How to make my O2 dead - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 ROM Development

Hi all,
I would like to make my O2 dead and then return to repair center. Any one can help.....

drop it from a large building

Thanks for your great idea.. but if you have dropped it from high builing, service center still help u to repair your phone foc, please let me know,,, i shall follow u...

High Voltage applied to the the conectors on the botton should do it.
or
run over it in a car a few times should do it, get a large battery and short some of the chips on it,
Why are you doing this?

Wanting a second set of accessories are we
You could try pulling the plug half way through the ROM upgrade, I would guess this whould be quite effective on making a dead 02. The one benfit is that it's less damaging and I think the insurance would still pay out - blame a power cut, blown fuse or somthing like that.

I want send back to O2 repair center,,, so that they will help me to upgrade my rom..

microwave it for a minute !!!!

lol
do a Radio upgrade & disconnect the device from the cradle in the middle of the upgrade! this works 100%

from my experience, i had mine replaced 7 times, and always no extra accessories included. (seveth a charm tho)

If you just want them to do the upgrade - why don't you just take the plunge and give it a try. If it works you'll have surpised yourself and you won't have to be without your device for a couple of days.
If it fails then the you'll have to send it back and you've not lost anything.
Give it a go! Go on!

You can do it
I have just changed my rom 3 times tonight and it is so easy, I might take it a bit far but I am addicted to change I also changed the rom yesterday as well. I fully recommend giving it a go. It is real easy. I see it as the phone likes it and wants me to upgrade it, so I am just doing good.
Look I am not a freak, I am just trying to make the point like others have before me that it is easy and we will help you...........
We believe in YOU.

Freak!

Where I can down some rom to upgrade my machine?
Should I use the ASIA ROM?

Go to the main page (http://forum.xda-developers.com/front_page.php) and in the centre you will see "XDA II UK updates now available". there is a download link there or you can register on the O2 site and download the rom from there. If you live in UK get that rom, if you live in Australia/ Asia get the Asia rom.
Cheers

Duxz, no worries. Most of the software were writen prior to SE, so it's just a warning. Of course some of the software doesn't run well on SE. I have a friend on the IIs and it doesn't run Battery Pro 1.1 well (makes his IIs unstable). For me it works fine ... no prob (still keeping my fingers crossed).
hey alvin, guess wat.... i think i screwed my whole xda up big time this time round...lol. Sending it over to the service center in sunway in da morning for them to load it up with the original rom... but will try to install the wm2003se again once i get it back...
i think the service center is gonna see me pretty often.... muahahahaha.
ok malaysian xda2 users..... i just got my unit back from the service center in sunway, PJ. Things are ok now... back to the stock rom. Those guys there are pretty professional in wat they are doing... and bad statements said about o2 centers are not tat true after all.
For those who wanna fool around with the roms till it get screwed, have fun with it coz it only cost RM35 to get it back running again

