Hey everyone. I just bought a Galaxy S4 a couple days ago, and have had no problems with it until this morning. I had it plugged in, and when I woke up, it was extremely hot to the touch, burningly so, and had some weird battery warning of some sort on the screen. I didn't know what else do do, so I immediately unplugged it and took the battery out. Coming from using an HTC Thunderbolt, I've never had a phone get this hot. My hands even still hurt from handling the phone, and now I'm really concerned that there is a problem with it. It's probably worth mentioning that I did root it, but I did nothing else that would cause it to do something like this. I didn't overclock it, I didn't install a custom recovery, and I didn't install any custom ROMs. Besides having root access, the phone is in a stock state as if I just took it out of the box. I haven't turned it on yet as I'm letting it cool off right now, but I really want to know what the heck happened here.
Thanks for any help.
You're not the first person. Hm I want to buy this phone too

Yeah, to my surprise I noticed one of the moderators moved a similar thread from someone over to this section while I was in the middle of posting mine. I wish I would have been able to see it before making mine, but oh well. At least I'm glad it's nothing I did, but I'm both concerned about the heat killing the battery as well as this happening over and over again.
I haven't had this issue at all. I'm rooted and running cwm recovery, but otherwise stock. I also froze several apps (only bloat that was allowed to be disabled natively, so far).
In general, if I were you, I would contact Samsung or Verizon. It may be a defective battery or a defective phone.

I suppose I could bring it back; I do have about 12 more days to return it if I need to. Of course, I'd really rather not, but if everyone here thinks that's the best course of action here, then I suppose I should. Of course, there is the whole I rooted it thing, so yeah.

Don't worry about root. Use SuperSu's unroot feature before returning it. And a factory reset. They'll never know.
Or, if you're really paranoid, use the stock no root odin image and flash it clean.
Get the battery error message to repeat then bring it in with it showing or take a picture of it. A good store will hand you a new one on the spot. They just need to have a documented reason.
Yeah pretty much
I think what I'll do is test the battery life and see if it was damaged at all first. If there's nothing to worry about there, I could just pretend it never happened. Of course, if it decides to go supernova on me again, I'll just unroot it and bring it back. Thanks for the replies guys.
Update:
Considering my battery went down by 8% in just a half hour, I think I can safely consider my battery to be fried. This is just wonderful...

are there any apps that I MUST have (aside from launcher pro and a new keyboard)
any roms that I should flash? (I am staying away from froyo because of lack of support for the headphone jack and no jit (afaik that's why froyo is so much faster than eclair) and im in no rush to get flash)
any other tips? (yes I looked at the tips post. so far i have installed that screenshot taking tool, gotten the adblocker and installed titanium backup)
thanks guys!
ps. what's the word on cyanogenmod 6? when is it slated to release?
again thanks for all your help, I'm loving my new vibrant.

The word on Cyanogen is it's in the works.

6.1 is the current work-in-progress and is coming together nicely. There’s a few new features like touch-to-focus in the camcorder, dismiss notifications by swiping, kernel updates for most devices, and improved performance. There will also be support for a few new devices- Acer Liquid, HTC Wildfire and Samsung Vibrant. My eye is also on the new HTC phones that are about to get released like the G2.

one last question: are the lag fixes worth doing? what's the risk? and most roms tell you to uninstall them before flashing, how easy is this to do? and what roms can be "lagfixed?" what is the best way to do a lagfix?
Well, I suggest playing around with your phone. If you notice it's slow, and not as fast, go ahead and install it. Also, download Quadrant Standard. Test it. If your score is 1100-1500, go ahead and install the lagfix.
To install it, this is what I do. I am not quite sure if this is best way, but it works for me.
Remember, I am not responsible for what you do to your phone.
Step 1: Download RyanZA's lagfix from the market. (search "lagfix")
Step 2: Install EXT tools from the app.
Step 3: Apply Lagfix.
If you ever want to uninstall the lagfix, go to the app and do it from there.
ROMs that work with the lagfix as I know:
Vibrant Hybrid
Frankin-Twiz.
I also recommend installing the Captivates camera. It's a 1000x better. You can look that up in the tips thread.
I'm running the Voodoo lag fix on Bionix 1.3. The phone absolutely flies and the battery life is excellent. I'm also pretty sure that you can remove the lag fix by simply placing a named folder inside of the voodoo folder and rebooting, so it should be pretty easy.
I don't always complain, but when I do, I #BlameWes
Oh, also, here's another tip:
If your battery is horrible, let it drain ALL THE WAY, make sure it turns off. Then charge it to 100%. This restarts the cycle, I do this twice a month.
thanks!!!!!
You've got choices...
I'm also running 1.3 Bionix, but with the KingKlick kernel and no lag fix. It might not "fly" like the voodoo lag fix version, but it is quick enough and the battery life is amazing. Been using the phone unplugged for about 8 hours with some calls, texts, and work-related emails and I still have 79% of battery.
Tried all of the 2.1 Roms so far and played with them for a few days each, but have finally settled in with the above.
Whatever you do, give it a few days of regular use before you turn to the next one. And be careful to read the OP's instructions or you'll end up getting all crazy and wanting to throw your phone against a wall cause it bricked...

