5 Pieces Of Advice - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

Ok
I Just purchased an XDA1 off a friend of mine.
I have an orange sim, but will be getting an O2 sim with these 300 free txt's etc..
If you have 5 Pieces of advice to give to a new XDA User...What 5 pieces of advice would they be?
So far, I have no idea...I'm still trying to get my head around it lol
How do you unlock the phone. I have been hearing about sofware...but see no links to do it? What other XDA sites are there that you know of? Is there a seperate site from this site, or is it just a forum??
Sorry for many questions! Just trying to work out what I should do first...
Cheers

for advices:
1. Get a SD card and take a backup ... you will always need to restore
2. do NOT drop your XDA ... it costs a small fortune to repair it
to unlock it, you can get the tool from www.xda-developers.com/XDAunlock/
Good luck ...

3. Get a taskmanager, like pocketnav. to close program's you don't use...
4. get a battery watcher for on your todayscreen.

what battery watchers are there? I got myself a rom from the rom kitchen which has Pocket Plus on...although it's only a demo..It ran out after 10 mins of using the rom so did not get a chance to test it properly.
Also, how long does the battery last roughly on a full charge?

I use batememtime v 3.2 its freeware....

Is this any easy fix or is it too far gone to fix?

Hi there, I've recently bought an XDA / Wallaby originally locked to O2 and thanks to your software on the site I've now got it running on my Orange payg with full web access in under 2 hours of ownership - Wonderful! Big improvement over my Psion Revo .
Since getting this, my wife's now decided she loves the xda also so I'm looking for a second one for her.
My question is this; I've now found one listed on ebay quite local to me (so I can see it's as described before paying) but it has the following apparent problem, quoted verbatim:-
'I recently tried to upgrade the OS on it which resulted in me deleting the ROM Image so the OS/Rom needs to be re-installed. I would take the time to do this myself but do not have the time, and I have just got myself a P900 so am looking to use that. The software can be easily re-installed and is freely available. I have moved to the P900 purely for its bluetooth and camera functions and no other reason, i was totally happy with the XDA, it just needs a good home with someone that will take the time to load the software back onto it.'
Can I obtain any software to rectify this or am I biting off too great a problem?
As the item closes tonight (thursday) I'd appreciate any comments asap.
Thanks all, Charles
If Boootloader is working, reflashing the device should be no problem. You just require a SD-Card >= 64 MB and a (external) Card Writer.
How to do thi is described here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Wallaby_HT_FlashSD
You can ask him, if he can try enter Bootloader by pressing Power button and doing a soft reset. It will be interesting, what there is displayed....
Stefan
thanks for that. Just read the link article. So I need to factor in the cost of a SD read/writer as I haven't got one. On that basis I think it could work out cheaper to just buy another O2 locked wallaby xda and unlock it for Orange.
But I'll watch to see what the item closes at.
BTW, do you have any idea of the price of the sd read/writer? I'll check with ebay myself as well.
Rgds
Charles
Should be not much. About 5 Euro, max 10 Euro + shipping.....

[Q] getting started with my new vibrant (already rooted + installed clockwork)

are there any apps that I MUST have (aside from launcher pro and a new keyboard)
any roms that I should flash? (I am staying away from froyo because of lack of support for the headphone jack and no jit (afaik that's why froyo is so much faster than eclair) and im in no rush to get flash)
any other tips? (yes I looked at the tips post. so far i have installed that screenshot taking tool, gotten the adblocker and installed titanium backup)
thanks guys!
ps. what's the word on cyanogenmod 6? when is it slated to release?
again thanks for all your help, I'm loving my new vibrant.
-former g1 user.
The word on Cyanogen is it's in the works.
Link:
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/home/whats-up-with-cm
6.1 is the current work-in-progress and is coming together nicely. There’s a few new features like touch-to-focus in the camcorder, dismiss notifications by swiping, kernel updates for most devices, and improved performance. There will also be support for a few new devices- Acer Liquid, HTC Wildfire and Samsung Vibrant. My eye is also on the new HTC phones that are about to get released like the G2.