Hi Duxz, I'm not sure how you could screw your XDAII dead, because there was 1 time my XDA II got disconected in the middle of an upgrade, but I managed to salvage it using the procedure highlighted in this tread ... my advise .. save the RM35.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=13651
I just upgraded my O2 XDA II to WM2003 SE using XdA2JoJo.v3.2zS.exe. Also changed the AutoConfig and add in the thing for Maxis. So far so good.
I give up with the WM2003 SE. Just revert back to the original one. Basically the XdA2JoJo.v3.2zS.exe just a bit too slow...
duxz, i'm having the same experience as you are. bring my xdaii to SC at Berjaya Times Square to flash the rom with ori OS. what an experience huh. i feel very cold that time, so as my xdaii. now my xda back to normal and i dont want to try that anymore, since i dont hv fren using the same device. now i couldnt get my cradle to work as usual. at first, no problem. can do sync and charge with cradle, but now, only charging, cannot sync. my windows cannot recognise the cradle anymore. try to update driver but fail. now i sync with IR. i want to use my xdaii as usb modem now but must get the cradle to work first. found forum on modifying the pin, and still afraid on doing any mod. is it because of the pin on my cradle is shorted or is it because my usb is not 2.0?
HAHA, I reflash it back by myself. But then, now I got use to flashing the OS, I'm testing the various WM2003 SE now...
hi everyone, i suggest to whoever who wants to play around with their device, read the post carefully. because what ever you are trying to do, i'm confident someone out there has already done it.
i flashed my device recently.. thank god its ok.
cheers
can you tell us how did you do that reflashing? others (at other forum) need 2 devices, put on cradle the ok one till update program asking to start the update process, then swap with dead one. yet to find friend with xdaii at the moment
maybe you could borrow eric's xda. ehehe
I downloaded this from O2 official website sometime ago. This will flash your O2 back to the O2 Official OS.
I'm now using WM2003 SE with XdA2JoJo.v3.2zS.exe. So far so good, except that I have some issue with the Bluetooth Handfree.
guys i would like to know after the upgrade of ur xda2 to windows SE can it detect spectec sd wifi????

Corrupt Bootloader :-( Dead Qtek2020... Need Urgent help...

I was updating my bootloader using the pnewbootloader.exe app found on the xda developers FTP this morning and something weird happened.
When the app was done it wrote 000000x000000 at the end and that was it. After updating my bootloader I restarted my phone, but it wouldn't start. It just froze at a black screen. Nothing.... I doubt if it's even on. Tried charging it and then turning it on but no responce. Even the Led is dead. I tried all sorts of methods to bring back to life but all has failed. It won't even charge for god's sake. I noticed that when i remove the battery and charge it without the battery, the led would turn red. Otherwise the device is completely unresponsive.
I desperatly need help hear you guys. This is a call for all the Pocket PC geniuses out there. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you have only two options..
GO TO THE NEAREST SERVICE CENTER and let them fix it for you
or
Do this (the instruction is for wallaby)
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=WallabyJTAG
if you get the result : 000000000:00000000 .. you upgrade your device correctly.. but why it kills your device .. i really dont know ..
the correct bootloader for HIMALAYA are boot_1.03.nb0,boot_1.01.nb0 and bootloader_1.06.nb0 ..the other bootloader in FTP the 515.nb0, 517.nb0 is for WALLABY .. bootloader_for_wm5.0 is not a bootloader but an IPL thats why i added in the name and warned not to use it.
anyway i already gives my warning about Downgrading/Upgrading a bootloader
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=124909#124909
and was about to post HOW to do it .. but i change my mind since i also kill my Device due to some research and experimenting using an older than 1.01 bootloader

where can I find a service center here in manila?
tnx a lot
Thanks for your tip but ......
Well from what it seems I must have fried my device.... Now my question would be, how the hell are they gonna fix it ? And how much will it cost ?
If it's a matter of flashing a new bootloader then it shouldn't cost too much, but if they plan to replace a rom chip then I would suspect high repair charges.
If any body has any idea how much it might cost to have this problem fixed please don't hesitate to mention it cause it will surely make a difference.
If it's gonna cost me alot then I would rather buy a used xdaII and use it as spare parts for my original xdaII. Probably change the whole PCB and have it replaced with the used xdaII's PCB

if it is under warranty .. just dont tell them about flashing your bootloader .. they will fix it with no cost .. but if already out-of-warranty .. then i dont know how much really it cost for them to repair it ..
but there is always one fact in service center .. no matter how big or small they will do to your device .. it will take long before you can get your device back ..

