[Q] getting started with my new vibrant (already rooted + installed clockwork) - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

are there any apps that I MUST have (aside from launcher pro and a new keyboard)
any roms that I should flash? (I am staying away from froyo because of lack of support for the headphone jack and no jit (afaik that's why froyo is so much faster than eclair) and im in no rush to get flash)
any other tips? (yes I looked at the tips post. so far i have installed that screenshot taking tool, gotten the adblocker and installed titanium backup)
thanks guys!
ps. what's the word on cyanogenmod 6? when is it slated to release?
again thanks for all your help, I'm loving my new vibrant.
-former g1 user.

The word on Cyanogen is it's in the works.

6.1 is the current work-in-progress and is coming together nicely. There’s a few new features like touch-to-focus in the camcorder, dismiss notifications by swiping, kernel updates for most devices, and improved performance. There will also be support for a few new devices- Acer Liquid, HTC Wildfire and Samsung Vibrant. My eye is also on the new HTC phones that are about to get released like the G2.

one last question: are the lag fixes worth doing? what's the risk? and most roms tell you to uninstall them before flashing, how easy is this to do? and what roms can be "lagfixed?" what is the best way to do a lagfix?

Well, I suggest playing around with your phone. If you notice it's slow, and not as fast, go ahead and install it. Also, download Quadrant Standard. Test it. If your score is 1100-1500, go ahead and install the lagfix.
To install it, this is what I do. I am not quite sure if this is best way, but it works for me.
Remember, I am not responsible for what you do to your phone.
Step 1: Download RyanZA's lagfix from the market. (search "lagfix")
Step 2: Install EXT tools from the app.
Step 3: Apply Lagfix.
If you ever want to uninstall the lagfix, go to the app and do it from there.
ROMs that work with the lagfix as I know:
Vibrant Hybrid
Frankin-Twiz.
I also recommend installing the Captivates camera. It's a 1000x better. You can look that up in the tips thread.

I'm running the Voodoo lag fix on Bionix 1.3. The phone absolutely flies and the battery life is excellent. I'm also pretty sure that you can remove the lag fix by simply placing a named folder inside of the voodoo folder and rebooting, so it should be pretty easy.
I don't always complain, but when I do, I #BlameWes

Oh, also, here's another tip:
If your battery is horrible, let it drain ALL THE WAY, make sure it turns off. Then charge it to 100%. This restarts the cycle, I do this twice a month.

thanks!!!!!

You've got choices...
I'm also running 1.3 Bionix, but with the KingKlick kernel and no lag fix. It might not "fly" like the voodoo lag fix version, but it is quick enough and the battery life is amazing. Been using the phone unplugged for about 8 hours with some calls, texts, and work-related emails and I still have 79% of battery.
Tried all of the 2.1 Roms so far and played with them for a few days each, but have finally settled in with the above.
Whatever you do, give it a few days of regular use before you turn to the next one. And be careful to read the OP's instructions or you'll end up getting all crazy and wanting to throw your phone against a wall cause it bricked...

-alright friend. Keep at it and follow the thread on using Odin to get it back. I've gone back to Odin at least 3-4 times and I know a bunch of folks here have visited it more times than they care to admit.
If you can do it after a good nights sleep, it's probably best cause otherwise you get easily frustrated and really do want to throw it against a wall -- but don't.
You'll recover it - just keep at it. Good luck and hope to hear back that you got it going.

thanks man. i can't even get to the download screen. it ether goes to the battery screen or the vibrant screen depending on which method i use.
my cousin has the same phone, but she bought it through tmobile (not ebay like me) and has a warranty and insurance. should i ask her to get it replace? or will i be able to unbrick?

i should add i can't even get adb going.

would i be able to buy one off contract and return it? wheres a good place to do this?

these phones are almost unbrickable, if you get the vibrant screen you should be able to unbrick it....also the phone is less then a year old so it should have a warranty if it comes down to that.

Keep at it, try these few ideas

--If you got it from eBay, try and see if either the seller is willing to fix or look into Square Trade Warranties. I have a couple of their warranties on phones and ipods and they have always come through for me when the items I get need repair. Also, check into Craigslist locally and see if there is anyone that does phone repair. I have a guy in CA, near where I live that has fixed my electronics before and I found him on Craigslist.
-keep trying man. don't give up.

it's all been sorted out. i have a friend at costco who does returns

thanks for all the help though. I'll make sure read instructions more clearly (although it wasn't entirely my fault, the instructions said don't do a nadroid backup, not don't do a nandroid restore, which is what i did. and guess what? my new vibrant isn't locked! i can get into recovery using the buttons)

[Q] Samsung VIbrant Problems anyone???

