks to get what I want. On the Wings I modificed the HTC interface slightly to include the recent apps gui (like in the default interface) which helped tremendously.
Thanks again for your feedback! I appreciate the time that you and the other contributers to this thread have taken to provide such considered and detailed responses.

You can select text in Word Mobile. As Master Yoda would say: "use the [shift] key, Luke". Simply open file, select EDIT, place cursor where you want to start your selection, hold down [shift] and scroll down with D-Pad.
Next, for SmartToolkit work you must install RC8 version. Also in Control Panel>General set "On Homescreen" to be "SmartToolkit Taskbar", and in Control Panel > Hotkeys set [Clipboard] to be your D-Pad button. This way you will be able to use your standard options on Homescreen made by HTC and in the same time use SmartToolkit. And in Control Panel > Gadgets you can create easy-accessed shortcuts and Pop-up Launcher lists with your programs, it's very useful.
It looks like this:

You can use CHome Configurator (grab the CAB from the Excalibur board) to add shorcuts to favorite applications at the home panels (See attached screenshot). It's very easy, here are the steps:
1. Open CHome Configurator
2. Show 'CLinks' and hilight it and press action to customize
3. Then Go to 'Menu/Page/New'
4. Then in the new page, click 'Menu\Template\Application Launcher'
5. Select the application that you want, set the name & icon
6. Repeat the procedure for as many shortcut as you like

Other alternative is to use quick launcher application like xBar, RightMenu, SmartToolKit or just use a different theme which use rjshorcut plugins. The best place to get S740 themes is here:

Use this free Theme Changer to compliment the themes that you download:

To remapped the home key, you can use software like AEButtonPlus or Hotbutton Plus
Cheers!
Thenext1 and Urgon, thank you for your replies.
I downloaded Vito CopyPaste version 1.3 and installed it.
It does work (e.g. in Mail), however for some reason doesn't in Word Mobile.
Very disappointing
The selection method of shift+D-pad works, so at last I can edit text afterwards.
However copy/cut/paste with ctrl+C/X/V doesn't work in Word Mobile.
This (regular) option however works in other apps (e.g. Mail, SMS, Contacts).
I also installed SmartToolkit RC08 and changed the settings as suggested.
It certainly works now very well and isn't intrusive for the Home screen with HTC sliding panels. It also (for now) doesn't slow down or freeze (like I experienced with RC09).
But, while I can get copy/cut/paste working in other applications, also this doesn't work in Word Mobile.
Is somehow in Word Mobile the possibility of using copy/cut/paste blocked ?
AVE...
It shall work, certainly works for me. You have to hold down the D-pad button for 0,5 seconds to access clipboard menu. It may be also required to restart your phone in order to make it work.
Below you can see my clipboard menu in Word Mobile.
BTW, the whole Office package is useless, because you can't create new documents.

I agree, especially Word mobile is completely useless, even for opening documents created on a PC.
Excel sort-of works when opening documents.
Powerpoint instead is near-perfect.
Well, I tried copy/paste again with SmartToolkit in Word Mobile and now it worked. Must have done something wrong before.
That Word Mobile is a very crippled text editor is certainly true.
But sometimes you really need a text-editor and beggars can't be choosers.
On my reliable iPAQ hx4700 I use Textmaker, almost as powerfull as the Windows version, which is one of the best alternatives for MS Word. The same is true for Planmaker (PPC an Windows versions) as alternative for Excel.
The problem of not being able to create a new document or worksheet in WinMo 6 Standard can be solved easily bij copying an empty .doc and an empty.xls file from your PC to your Smartphone. Use these files and save them as another file afer editing (so you keep the empty files unchanged)
A more elegant solution is the free donew (I believe I saw this tip in one of the threads in this Rose forum, so credits where they are due): it creates 2 extra links in "Office Mobile" to an empty Word and empty Excel file.

I only had a few moments with Vox, but I would say that difference is quite noticable. Especially RAM is an overkill on Rose.

I always carry it in my pocket without a problem. It isn't the thinniest phone in the world, though.

I would say 1.5 day on average. Mine lasts between 1 to 3 days depending on usage.

Hard to say really, it doesn't miss much. I would like it a little bit thinner.

