Question about service plans - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

I currently have t-mobile's family plan (~$70/month, two phones sharing 800 mins, one of which is my xda, no data on this plan). I called t-mobile to see about adding data, and the person I spoke to said I can add 1Mb/month for $2.99 or unlimited at $9.99/month.
How much, on average, would a person use checking e-mail, syncing avantgo, some surfing (checking directions, stuff like that)? 9.99 doesn't sound like much, but when you're already paying >$70 for service, it adds up. I currenlty connect via CDA (?), which is slow, but works.

I am on the TMo Family Plan with 800 minutes and four phones, one of which is my xda, so our situations are very similar.
The plans quoted to you are for T-Zones, which is WAP only. (Yes, some of you will say it works anyway, but TMo started closing the loophole this week.) I am on the Unlimited Internet Plan for $19.99. Prior to it being unlimited, I used the GPRS very little to stay under the 10MB limit, but that was difficult to do. Now that it is unlimited, I use between 85MB and 100MB per month checking e-mails every fifteen minutes and doing some light internet browsing.
I hope that helps.
David

First off, the $10/mo plan is for phones only, not PDA use. It will not work. Tried it, no go. It is limited to WAP.
How much will you use? 1MB is easy to kill if you browse normal sites, but can go a long way with light mail use and browsing only PDA sites. Hard to say what you'd use. I end up using about 8MB most months, even using it with my laptop a bit.
You can always upgrade if you see yourself going over. You'll need the $20 plan for the XDA however.

WAIT, do you guys mean to tell me that I am paying $10 a month for T-Zones for nothing? Can someone please explain!! What is the difference between T-zones and WAP?
I have a siemens sx56. I use GPRS all the time. I thought that it would be free for me since I have the T-zones for 9.99!!

AT&T vs T-MOBILE

Hi:
Up until now, I have been using T-Mobile ever since the XDA came out.
Used a "visorphone" before that. I do NOT use T-Mobile's Internet access (T-zones) ever since I got hit with a $180+ overage charge the first month I used it.
So.
Here is my issue:
Starting a few months ago, I noticed that, even though I do NOT use T-Mobile for any Internet access (I call up my own ISP instead from the XDA), T-Mobile are charging me something like $.50 for every email sent or received from the XDA using my own ISP. I suppose they monitor the traffic or something. When I protested that they shouldn't charge me for anything Internet-related, only the minutes used to call my ISP, they told me basically that they don't give a damn what I think, and that I will continue to be charged $.50 for every email. They show up on my bill as "e-note" to the phone number "500."
I think that's ridiculous and possibly illegal since it doesn't involve their servers or their services at all, but I don't have the energy to deal with their untrained "Wireless Data Group." It would take years to explain this to them. Just getting them on the phone took over 1 hour. This is partly a warning post, that this is what T-Mobile is doing, and we should know about it. So, I am looking into switching to AT&T.
My questions for anyone reading this:
1) anyone else have that billing issue with t-mobile?
2) is at&t any better? do they charge for internet traffic even if you haven't signed up for their services?
3) i don't think i have simlock issues, the unlock util from this site says that it's already unlocked. rom is 4.00.21 ENG, radio stack 6.24.00
from yorch.net.
4) is there anything i should know? won't this t-mobile build of "windows mobile 2003" rom work with at&t ?
any info appreciated, you can email thomas at pullen.com (removed the @ for the spam bots).
thanks!
TMO is pretty bad, iv experienced their levels of ignorance too, but once in a while, u can incounter sumone who knows alot about what they do
you should have never used tzones (if it wasnt unlimited) for transfering big amounts of data, thats why u got charged so much, for going over the allowd data amount
when connecting to your own ISP, are u connecting using THEIR # ? ... if so, then i dont know where TMO gets these ideas 4 charging u extra + the phone call
to unlock u need to go back to a 2002 rom, with the unlock software
ur build will work, but it would be better to switch to 4.00.05 , since u wont need all the useless TMO apps and what not
Hey tpullen,
Sorry to hear about your terrible time with T-Mobile.
Q: What type of plan do you have with T-Mobile?
If its only a voice plan with no data the .50 sounds about right and will be the same if you move over to AT&T. As a matter of fact AT&T's data charges are higher.
It doesn't matter that you're calling your own ISP, the fact still remains you're sending/receiving data on a voice only plan.
HTH
thanks
hey:
thanks for the replies. to answer your questions:
i had the t-mobile 3,000 minutes for $49 plan. it is only free long distance for the southeast u.s.; i think it's called a 'neighborhood' plan.
no data at all in my plan; i would call my own isp and surf the web and check email. only about 3 months ago t-mobile started charging me to check email, but not for the web. my complaint is that i am using my own isp, and the call comes out of my minutes. yes, it's sending data with a voice-only plan, but hey! i have a dial-up phone line, nothing fancy, a land line in my house. it's voice-only. if i plug a modem into my home phone line and call my isp, should i expect to get a bill from my phone company for every email i look at? to my way of thinking, and anyone is free to disagree, if i'm not USING your services then i don't want to PAY for your services. unless it is a t-mobile email, web, or proxy server i'm talking to, i don't expect to pay t-mobile. the minutes were already being deducted from my available minutes. that's all i should have to pay.
i don't think that's so outrageous.
i did unlock my phone with the xda dev build, then went back to the same tmobile windows mobile 2003 build. i wasn't sure if the xda "stays unlocked" once you unlock it and then put a new rom on, but it does.
now i have an at&t sim, and it works well enough, but the sort-of-funny thing is that you apparantly can NOT just call your own isp with at&t.
i can't seem to get a connection to work. so i don't know. maybe i will stay with at&t since they, according to their sales literature anyway, have a data network that's like 3 times faster than t-mobile's data network.
of course it's more $ for them.
whatever the case, i have 30 days to try at&t with no obligation, cancel any time, owe them nothing. everyone has that option right now, in fact, due to the new ftc "local number port" thing happening.
i'll let ya'll know how it goes if i stick with at&t. i can always stay with t-mobile, but i'm not sure if that's a good idea.
Re: thanks