Hello everyone, im not one to post much, i bascily find what i need say what i must and im done... I purchased 2 samsung vibrants, made a contract and never been so happy with a phone... A few days after having the phone, i start having issues when trying to make a call... Phone stays in Dialing screen and doesnt go anywhere from there, or goes black, or just drops the call or doesnt make the call at all and goes rightback to the main screen... ALSO!!! text messeges wouldnt go through with a 3g signal full bars... soon after i started having issues with a few programs the sims would give me an error, other aps would get the shakes, freeze, market doesn load , just a black screen... so i called tmobile let them know what was going on.... made us do a reset lost everything on the phones.... waited a few more days same problems again this time we went and got the sim cards changed.... few hours later same thing again... so after we passed the 14 day period to return the phones or what not they gave us a bit of a hassle to have them replaced but they replaced them... Mind you this issues was random and everything happend while having a better then good enough signal... so we get the replacements and a few days later... same issues again... Now my concern is how lucky can i be to get 4.... FOUR!!! not 1... but 4 phones that do the same exact things...
Id like to know how many ppl are having any of these issues besides the gps one... cause tmobile reps keep saying "OH i know "Blank" has this phone and hasnt had any issues at all, we havent recieved many calls about this phone.. " Im sure its Bull but please if any of you have had these issues please post id like to get something done about this cause at this point i love the phone but i cant deal with not being able to use my phone when i want to... Ive taken a few pics of the errors and a video or two but i wanna have something to show inthere face that im not just the only one with this problem and i dont just want a new phone...
My Mytouch 3g 1.2 with cyanogen ran faster, better, and never gave me the issues this phone is giveing me.. its stupid and i dont believe this should be happening...
So please post lol thanks....
p.s.
I know i miss spelled im running late for work and typed in a rush sorry...
RE: Black Screens
It's your phone lagging.
Do you have Facebook or Twitter hooked into your phone.
It's probably updating statuses in the phone app, and that's why it's lagging. When it lags, it starts giving black screens. Happens a lot. If you want to stick with the phone, then some of the knowledgeable modders here can recommend some decent custom ROMs that get rid of much of the lag, and point you in the correct direction.
From what I've read FroYo doesn't fix this issue on Galaxy S phones, though some said the leaked 2.2.1 ROM for the i9k fixes much of it.
RE: Text Messages
T-Mobile's network is pretty bad, I've noticed. I get the failed text messages quite a bit as well.
RE: Shakes and stuff in other apps
See "RE: Black screens" The RFS file system is almost guaranteed to lag any application which accesses the forum, especially if they use a database.
90% of the people here have had the same issues. 80% of them run a custom ROM or Lag Fix, 5% of them are in denial, and 5% of them run such a slimmed down setup that the lag is rare and simply doesn't bother them.
Speaking of which. There are Lag Fixes and Custom ROMs (usually with Lag Fixes integrated in them) that can alleviate much of the Lag. YMMV, however.
HTH.
umm a user error? i wonder how you use your phone..
like when you download apps from the marketplace, do you at the same time to make calls? send texts? or other stuffs while downloading? orr are you multi tasking as lot? web, text, games ? do you even exit on apps ..hmm
and you've been a member since july when the vibrant launched, are you not making this story up? LOL im kidding.. just get a different phone i guess, not a vibrant..

Check this out, this may be what you need: Internal/External Sdcard Mounting Fix - for all 2.2 roms - *11/20/10*
the SAME EXACT ISSUES WITH ALL PHONES?
Here's what i did before, not to a vibrant, but my g2 when it had a bunch of problems.
After 6 replacements, tmobile told me that they can't trust me anymore. so for this time i went to their store and let them see the problems, they told me they hadn't seen it before (obviously) then i asked if i could TRY OUT another phone in front of them, i took out everything, and put it in the new phone, and same issues.
They told me something was wrong and they'd do something... they went to the back, same back after 10 minutes, and everything was fixed, but they wiped EVERYTHING ON MY PHONE, the sd card etc.

I read it.. do you realize that it's nnot hard to replace the phone on TMobile? Tmo might even offer him a different phone.. it's called customer service and it's not like he bricked the phone anyway.. even if you bricked it they'd still replace it.. are you that oblivious???
I only had my Vibrant running stock firmware for about 2mins so I do not know about your lag. I am using the latest PepperKake rom with the Voodoo lag fix. I do not have facebook or twitter running. Just my email and a PS3 trophy card. I have not seen any sort of lag or freeze.

N8ter was the most helpful with his first post. JL5 fixed alot of the "lag" issues I had, but the only lag I was experiencing was using my exchange (corporate) connector.
Best bet is to flash to JL5 or a custom rom, or if you dont wish to deal with that return the phone and tell TMO what for.