[Q] Save a number while on call

Hy everyone,
I've tried searching the forums for a solution but no luck..
Is there any way to save a number while having a conversation?
if i select the "keypad" during a call, and write down a number, there isn't a "save to contacts" option or anything similar to that..
i've fiddled around a bit and the only thing remotely similar to what i need is only an option to save a note during the call, but that is absolutely ridiculous, why would i want to save a note and then go and retrieve it.. i just want to save a contact while talking...
I take it that the phone number you want to save to contacts is different to the telephone call you are currently connected to.
Why not, while on a call, press the Home button, then select the Contacts tab, then select New Contact. You can then write the number in the new contact, along with other details.
hey fred_up thanks for the reply!
actually i did thought of that right after i posted the question, but i just think it's sad that we need to perfotm so many actions in order to do such a simple task... one i used to do once without even taking the phone away from my ear... (and no - i'm not complaining about my hd2, i love it despite its little flaws).
A very handy bit of software is called AutoLoudspeaker - if you do a search, you'll find it on this site. As soon as you take the phone away from your ear (ie the screen lights up via the proximity sensors) the phone goes automatically into loudspeaker mode. That'll take one step out of the process.
No doubt some clever clogs will develop some registry edit that means a long press of the Windows button will open up a new contact page.
Yeh i'm aware of that option, and i use it sometimes when at home, doing the coocking or dishes when the GF is out or while playing pc games but it doesnt really meet my needs when i need to remember a nuber for just a second after i hang up..

Now THAT WOULD BE GENIOUSLY AWESOME!
or maybe even a little app, that is called "numbers" for that matter, which can be located on the home tab and when opening it you'll get a numpad and a screen, and would be able to save numbers in a big font, only numbers, nothing else, the numbers will stay on the screen untill you decide to delete them.
unlike the notepad which saves the notes in a file you need to open, and which is not so finger friendly when coming to fast numbering..
food for thought
maybe i'll just forward the idea to a new app request

may be you can put in a quicklink for 'calculator' on home screen..
I have one, but for that matter - you cannot save numbers you type in the calc, they just vanish once the app is closed, and also - i don't like using things for a purpose they were not meant for, it feels a little stupid..
use panaromic calculator, pressing the x only minimises the program

Android user asks questions

I am due for an upgrade later this month. I am an Android user of phones & tablets for more than 3 years so i am very used to the OS with its massive customisations, etc. But i have been noticing in the background that Windows Phone 8 is slowly gaining fans and i would like to know why. I'd like to convince myself. In particular i'm interested with the Lumia 920 and the newer 925/928 model:
1. Does the Lumia have a Bluetooth feature that can connect to any Bluetooth wireless speakers? And can one send files via bluetooth to any bluetooth-enabled Android phone?
2. Does the Lumia have a quick toggle to settings to instantly turn on or off settings such as wifi, Bluetooth, brightness, etc. (much like the notification drop down bar of Android)
3. Is there a customisable equaliser settings to the new Lumias? Surround sound? Bass? Preset EQ settings?
4. Can I set a Playlist, edit a Playlist name and set songs to a Playlist on-the-fly? If no then what app can do that?
5. Can I drag n drop files from my Mac to a Lumia with a need or no need of another software?
6. Can I still access my Google apps & services such as YouTube, Gmail, Maps, Currents, Chrome, etc.?
7. Is there a pinch to zoom feature in zooming objects for taking photos? Is there an option to easily share them via Email, Bluetooth, Twitter, Instagram, Dropbox, etc.? A way to set photos as a phones's lockscreen wallpaper? A way to edit photos and share them? if so which app do i need?
8. Any "swype to type" typing feature? (For faster typing)
9. Any good alternatives music player, video player for the Lumia?
10. Notification Centre - is it true that one can view a notification (from email, Twiiter, Facebook, etc.) on the lock screen? And how do i "access" or see my notification? Do i swype or just click it?
11. Is there a unified & a fully customomisable news app similar to Google Currents?
12. Sideloading apps - is this possible with WP8? Is there an alternative app store other than WP8's?
Android has tons of alternative/3rd-party app stores where one can look, download & install .apk files on almost any device available out there. Is this also possible with WP8?
13. Would the copy & paste capability be possible in almost anywhere ON THE device itself? How do i copy & paste btw?
14. A way to set Google as a default search option?
15. Software updates - found this "1308" update but it would seem there is the newer "1314" update. What's the real deal? Is it true the 1308 update vastly improved the camera's features and the battery life? ('cause i can't see that info on the website) And how often would those "minor" updates be like performance updates, battery life improvements, new features, etc.
16. Any good note-taking app?
17. How does one go back to view last viewed sites on IE10? Is it any way possible to save them on the hard drive of the phone so i can view them again & again?
18. A way or possibility to print wirelessly to a bluetooth wireless wifi printer?
19. Can one create folders (like a folder for Games, News apps, etc.) like in Android?
20. A very good .pdf viewer please?
21. Can i easily edit a Contact's name, phone number, details, etc.?
22. Can i set a Calendar event or note?
23. Is there a way to edit or change the tile icons on the "main" home screen?
24. Does the camera of the Lumias (in particular the 920) is BSI and HDR features?
Again, read of reviews that the camera is good but photos can sometimes be "washed out" and looks blurry when zoomed in.
25. Screenshots - With Android there is a way to take a screenshot of your phone's current screen. IS this possible with WP8? If yes then how?
26. A good alternative to Google Maps where i can check for transport updates and how to get from point A to B or how to find nearby shops or restaurants?
27. How often does Nokia or MS updates their phones?
28. The battery is only 2000mAh which compare to Android or iPhones is very tiny. How long does the phone lasts for Music? Video? Moderate use?
Please advice. Thanks.
1. yes