Sounds like you're talking about the EDGE service. Yeah, like 4 times the cost of T-Mobile's unlimited plan. I think I'll stick to the cheaper slower service.

Owe them nothing?! You might want to read that literature again. You'll not pay a cancellation fee nor an activation fee, but you will owe them for the prorated amount of time you had service, and any other additional fees that you use. This is pretty standard in the wireless industry. So if you go over your prorated minutes for the month, you owe them airtime charges. Happened to me, so just be careful.
bye bye at&t
hi arkhangel:
yes, you are correct:
4. Every new customer gets a 30 day risk free trial. When you purchase a phone and activate service at an AT&T Wireless store or at attwireless.com, you can return your undamaged phone for a refund within the first 30 days and pay only for airtime and usage charges. It’s just one more way we can earn your trust.
so it is not without charge, and thank god i only made one 6-minute call.
as far as the EDGE network goes, it was so-so...i only viewed 2 webpages with it, they loaded pretty much as quickly as with any other data service over the xda...and the funny thing is that it consumed apparantly almost 2 mb to do so.
i am pretty frustrated now, the at&t customer service has been pretty rotten, but t-mobile isn't too great either.
i'm calling verizon next, to compare...

The phone is programmed to send an SMS to T-Mobile every time you reboot your PPCPE. These show up as e-notes to 500 just as you describe. Compare the timing of your email use vs. the timing of your reboots and see where the e-notes are coming from. I think you can purchase a bundle of a bunch (500?) of SMS messages (aka e-notes) for something like $2.99, so you could cap your cost that way.
You should also be aware that T-Mobile has gone to a flat rate for GPRS at $19.95 for unlimited internet. The comparable plan with AT&T is something like $80.

[Q] Dropping Data Plan

So, I'm thinking about dropping my $30/month unlimited data plan with Verizon. I love my eris, but I really only use data to check email and facebook a few times a day, and maybe a few other things like checking the weather, google calendar, etc. It's nice, but I feel like it's not worth paying $30 per month for the little amount that I use it.
Is there any way to drop my data plan while keeping my eris (without incurring data fees of course)? I'd like to keep the ability to make calls, send texts (including MMS), but nothing else. Is this possible?

I'm not sure you have the option to not have the $30 a month charge with any smartphone on vz.

As far as I know, if you activate what is considered a smartphone on a Verizon plan, the data plan is an automatic that cannot be removed. You'd have to switch to a feature phone (and, unfortunately, some of those require a $10 data plan themselves.)
If you are on a month-to-month you could try switching your number to one of the pre-paid services, like Cricket or something.
Ah, that's what I figured.
I might just switch back to a dumbphone and use my eris as wifi-only since I'm around wifi 90% of the time.
You need a data plan not the 30$ data plan, get the cheaper one and then you can check web on the go

Right now there is no cheaper plan. There was a brief time that they had a capped plan at $15 (I think), but right now, as of January, smartphones are $30 for unlimited data.
well I'm not sure, but right now I have a 150 MB plan for the $15 a month. I'm with Verizon and honestly I don't even use that much data monthly. I'm pretty sure if you drop them a line you could get it, it's a good savings