You told him to get another phone - which I interpret to mean a different phone, because another Vibrant won't fix his issues, obviously. I've gotten two replacements (both were BNIB basically from the factory, since they were backordered when I put the tickets in).
He's past the return period, so his only choice would be to get a different phone, and those aren't cheap.
Furthermore, carriers (T-Mobile included) are always willing to swap the phone out for a different model to save a contract, but they aren't so dumb that they will let any random user get a free upgrade just because they called in *****ing about phone problems and threatened to cancel their contract (when you ETF, they get their subsidy back).
I know what I'm talking about. I've ETF'd from two other carriers in the past 6 months (Sprint and AT&T, due to poor signal issues) and have had all 4.
You can roll your eyes all you want, miss thing who is obviously a fangirl.
Sorry eveyone i lost my password for a while lol... To update you all on this, i ended up going thru 6!!! vibrants all had the same issues.. i didnt wanna root it i loved it as it was but after argueing with tmo, and samsung i didnt get anywhere with them, they only offered to exchange for the charm, HEll no! ...They WOuldnt exchange it for anything else.. so i ended up canceling the contract. It was cheaper to cancel the contract then to buy another phone at full price like they wanted me to.. it was $400 to cancel the contract plus the month, for the family plan... had i purchased two phones the "mytouch 4g" which is what we tried to get, at full price it was running about 900 to almost 1200 for both phones... havent had any issues with the mytouch ... But whats funny is , they now have the same vibrant phone with 4g service and a front facing camera... could it be they knew the vibrant had issues? so went ahead and remade it /fixed the issues instead of a recall. I saw several ppl everytime i went out who had one and actually ASKED them if they had any issues like i was and YES they did...
Basically in a nut shell Eclair is ****. The phone is awesome . Flash a good Rom and everything will be fine.

[Q] Recovery with a broken track ball

Hey all,
Just a couple days ago, my track ball stopped working when I use it to scroll down. In recovery, you need to be able to scroll down to do anything. Is there a way to flash things and do nands without the track ball? I know there is Clockwork, but I don't trust it with the stories of bricking. If anything, all I need to do is be able to flash the flashback ROM so I can send it in and get a new phone.
Any remedies?
Thanks

It happened to me. I was trying to flashback to send it back...no trackball. I found that pushing on the phone with my thumb above the trackball enabled the trackball enough to flash the zip. Keep in mind I was sending the phone back to Verizon for the broken trackball, though, so I wasn't worried about breaking it further.

Thank you and thank you!
By the way, you probably should grab the recovery-RA-eris-v1.6.2-trackball-optional.img 1.7.1 version (it has all of the functionality of the "original" 1.6.2 Amon_RA; the first "trackball-not-required" version I built was based on the 1.6.2 source that actually omitted some of the menu options).
Cheers!
i have the trackball not working during recovery issue as well
I have found, and I am almost certain this will work for you, plugging your phone into your charger will get your trackball to work
If I don't have my cord to plug into the usb, I've used a paper clip to press against the top of the usb port towards the trackball and have found this to work as well
if you have any questions on the process please don't hesitate to contact me

Actually, most people find out about the problem, or it's more severe when a cord/charger is plugged in.

Does the problem worsen over time to the point at when it does it if it's not on the charger? Cuz mine's pretty bad on the charger.
I went through this as well. The various tricks to get it to work succeed on some phones and not others, but they're worth a try. In most cases the trackball will continue to deteriorate over time and mine got to the same point where I couldn't scroll down and therefore couldn't use RA to flash. But I needed to flash it back to stock so I could get a refurb from Verizon via my warranty. At that time, I don't think this RA that doesn't require a trackball was available. I asked about if there was and I couldn't find anything about it. Thought about trying to use the RA source and build a version myself but I just didn't have the time and lord knows, screwing that up might have really borked my phone for good, so I get it go. Now that RA without the trackball is out there, I'd use it if you can get that on your phone.
But there's another very easy solution. You can download ROM Manager from the market: ROM manager will let you flash ROMs without the trackball. It uses Clockwork Recovery for flashing and I was concerned at first about the stories of CR possibly bricking phones (in fact this not really a serious risk) or maybe making it harder to return the phone to unrooted stock or something else. But in fact, ROM manager uses Clockwork by only temporarily loading CR in memory, where you can use it to flash a ROM, and it does NOT replace RA! It leaves RA intact on your phone. If you reboot, RA is there. You can use ROM manager to flash any ROM and in my case I used it to flash the easy, return to stock zip that you can find here on the Eris forum. I brought it to the Verizon store and all I had to say was the trackball died and they traded me for a refurb.
BTW, this was a few months ago and there were several threads here with stories about people calling Verizon (not the stores) with tales of woe about their Eris and getting a free upgrade to Incredibles, Moto Droids, etc. if they were very nice about asking. This might have been a time when the inventory on the Eris was low. Anyway, I tried twice times and couldn't swing it - they only offered a refurb Eris. Found a local store with the Eris in stock and did it on the spot.
Now, if an Eris is out of warranty, then the best route is to replace the trackball. There are threads on XDA with all the step by step instructions you need. These are the same trackballs that are used in many of the Blackberrys and apparently those fail frequently and there are a LOT of options available on line for about $3-$5 via Amazon, etc. And hey, you can get them in kinds of whizzy colors ;-p
Hope this helps!
Good luck!