I got one question here .....
First of all allow me to extend my thanks to Toenailed for his help on this. Now for my question. I don't get ..... How come, after all the software and hardware knowledge we've got here in this forum, we still can't fix corrupted bootloaders ? Can it be true that service centers have special hardware equipment designed to flash corrupted bootloaders ?
I live in U.A.E, Dubai .... and to be honest, I'm pretty sure that the service center is gonna tell me that the PCB needs complete replacement. Our service centers prefer to replace rather than to fix. I bet if I tell them about the bootloader issue they won't have a clue and insist on replacing the main PCB.
I seriously don't know what to do. I'M STUCK !!!!
is there a way that bootloader can be done without the need of the service centers?can you teach us?
Ok you guys this is ****'n serious **** ....
I sent my phone to the service center this afternoon, and guess what .... they couldn't understand what happened and have sugested to have the PCB changed. Changing a PCB would cost 1,400.00 DHS This is sooooooooooo ****'n expensive. A used pocket pc would cost 1200.00 DHS. I got so pissed off at this. Our service centers prefer to replace than to repair.
Now, it's been 18 hours without my pda and it's been a living hell so far. I'm so ****'n desperate right now that I could actually kiss the guy that comes up with a solution.
This is a call to all pocket pc experts including ( Buzz Lightyear, Toenailed, and Mamaich ) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE you guys ... This is really heart breaking. I'm currently trying some reviving methods but so far I haven't been lucky with anything. I really hope you come up with a solution u guys !!!
There's only one way to fix the Bootloader is by using the Jtag method to the PCB which is not described or anyone went into this experimentation especially on the HIMALAYA's Board or later ones..
I'm sorry to disappoint you my friend but pray if Toenaild will go further more and study it  and making it easy to happen...
I'm really stuck here .....`
Buzz Lightyear & ToeNailed
For God's sake please come up with a simplified version of the steps needed to repair a corrupted bootloader. I'm sooooooooooooo ****'n desperate now. Our local market doesn't even have spare parts or pcbs.

It seems to be a risk that you have to be willing to take. If you do upgrade though make sure that you are aware of the bugs that each ROM has some have a few and others have more, it takes reading 1000+posts to know. Your employer will know if it is a new ROM, before you hand it back in you would have to downgrade to the original ROM that came with the phone. As for the outlook account, you need the settings if it is setup for push mail, this could cause some headaches setting up.
Use extreme caution as this belongs to your employer, but in the end up to you.
Knowing my luck I think I would probably run into trouble
I will give flashing a miss for the time being - Thanks very much for quick response
Now, let me think. Lets use a little bit of common sense here shall we?
If you were given a laptop from work, would you remove the Windows installation that it came with and install Linux?
If you had a company van, would you remove the company logos from the side and advertise your brothers window cleaning firm instead?
If you were given a company uniform, would you remove the logo from the jacket and wear a Greenpeace badge instead?
Just think about it a little first, before posting such ridiclous questions to this forum!

I Miss My Shift

Sold my shift and bought the Flybook because the Flybook actually has voice.
I used the voice feature the first week I owned it and never again. Going to put the Flybook back up on eBay and buy another Shift. This will be the second time I sold a shift-bought Something else and came back. . . Before I do this, there isnt some new version of Shift getting ready to com out, is there?

I kind of remember seeing this last year I think. I would like to see a Shift II though. It was not lacking much for my needs .. as I said, I thought the phone would be a plus, but it wasn't. I think it is because I hate talking on the phone and a GIANT ONE was just that much more annoying.
I have another Shift on the way to me .. it will be here on Tuesday. I am wondering if there has been any changes to Snap Vue .. other than the original unlocking to full WinMo ..
Anyone ???