-alright friend. Keep at it and follow the thread on using Odin to get it back. I've gone back to Odin at least 3-4 times and I know a bunch of folks here have visited it more times than they care to admit.
If you can do it after a good nights sleep, it's probably best cause otherwise you get easily frustrated and really do want to throw it against a wall -- but don't.
You'll recover it - just keep at it. Good luck and hope to hear back that you got it going.

thanks man. i can't even get to the download screen. it ether goes to the battery screen or the vibrant screen depending on which method i use.
my cousin has the same phone, but she bought it through tmobile (not ebay like me) and has a warranty and insurance. should i ask her to get it replace? or will i be able to unbrick?
i should add i can't even get adb going.
would i be able to buy one off contract and return it? wheres a good place to do this?
these phones are almost unbrickable, if you get the vibrant screen you should be able to unbrick it....also the phone is less then a year old so it should have a warranty if it comes down to that.
Keep at it, try these few ideas

--If you got it from eBay, try and see if either the seller is willing to fix or look into Square Trade Warranties. I have a couple of their warranties on phones and ipods and they have always come through for me when the items I get need repair. Also, check into Craigslist locally and see if there is anyone that does phone repair. I have a guy in CA, near where I live that has fixed my electronics before and I found him on Craigslist.
-keep trying man. don't give up.
it's all been sorted out. i have a friend at costco who does returns
thanks for all the help though. I'll make sure read instructions more clearly (although it wasn't entirely my fault, the instructions said don't do a nadroid backup, not don't do a nandroid restore, which is what i did. and guess what? my new vibrant isn't locked! i can get into recovery using the buttons)
Hey guys, I came had the HTC Sensation, and I broke it VERY bad, and T-Mobile refused to give me a new one, so I bought the Amaze 4G on Amazon.
The phone worked okay for the first week, and about 10 days after I had it, it started to randomly freeze and I would have to lock and unlock the screen for it to work again.
Wasn't a big deal at first. It was almost as if the processor wasn't getting enough voltage for example, on my Sensation if I undervolted it too much it would freeze up and I would need to pull the battery.
Not as big of a deal though, but it is SO ANNOYING when trying to text or type something and having to go through the whole process.
But then the device was getting very slow when I had it on the charger, so I argued with Amazon to take it back and they said I would have to contact the private dealer.
I had no luck with the dealer, so I basically got screwed over out of 500 bucks.
BUT... I think the problem is fixable...
Correct me if I'm wrong, (and I probably am), I am NEARLY 100% positive this is a battery issue or a processor issue.
And maybe one of you phone geniuses will be able to help me out (You guys never dissapoint)
But before I drop 15 dollars on a battery, I want to know if one of you have had experience with a problem like this. Even after rooting, wiping, installing countless roms and apps, I have had no luck at all.
Did you buy it used?

Yea it was "Certified Refurbished" by the company, but they said that there was no way to prove it was like that when it left their shop, so basically I got screwed out of everything. I tried contacting HTC also and they said a standard repair could range up to 100 dollars, and I really don't want to spend that unless I have to, but I am almost positive it's the battery that doesn't give the phone enough power. I will take it up to T-Mobile and see if they have a tester battery I could use. Very weird problems though, it makes me wonder if it's more than the battery.

I think we need more info before we can think of possible reasons for the problem.
Are you rooted?
What software version are you using?
Did you do the factory reset?
What apps are running background?
Did you try different sd card?
Did you get logs (logcat, etc.)
etc. etc.
It may be purely hardware issue like you say, but as you say, software can cause similar problems, too. Especially, if you can remedy the problem by going in to the lockscreen and back, I think it is software related.
EDIT: Wait a minute! You're the same guy asking about s-off'ing the phone with ICS leak, aren't you? Probably you didn't flash the original ICS RUU before flashing a custom ROM? Mismatched firmware can cause tons of problems and there's no easy solution to it rather than to flash the firmware. But then, if you're not s-off'ed, you can't flash firmware to begin with. What a mess you are in.
Also if you think it's a battery problem plug the thing in problem still there not the battery. It will get full power plugged in even with a bad battery.