Yeah, that's the plan I have and that has indeed been dropped, Verizon no longer offers it except for us legacy users who happened to still have it. I usually come right up to the cap each month but it's sufficient for everything I need (I usually have wifi anyway). Hopefully Verizon will offer up some alternative plans at some point but as far as I know nothing is coming up soon.
So, no, you can't go data-less on verizon. I actually carried around my eris and my old feature phone for ages before I decided to pay for a data plan. It's annoying, but the eris works great for a wifi-only device.
yeah, a data-less eris sounds like a good idea, i'm at wifi 90% of the time anyway. i'm really just replying here cause i wanna help this guy with bugs on his new gingerbread rom and i can't post there until i get 10 of these
I heard a rumor at some point that
Verizon was doing away with the unlimited data plan in favor of a tiered option system. Has anyone heard anything about this? I would definitely switch to a capped option if it was cheaper, I don't think I've ever come close to a single GB of data usage and I never turn wifi on.

Yes, Verizon is introducing tiered data plans some time this summer.
verizon-targeting-mid-summer-for-tiered-data-plans
Yup that's it. Now I wonder what the options are going to be... Magic answer forum go!

My VZW plan has a generous 22% corporate discount for voice & unlimited web data and should be grandfathered with these new tiered pricing - nice, right. But, it will be removed if and when a new/replacement device is activated. It's one of the better deal still available for about $25/mo. w. taxes & fees for data itself, oh well - plenty of discussions over at HoFo ....
I used between 250 MB and 500 MB data monthly on the HTC Eris w. FroShedYo ROM (less w. the unlocked & HTC Ozone Global on 3VO ROM) - since I take advtange of a much faster secured wifi broadband link @ home whenever possible with marginal 3G coverage. While traveling, I did come close to using about 1 GB data without tethering and nice to not worry about going over any capped limits.
Looking at both PagePlus Cellular and MetroPCS, it will be a "challenge" to use their talk & text/limited web data plan without going over (capped at 100 MB or 200 MB) but it will be cheaper overall if I turnoff all the widgets & background apps, email checking, etc. on the Eris & keep tabs of all data downloads. The Ozone is now used with an AT&T Gophone prepaid Sim on GSM network as a backup line, and with limited usage - I get by with using 20 to 50 MB data each month.
I've not renewed/extended my VZW plan since becoming eligible again for annual equipment upgrade - with the trends for locking down the bootloader(s) and disabling the firmware (i.e. Droid X Global) - seriously debating switching to GSM for a broader selection of phones - and easily swapping phone by inserting the Sim card (excluding the iPhone, of course).

[Q] How much data does your SGS2/Android phone use?

Coming from WinMO 6.5 HD2, I'm nervous about these 500mb tarrifs for data.
T-Mobile has a 500mb limit, with unlimited browsing.
However the 2 are not seperate, so once you have used 500mb in total, you are restricted to browsing only.
No RRS
No Podcasts
No POP3 email
No Twitter (some apps only)
No Google Maps
No Internet radio (!)
Push mail seems to work, as does Opera for browsing.
The HTC RSS app has no download mananger, so my weekly podcast download is about 80mb, but by the 11th of the month I've already over 500mb, as any minor failure during dowload deletes the file and starts again.
What's your SGS2/Android experience in terms of data usage?
En_croute
i easily rack up 3GB a month
but if you disable data completely, and only do WiFi you should be safe
Apparantly we are in the 5% of users
We are called abusers by TMobile
Asked why a we couldn't buy more data time, I was met with :
a) Ohh, difficult to set up to set that up
b) The masts the masts, think of the masts
c) Abusers spoil the t-mobile experience for everyone else
PAC code here we come.
Hello THREE
I have my phone set up to use Wifi when I am at home and WiFi when I am at work. Obviously I set all my podcasts and High Usage apps to Download during those times (Using Tasker)
Outside of that I generally use about 50MB to 100MB on Google Maps, Email, other general background syncing stuff.
I think if you do all of your major syncing over a WiFi connection (Either yours or your neighbours ) then you will be hard pushed to use 500MB whilst "on the go"