Well the phone is also working now, look in the Upgrade section.
And there is rumors about some Chinese people having SD and BT working under WM, but nothing is confirmed yet.
I get OH SO NERVOUS when it comes to doing any upgrades and it seems that when I looked it there last, there was more than one upgrade on the 'menu.' My Shift will be here tomorrow .. gives me some time lay out my coffee and valium and read about where to go next .. Is it a difficult upgrade? All in one, Full winmo & phone ?? As I said, last time I thought about upgrading there were a few and I didn't know which one to use ..

thanks much ... I remember with my first shift [this will be number 3] Modaco didn't have the easy 'liberate.' I printed out all the 'recipe' and followed step by step, using a highlighter as I completed each one. I was afraid that I would brick my computer. With the 2nd shift there was Modaco .. you would think I would be less nervous -- easier and I had already seen how fast people in this forum are to jump in and help if things go bad .. but I was even more uneasy with number 2 than number 1 .. So tomorrow when the new one gets here, I will be a wreck .. Just listen closely .. when you hear 'cluck cluck cluck' in the distance ..that will be me .. the Liberate / Upgrade Chicken
My Shift, number 3, arrived late this afternoon.. Couldn't wait to get home and get liberated !! So far so good !! Then I installed IE and Office and the phone pad .. The pad doesn't com up when I click it .. should it? Or do I need to install something else? This is where I am totally LOST. To install the phone capability, what do I need to do ?? And should I have waited to liberate until after the phone and gps are installed ?? I was looking at the links below and I am totally clueless .. Is there a dummy version of 'what to do next?'
When I click 'settings' on the desktop of winmo .. the only thing in that folder is soft reset and USB tool .. shouldn't there be other things ??
Never mind .. Fixed it ..

Once you liberated,
1. HardSPL it.
2. Update Radio only from this thread. Remember not to use ROM part. There is nothing wrong with this ROM, reason is thaihugo cooked two more ROMs and they make much more sense in my opinion. Pick up one and flash of the three ROMs from the following.
3. Choose either thaihugo's (one of the two ROMs light and heavy) or iOO's ROM. Thaihugo's light one is plain vanilla without office, and SnapVUE but comes with rest of the default software such as phonepad, IE, Network Widget, GPS Blue, task manager etc. Heavy one comes with PointUI2. Light one has more free storage and program area, where heavy one will have lesser than 10 MB of storage and program areas. iOO's ROM comes with SnapVUE interface and Phonepad, IE, Network Widget, GPS Router, soft reset, regedit etc. This has more or less 20 MB of Storage Area and 10 to 12 of Program Area.
Finally don't give up on this shift, because we are this close to SD, BT and may be WiFi.
if you need more help, just PM me and I can help you.

Yes, that is correct if your new Shift is an X9500. If it is a 9501, you already have the gps capability. I had flashed the first rom and radio when it came out and the flashed the iOO rom after that. I have not tried Thaihugo's roms yet as I am now waiting on the bt/sd to be fixed.....which it seems, may be done soon (hopefully)

Getting a new HTC Hero on orange contract

hi guys,
i've just ordered a htc hero on orange and i have 7 days to try it. I will receive it on tuesday, so whilst i'm waiting i have many questions that i would like help with. My computer knowledge is good, but with mobiles i'm almost useless, so apologies if i end up asking questions which may sound pretty straightforward to many of you.
1. The hero will come with orange firmware, but i assume its a lot slower than custom firmwares, so what is the latest and the best known firmware at the moment and what is the procedure on installing it?
2. Since I have 7 days to test out the phone, i want to try it with the latest firmware, but i'm nervous and i want to play it safe and need to protect the original orange firmware, so what is involved in making a FULL BACKUP of the orange firmware and if i decide i want to put the orange firmware back onto the htc, how do i do this?
3. Is there any risk involved in the above procedures where i could mess up the phone and not be able to fix it again?
4. Lastly, if I replaced the phone with the current latest firmware and at a later date Android 2.0 came out, will i be able to upgrade to the latest operating system without problems?
Many thanks again