one last question: are the lag fixes worth doing? what's the risk? and most roms tell you to uninstall them before flashing, how easy is this to do? and what roms can be "lagfixed?" what is the best way to do a lagfix?
Well, I suggest playing around with your phone. If you notice it's slow, and not as fast, go ahead and install it. Also, download Quadrant Standard. Test it. If your score is 1100-1500, go ahead and install the lagfix.
To install it, this is what I do. I am not quite sure if this is best way, but it works for me.
Remember, I am not responsible for what you do to your phone.
Step 1: Download RyanZA's lagfix from the market. (search "lagfix")
Step 2: Install EXT tools from the app.
Step 3: Apply Lagfix.
If you ever want to uninstall the lagfix, go to the app and do it from there.
ROMs that work with the lagfix as I know:
Vibrant Hybrid
Frankin-Twiz.
I also recommend installing the Captivates camera. It's a 1000x better. You can look that up in the tips thread.
I'm running the Voodoo lag fix on Bionix 1.3. The phone absolutely flies and the battery life is excellent. I'm also pretty sure that you can remove the lag fix by simply placing a named folder inside of the voodoo folder and rebooting, so it should be pretty easy.
I don't always complain, but when I do, I #BlameWes
Oh, also, here's another tip:
If your battery is horrible, let it drain ALL THE WAY, make sure it turns off. Then charge it to 100%. This restarts the cycle, I do this twice a month.
thanks!!!!!
You've got choices...
I'm also running 1.3 Bionix, but with the KingKlick kernel and no lag fix. It might not "fly" like the voodoo lag fix version, but it is quick enough and the battery life is amazing. Been using the phone unplugged for about 8 hours with some calls, texts, and work-related emails and I still have 79% of battery.
Tried all of the 2.1 Roms so far and played with them for a few days each, but have finally settled in with the above.
Whatever you do, give it a few days of regular use before you turn to the next one. And be careful to read the OP's instructions or you'll end up getting all crazy and wanting to throw your phone against a wall cause it bricked...

-alright friend. Keep at it and follow the thread on using Odin to get it back. I've gone back to Odin at least 3-4 times and I know a bunch of folks here have visited it more times than they care to admit.
If you can do it after a good nights sleep, it's probably best cause otherwise you get easily frustrated and really do want to throw it against a wall -- but don't.
You'll recover it - just keep at it. Good luck and hope to hear back that you got it going.

thanks man. i can't even get to the download screen. it ether goes to the battery screen or the vibrant screen depending on which method i use.
my cousin has the same phone, but she bought it through tmobile (not ebay like me) and has a warranty and insurance. should i ask her to get it replace? or will i be able to unbrick?
i should add i can't even get adb going.
would i be able to buy one off contract and return it? wheres a good place to do this?
these phones are almost unbrickable, if you get the vibrant screen you should be able to unbrick it....also the phone is less then a year old so it should have a warranty if it comes down to that.
Keep at it, try these few ideas

--If you got it from eBay, try and see if either the seller is willing to fix or look into Square Trade Warranties. I have a couple of their warranties on phones and ipods and they have always come through for me when the items I get need repair. Also, check into Craigslist locally and see if there is anyone that does phone repair. I have a guy in CA, near where I live that has fixed my electronics before and I found him on Craigslist.
-keep trying man. don't give up.
it's all been sorted out. i have a friend at costco who does returns
thanks for all the help though. I'll make sure read instructions more clearly (although it wasn't entirely my fault, the instructions said don't do a nadroid backup, not don't do a nandroid restore, which is what i did. and guess what? my new vibrant isn't locked! i can get into recovery using the buttons)

Atrix Won't Launch Entertainment Center! HELP!

I was foolishly trying to do the hack for webtop over HDMI, and most likely messed up the files in ADB for the entertainment center.. now when I plug in the phone to the TV via the included HDMI, it won't even show the option to launch entertainment center. If anyone could help me, it would be VERY appreciated!
did you backup the files you replaced? Did you take notice of what you were doing and which files? If so just replace those off the DUMP from the SBFs.. if not then titanium backup, flash the SBF, adn start over.
Well I dont even think the files got replaced, cuz the command window kept saying it couldn't find files to even replace them with. I unrooted the phone, thinking that would solve my issue.
Did you try the steps in the thread to "undo" the webtop mod? If so, best bet at this point is just SBF back..
Those won't work for me. :/ and could you please help me with flashing the SBF? Would that fix my problem? I really dont want to mess up this phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072
thats the guide to flash the SBF... i jsut gave another guy hell for not searching- consider yourself lucky lol. By flashign the SBF it will take you back to "retail" load. Make sure you phone is charged before starting as it takes about 20ish minutes or so to complete and doesnt charge during the time its doign the business
Alright haha, thank you so much Now on that page it has 2 downloads at the time.. I'm assuming I'll get the 1.2.6 download right? My atrix's build number says OLYFR_U4_1.2.6