T-Mobile would never say any of the above answers, you're either
a. Trolling
or
b. Making it up
Claiming T-Mobile weren't willing to take more money off you is borderline laughable.
Have fun with Three, quite possibly the most inept customer serviced network i've ever had the displeasure of dealing with.
Edit, just thought i'd add this, if you want details on how to sort out a proper unlimited data package on T-Mobile, PM me.
Actually he really did infer these things!
1. He claimed it would be difficult to set up (programme). I pointed out that as I was on 1gb currently, and the FUP (Browsing only) kicks in after that, it should not be too hard to allow 500mb boosters to be bought ad hoc, or as part of a regular package.
2. He claimed the 5% of users were "ruining the experience" for other customers, hence the 500mb limit. I pointed out that a) if we were all going into FUP, the service would still be "ruined" for the first 1/2 of the month, and b) Why sell media phones when the network is not fit for purpose.
3. And as Orage are selling 750mb & 500mb bolt ons, why can't T-Mobile. He said 5oomb for new customers and 1gb is the maximum, on older tarrifs, and the 3gb tarrif was not available (since Feb 2011).
I was spitting feathers, hence the PAC code comment.
I did consider Three, but went with 1gb data & Flext 35, and will use the first 7 days to asess my data usage under Android during the 7 day cooling off period.
Handset due tomorrow.
I'll PM you, as I have those 7 days....

I'll reply here as well so others can see this. If you take out a t-mobile contract with a data booster (those apparently unlimited 5quid ones) call them straight away and say you want to upgrade your data package to web and walk plus for the ENTIRE length of your contract.
They should offer to simply replace your 5 booster with web n walk plus, if they don't, tell them that someone in the t-mobile shop told you it can be done as long as you take it out for the contract duration.
This also will work if you have no data package as well, they'll just charge you the 5 quid a month.
The benefit? HSDPA is not enabled on the standard unlimited boosters, but is on web n walk plus
Hopefully some people can make use of this.
Burko
Even better is WebNWalk Max as the plus is also capped.
All of the above is the reason why I'm also jumping ship to three.
I currently pay T-mobile £40pcm and they want more off me just because I don't think it's fair that they cap my data at 350Kb max.
T-Mob in UK is a joke for data speeds (unless you pay extra on top of your normal tariff price)
So when working out where to go. Make sure you take the extra cost into account and check not only data caps on download amounts but also data caps on speed.
Plus is capped in volume of downloads, not speed. Obviously different people have different data needs, but for me, web n walk plus is more than enough. (with the benefit of not being charged if you go over the limit) there is no"one size fits all" data package, I just thought I'd highlight one option that's available.
Burko
According to O2 I've used 1.99GB As of 23:28 on 12 May 2011 so far this month. Good thing I have unlimited data allowance.

New Orange Customer Q

Hello guys,
I've recently switched from O2UK to Orange UK. So far it's been an ok deal, and I wanted to share some things I've learnt and hopefully some questions answered.
Now i'll be honest I got a good deal,
O2
18mth
600 mins
1200 text
1gb data
£46mth
Orange
24mth
Unlimited mins
Unlimited text
2gb data
£41
However i've had some issues;
First my Data speeds were capped to 1.8 meg. regardless of E/3G/H/H+ always 1.8meg. I researched this problem, somne said it was being on T-Mobile signal, however after some further investigation, I have found out about GPRS Premium, it's a service for the iPhone users supposedly, but after having this instated i'm now able to reach 4.9meg. So if your speeds seem poor phone CS and ask for GPRS Premium on your account. It's free so there is no reason for them to not added it nor will it cost you.
Brings me to my first question, while a bit of a wide one, what sort of speeds should I expect from Orange? When on O2 I managed to hit 6.2meg. Have you guys found any Modems that work with Orange particularly well? as I find the signal is okish, but O2 was a good 4-5 bar signal.
Now i'm on Panther Extra 41, and get a free swappable, any advise from anyone who added one and how good they are
The only two I like is the Mobile TV and Dezzer Music. however i'm not sure which to choose.

I get 1.87 meg download (just tested it) on Orange. Sometimes I get 2.5meg but rarely. Hurry up 4g.
Coming back to your "good deal", how many minutes and texts do you use a month? Do you really need unlimited and to pay so much each month? For example, I pay £19 month and get 800 minutes, 1000 texts and 1gb data. Thirteen hours of calls a month and 35 texts a day is more than enough for me. Just never heard someone paying £41 a month calling it a good deal. (But then again I'm not a new customer)
I use over a 1gb data a month, that is my reasoning, plus magic numbers for GF to me are always extremely useful.
Appreciated £40 isn't cheap but it's better than my O2 contract.