1) why would you assume this? Orange dont put anything on there that slows the phone down, only an app for extra orange settings, which i believe takes you to a webpage...
2) read up on this, we cannot type it out every time. look for nandroid. But if you are trying it use the official update method from the orange site.,
3) same question, if you follow instructions you will be fine.,
4) It has been said by HTC that 2.0 will come to the Hero.... again this is plastered all over the forums and I do believe that your a lazy ass for not looking this up yourself.
Barry - it seems that rather than helping your simply having a go at me for asking questions. It might be a straight forward procedure for you, but I clearly stated that i'm a noob when it comes to the understanding of mobile phones. If you don't want to help then simply ignore my thread, rather than throwing insulting comments mate.
1. As for telling me that orange doesn't slowdown the phone, well many forum users tell a different story as they said there is a huge difference in speed between modaco firmware and orange's own version.
2. Nandroid is one of many and people have also mentioned sprite and mybackup which confuses us noobs as to which one is best and simplest one to use.
3. The 3rd question is not the same as no.2 because i'm trying to ask if there is any risk of totally bricking the phone, which might not affect you, but it means that i end up stuck on a 24mth contract with a bricked handset.
4. It seems your simply increasing your post count as you didn't read my question properly....I never asked if HTC 2.0 will come to hero....i asked that if i update to a custom firmware now, will i still be okay in updating to android 2.0 or could i run into problems because i have a different firmware.
Hi Mate,
There's a lot of useful info around these forums though i hate the 'High and mighty' approach a lot of people have around here, i dont know if they get a kick out of it or just generally like being unhelpful and worship the search god.
From my experience the search on this site is almost completely useless as you have to know exactly what it is you're searching for in the first place - and the point is that Noobs dont know what their looking for!
As for help with your questions i'll try my best! I have the Hero on Orange also - just had it for over a month.
1. The Orange Firmware doesn't have the bloat you'd expect - it's pretty much the same as the official HTC firmware bar the Orange boot logo. The reason Modaco is so fast is that it has tweaks and such to make it faster.
2. It's possible to do this - however you'll need to install a Custom Boot Image. I made a quick guide for someone else here :- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4868874#post4868874
The custom image will allow you to do a Nandroid backup of the currently installed ROM and it can also be restored - however the Orange Rom can also be downloaded from the orange website too and installed if needed using the RUU that coms with it.
3. There's always a risk when flashing firmwares and such. If the instructions are followed then generally you should be ok but theres always the small chance of something unexpected happening.
4. If i understand the question correctly - then yes you are able to install the latest official firmware when it's released. Though i hear that the latest official firmwares have been harder to 'Root' - maybe someone else could clarify.
Anyway i hope these answer your questions - and i'm 99% sure you'll be sticking with the Hero - from my first Month with it, i find it's the best phone i've ever had. Yes i've even owned 'one of them iThingys'.
Just for info I'm running Amon Ra's recover Image 1.2.3, the Modaco 2.8 rom with the Teknologist 1.8 kernel.
Cheers
Paul
thank u so much paul. Mate thats all i was asking for and thank goodness someone like u is here to help us noobs on the forum..ur an asset to this forum..keep up the good work.
I've just received the hero around 5 mins ago and i'm gonna play about with it to see if there even is the need to update the rom and will let u know how i get on.
I'm worried of scratching my touch screen, so my question is that can i get hold of a cover or something that can protect it?
Cheers mate...much appreciate it
No worries mate - glad to help people, shame most people round here find it such a chore.
I've been using my Hero for just over a month and havn't protected it with anything. I always take care to slip it into an empty pocket.
From what others are saying the screen is made of gass and quite resistant to scratches - obviously scraping car keys down it isn't the best idea but i'm sure itll be ok if you take a bit of care with it.
I also hear the response of the screen is lowered if a protector is added. Take a look on the Hero Accessories forum, there may be a thread on there about covers / cases and such.
Cheers
Paul
my problem is that i have 2 mobiles in one pocket and that sometimes means i end up putting my house keys in the same pocket too. The reason i have to have a phone in my trouser pocket is because i'm deaf in both ears and unless the phone is ultra loud, i can't hear it, so the only alert is when the phone vibrates in my pocket.
People recommend either the flexishield or the invisibleshield, don't know wot to go for, lol.
Also the htc unlock button should only be the one on the most right, yet if i press home button, that too unlocks it..is there any way of disabling this or altering the button combination?
To be fair, most trousers / jeans have 4 pockets. If you want to scratch all of your stuff, put both phones and your keys in one pocket. If you want to keep them nice, use some of your 3 spare pockets. At the end of the day, it's a £400 phone - treat it as such and it will reward you by staying nice and shiny.
true, but its not just keys that can do the damage mate...i'm a cable installer and my work involves crouching, bending, lying down and the worry is that the trousers stretch and crack or damage the screen, so some case or screen protector would be nice to have.
Some people say that the touch sense doesn't respond well, but i tried to use the touch with its original screen protecter sticker which comes with it when orange sends it and it works fine.