Moving from Captivate to SGSII

OK, so my SGSII will be here tomorrow and I'm not looking forward to moving all my crap from my Cappy to the new phone. I am only going to root the phone, for now, so I can use things like my paid versions of TiBU, Root Explorer and others. Should I root before I set anything up? I know not to restore anything system related, just apps and data. How do I migrate all my internet, e-mail and other settings?Do I input them manually? How do I know which apps from the Cappy will not run on the SGSII? I also have my Outlook contacts and calendar set up to sync via Hotmail's servers onto my phone (which works pretty well) because I don't use G-mail. I haven't flashed a ROM since March and am in no hurry to do so until I get more savvy with the new phone, but I don't want anything I transfer over to mess it up. Thanks.
Oh, and I see reference to an OGSGSII. Is that a different phone or just a designation used to distinguish it from the SGSIISR?
I came from a Cappy as well but couldn't tell how to bring things over as I just started fresh. Most of the apps should still work (aside from Voodoo sound). You don't need any lag fixes as this phone is already EXT4. For rooting there is a kernel swap method but if you are worried about keeping your warranty, then you should read up on the flash counter with yellow triangle warning for flashing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081
OGSGSII/OGSII= International Version (I9100)[Exynos Chipset]
ASGSII= At&t S2 (i777) [Exynos Chipset], think of it like Cappy (I897) and its international (I9000) very similar hardware.
Skyrocket= (i727) Similiar to Tmobiles S2 [Qualcomm Chipset] (very different hardware)
Welcome Miami_Son.
Great group of people in the SGSII forums.
When I got my phone, I gave the Captivate to my wife, and I set up the SGSII from scratch, but I did use many of my Tibu application backups to get the data continuity for those apps. The cappy is still running Andromeda3 btw.
I would at least root and install a custom kernel. I'd suggest Entropy512's daily driver. Do NOT use rom manager, as it does not play well with the SGSII, so you need the custom kernel for, at a minimum, ClockworkMod Recovery. Entropy's kernel is very stable and improves battery life significantly among other things. And many (most?) of the custom roms use his kernel.
Also, learn about the flash counter and decide if it makes any difference to you. I have a couple of guiudes with info.
Enjoy your stay!
Thanks, guys, that cleared it up. I do like having CWM and the extended power menu on my Cappy, so I'll look into the kernel mod. Having had my Cappy replaced 3 times I am concerned about warranty issues. Does any change in the counter void the warranty? Would just a kernal flash change the counter? Can it be changed back? I've seen lots of good said about Entropy's mods and I was already leaning that way. I was all set to get the SR until I posted in here and saw how much dev support there is for the SGSII compared to the SR. Coming from the Cappy I think I'll be very happy with this phone. If the GPS works I know I will. Aside from some random sluggishness and the sketchy GPS, the Cappy has been a great phone, especially on A3. Will be sorry to see it go. Would still be using it except for the speaker starting to go and an occasional unexplained lockup. Thanks again for the warm welcome and all the help.

Any time you use download mode the counter will go up, it is supposed to void your warranty but a few people confirmed that AT&T won't/doesn't know how to check it. The counter itself can only be reset with a JIG (same one as cappy). Just a kernal swap in my link or creepy's sig won't set it off if done properly

GPS is far better I can get a lock in about 5-8 sec (warm) outside on a clear day with excellent tracking.
Welcome miama_son
The cappy was a better than average phone with some proiblems out of the box, but a very good phone with custom firmware and mods.
The SGSII is an awesome phone out of the box, and even better with the work of the great devs here.
Samsung learned their lesson from the cappy gps debacle. This phone has one of the best gps chips available in a phone, and most agree that it's gps is about as good as it gets on a phone platform.
As far as the counter, theoretically it voids the warranty, but in practice, it's questionable whether someone at the store would even look. When you flash a custom kernel with Odin3 or Heimdall from your pc, the counter is incremented and you will also get an I9100 boot screen with a yellow warning triangle. It's the warning triangle and boot screen that is more of a problem, but both the counter and boot screen can be cleared with a jig. You can read more info in my guides, linked in my signature.
after coming from my captivate, I started from scratch with all my apps. Its just left me feeling more comfortable knowing all apps were installed fresh.