Yeah, you're gonna want the 1.2.6
But I do suggest that you install GingerBlur actually and have the hack readily available without having to do much yourself, and also be able to do the HDMI Mirroring. Unless you want to keep the look of motoblur (blech).
Hm... I'll have to think about it.. My phones about dead, so I have time to decide. I honestly like Motoblur and would prefer to keep it.. But I want the Webtop hack to work so bad, but I can't get it to work :/ ugh
RSDlite won't install.. it says "This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

Same Issue - Help Needed
My phone has the same issue as well. When I plug in my phone into my TV, all that shows is the Motorola symbol. It does not launch the entertainment center menu. Is there a way to fix or download an app to fix?
FYI, I'm not a developer. I came across this from a google search so I wouldn't know how to do any install, reboot, etc. As well, I bought this from another person who was an app developer. I'm assuming it's been rooted and I'm assuming that's why the entertainmnet center menu won't launch. Thank you in advance for your time and help!

Titan I, error code...

I am Johnny-come-lately to this debranding scheme. I am in America, but I chose to downgrade to the Euro Rom. Half of it was a success, the other half a failure. The four lines on the top all said okay. The installation that follows went about a line and a half and errored out with the line: wrong or improper sign, which I suppose could be short for "signature". Anyway when I rebooted the phone it got to the HTC screen and froze right there. Also it is in the boot loop. I tried reinstalling the Rom, but it gave the same results. I haven't been able to install SPL 2.05 either. I would like to move forward. But without an OS on the phone, nothing else recognizes it. I have been using the GC method with a single card reader and an SD card. I gave an 8Gb SanDisk flash drive a try but to no avail. I have also tried the various naming variations that are employed here and there. So what does the error message mean? What are my chances of going forward with the Cingular rom so as to finish HSPLing it. Or going back to a shipped or stock rom.
EDIT: I have access to the bootloader and SPL mode.
Thanks to all of you for your unfailing support to us neophytes.

Try to find non-SDHC card for gold-carding.
The best result is SD 1.0 — up to 2 Gb. That what I do always - no issues on any type of thumb drive or card with reader. Other guys here have also success with SD 1.1 which is up to 4 Gb. But 8 Gb will not work.

My card is HD and is a single card reader. I have a 1Gb and a 4Gb thumb drives. No luck with either of the sticks, but the HD card works. I'm going to take another path. I need the file; IMG_Eternity_Cingular_US_1.10.502.04_Radio_16.23.0 2.26_A… (Radio 16). I'll be able to move forward with that. Where can I download it at?

AndrewSH is correct; I had your exact same problem but before I get ahead of myself; your device must read x310e after you install the Euro ROM; if it doesn't you're dead right there. You may be the exception but no high capacity card worked on the two Titans I did; however, I did successfully use a PNY 4 GB thumb drive; a red one in fact that comes in a two pack - red/blue thumb drives from Wal-Mart with a Y cable. I tried an 8 gigger; no dice. When you flash SPL205; you need to be really, really patience; you might say to yourself this is not doing a damn thing...give it a solid 30 minutes before you give it up for dead; out of the blue my device came alive about 15 minutes into it and successfully updated the SPL by saying bootloader ok and radio ok. I cannot stress enough how important this 2nd step is and have the patience to wait it out. You only format your thumb drive/micro SD card once; that's it; all you have to do after that is remove the 1st ROM and replace it with the baby ROM from SPL205. One more thing, if you haven't renamed the image do so...change it from ETERIMG to ETERDIAG...those 8 letters that's it. "diag" behaves differently than "img". And look, I realize this stuff makes for boring reading but read all the threads on HSPL not just the Titan; I'm not implying you read everything here...but specific to HSPL and Windows Phone 7, you bet...regardless of device. I don't want to sound like a grouchy old man here but it took me 4 days to get this right and I did a level of reading I've never done before here and I've been flashing phones a long time; there's no quick fix solution here and to be frank, it's a crap shoot; it may and again it may not work. I rewrote my own experience here...read it and do exactly what I say, no shortcuts. One day I will sit down and rewrite the darn thing in common sense language. I can't stand a tutorial written over my head and there are a few here who do great stuff but are thee worse teachers. It reminds me of a calculus teacher teaching 2nd graders..nope! I realize this is frustrating...join the party! Your phone will work after the initial flash to either the Cingular 1.10 or European 1.09 but it's like stepping back in time. And unless you're really living in a cave, there is a stock Microsoft ROM for the damn thing. Don't ask me how much sleep or the lack of sleep I got during those 4 days. There's no comparison between locked and truly unlocked; once you turn this beast loose there's no going back.