10. when notification come, is shown short time in top of screen and if you click it, open it... if you dont click, notification closes and shown on lock screen (wallpaper all missed notification with icon and number)
11. is tons of many apps in Market, i dont use it but think no problem to find right one

many of this answers is here
http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/how-to/wp8
I'm not looking for a Nokia Android phone here. Sure some questions i have been asking were"asked" before that is why i had to slightly change as to how i ask a specific question.
So far i like some of the replies in here. Very interesting OS compared to Android or IOS. For me one way to really know if i like a phone is to go to a shop. Which i've done today.
I went to an O2 store and saw the Lumia 920 & the 925. Both headphone jack were closed as i wanted to try out the vaunted Dolby headphones sound enhancement. The sales rep explained that he cannot do something about anything as he seem to suggest the brackets around the phone that covers the headphone jack is to "prevent the phones getting stolen". Jeez. An early turn off so i went to an EE shop instead.
EE had a working Lumia 920 so went to try it out. Camera seems slightly better than my S3 but noticed there were very few settings to dabble. Wasn't very much convinced with the Dolby sound enhancement (GSMArena were right after all); I wasn't sure if the software of the unit i was given was updated but i was using a mid-range 2-month old Sony earphones i must say. Even after changing the EQ to Custom sound was still somehow "flat" and lacking personality. Was able to try send a file from my S3 to the 920 with a bit of ease although it took about a minute which by todays' standards isn't great but isn't bad either.
What i still don't like:
1. Lack of an alternative app store
2. Lack of alternative browser
3. Lack of a really good altenrative music player with my above needs
4. Lack of .mkv and .srt support in video player
5. Slowness in transferring files via bluetooth
6. The need for a software in order to transfer files. Although someone did menttioned i can just copy & paste files and put them in a folder.
7. Uninspiring and seemingly flat audio/music quality when headphones are connected (even with Dolby On)
8. Non-removable & "low capacity" battery
9. Small 4.5" screen
10. Lack of or the inability to print to a wireless printer
11. Inability (?) for the phone to act as a wifi hotspot
12. Lack of swiping action for faster typing on keyboard
13. Inability to set Google as a search option
14. Inability to save a webpage as a .pdf file for future viewing
15. Few camera options & settings
16. No ability to edit a photo within OS/device
17. Inability to create folders tiles (for quick access to apps)
What also bothered me when i was in the EE shop was what the sales rep told me. She said that many people have been returning their Lumia 920s (i.e. rate of Lumias being returned were MANY!) for repair because of various problems such as bad incoming/outgoing call quality, screen issues and rebooting/crashing issues. She also bluntly advised me to get a Galaxy S4 or the HTC One instead.
Doesn't help with building up confidence does it?
Only the AT&T version allows you to tether and have up to 5 devices connected to it. But you have to have the second tier data package. Yes you can print to a wireless printer over WiFi (maybe another AT&T exclusive). It uses windows for godsake. If a PC can do it, this phone can do it. As for camera settings. It's a phone. If you want camera settings, then get a camera.
All app can be made into a tile simply by tapping and holding until the menu pops up to pin to desktop. The the file can be resized and positioned as you want it.
Google as a search option? Just make it your browser homepage. So what if it is just one more click. Has society really become this lazy?
That small screen is IPS and blows away all the other phones out there regardless of size. Also the gorilla glass is near diamond hard. Ok exaggeration but it is much harder than any other display out there.
You must have missed the edit photo option. You can cut, crop, change colors, and all kinds of edit options. Maybe that is another AT&T only feature.
My low capacity battery last 12 hours under full load and recharges in two with the wireless charger. Not sure what you want, but it is a computer in your pocket and you will not get phone life out of the battery.
Saving a webpage as a PDF. an Andy will not do that by default. So just wait for an app to be made. Or hey just bookmark it and view it over wifi.
There are alternative app stores for WP8. you just have to get into the right click. They are not made public since MS would shut them down.
There are three browsers that are free on the app store and six more you can pay for.
Did you even really try this out yourself or just let others opinions sway you like a typical sheeple? You know the site you keep referring to is biased against WP and MS products. So of course they will give this phone a negative review.
I am sorry to sound harsh but you tried one version from one provider. They are different. There are at this moment three types of 920 out there. The AT&T, The Rogers, and the all others. Each have some variations in functions and quality. As well as variations in the OS.