Not every time you use download mode - it only triggers if you flash a custom kernel with download mode.
Flashing system images and Samsung official kernels with download mode does not trip the counter or the "custom firmware" warning screen.
Flashing custom kernels from the phone (CWM, dd on a rooted device, etc.) do not trip the custom binary warning/counter.
I came from a Captivate as well, and started from scratch. Loving the GPS lock-on compared to the Captivate, but I honestly prefer saving the battery and typing in directions from where I'm at. ^^
Not sure about the weird lock up, but since my brother got a Captivate Glide, I've been bouncing back between the S2 forums and Captivate. I think they just found a fix for the speaker problem that doesn't involve pushing on to the speaker (that really annoyed me with my alarm going out ;.
Anyway, I tripped the counter and I don't really mind. But from what I read a jig will do the trick if you keep the original bootloaders I believe. So...just keep away from flashing those! :3 Not 100% on that, but just in case. ^^ Nice to meet you and enjoy your S2!
FedEx tracking says "out for delivery." Can't wait!!!
Also came from the Captivate....your gonna like your new SGS II phone!
Go Fins!

You'll see me posting in here soon. I ordered the GS2 yesterday. Should be here around Wednesday.
My Cappy is still going strong. Other than the smallest amount of burn-in on the notification bar area, it's in (almost) immaculate condition. It was a hard decision to get locked in for another 2 year contract, but I was too much of a geek to pass up the 1¢ price tag. lol
I too came from the Cappy. You may have seen me post there a time or two. As you know, the GSII is a far superior phone to the cappy and now that we have some of the best devs here, it's even better. If you have the jig from the cappy, you may not need to worry about the flash counter. It's been hit or miss on whether the same one works on the GSII as well. It's something you can try when it arrives. Apparently the GSII is more picky as to the ohm of the resistor. I don't have a jig but if you look at the first thread in this forum, you'll see how to do everything without tripping the counter. I followed that thread and am good as far as ATT goes. The GSII also seems to be less "clay" prone, although I never had a probolem with my cappy. Battery life is MASSIVELY better, even on the stock ROM unrooted. I'd highly suggest better battery stats to find any offending drainers. Also know that the buttons in CWM have changed until you flash a kernel that switches them back to the "known" way. I think it's the home button that you hit to "confirm" your choice, NOT the power button. I forgot when it changed back to the power button but mine is just like the cappy now.

Can I ask where you got it for $0.01? I have a friend looking to switch to AT&T from Verizon and get the AGSII but he's much less interested at the $200 price point as he is at the $0.01 price point.
Keep in mind it's a REFERB, but I ordered mine right off of the AT&T web site.
I just came in to edit my post to say I saw that it was Refurb. I will let my buddy know about it, not sure how he'll react to a Refurb but he loves my phone so maybe he'll be able to get past it.
Thank you!
I've bought one refurb from att online (Nokia e71x), had to replace it once withing the 30 days (a button fell off of the keyboard) and the replacement referb lasted two plus years.
Rumor has it that the internet is thee best way to buy referbs from att. Your friends mileage may very, of course.
Came from the Captivate too. You will love this phone!
Some great roms too. Was running UnNamed but using MIUI now.

Walmart has it for $100 on contract.

is the beta cm7 stable enough to be used frequently?

So currently I am running liberty3, and I don't know if it is the rom or not, but my phone has been overheating, freezing, and just being really god damn slow. It has been like this for a while now, I have even throw my phone out of frustration(because eclipse was the same way) and I have no what to do.
I am debating to just flash cm7, but heard it is still in beta, and I was wondering if people are using it even though there are bugs.
Really frustrated at the moment would appreciate some info...(1 more year on this contract before I can get rid of this POS...=/)
CM7 is very stable. As for it being "beta" cyanogen won't support it so until DZK figures a way to get around the bootloader it will keep the "beta" label.
Regarding the problems your having with your phone it sounds like it could be just that, problems with the phone, not the ROM. Eclipse and CM7 are the two most stable ROM's we have available and should not be the source of the kind of problems you describe.
And lastly remember CM7 runs on 2.3.4, it will give you fits if you try flashing it on 2.3.5.
Sent from my MB870 using Tapatalk 2
CM7 is quicker and more stable than any of the blur-based roms ever were on my phone, and all of them had a really irritating issue with bluetooth volume that CM7 fixed. I've been running on the same flash of beta 1 since January.
thanks for the replies guys, guess ill just flash cm7, and if I still have the same problems I can go talk to a verizon rep and see if I can get a replacement or somthing =/
this is actually making me laugh the stupid **** it's doing right now, I press play on a song, and the screen starts distorting, i exit and 90 seconds later the song starts playing, but then it pauses and the phone gets hot all of a sudden
how do you manage to **** up a phone this badly I just don't understand(I have owned this since 2011 may, it can't be a phone problem it just started happening 2-3 months ago)
Personally i hate people like you.... Why the hell should verizon send you a replacement for something youve ruined by throwing at a wall or across a room... Cm7 works fine but nothing will change the fact that abusing your electronics is your problem... You cant treat tech like that and expect it to keep working