Hi, uh I started another thread on making sure things got backed up. Which I did properly and everything was good. So today I haven't done anythign and was waiting for the new slim rom to make it's debute hopefully this week sometime as that is the one that appeals to me the most. Anyways, today my phone just got super hot, far hotter than before and it decided to die on me...I think. it shut off and I haven't been able to turn it on. Could this be a side effect of installing twrp/unlocking the bootloader/rooting? Or would it be a defective unit? One concern I had was getting a defective unit so i waited out my 30 days before even considering doing all this. So yea my 30 days from att is up. Would there possibly be a way to get a new phone from att or does anyone have any tricks on getting it back online? I personally think it was an overheating issue, but my phone is now cooled down.
So i went to the att store and of course they won't do anything. They told me to call some number they gave me. If I return it will they know it was boot unlocked and rooted? I can't turn it on at all. Using a power source or connecting to my computer nor my car charger...

Ok, so, im not sure if by return you mean, return for an exchange or simply a return as ATT will probably only send you a reman unit for yours and not allow an actual return. If you havent called them yet, i would recommend it. I have dealt with them many times in the past and one thing that has always shocked me is that they never have asked me about, or even commented on, how rooting or unlocking prevents them from exchanging it. Even during the disclaimer, they have never once said that if the device has been modified they wont allow the exchange.
I say all of this because should they not mention anything like that, and you send it back, im fairly sure you can claim you didnt know and werent told, and they will take care of it. Also, i say this because i personally sent back 3 bricked GS2s and an lg nitro as defective and got my reman units and every single one of them were rooted and such. So, i would feel safe. As long as they dont ask, and you dont lie to them, then there shouldnt be an issue. I wouldnt lie to them, i just dont mention it. AGAIN DO NOT lie to them or attempt to decieve them, i would never encourage that, but if its something they dont ask about, then, it, in my opinion, is not something that they are too concerned with.

Okay, thanks for the response. Sorry I was in a bit of a panic when I wrote that. But I have called ATT and they didn't ask me or mention in any disclaimer that if it's rooted or unlocked it won't qualify. I didn't mention it and so that does make me feel a lot better. Hasn't been physically damaged or come in contact with water so i'm pretty sure I'm safe. Thanks again.

They may or may not check when you return the phone. I returned my S3 a few months ago in exchange for a different phone but I forgot to unroot it and uninstall Superuser. The representative at AT&T didn't even turn the phone on. I didn't have anything to hide though, if they told me I couldn't return it because it was rooted then I would have sold it and purchased something else. I think the manufacturer is the one to worry about with these things. LG would definitely know if it were unlocked and they would be able to determine if rooting and unlocking the phone caused the problems you described.

Well if they can turn it on I will gladly take it back due to them not accepting. I couldn't turn it on by anymeans, even plugging it in there is no lights to signifying it is receiving power. But i heard this phone had overheating issues in the first wave (or two) so it's probably for the best to get a new one. They are currently mailing me a new one and so I should receive it next week sometime hopefully.

im in the same boat as you... completely dead phone. But I did open it to see of the battery pull would work. Do you think that theyll check and refuse my warranty because I opened it? the phone on the outside is NEW. Btw do you have a contract/account with ATT? I bought mine off ebay and used it on tmo...
I have the exact same problem! Totally dead phone that the charging light won't even turn on for. Unfortunately there is a small crack in the bottom left of the phone that was caused months prior so ATT wont give me a new one...
send it for repairs! I had rooted and unlocked mine so ATT didnt cover my warranty, but I only paid 50 bucks for the repairs and now I have my phone back!
just got this, new phone. I've been reviewing all its features, but it's started acting strange. when I plug in to charge, it no longer responds. the only way I got it to power on is after I remove/re-insert battery. I realize different phones will have different functions/settings, but my last phone never had these type of issues. I'm just at a loss as to what's going on. I have another week to return this phone, if it won't operate properly. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. I have the unlocked/no carrier logo, International I9300 version. It's running Android 4.1.1, which is what came installed.