I know what you mean, I know what mean... I have been reading a lot also. But coming late to the process, where all the posted links are dead, has left us late bloomers at a disadvantage. Thank you so much! Yeah I read the threads, and the tutorials. They were not QUITE clear enough, But the one thing I noticed right off the bat was, a LOT of people failed to simply read those posts. I read them and I can tell you that every one of them made the picture clearer. The European file errored out with a "wrong sign" or some such. So I don't even have a Rom in my phone. So I couldn't charge my battery. I bought a great little plug-in charger that I can put my battery in and charge it. Then I discovered that in Zune update mode that it will charge. So I've been doing that. I still have boot mode and PLC mode- and update mode. So I can still flash. So here goes nothing! Thanks a cool million!

Did I do it!? I did the files correctly. Here is what it says;
P139100
HSPL2.5. 160015.3(137079)
eMMC SND 15188MB
CotullaH(F:81,ID:1,V11,B:F8)
Radio-16.23.06.10
When the phone starts up, I still see the HTC logo in green. So did I do it!? EDIT: BTW, when I restarted it, I had about 10 updates waiting for me. They were all AT&T apps if I'm not mistaken.

Looks good. Now you have to make a decision - what custom to flash to your phone. Most of the customs here need Radio ver 17. As for me - I was using ver 17 for almost a year but than I returned to radio ver 16 - better signal quality and faster network detection (but it's absolutely the local problem of your carrier and coverage - so try by yourself). I wanna say that ver 16 and ver 17 radios need different roms - because of different OEM part. So choosing your custom - pay attention on the radio ver needed in rom description.
Thanks AndrewSh- Thanks everyone!

Thanks! The finish seemed so anticlimactic. The struggle, the doubt, the fear, the frustration, the lack of answers, a clear path to move forward on. Now that that is over I'm feeling much better. When it came down to it, my SD card started dying. The thumb drives didn't work. Then out of the blue I put the second file on my 1Gb stick and it flashed like a champ. Then the last file flashed over the same easy way.
I'm thinking about the Deepshining Rom. I like the way it looks. I'm looking for substance, but I'm also looking for eye candy. I run Windows 7- glass, aero... Then I set up a Windows 8 machine for my wife at work. They took the glass and aero out of it. Yuck. The stock Titan Rom looks like Windows 8. Deepshining looks like it has a glass aero look to it. Vivid colors also.
Hey thanks so much for your patient, helpful tutelage for everyone in helping to get us going. I couldn't have done it without the myriad of genuinely kind people here. Thanks EVERYONE. THANKS A COOL MILLION!

[Q] Motorola xt910 How do i access the phone with the screen disabled?

Hello guys im a long time lurker here, but this is my first time posting.. sadly for some reason my xt910 went down on me today, the screen cracked just by having it in my pants, and it seems the lcd is broken and the touch interface too.. im goint to take it to my provider for a warranty but since they most surely will wipe it off clean when they replace the screen, i wanted to backup my data.. notes, pictures etc.. i have everything saved in my phone memory ( the rest is on my sd, safe and sound).. the thing is... how do i access the data on my phone with the screen like that? i cant access through my PC because i cant unlock the screen..
any ideas? please help...
Try plugging it into your PC and see if the drive shows up. Should give you access. Sorry if you've already tried this.

Well i just came back from my Provider offices aaand... they will let me know in 7 days if and how theyll fix it and if i approve by then they will wipe all the info.. i tried to tell them not to.. but its useless, narrow minded people are all around here in Mexico..
So i have those 7 days to figure out a way.. and try to get everything back.. still from the estimate amount they told me i will have to pay (300 dlls) for the screen replacement i doubt i will go on with it.. for less than that i can get another high end phone.. and i guess ill wait until the screen replacement for this one drops to an affordable 100 dlls..
Ive seen in alibaba.com that they have it for 100 dlls now.. but im not sure.. have you guys ever tried using that site?