Oh please. The droid x2 is one of the WORST developed android phones out right now. Not only that, the issues I have had with it came LONG before I actually "threw" it. Obviously I didn't baseball throw it into a concrete wall, but it wasn't even close enough to do damage. Verizon should send me a replacement because motorola has created a pretty pathetic excuse for a phone, or because I received a defective phone. Like I said, these issues have been going for FOREVER, and this phone in general has had issues since its release.
The phone isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. You would think that we got a brick in A box. But cm7 is very stable and works well for DD.

I agree that the Droid X2 isnt as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Any problems you have is either a defective phone or you flashed something the wrong way. Almost everyone who have these ROMs on their phones have no problems. So instead of blaming the phone and calling it crap, let us help you fix it.
First of all, as was mentioned already, CM7 and Eclipse are two of the most stable ROMs for this phone. Liberty was just a quick port and has not had any updates since its release. Honestly, I dont know why people still use it. The problem with Eclipse is that it is on a different kernel than every other ROM we have. So if you went from liberty to eclipse without changing the kernel to 2.3.5 first, you will experience problems. Did you install Eclipse by using the 2.3.5 SBF file first?
Or if you want the best of both world's I have eclipse 1.3. It runs on 2.3.4 kernel. These phones do get hot. What do you mean by overheat? Does it shut down or just feel hot?

Sounds like luck of the draw to me. I for one do my very best not to abuse electronics because they are 1) fragile and 2) expensive to buy/repair. Keeping that in mind, I did, ONE TIME, get blackout drunk and from what I'm told, chucked my X2 at someone's head and then they stomped on it, screen facing up. Absolutely no physical damage at all. That however is very, very, very rare.
Generally in my personal experience, Motorola makes some solid phones. I've put the Droid X, X2, Droid 3 and the new RAZR through hell and they all held up on performance after being dropped, kicked and being tossed onto asphalt and concrete. The only one I actually got the break with a reasonable amount of force was the Droid 3.
I can also tell you that no two phones are created equally, ever. Why do you think every single person who owns a Nexus isn't currently on the same ROM/kernel combo? What is fast, smooth & has good battery for me might be choppy and fast to discharge for someone else. Just because your phone doesn't act how it should doesn't mean its the ROM. You could have gotten a lemon (it happens) or maybe you just damaged internals when you chucked it. Doesn't matter if you didn't throw it like a baseball. All you need to do is hit the right part with the right amount of force. That's all it takes.
Hell when I got Verizon to exchange my X2, they sent me a Stratosphere. The same day I got the phone I put it on silent and went to bed. Some asshole called me at 2:30am that night. I did not answer it. instead, I rolled back over and went to bed. The phone vibrated off of my nightstand. It fell all of about 2.5 feet onto my BED then another 5 or so inches onto my carpeted floor. The screen was completely cracked and totally 100% unresponsive. There absolutely is no minimum requirement for force or distance needed to break your phone. Simple as that.
I can relate to you in the sense that I went through a phase where I hated the X2 as well, so I'm not trying to bash you. Keep that in mind . Also keep in mind that ICS wasn't even out yet. In fact CM9 wasn't much more than a rumor. The only ROMs I had to chose from were Molten & Liberty (both unsupported), Eclipse and CM7. I guess MIUI was out already, but it was so far down in the dev forum I didn't even know it existed months after I got the phone. Now you guys have ports for Paranoid Android and AOKP? Come on man. If I'd known they were coming I would have never left and got a Stratosphere.
Not to mention that the famous X2 developer, Dragonzkiller, is not only working on kexec for your phone, he's making progress with it. If he happens to get it working and you could load any kernels you wanted that would open up development around here and you would see a lot more, fully functional ROMs. It isn't so bad. When dzk gets kexec working you will have a great phone in terms of specs and ROMs, man.
You think a locked bootloader is bad?? Haha at least you have ROMs besides stock. My stratosphere? Sure the BL wasn't locked, but the radio interface layer was. In case you didn't know, ROMs like cyanogen, aokp, paranoid android, miui, eclipse, etc. use custom RILs. What this means is that the less than 7 month old 4g phone I got as a replacement for my X2 had much less going on for it than your phone. We had a grand total of TWO ROMs and they were both based off of stock. Just mostly theme changes. Plus only 1 kernel that would let us over clock. Barely.
To answer your first question, yes. Dragonzkiller's release of cyanogen mod 7 is stable enough to be used as a daily driver for your X2. I used it as my daily ROM for about 99% of the time I owned the phone. The other 1% was me trying other ROMs. Generally in CM7, everything works. The only issue I had (from memory) was the WiFi sleep issue. However, another one of the talented X2 developers released a new build.prop mash up which helped. It didn't keep WiFi from disconnecting when the phone slept for long periods of time, but it did reconnect it before I had a chance to get a "No Data" error message.
So you're stuck with the X2 for another year. So what? I don't see what *****ing about it here will do you. What do you want us to say? You don't like the phone? Sorry.. We can't change that for you. If you had posted this topic in any other phones forum, they would have flamed the living sh*t out of you by now lol. So that's another plus. You're a part of the best forum on XDA. Hands down.. If you have any issues with your phone... something isn't working, you soft bricked it, you flashed cm7 over 2.3.5 and you don't know what to do, etc., there will be someone here 24/7 to KINDLY assist you and get you back up and running again. Why do you think all of us who got Dinc2's or GNex's still come around here? Great community with kind, helpful people. I dare you to go to another forum and post a noob "help me" thread somewhere and watch how many hateful, unhelpful, "search next time noob, there's stickies for a reason" replies you get. I missed the X2 so much when I was stuck on my Stratosphere. You think your phone lags? Try going from a dual core to a single core. Hahahahaha, THEN come talk to me about lag. XD.
The best I can do for you is say call Verizon and tell them you're having issues with the phone. As long as it's not visibly noticeable that you damaged it, go through tech supports steps and have them replace it with another X2 and give these ROMs another go. I would have been pissed if I had year to go on stock motoblur, but luckily I had cm7 to make things okay.
And hey, maybe you can get it exchanged. Who knows? Quite a few of us did. Just be careful as to what phone you accept. They sold the Strat to me like it was a brand new, top of the line phone. I stupidly accepted it right away, just happy to get off of the X2 only to realize I screwed myself. I pretty much had to give Verizon my left nut to get this GNex, and that was my favorite one.
Besides "sorry for the long post" - that's all i have to say. Good luck.

