XDA running linux - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

I saw this a while ago, and tonight I ran into this:
http://pigeond.net/photos/xda-linux/
I run Debian GNU/Linux on my desktop at home, and I'm not a big fan of the SynCE project since I'm a GNOME user and a vast majority of the SynCE tools are built for KDE. So, I would love nothing more than to be able to run Linux on my XDA.
Has any progress been made with this? It looks like someone got linux running on the XDA, but even if we got X working, what kind of task would it be to develop a phone app? What kind of support is needed before this can happen?
Does anyone know anything about the progress? =]

It seems, that this project is located on sourceforge
Here is the Link ...
http://sourceforge.net/projects/xanadux/
perhaps start the job with him.
I am also willing to help, but not familar with linux at all.

status of linux
Hi,
As you may have seen from other posts too, the Linux porting effort has been severely stalled more than once. Currently pigeon posted some progress here on the board which is about similar to what the xanadux project was in. Unfortunately no one currently has time to work further on this. I think pigeon probably will be making the most progress, and possibly we will integrate it all into one place some day. Seeing the current number of contributors and amount of time available I wouldn't hold my breath though ...

Android Development Athena

Hiya People
I have looked before about putting android on the Athena but nobody has come up with a working solution I think its time we started this back up from scratch.
I am up for helping with development surely in this collective there are people who could pitch in and do there part im going to look at putting android 2.3 gingerbread on the athena.
if anybody is interested please do speak up
i dunno anything about cooking, but i can beta test to hell whatever you guys come up with ^_^
Android on athena is still problem, there are no kernel drives for ati w2284, diskonchip, 3g, sd. So y can cook some android distro, but these things dont work and those system is unuseable. Athena boots for me from external usb stick, but its still early to cook android system. It needs some person with good C programing to modify existing drivers for athena
Hell,I'm in.......

Hell, yes sir.....I'm in. After all I learn since,Ubuntu 8.04 on HTC Shift,I beleive there is a way to do so....And after all i learn through ubuntu,Mint8,Backtrack3,fedora11 to 14. I'm sure there is a way....I will start doing research on it right now,but were should i start at.The best ways of getting the anwser,is dealing with dudes on Mirc or IRC.Trust me,After all they said and done to me,as in Aircrack with backtrack3 & Ubuntu 8.10 hell i can't wait untill we become HTC X7500 Advantage Android!
I beleive it could be interesting challenge. I have never develop anything similar (enterprise systems only) - so, can you give me links to start with. I want to help and get Android on my Advantage.
I tryed to compile kernel from ltg and some other repos with no success. I only have one working binary-only haret image that boots. Im interested in dualboot androd and just linux with X. If anyone have source of kernel that actually boots and support display adapter plz post.
you go, make me happy.
i use my athena every day, and i wanted to see android on it for years now.
could you use something out of the androidathena project from back in 2008.
I will come back to see if there is progress in this project, there are a lot of people who had made a beginning and then suddenly stopped, hope you will make it working.
Hell Yeah!!!

This link is an All-in-one release Android on Athena file(click on the link above)
This is what the link says:
Quote from mistadman
Hello everyone... I'm back with a new update! I finally got the touch screen working! Still have a lot of work left of course.
If you want to play with it, you can get it here: http://rapidshare.com/files/118229739/Android-Athena-05282008.exe.html. This is an "All-n-1 Release". Just copy the exe to your sd card and run. After clicking, it could take up to 20 seconds to boot. Be patent!
As always, this is work in progress... Thanks for testing!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the all in one file with explanation on how to install.
I installed it, but do not know how to use the config and patch.
maybe you can, it should work.
maybe from there someone could pick it up and make a nice android Froyo or Gingerbread for us.
Thanx in advance.
Everything is in here

Glad to see this
As a long time 7501 user, I use it every day even with sucky WM on it, I am glad to see some people interested in reviving a truely great machine.
athena kernel in-progress
Hello everybody,
So, I am working on the project of athena linux porting. You can find a help on the AthenaInstall link of athena topic from the htc-linux.org wiki
It is a kernel 2.35 for athena and the devices ( screen, keyboard, microdrive, touchscreen, power ...) should work.
You could also install an angstrom rootfs.
I expect after some improvements and corrections to build an athena kernel for android .
Good Luck
I don't know how many started this undertaking. And came up short.
So good luck !!!!

[Q] How to port Ubuntu Touch to android devices?

I was thinking in try to port Ubuntu Touch to my Android Device (Razr D3).
I've saw Ubuntu running on some devices, but only devices that developers give attention (Nexus series per example). I've saw once Ubuntu Touch running in a Xperia Mini Pro, but did not understand how that guy ported the SO to the Xperia series.
Well, my doubt is: Where do I start this job? Where do I get the files to try something? How do I create compatibility for my device?
I really don't understand anything about this, I want to learn. And, if success, try to port Ubuntu to all Razr series.