F***.... I'm happy I live in a country where 45 Euro/month gives me a flatrate not some capped plan.
2GB is what I usually use in less than a week of normal usage, or when playing around with new ROM's within 2-3 days.
You were had.
I used to be with Orange but there are a few things I have issues with them:
Their prices are atrocious. For £33 a month (£29 for the phone) on Three I have:
2,000 minutes (UK to UK, landland, mobile, etc)
5,000 Three-to-Three minutes
3,000 Texts
Unlimited data (2Mbps+)
On Orange I paid £30pm for
300 minutes
500MB data
Unlimited texts
Now, I won't be using anything near those number of minutes and stuff on my new contract, but I will hammer the living **** out of that unlimited data, it was £32 for 500 mins, 5000 texts unlimited data, or £33 for that, plus tethering free) no brainer.
They rip you off on upgrades and the likes. For instance, last time I called to upgrade they were offering the HTC Desire for £25pm Free on a similar contract to myself. When I called to upgrade the "best" they could do is drop £5 off my bill and make me pay £50 for the phone. I effectively got it for £25pm, but had to pay, whereas "new customers" got the phone free.
That £5 a month they knocked off my bill? First it lasted 18 months of a 27 month contract, then they, after arguing the **** with me, upped it to 24 months. After that they flat out refused to help me. I called to buy out of my final two months the other day and their retentions team were pulling out all the stops to get me to sign. I told them I wanted a Galaxy S3 for £25 and they're like "yeah that's gonna cost you £199.99 for the same package with 500mb data" so I told them to go forth and multiply and got my data package with Three (unlimited, good fecking bye 500mb data cap and overage charges).
Finally, 250mb, 500mb, 750mb, 1GB and 2GB data caps? Get out. Unlimited like Everything Everywhere's other company, T-Mobile, or get out.
I had a good run with Orange for 5 years but their ****ty customer service, prices and packages put me off.
The only GOOD thing about Orange was OrangeCare insurance. £6pm and £15 excess.
I wouldn't say you got a good deal, on three I get 2000 minutes, 5000 three to three minutes, 5000 texts and unlimited data for £34/month the unlimited data is what makes it worth it, and I will never use that many minutes and text.
Edit: my data usage is currently at 1.86GB from 14th to 19th July, so if I was on a 2GB plan I would be paying very soon.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Well if you say so guys,
Three is a waste of space where I live, unlimited maybe but poor signal, and when it's good it's capped. If it works for your good though, but here its crap.
T-Mobile nah after there throttling, and diabolical service I just couldn't do it.
Basically it was O2 or Orange, and Orange was better. Anyways you got any idea about Basebands/Modems?
Orange's customer service suck. I was with them for 5 years and they just suck.
And yeah, 1.09GB used since the 17th. 2 days. I had a 500MB cap with Orange. I get 2.5Mbps (which is the same as I got on Orange, and 0.5Mbps more than my landline broadband lol) down and 1.5Mbps up means I'm using this as my PC internet now when everyone else is playing games on their computers (Castleville destroys our 2mbps internet).
I've no idea about modem firmwares, but I can safely say Orange suck for customer service.
And sorry to thread crap a little bit but I'm still a bit pissed at my recent dealings with them. Good luck with your new baby I'm loving mine!

UK Data Sharing Plan

Hi,
I thought I would share my surprise find today.
I am with O2 and got the new Gear S on a basic contract. This came with 100MB data and at the time I was offered 300MB for £2 more.
So I thought I would try it for a week and see how it went.
As I enjoyed having the watch and whilst it may not be perfect it is as good as my gear fit plus the benefit of text and calls when disconnected from my phone, I decided I might as well get the extra data just in case.
I logged into my O2 and saw that the was a data sharing option. Not knowing what this was I called customer service for more details.
It seems they now offer a tariff where you can share data between devices. So the long and short is I have signed up for one of these tariffs.
Yes it costs me £6 extra a month but I have gone from 1GB on my phone and 100MB on the Gear S to 5GB between both. There is an option to share the 1GB between both and that would have cost me another 50p. I just wanted more data.
Thus I thought I would share with the group in case anyone else was interested as it seems the states have had similar packages for a while.

Hi,
I thought I would share my surprise find today.
I am with O2 and got the new Gear S on a basic contract. This came with 100MB data and at the time I was offered 300MB for £2 more.
So I thought I would try it for a week and see how it went.

This is very interesting, I am on the original O2 tariff you mentioned.
Whilst I see you are getting more data allowance, I really don't think you'll use a fraction of the original 100mb available on the Gear S. There aren't any apps that require an internet connection that use up large amounts of data, even the Opera browser.
But if you have gained a better value for money data allowance for your phone as a result of the tariff change then it's worth considering.
100mb is ample for now but thanks for sharing ?

I'm on EE and they do a similar thing but I think it's £10 a month. However, I've gone for an EE PAYG for £10 a month that gives me 500Mb data & unlimited texts + 150 mins talktime. My 4G phone contract is 5Gb and unlimited calls and texts so that more than amply covers my needs.