Thanks for the long reply, I realize what I did/posted what a bit childish (I am 20 years old, I shouldn't be crying over stuff like this) but I really have never been so frustrated with a piece of technology in my life, even my moto razr that I had years ago functioned better!
I guess my only plan is to go to verizon to get it exchanged, only thing is I am not sure how to approach them with a rooted phone. Do I unroot it and then go in to the store, or do I just tell them I rooted it...Plus I have had the phone for a year, so I am not sure how they will respond to that.

If you are going to take your phone into Verizon, follow these instructions to get your phone back to stock. This will remove root and make it like you just bought your phone. Who knows, maybe it will fix the problems you have as well. Try it out and if your issues continue, take it in.

Basically you would need to SBF your phone. SBF stands for system boot file, I believe. It is the complete stock factory image for your phone. That plus a data wipe/factory reset and they will have no idea you ever rooted it.
As for having it for a year, you may run into a problem there. Motorola might cover the X2 for two years, I'm not sure. Your warranty could be expired. You have to call Verizon to know for sure. If it's not expired just tell them that you're having whatever issues. They will run you through some steps, probably a data wipe, amongst other things. You tell them that no, none of the steps were able to fix the problems you are currently facing. At this point, if the phone is still under warranty they will go ahead and replace it for you. If not they will tell you to go through insurance, if you have it.
If not you're either going to have to pay for another phone off contract from a third party or stick with the one you have now.
If you still have warranty and really want to get a different phone, just tell them that you did plenty of research independently online and it would seem that no amount of X2s will fix the problems you have. That they seem to be due to poor coding at Motorola's end. That's what I did. Just remember to look up the phone they offer you as a replacement so you don't get burned like me. Not just the specs, but here on xda and rootzwiki as well. Make sure there's a development forum for it with plenty of selections for ROMs and kernels before you make your choice.
I was able to not only get rid of my X2 like that, but the Stratosphere as well. The one I had less than a month hahaha. If you're covered by warranty give it a shot.
P.S. The most frustrated I have ever been with a piece of electronics? My PlayStation 2 slim. I had a few of them, but there was one in particular that pissed me off. It slowly but surely stopped reading my discs. 1 at a time. It would read a game, I'd go to bed and the next day it wouldn't read that game anymore. It could play other games, but not that one. It got progressively worse until the only disc of any format it would read was SOCOM: Combined Assault. Wasn't too bad, it'd give me trouble every now and then, but it was the only disc it would play for months. Socom also happened to be my favorite game at the time and I played it all the time with my cousins and friends from school. We were all in a clan and we ran that game. Anyways I was with a bunch of guys one day and we were in the middle of a clan war. Ladder match. We made it all the way to the top, and my PS2 stopped reading socom. I tried frantically to get it working again, but it was useless. The laser finally crapped out. In a blind rage knowing the PS2 just cost us our biggest clan war ever, I threw it out of my second story window. I then proceeded to go outside with a hammer and utterly destroy it.
I had just gotten a job and was working, so I had to buy a new one. Lesson learned. Those *****es were expensive lol. Never did anything like that again.