Well it sounds like you'd need a case to keep it protected in your situations. I'm sure there's loads of options available. Either that or just leave it out of harms way
How are you finding the Hero now you've had it for a few days now?
@newbiephone Belt mounted case is what is needed.
hi paul mate,
i think the screen protection is the last of my worries
i have the following issues which i don't know how to address:-
1. Low reception - after reading up, i switched off 3g and this increased the reception, but only slightly.
2. contacts / people list - I have exported 350+ contacts from nokia e75 into a CSV file. Then i imported it into google mail and now i synced the HTC with google and this allowed me to download the contacts list. However the contact's numbers are all classed as additional "notes" rather than numbers. I hope i don't have to manually type in 350 contacts!
3. Is there a more simple dialpad that you can recommend? I hate the htc one.
Hi Newbiefone
Can I just say something here that will satisfy all your worries!!!
You wont be wanting to return the Hero after 7 days because it is a quality phone....
Before long you`ll be installing roms, themes, apps galore.
Plus we`ve all got Android 2.0 to look forward to too....
lol, thanks for the positive comments mate, but these are not worries mate, but problems that need diagnosing and solving. I'm sure one these are solved, my htc will stay with me hopefully forever! ROFLOL!
Oops sorry newbie my post was in relation to your first post!
Only just seen your last post..
I sync my contacts with outlook. Can you not import them into there with your csv files and then sync your hero with outlook?
I have seen may posts about problems with contacts and syncing.
To be honest ive not had one problem with it the way i do it..
If you have any more questions just give us a shout. Had my hero since the day it was launched on Orange.
Ah Newbie just been thinking there is a dialpad out there that ive seen. Just cant think of the name lol...
Christ maybe i should think before i type!
A question for one of your questions. Have you tried the latest radio firmware?
Mine and my girlfriends Hero signal are both poor but we do live an airaid shelter!!
Johnny boy your a STAR!!! If you were a girl, i'd kiss u, lol!!
I exported from nokia pc suite straight to outlook and then used HTC SYNC Manager to synchronise calender and contact its done it perfectly!! Thank u so much!
Right what do u mean by the radio firmware? I currently have the latest orange firmware and was adviced not to mess around with that firmware by someone on the forums as i'm still in my 7 days exchange warranty with orange.
Now how about that dialpad name?
LOL oh i`m glad it worked. I dont know why people have so many problems sorting out their contacts on here. Ive seen many a story about syncing problems. I just think this way is so easy i dont know why everyone doesnt do it this way. Ah well never mind at least ive helped someone.
Mmm best leave radio firmware then till you decide to keep it.
Dial pad now thats a tricky one i had a quick look and couldnt find it.
I`m happy with the stock one so i didnt pay much attention to it. Maybe i should have lol!

the reason many people have problems mate is because many import/export the more difficult way via CSV, then google then HTC and if the CSV is messed, then it won't work, but outlook seems to import data perfectly.
If you can't help with a dialpad program, how about like a contacts grid? The Favourites one takes up too much space and only can add a verticle list...if i'm gonna use the whole screen, then i might as well have at least 9 contacts or more at the same time, rather than 3 at a time.