(apologies for crap urls, still a new member here........)
Best place atm is wiki dot ubuntu.com/Touch/PortingFlippedInProgress but it's still kind of a mess given the ubuntu team hasn't given it many updates recently to reflect the flipped images. Unless you're well experienced in messing android with both android and ubuntu I'd give a miss until someone rewrites it.
I've been trying to get my tf201 working for months now to no avail but good luck to you!
p.s. the irc log from a porting day has good info as well irclogs dot ubuntu.com/2013/08/01/%23ubuntu-touch.html

Thanks, but, the links do not work. Can you post a functional link?
Also, I have been searching for something in official Ubuntu page, but a didn't find anything! Dude, is there another forum or ftp severs that stores at least generical images to download? The official comunity seems to do not give a minimal help or importance to work to do ports made by amateurs developers, I cannot understand how Ubuntu Phone be open source if any source is available.

tips and pointers to start devin>>

i had always meant to do some developing but the drop in activity i realized when i moved from the sensation to the rezound really compelled me to start plus i have some work that i really have to do and really dont want to do so you know how it goes. Anyway to it
i started by googling how to build android roms which lead me to xda university giving me a nice expaination as to the various parts of android which i was already familliar
another search lead me to the offical how to build android from source page. i had a few concerns so i thaught i would ask here
i have knowlage building various web applications(php,js,ect) and not the let the fromework so this for me kinda apps i like thinking and innovating. i have a little experience with c++(i was at the stage of learning a gui when my old laptop crashed) so i think i have atleast good enough programming experience to catch on to java at a nice pace. Am currently reading and following googles nice little guid on developing android. Am in the process of setting up work envo (already got ubuntu 12.04 up). and thaught i would just leave a post here to see if anyone had any advice for me?
what i wanna do is be able to port for us,build original roms AOSP they call it for us, build and or port sense roms for us and eventually get to the point where i can get us sense5 or help neo(or any other dev) help us get sense 5. oh and i think i would like to build/modify kernels as well. oh oh and being able to invent exploits to get root or s-off for devices i might get in the future.
Question: while i was reading i was seeing where the buiding process was doing alot of synceing with google servers ect. i dont actually want to submit whatever garbage i might write to them while am testing so im still on the right track following the guid here correcto??
short version: I wanna build android custom roms ect not just edit files and put it out am i on the right tract following the guid here (i already know a lil programming)? http://source.android.com/source/initializing.html
any advice/resources/links welcomed
oki am on the page that says "building and running" i dont see anything for our device am guessing thats because development from aosp has stopped for us and thats where ppl like neo and cyanogen make thier magic. what is the next tut or read for me?
Try this. You could always pull Neo's CM 10.2 repos instead of the 10.1.

[Q] Windows Phone 8

Is it possible to port/install Windows Phone 8 on an Android based device?
No. But Android W8 themes/Roms have been made. Basically modifies the look of android to achieve the look of W8
I'm not really focused on the look, rather the OS itself. Much like one could flash iOS onto an Android device.
You mean the menus as opposed to the live tiles? IOS can't be done either.
I'm talking about replacing the Android OS (kernel, /system, /data, all partitions) with the Windows Phone 8 OS. Not just the UI, but the whole thing.
@xlxcrossing he's wanting to replace the entire OS, not just the UI. Like putting Ubuntu on a Windows PC.
As for the original question, it could, in theory, be possible. However, it would be extremely difficult due to WP8 being closed source, and not based on Linux. You would pretty much have to start from scratch, and many parts of it would most likely be broken and unfixable. It would be hard to find a dev willing to take it on. It's not the same as porting AOSP or even Ubuntu Touch.

@_phoey Thanks for the answer. Has Ubuntu Touch been ported yet? Or can I just go to Ubuntu's website and snag it there?
EDIT:
I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2199491
But it's tools to build. Something I'm unable to do (not lack of wanting to learn, but unstable internet to setup buildbox).

I think that someone here began work on it, but never got it to a stable state. I also have an unstable internet connection, and am also lacking a somewhat modern PC with enough memory and storage to build on, or I would attempt it.

I Knew that, he made a comment about the "look" being different from the "OS itself" in regards to me telling him there are themes that transform it into Windows 8. My first answer was the short version of yours, which was no.

With all due respect, your original answers seemed rather vague and easily misunderstood. They led me to believe that you were thinking he was just wanting a theme, not the entire OS. My apologies for misunderstanding.

Not really. He said he wanted WP8 which I understood completely. But why would someone want that but then not care about how it looks? His response is what was confusing, so I ushered him in a direction to get the Windows 8 "experience" on his phone without the actual port which at this time as you've already stated doesn't exist. So in review I helped him to go toward what he wanted as opposed to describing why something isn't available. Vague and to-the-point are separate things.

ROM building and porting

I am going to start building roms and porting roms etc. I may not be a developer, but when I am to a level of satisfaction with myself, I probably will be. I am posting this here because I will be building for this phone.
I recently acquired a windows vista laptop with major (I mean MAJOR) software issues and driver conflicts that I have been able to fix, as the PC could not even boot into an OS, I will be installing windows 7 ultimate when the download finishes. I am not a noob when it comes to working with PCs and etc.
So please post and tips, tricks, guides, and general help here or PM me.
I would have started sooner if I had the computer to use and work on.
I plan on learning more than just building and compiling but that would be a good start.

First tip - ditch Windows and use a Linux distro. I use Ubuntu. A LOT easier to build from source using a native machine, imo.
Dual-boot that ****. I need me my Win8.1 for stuff like rearranging tiles for no reason.
Actually, I get to rebuild my computer tower when I get a chance to use my friends spare parts. My laptops motherboard went out yesterday about 20 minutes after I installed ubuntu, And it was a dual boot. Ruined my day. So hopefully I'll be able to restart the project when I get the tower rebuilt. As it is from about 2002 with 512mb of ram. Could be a few days or weeks, who knows.