Getting frustrated is very easy to do and really don't help much. Want some senseless humor, read a few pages back in Off Topic and read my rants. I was ready to trash my new Gnex.
Just take a breather and ask for a hand. We are all like one big dysfunctional family. I've yet to see anyone be neglected that has needed help.

To this day I still don't know. Maybe user error, but I think it is tempermental. I literally had to wipe the hell out of it before I could flash the first rom. At one point I wiped everything so many times, I really thought it was over. But all of a sudden it decided to work and hasn't missed a beat since. Now, I don't wipe anything on it anymore. It runs like a sewing machine.
CM7 is still rockin' on 2 of the X2's that I loaded and themed out.

As far as overheating is concerned you may want to look at adobe flash. Using the latest version caused issues for me and I gave had to revert back to a previous version. As others have mentioned going with CM7 or eclipse will make a huge difference. I have had 3 other smartphones with vzw and this was the best one so far.

Never did anything like that again.

ah ok, yeah I know how to SBF, so I will most likely do that and go to the verizon store to see what's up
if they offer me a replacement phone, I guess ill just ask them to give me a few days to make a decision so I can do research and find out if I am getting ripped off or not
thanks for all the replies guys, I know I come off as kind of an ass(ill be honest im pretty douchey) but this phone has transformed me into something T_T
cm7 is a good rom. Fast too! Since it is still based on the 2.3.4 kernel it has the orientation sensor bug too though.

GS4 got *extremely* hot overnight

Hey everyone. I just bought a Galaxy S4 a couple days ago, and have had no problems with it until this morning. I had it plugged in, and when I woke up, it was extremely hot to the touch, burningly so, and had some weird battery warning of some sort on the screen. I didn't know what else do do, so I immediately unplugged it and took the battery out. Coming from using an HTC Thunderbolt, I've never had a phone get this hot. My hands even still hurt from handling the phone, and now I'm really concerned that there is a problem with it. It's probably worth mentioning that I did root it, but I did nothing else that would cause it to do something like this. I didn't overclock it, I didn't install a custom recovery, and I didn't install any custom ROMs. Besides having root access, the phone is in a stock state as if I just took it out of the box. I haven't turned it on yet as I'm letting it cool off right now, but I really want to know what the heck happened here.
Thanks for any help.
You're not the first person. Hm I want to buy this phone too

Yeah, to my surprise I noticed one of the moderators moved a similar thread from someone over to this section while I was in the middle of posting mine. I wish I would have been able to see it before making mine, but oh well. At least I'm glad it's nothing I did, but I'm both concerned about the heat killing the battery as well as this happening over and over again.
I haven't had this issue at all. I'm rooted and running cwm recovery, but otherwise stock. I also froze several apps (only bloat that was allowed to be disabled natively, so far).
In general, if I were you, I would contact Samsung or Verizon. It may be a defective battery or a defective phone.

I suppose I could bring it back; I do have about 12 more days to return it if I need to. Of course, I'd really rather not, but if everyone here thinks that's the best course of action here, then I suppose I should. Of course, there is the whole I rooted it thing, so yeah.

Don't worry about root. Use SuperSu's unroot feature before returning it. And a factory reset. They'll never know.
Or, if you're really paranoid, use the stock no root odin image and flash it clean.
Get the battery error message to repeat then bring it in with it showing or take a picture of it. A good store will hand you a new one on the spot. They just need to have a documented reason.
Yeah pretty much
I think what I'll do is test the battery life and see if it was damaged at all first. If there's nothing to worry about there, I could just pretend it never happened. Of course, if it decides to go supernova on me again, I'll just unroot it and bring it back. Thanks for the replies guys.
Update:
Considering my battery went down by 8% in just a half hour, I think I can safely consider my battery to be fried. This is just wonderful...