Hi I will save you alot of trouble here... Return the phone...Your phone should not be doing this especially a new one even if you can fix this it is something that is not normal and can spell trouble elsewhere with your phone.
I would recommend returning and getting another one
+1 return it and go for new one. Why to bother when return is an option.
hardware problem..just return it
turns off, won't power on, after/while charging

I've done a factory reset & it seems 2 b responding, as it should. I'm hoping it means that just an app, I'd installed, was causing the issue. If not, I've alerted the seller that I'd be returning/exchanging. Does this type of thing tend 2 happen, very often?
Update: OK, it's been over 12 hrs. since I did the factory reset. I've not done anything else, except enter my local settings. I've not logged in 2 any pre-installed apps, either. So far, it's still working fine. Now, should I assume this DID have something 2 do w/an app or what? I'm really trying 2 exhaust all possibilities b4 returning, as this can only be returned, if there IS something actually defective.
Please advise, again.
Thx,

No, only when the user corrupts the firmware/data.

There is no way to really understand what's going on without testing but that takes time and that is something you haven't got seeing as you need to return the phone within a week..
You could install one app at a time test then uninstall that app and move on to the next app to test but that is very time consuming depending on how many apps you had installed. (And it might not even be that what is causing the problem)
You could flash a new stock firmware and test but again that is time consuming plus you don't want to be doing that if you are returning the phone.
I can only tell you what I would do and that is to return it..The reason why I say that is because not having your phone respond when you plug into a charger would be a big issue for me especially on a new phone and like i said in my first post this could be signs of trouble elsewhere.
I would probably ask myself this question... maybe it was just a app or maybe it's something worse "can i take the risk" Phones cost alot of money and I think you should expect them to work without any problems when first purchased.

:good:Well, as it turns out, it must be a serious issue w/phone. I've still not logged in/installed any other apps & it's starting do it all, again. So, back it will go. As u said, it's expensive! I really appreciate ur assistance.
Okay so I was browsing my phone and happened to run across the System state saying "Modified"
The issue I am having is I have never even downloaded a rooting app. The only thing close to root I have used is called Helium, which does not require root, but it can backup/restore apps+data.
I am slightly worried that if I have to send my phone in for some reason they will see this and say I have messed with the system, although I have not in the first place.
Has anyone else encountered this random issue? Other than that this phone is quite a good phone and I'm pleased with it greatly.

Did you fully read his post before replying? I suppose my question is as rhetorical as yours...
My interpretation was that he has not installed one rooting app. One was left to assume he had rooted the phone or did not have a rooted phone which was the basis of my question. And yes I did read his post to answer your question. I would not leave you to assume I did from my response.

no big deal that it says that. move along
If you go to the Verizon store and look at the G3's they have on display, they all say "modified" instead of "official" however when I received my phone it said "official" until I rooted it.

Just flash it back to stock if you have any issues. May as well root now anyway. G3 tweak box is amazing!
Sorry for late reply, at work so hard to get on atm.
I have not touched a single rooting app to this phone since I bought it new the day they came out. I have thought about rooting it, but I am touchy when it comes to phones that are in warrenty.
Although I might just say heck with it and actually root it anyways since it's saying modified, my main concern was why it was already saying it was modified when I hadn't touched it yet. I have experience rooting/restoring phones/tablets ever since the mesmerize/desire/fascinate ages so it shouldn't be too hard
I doubt this has anything to do with it, but when it turns on from a restart/shutdown one of the verizon apps "vzrwsservice" or something like that says it has crashed and then goes away until i restart again.
Thanks for you replies though, if someone does come up with a phone that isn't rooted but says modified, I'd be interested to know so that we can figure what's causing this.
My unrooted Verizon g3 does not say modified. It says official.

Hypothetical.... lets say someone bought it, played with it and rooted it or botched a root and returned it. try root checker in app store. just saying. makes more sense then someone snuck in your bedroom and took it and rooted while you were sleeping and returned it.
Another hypothetical...
Could it switch to "modified" if one were not rooted but had disabled some of the bloat? Just a thought.

As of now, I cannot tell what it was to change it to modified, I went ahead and tried a reset through the settings and it kept the modified status, did a flash restore and it finally got rid of the modified and is now stating Official.
(To note that when it was in download mode it also stated modified before I flashed it with the ToT file.)
I did also find the reason for the verizon server to crash, which I cannot find the location of the thread elsewhere, but it is due to Google+ and one of verizons apps not being compatible with each other and eventually causing verizons app to crash. The only way so far to fix it is either downgrade google+ to stock, or disable the VerizonAvsService to stop the crash at boot.

I have disabled a bunch of bloat without root and it has not changed to modified.

I have verified for myself, that my Verizon LG G3 says "Modified" as well, yet it's a fact that I have never rooted or modified any of my system settings... I'm running Stock 6.0 Marshmallow... Go figure... Who knows with Verizon...