You also don't need software to transfer files. Not sure where you got that from but if the phone is plugged into a PC it behaves just like a USB drive and can be explored by windows explorer and you just drag and drop files just like another hard drive.
Bluetooth for file transfer is old school and slow. The S3 as well as the Lumia has a tap to send feature that when both phones are near each other you just select a file, select tap to send, find the other phone in the list and tap it. The other phone if feature is turned on will acknowledge a waiting file. You confirm it and it transfers over the TTS network between the phones. Faster than BT by the way.
There are several MKV players in the store, but they are not free.
I'm sorry but it just sounds like you are picking the phone apart and trying to convince yourself not to get one. If you are happy with Andy then the Lumia is not for you just to be blunt. Most Lumia users are tired of Andy or iPhone and that is why they switched. You will not get the customization of Andy with this phone. What you will get is a good rugged phone that has an OS that runs it like it should with minimal apps to perform most day to day things. You will get a camera that rivals lower end SLR's in quality even if it does not have all the bells and whistles. Yes there are SLR users here who have compared the pic quality and in some case it was better on this phone. You will get an OS that runs smoothly and fast and again does what it should. I will say it one last time. If you are happy with Andy or iPhone then this phone is not for you. This phone is a first phone, or a phone for those tired of the cookie cutter phones/OS's out there.
I do not think GSMArena is "biased" to WP & MS products. Why would they? Please enlighten me. The reason they have "negative" reviews of the Lumias is because its the truth i suppose. And the truth sometimes hurts isn't it?
And you might also ask yourself: why would the sales person be biased in saying the rate of returns is enormous because of such & such issues? Please enlighten me. Of all shops i went to (O2, EE & Carphone Warehouse) most of them sell (YES) Android phones (as many companies make Android phones...duh!), iPhones AND Windows phone 8 phones.
Again, let me ask (and challenge you)...why would the sales person be biased? I don't think its because they use Android phones most of the times. I simply don't think so. These people are trained to use and be familiar with ALL types of phones. The only reason i could think of is their reputation. Many returns (for repairs or otherwise) will ultimately have a negative effect on them.
I also heard of incompatibility with the EE network. If the phone is 4G-ready/capable it shouldn't be a compatibility issue. Its the issue of the maker of the phone (and OS) itself isn't it? If the phone is not up to what it can do or is capable of doing then i would rather go for a tried and tested and familiar phone & OS that is Android. I'm aware some companies release different versions of their phones depending on the country/market but still that doesn't help at all.
Also, the trouble with these shops is their phones are most of the times not updated so the software & other improvements are not there for you to experience. The headphone jack might be "locked" by the braces holding the phone or the phone isn't charged at all. Its a lose-lose situation.
Look i am not looking for a perfect Nokia Android phone as i will not find one. I know its either Windows Phone 8 or Android OS.
I made myself clear on my previous reply about my experience in the phone shops and the negative things i have known and read.
If i get the Lumia 920 right now on a 24-month contract with EE will they allow me to return the phone simply because "im not happy with it"? I guess we all know the answer to these question. All they care about is getting money from you and that's it.
Doesn't inspire confidence does it?
I know AT&T gives you a 14 day return period even on a 24 month contract. If you go beyond 14 days then they hit you with the phones full price if you break contract. The issue is not the phone, with 4G. 4G from provider to provider is on different frequencies. This phone like all others only supports 4G and LTE on certain frequencies. If your provider does not support those frequencies then there is nothing that you nor Nokia can do. You need to bust your providers balls to support the other frequencies as well. Good luck on that though since they will just tell you to use a phone they provide. If you want the Lumia to function 100% then you have to buy it from a provider who supports it and use their network. Buying it and trying to use it on a network that it was not intended for will result in fail most of the time. Or the very least a lot of flashing and tweaking and still may not be 100%.
I will say it again. If you like Android and are happy with it then stay with it. To me it sounds like you have already decided against this phone anyways. You Are not going to get somebody in a Lumia forum to flat out tell you not to buy it. So if you are looking for somebody to confirm your feelings you won't get it here. The bottom line is that this phone is not for somebody who is happy with their current OS. This phone is a phone for those just starting or those just fed up with the other stuff out there.
Well thank you all for your replies and insights.
If i get a Windows Phone 8 phone right now i feel it is a way backward not forward. I'm familiar with Android OS so i think i'll stick it out with them.
